There is that joke about Germans obeying rules.
A guy wanting to cross the Sahara with his car was missing. A rescue team finds him several days later, died of thirst, because for some reason there was a red traffic light in the middle of the desert and his German obedience to traffic rules prevented him from going any further.

As an American of German extraction, I'm all for everybody obeying the traffic rules at all appropriate times and places. But really, at three in the morning, when you're a pedestrian and you can see there's no cross-traffic for blocks, if not for miles, then it really doesn't make sense to wait for the light to change.
@@dead8514 Idk how yall even navigate that. Its kinda the same in big cities here like New York and La which is where he lives which is propably why he said he doesn't wait. But its nowhere near the level of indian traffic.
Germany is not the only stigler for traffic rules. Finland is very much the same, people here WILL wait for traffic lights even with no cars around.
However we've come up with a work around. In the early hours of the morning / night with very low traffic, some traffic lights are turned off.
This way there's no traffic lights to obey and people feel more free to cross.
You do it in latin america, you get killed.
I wait for traffic lights with no other motorist around too. United Statesian. Also autistic and funny how we tend to adhere to rules that are presented to us, in general.

The reason germans wait for green, even when there is no car, is that its an infringment. If a police officer catches you crossing a red light as pedestrian you get a fine of up to 10 € and if you have a driving license you can even get penalty points (if you accumulated enough your driving license will be taken away). Same applies to bycicles and everything else that takes part in the overall traffic.
