  • The Kenyan students in Finland showed determination and resilence by finishing their studies and they all gratuated.
The start of their studies was tough but the end fruits are sweet. The Finnish way of celebrating graduation is totally different compared to Kenyan way. We appreciate and value both cultures. Intergrating to a new culture requires open-mindness and readiness to learn new things. Congratulations to the class of Tredu 2024 Kenia.

That was a mixture of traditions from very different cultures.
Some could see it as a celebration of this fusion of cultures. For some it's a sign of departure and abandoning of tradition.
Both sides have a point, but what really matters is what comes out of this.
Immigrants aren't going to adopt new ways without changing them.
They come with too much cultural baggage to do that.
The same is true about Finnish institutions. They adapt, in some ways. But they don't become fully alien either.

I think it's a special study program for practical nursing by the Tredu vocational school with a company Max Global.
Tredu introduces itself on its website:
"We are Tampere Vocational College Tredu - the most popular secondary level college in the Pirkanmaa region.
With 13 campuses in the area, 1200 employees and operating under the City of Tampere, we are proud to be the second largest vocational college in Finland."

Does it help students to put more effort in learning a language, if you say learning it is difficult?
Perhaps, but then you give them a mental image, which can become too much and then you need to encourage them to meet the challenge without becoming desperate or accepting failure or too low standard.
    Objectively Finnish isn't especially difficult.
Knowing English or African languages doesn't help in the process. Perhaps the idea of easiness here is based on the commonality with those languages and something different is judged hard, though it's just different.

Learning any new language is not a joke, it requires inner drive and determination. We don't discourage students but we also tell them that, if others learnt it who not them.

If others learnt it why not them. They get encouraged when they hear non-natives specking the language.
It is not easy to work in health care department if you don't understand Finnish language at all.

Some people even enjoy learning languages. I wish I were one of them, they make it look almost easy.
But we all can do it, given enough time. But that's the problem, students don't have the luxury of unlimited time.
Necessity is a great teacher, but also a harsh one.

It seems that people learning a language need to be encouraged to use their broken language, and learn to find it positive that others try to help them by correcting mistakes.
Others around them also need to become used to hearing broken language and understand that it's a necessary step and part of the learning process. Their challenge is to learn to give feedback and corrections with positivity.
