I have always been a very touchy person, because it's true it's a very deep form of communication. In my personal case: That's my way of knowing how somebody (male or female friend) is really doing, and giving non-verbal support/energy/love.
I love doing basically all of them, only three I haven't: couple foot rub, ears rub and the high five thing.
A lovely anecdote I have: Once an now Ex tried to argue with me about nothing. We hadn't seen each other all day until the late afternoon. As we went over to his house he still was trying to get into an arguement. Once we arrived, I sat on the Couch and said: Honey, come here please (between polite but firm). He shockedly surprised asked: What are you going to do to me? Me: Trust me, come here now. So he sat between my legs and I massaged his neck and shoulders, until he was melted butter in my hands, LOL. Then I asked him: Could you now please tell me what's bothering you? We haven't seen us, so it can't be me. He just turned the head like getting out of hypnosis gave me like a sleepy smile and said: It's impossible fighting with you. That was a beautiful compliment. Afterwards he told me what had bothered him, and we could go on enjoying our evening together. It turned into one of the most beautiful dates.

My bf suffered from insomnia for about 20 years. Sleepless nights or nightmares when he managed to fall asleep. Not long after we started dating I gave him a foot massage. He dozed off several times.
