  • Mara Cozzolino is a good friend and extremely accomplished Japanese woodblock printmaker. In this film we discuss her work and her project to commemorate trees lost to forest fires near her home in Italy. She describes how she used the burnt tree bark to make her own pigment and how she cut blocks to create a set of twenty prints, each a portrait of a particular tree. At the end of the film you can see the entire collection of prints that make up her Memento project.

Fantastic video to watch. What an amazing project. Marra's "kento" system is very similar to my own which was a big eye opener for me. I became a bit frustrated with putting kento on each block and devised something similar (not quite the same) as Mara and have been very happy with it. Have to behave though when doing my traditional workshops with master mokuhanga artists and go back to the traditional kento. Thanks both of you (and Ben) for a great "watch".
