High five to your mechanical skill. I love VW Vanagons. I have an '87 GL. I've kept lots of money in my pocket by learning to do all repairs and maintenance. As you noted, there is a large community that supports these versatile vehicles. I have found that most parts are affordable and still available. My most recent repair job was replacing both the master and slave clutch cylinders. Easy job.

I have 85 Westy that was well taken care of. And it still has many projects albiet not at your level. These vans should having a warning label Do not buy unless you are aware you will be spending as much time fixing it as camplng in it. Not to mention countless hours reading about how to repair stuff on the Samba website. Awesome video, love our patient attitude

Very true! These vans are definitely a piece of work regardless of doing it yourself or taking it to a shop. But there’s a reason they’re so popular too.
      Thanks for the kind words.

Great video! That is not an easy task when being performed in a driveway. Looking forward for more Vanagon videos!

Nice video, gotta tear into my auto trans also, when we first got it running it would not shift into 3rd. Did the research and found the 2nd gear break band piston seals were shot. Easy to replace and all worked well for about 1000 miles. It has now started to slip again and we have pieces of clutch packs in the filter. Been looking for a video on removing the final drive and transmission and this one helped. If you have any tips on the actual removal of the final drive/transmission i would welcome them! Thanks!

Good luck with it all! Definitely keep the torque converter in until it’s out of the van, and when putting back in make sure it’s all the way in, so you don’t break the pump like I did

I may have installed mine the way you did, what where your symptoms from the trans? I get a weird knocking sound from near the torque converter once it warms up or idle gets low enough, I was thinking the crank might have too much end play on the new motor allowing something to rub bad. Doesn’t sound motor related..

Tighten your torque converter bolts through the access port. Mine wouldn’t go into gear

I let mine go with the van unfortunately, you may want to check thesamba.com if you haven’t already, I’m sure you’ll find one.

Its honestly a pain lol, I’d recommend finding a used one ready to go if yours is blown. But if you want to take it on you can do it in a weekend. Just take it slow and use a Bentley manual.

Im hoping to pull my auto trans and replace the torque converter seal and install the GoWesty trans cooler next week. Nervous to take on this project though as I've never pulled the trans. Any tips or tricks?? Great video thanks for making it.

Be reallll careful. Make sure the torque converter stays in when removing with a strap. And when re installing make sure the input shaft is in right or you’ll break the oil pump

@@revolvinggarage5425 Thanks man! How do I make sure the input shaft is in right? I have to take the torque converter off so I can replace the seal - if the shaft comes out, should I put it back in a turn it clockwise making sure it engages or something?

Yeah so when you take off the torque converter the shaft will be there and probably come out which is normal. I would take off the trans cooler on the back, and if you look thru the top bolt hole you will be able to see the oil pump and where the shaft splines line up. Just when installing look thru that hole and make sure it’s all good

@@revolvinggarage5425 Thanks man. I removed it yesterday and and TC and Spline. All looks good - just got to get the thing cleaned up so I can replace the TC seal, Dif and Trans back-to-back seals and im installing an external cooler from GoWesty. Thanks again my friend!

I’m exporting mine from the UK to the US at the moment. I have intermittent clicky noise coming from the trans.
I think it’s because the guy who I bought it from topped the transmission fluid too much before I took it away. I’m going to change the fluid and the gaskets before I drive it again. I really don’t want to break it.
