  • Not all Select o Speeds are the same. The early 1959 models had some faults with them and Ford replaced them under warranty. Newer models were upgraded and were more durable and better but the damage was done and they had a bad reputation. I show how to tell the early models from the newer ones and what one of their issues was. Thanks For Watching

How does the end of the SOS cable that goes into the transmission to the PTO come out ? does it go into like a fitting?

To add to this information. The early SOS Direct drive clutch was a roller clutch. Later are hydraulic. Early only a a suction screen for transmission pump, later had an replaced filter and oil cooler. The speed selector on the Early SOS has red dangle lines on the speed sections that have no engine. braking

Does the pto on the select o speed have to be on to run the 3 point?

No the 3pt hydraulics run off a pump on the right side of the engine if the engine is running the pump is turning. The only ones like you describe are the old 9ns 8ns where the pto shaft runs through the pump inside the tractor and must be engaged to make the pump spin. They started the external pump on the 53 jubilee up

What problem are you having with the transmission?

Had a sector speed in a Ford 4000 bought in 1972 here in Australia.
I never had any real problem with it at all.
Serviced regularly it ran like a dream on the dairy farm cutting , raking bailing hay and sowing 100 acres of crop each, which some was cut for hay . year till 1994 6800 hours on it, it did a lot of work .
Swapped it out for a manual gearbox in 1994 because it was too expensive to rebuild and hard to get parts for .
    Underrated gearbox

What did you do with the SOS 'box that you took out ? Theres a lot of guys out there that would like to get hold of it

@daneenmurf1043 it seized up was cheaper to put a manual gearbox box on it than get it repaired, expecially in the middle of making hay .
I the mechanic who was going to repair swapped it for part payment on a rebuilt manual gearbox and manual bell housing.
I never really had any problems with the select o matic if you treated them right and got them serviced like I was told when I bought it new it would last.
It was just worn out I quess and wouldn't change gear correctly.

@@aussiesmoko The SOS box is so rare at this stage that classic tractorfans would happily pay whatever it took to have a working example. Just look at the kind of money big Countys can make.
      PS hello from Ireland :)

i have a ford 4000 that i bought a few years back and am having trouble with the select o spd . i have been told different years by several different ford people anywhere from 1959 to 1969. but i do think now that it is a 1963 unit
Watching your videos i believe my numbers match the info you have provided.
my unit has c3nn 7006 B on left side (not conn)? then cwc underneath also a T with a dot on each side of the t also have that round flat spot on cvr.
my model #41105 ser# 18171 with a diamond on each end of the number.
my question is it possible to contact you by phone at your convienence as i am having great difficulty finding knowledgeable people re working on this particular tractor. i have done a lot of mechanical work but not on tractors, i want to try and tackle the band adjustment but i want your thoughts on that before i do it because i might have a bigger issue than that! I also have found some small metal parts in the oil chamber that i believe might be a thrust bearing (cheap style bearing that held 6 or 8 sm bearings sandwiched between metal spot welded race)
any help would be appreciated i have watched several of your videos but i have a few questions before i tackle this project. if you can find the time call anytime or e mail (even though i am lousy at communicating by e mail thanks larry 651- 429-5664
i dont know where you are at but i am in minn and not a whole lot of these around here anymore or people old enough to know what the hell they are doing on this vintage tractor.
