The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Finally an old video that isn't all blurry. Steppenwolf is the real deal!
I don't think they they were lip-syncing. It is a shame that the audio recording mix and encoding was so badly done.
@@miker252It looks like one of those shows where the singer sings along with the song. Both the live and recorded vocals are there. Sounds like crap.
Monster 👹 Was a Very Powerful Sound .🎸 Rock ME, Pusher 💊 !
@@onusgumboot5565 yeah, everything else was obviously straight off the record. Never noticed the "dueling vocal tracks" before!
@@daveguitarnowski4402 I never understood why they did that. There have been quite a few times I've seen it done this way. You would think it would have been easy, and make more sense to turn off the vocal mic, and just strait up mime the thing. At least the sound would be better.
John Kay: If ever a rock star deserved a biopic showing from childhood to pinnacle of success, it’d be him.
Agree. 💯 Percent
Jerry Edmonton was one of the greatest and most overlooked drummers in rock history RIP.
he could sing, too
Yep, but oh my! that guitarist rocked my f*^*(&^ world when I heard Screaming Night Hog. That and America shook me to the root hard.
Agreed!
A rock drummer with the "traditional" left hand. Rare.
Same for Goldy McJohn on keyboards. Check out his playing on the song, 'For Ladies Only.'
Of all bands slighted by the rock hall of fame this one should be in 10 times over.
Stepping wolf don't need Hall of Fame,Hall of Fame needs Stepping Wolf🎸
Sadly they are Stepped On Wolf.
Are you kidding me?!!!
Steppenwolf's deep cuts are my favorites. This song and "POWER PLAY" are awesome.
These lyrics hit hard from these legends. It's never too late.🔥
This song stopped is a major reason I'm still alive today.
I remember when this song came out. I was too young to appreciate the lyrics.
Stephenwolf first rock music love..I'm 66...and this song could easily come out today and be loved...not at all stuck in the time it was written..add in a contemporary light show..that's all
I remember I was 10 in 1970, would go play pool at my buddy’s house, on the top floor. In the summer, windows open. They lived in an old, old mansion. His brothers hifi was up there, and we always listened to Steppenwolf albums. I have always loved this song. I moved around a lot, my father being a career Navy man. Music always grounded me. Fortunately I was around great music. Found out my buddy was killed in a high speed car wreck in the mid nineties.
I am so sorry for your loss. The memories of him will live on just like the music we grew up with. Peace my friend.
One of my favorite songs about forgiveness. Very underrated in their catalog.
Well said!
Yes! And this is the edited version. The full lyrics make the song even more powerful- ''And the God of your childhood, you can't find- to save you from your bitterness.''
@@meetontheledge1380 - Sadly for John, it was easier to preach than follow through because he never forgave all the bandmates he is playing with in this performance.
@@shyman99 Nick is the only one he has never forgiven . I know that Goly played at the last Wolf fest that was held .
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 - Yeah, it was Nick I was primarily referring to. Very tough on fans like me who adore both men and wish things could be different. I'm still recovering from the brutal VH1 Behind The Music program 25 years ago where Nick was wanting to reconcile but John was not having it. Each time I hear this song I think of them.
I had the honor and thrill of interviewing the one and only John Kay on my Oldies show in 2020, a dream come true as a huge lifelong fan. He was very well spoken, articulate and humorous, fascinating, a moment I'll never forget!
Thank you again John Kay for the honor!
I will always be a Steppenwolf girl, no matter how old I get!
''Ride with Me, baby'' is a song that makes me remember quite a few young ladies back in the day. A motorcycle was made for encouraging them to hold on to me tight!
Kay was way ahead of the times with his song writing. Pay attention to the lyrics to Monster to see how they apply to the world we now live in.
Monster is our current government
John Kay and Steppenwolf are legends high on the mountain of rock ‘n’ roll. You’re exactly right
One of my favorite songs by steppenwolf, long live their music for it transcends through every generation
All their stuff, they were a f*qn TRIP! "Monster" could have been written last week! Those lyrics tell us almost exactly what's going on right now. I needed to hear this song right now too. It takes me back in a time machine AND tells me about TODAY at the same time. HeY daDDy-0, eVen a doLL'd buMM-tuCKER p0ps-uP To spiT the chuRLY for a RAiLLer aFTer geTTin' TubED!
They were wild!
~JSV
My favorite song.
@@jsv438 ''Monster'' is a prophecy set to (killer) hard rock. ''The police force is watching the people...''. ''Because the whole world's got to be just like us/Now we are fighting a war over there...and we can't pay the cost''. ''Corruption is strangling the land''. Every line was true then and is true now. We have learned NOTHING from the gov's crimes in Viet Nam. AND, the young people DON'T have this music to raise their consciousness.
I wish there was more footage of Jerry Edmonton playing drums. I could watch this great drummer all day.
God bless that drummer! Man those guys were tight. Canadian pride.
Even though this shortened version leaves out my favorite stanza- this is KILLING it. Monster Leslie sound on the organ! I saw them only once (and it was LATE in the game), but ''16 Greatest Hits'' can go toe to toe with ANY LP from the Age Of Rock. I've heard today's ''music'' is nowhere. I don't know, because raised on bands like Steppenwolf (I even read Hesse's novel of the same name, just to see if it held any clues), WHY would I listen to modern music? From Elvis to Nirvana, that's what still sends me.
This is one of the GREATEST songs of all time.
Completely agree.
Absolutely!
Most talk about magic carpet ride, born to be wild, the pusher, power play, and don't step on the grass, but this shows off steppenwolf's real talent and what they were really capable of....really too bad this didn't have a bigger push on the charts
Don't forget Rock Me ,Baby.
@@jamesbowen8960 "Rock me" was climbing the charts until guitarist Mike Monarch was seen blowing his nose on the American flag in the lobby of radio station WLS in Chicago; the big boss saw it and said "I don't know who those guys were but they're done", pulled their music of the air and many AM stations followed suit. The song hit #10 but some believe it was heading up towards #1, that move cost them a lot of money...
What a brilliant set on the Ed Sullivan Show. 'Born to be Wild', 'Magic Carpet Ride' and this song - magical!
One of my favorite bands when I was in my teens !
My favorite band (in competition with the Monkees, lol) when I was a pre-teen. I had a cool friend and tolerant parents.
The guitar, bass and drums in this performance sound so amazing... I love the brief emotional anti-solo solo that plays off of and blends with the organ!
Their drummer is fantastic, playing basically metal in the tradional grip is nuts. John Kay, legend. Their bassist is absolutely fried in this🤣 Steppenwolf is easily my favorite band from the 60's, Im 31 but pops was born in '49 so he raised me on this
Jerry Edmonton was a monster on the drums. His timing and fills were as strong anyone in his genre'. Too bad he couldn't have remained in the 'Wolf longer than he did. He was brilliant.
love him too, but just a banger, downbeat stuff, few rat a tat fills....
@@ronnietoots6797 Listen to "Move over" for some of his fills.
@@lesschoenberger3070 Phew!
@@ronnietoots6797 the cat had a deep pocket and great chops
All the initial players in Steppenwolf were great. Will have to say the bassist Nick St. Nicholas was a bit heavy on the makeup.
Thank you John Kay & Steppenwolf for all the Music. Its so true all the Lyrics
Greets from a true German fan from Dresden.
John Kay is a Born German and called Joachim Krauledat. The Bassist Nick St .Nicholas came also from Germany.
Great hippie music, their sound is so one of a kind not to be duplicated...
John Kay (not his birth name) has been married to one woman since 1966..... much respect Mr.
There is so much I love and respect about John. When you hear him tell of his early years growing up in Germany behind the Iron Curtain and having been born with poor eye sight then he and his mother escaping to the free world and immigrating to Canada. All that and he is IMO a rock music legend.
MY RESPECT HIM HAS TOO!!!
I built a guitar for him back in the 80’s and he was a super nice guy.
Steppenwolf / John Kay definitely great !
If that ain't Rock n Roll, I don't know what is.
Ed Sullivan had many great acts on his Big Show, and this is another. Unbelievably moving performance, song, and lyrics. Out of the hard rock genre too. Something worthwhile for everyone.
"really big shew".
❤❤❤ if you made it onto Ed Sullivan you made it big dude
That was a b8g deal on Sun nite.
Remember seeing Stones Beatles Steppenwolf Young Rascals.... list goes on
Steppenwolf is a great group and a great song.Back in may 1969, when I was two and a half years old 💙
Great Band!!!!
This song brings me to tears
A vastly overlooked song that hits home.
Saw this last night for the first time...oh my...I love it...I could watch that drummer forever!!!
THAT SONG HAS SUCH POWER AND IS IS IS SOOOOOOOO REAL!!!!!!!
An absolutely perfect time capsule of the late 60's vibe that nails it on all fronts....from the incredible "look", to the lyrics, and most importantly, the awesome music of the times!!!!
I'm so glad I got to see them in concert
Saw them in '74 in the hockey rink that was my team's home ice. Rush, at the time virtually unknown, opened for Steppenwolf. What a night! What a show!
Same here. Been a fan of theirs since 1970 and finally got to see them in Atlantic City in recent years. Of course John Kay was the only original member. They were awesome and John sounded as great as he did on their early recordings.
Saw them early 70. They were a great band to see live in concert. Remember Goldy McJohn (keyboards) came out wearing a brown leather friged jacket and friged pants. With the big hair and beard looked like a mountain man. Awesome concert. Over 52 years ago. Still remember it. Couple weeks later saw Jefferson Airplane same arena. Orlando Sports Stadium. Long time ago. Late 60s and 70s were the time to be young and enjoy plenty of bands and concerts. Concerts could pop up anywhere it seemed.
The most memorable? Drum roll lol Grand Funk Railroad. Saw them with the opening band Black Oak Arkansas. Still raises the hair on my neck.
I saw them at the Jacksonville colosseum in 1979 then again in a bar on Jacksonville Beach later in the year..
@@ksr9t Good music and good times Orlando was full of orange groves then now crime and traffic.
from my favourite Steppenwolf album... At Your Birthday Party... one of the most underrated albums of the 1960's.... a real crime that Steppenwolf is not in the R & R Hall of Fame.... what is wrong with those people!??
Same thing that's wrong with Rolling Stone Magazine and their pathetic 2023 list of the 250 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time.
Zero Integrity.
Steppenwolf dared to criticize the big city grind, hypocrisy in general, religious hypocrisy, da gubment in Washington, DC, the Pentagon, war, drug use, etc. And all it got was them blacklisted from ever getting in the establishment R&RHOF.
They don't even honor Paul Rogers. I have zero respect for their calculated swindle.
Should be in RR Hall of Fame.......
They're not?
Dolly Parton is.
Had to go out and make a "rock n roll" record after she was inducted.
If I had a history in Rock n Roll. I'd not want be in the crummy thing. It's a joke anyhow.
Rap isn't RnR either
Catching this a lil late.....but damn...they do rock!
Late 60's, rock band, that Ed Sullivan backdrop... What's not to like!??
Sounds like the tracks on my 8 track, John Kay and the Sparrows. So good!
A forgotten masterwork
One of the great groups.
I always loved this band. John ..K.. Awesome 😎
Your eyes are moist, you scream and shout
As though you were a man possessed
From deep inside comes rushing forth
All the anguish you suppressed
Upon your wall hangs your degree
Your parents craved so much for you
And though you're trained to make your mark
You still don't quite know what to do
It's never to late to start all over again
To love the people you caused the pain
And help them learn your name
Oh, no, not too late
It's never too late to start all over again
Well, it's much too late to start again
To try and find a little bliss
So on your woman and your child
You release your bitterness
You drift apart some more each day
You feel the guilt and loneliness
And the God of your childhood you can't find
To save you from your emptiness
It's never too late to start all over again
To love the people you caused the pain
And help them learn your name
Oh, no, not too late
It's never too late to start all over again
You say you've only got one life to live
And when you're dead you're gone
Your family comes to your grave
And with tears in their eyes
They tell you, you did something wrong
"You left us alone"
Tell me who's to say after all is done
And you're finally gone, you won't be back again
You can find a way to change today
You don't have to wait 'til then
It's never too late to start all over again
To love the people you caused the pain
And help them learn your name
Oh, no, not too late
It's never too late to start all over again
At Your Birthday Party album.
Thanks!
"so on woman, man and child, you release your bitterness" ?
@@mikev4621 ABUSE!
Right on! So often the third stanza gets left out. It is the most anguished of the lyrics, ''And the God of your childhood, you can't find- to save you from your bitterness''. The way I read it, that stanza changes the meaning of the song completely. The first time I heard the full version, I couldn't believe it. He explicitly says ''It's much too late to start again''.
@@meetontheledge1380 "...save you from your emptiness". The song takes the form of a duologue between a pessimist and an optimist
John kay just the king of cool none other
This band was the epitome of the 1960s ☮️
Happy belated Birthday🎂🎊🎉 John Kay my favorite songs are “Rock Me” and Born To Be Wild”😀👍🏿 FYI: Did u know that Steppenwolf used to be The Sparrows first song “Tomorrow Ship” from 1967😀🎼🎸
The Sparrow were great, and if they would've released some of their harder rock songs instead of the poppy trippy ones they may have made it big before Steppenwolf!
I LOVED Sparrow's ''Isn't It Strange''! Check it out- maximum Acid Rock!
The problem with the Sparrow was they had signed with CBS records and they wanted the bubble gum stuff , not The Pusher . Sparrow was more of a blues band .
Love the drummer. Almost like Mitch Mitchell
lol, that bad...? lol
Jerry Edmonton. Fine drummer he was. Tragically died in a car accident.
During the interview after the song Ed Sullivan asks him what his favorite group is , he said Jimi Hendrix , I so see a mitch Mitchell vibe
@@georgelewis2775 & Mitch wore those suede bucket 🪣 bucket 👒 hats on that 1st Jimi Hendrix Experience U.S. tour.

The good ol days when they edited out half the songs. But that was huge exposure. 50 million audience. An amazing audience size for a live tv broadcast.

Great band. My favorite of them all.
One of the all time greats.
AWESOME
My favorites...
After all of these years, I have never heard that song.
Everybody knows these guys for three songs.....born to be wild, magic carpet ride, and the pusher.......but it seems like that's where it stops, this is a hidden gem, along with desperation, and their cover of hoochie coochie man.....probably the best cover of a song I ever heard
"Don't step on the Grass Sam"
Classic pro grass song.
Could be why the Nixon administration had Steppenwolf on the FBI watch list.

Because the rock and roll Hall of Fame is bullshit it's all about money

Ed Sullivan show holy shit eh! Ed sure gave a lot of entertainers that first chance. I remember when the Beatles came on his show to be honest I don’t know what they sang. I just liked Ed Sullivan more at the time . “We have a really big show tonight “ and that was so good. Anyone ever remember topo gigo ? He was this little mouse who would have a impromptu conversation with Ed and it was hilarious. Any way if you want a good laugh UA-cam Ed Sullivan.
I can remember exactly what I was doing and where I was the first time the Beatles were on Ed. Sullivan. Also remember the Hullabaloo TV show that came on once a week. Dusty Springfield, Young Rascals, Hermans Hermits, Vanilla Fudge, Temptations, Four Tops, Paul Revere and Raiders....
Some awesome bands back in those days. Dick Clark's Bandstand was on every afternoon. Seems like it started at 4pm.
Groovy.
The best of the best...
They wrote some pretty heavy Songs lyrically especially monster/suicide/America
Wow this is the first time I have ever seen a live performance blended with the studio version- it creates an odd echo effect
It's strange--John Kay is singing live over the original studio track (you can even hear the original vocals in the background).
I bet they refused to lip sync… in any case it’s a nice, yet odd sound.
It is an edited version. The original recording has a very powerful, additional stanza. 16 Greatest Hits (even the CD version) uses an edit- that always bothered me after I heard the original LP version.
A vida de milhões de pessoas descrita em uma canção infelizmente,as vezes quando vamos tentar ser felizes pode ser tarde de mais!
I bet Ed Sullivan thought this was a very positive song for some long haired hippies. I was reading in Wikipedia that John Kay and his wife are still together. He had written "Magic Carpet Ride" for her!
Good one.
His birth name is Joachim Fritz Krauledat, born in Prussia. When the family moved to Canada the teachers couldn't pronounce his name so they used John K.
The bassist was also from Germany.
Vocals: Val Kilmer
Piano: Bob Ross
Drums: John Lennon
Bass: Jim Morrison with a Keith Richards-Bandana
But who is playing the guitar? 🤔
Ohhh Wonder!!!
Guitar: Ronnie Wood from Walmart
Keef, trying to get his bandana back from Jim!
He kind of looks like Robbie Robertson from The Band
John Kay has an amazing history from the moment of his birth. I liked their political songs best: Monster and Renegade. Strong lyrics.
Uma das melhores letras escritas nos anos 60
Such a excellent band, sure don,t play music like that anymore.

FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TIME..
I guess it's never too late to start all over again
Was Goldie McJohn, the keyboards master, a freak or what!? My age old question is; were his creations & contributions done on the weapon of mass music known as the Hammond B3 with a Wesley? Great song by the way, and so lyrically true!
Yep , a B-3 and Leslie setup . Although the earlier Sparrow stuff was done on a Leslie Spinet organ .
I could be wrong, but i think John Kay's wife was on the fold out album of thier greatest hit, looking hot!
