He is right I just put the mantles on my 220J yesterday I had the same issues the mantle after first light they separate and turn nasty burnt black not the Coleman we all used to know GREAT video
Dad, you are so right about the current owners of Coleman riding the name into the ground. I have had Coleman lanterns back in the mid sixties and the silk lite mantles that were brighter, stronger and built like a tank. Coleman went from Thorium coated mantles to Yttrium and the bright white light went to dull yellow light. Today, you can`t hardly find parts for the older lanterns and stoves without a search warrant. When I run across any parts that are for my lanterns, stoves, and heater, I buy them and stock them up because there is coming a time very soon when these items will no longer be available or produced. Be safe and take care.
Coleman really is a success story and its sad to see the company now……. You are right about accumulating older parts now ….. thank you for watching and I really enjoyed your detailed and accurate coment.
Well that's nice... I bought 2 packs of them because they were cheap and I could have some spares. I guess I'll be lucky to get one good mantle out of a pack.
My favorite are the silk lite in the dark green package, havent got a bad one yet. If you have the older silk lite you might break the string. Don't throw it away! Just have a bread wrapper wire twist handy with plastic removed. Works better than the new mantles for sure! About to order some peerless. Silk lite supplies can't last forever...😢
Don't blame Coleman it looks like there's a wrinkle in mantle before you light it.... you got to get the mantle in good shape before you light it !!!... the hole happens right where the wrinkles at !!!
@@DadGoesCamping how many thousand have you got send them my way... when you put your socks on you get the wrinkles out before you put your foot in your shoe don't you
Peerless mantles will save you, Peerless 2C-HG replace the coleman 21s (250cp range), Peerless 24-A replace the coleman 99 (300-400cp range), and they are the thorium coated variety. brighter, whiter light.
I've found modern coleman mantles do not burn in the same as the old ones and they tend to burn in better with constant flame. I actually use a small butane torch to burn mine in. Start at the bottom and then get the flame all over the rest of the mantle as quickly and evenly as possible. Better still is to not use modern coleman mantles.
I bought some in the same pack I bought 2 packs of 4 and all were bad . They did the same thing yours did . I need a good substitute for the Coleman no 21 mantles because these just sucked .
Thought it was just me. Id have to fuss with the mantels every time I went camping. Im thinking "I never had to deal with this in years past, this is too aggravating" I even tried peerless brand, and they are garbage too. For the 1st time in about 3 decades worth of camping, I got all my lanterns, put them in a box, and will be using LED from now on. I dont even buy coleman products anymore. There are much better camping brands out there these days.
Once these time tested centenarian American companies change owners, there goes the quality. And now is the time we will need gas lighting and cooking. What are you going to do when the EMP knocks out the grid? Come on Coleman let’s get it together and get some quality string tie mantles going again. The quick clip mantels are junk and someone needs to a video on them as well. Prepare!!
Im doubtful any company will produce quality mantles due to limited demand so I will continue to grab the older mantles whenever possible.........I agree about once the original company owners are gone it's never the same.
I've been using Coleman lanterns for decades and I've never seen even the cheapest import mantles self destruct 2 for 2. While you could still get it lit and it would give off light, you'd lose efficiency. No question. Feel free to buy them if you want but I'll be spending my money elsewhere.

Thanks for watching…. I hope you can find some older silk lite mantles!

I wish you better luck with them than I had………
@@DadGoesCamping so far I've tried one and it worked out okay

Ive still got a few of these POS mantles in the red cardboard and you can have them ! I’ll continue to use Silk-Lite mantles

I bought several old mantles on Ebay.......Its really the only option currently.
Can someone recommend a good mantle to get? I dont even understand my mantles just ripped up when i lit them.
Coleman “silk lite” mantles can still be found on ebay. What lantern do you have ???

Get your money back. Wow I'd bitch about it to them
I’ve stopped using new Coleman mantles……….Older silk lites are readily available on eBay etc.
Exact thing happened to me. Pure garbage.
Im afraid we've seen the last of quality products..........our new "disposable" way of life is here to stay.
Peerless 2C-HG is much better.
I have used a few peerless mantles and ive never had a problem with them……
That wasn't a very good test you know they will still work with a hole in them you never even let it up to see so you need another test

They simply don't compare to the older mantles.......cheaply made
You're not supposed to use a mantle with a hole in it. It can damage the lantern.
mantles with holes will create a hot spot on your globe, given enough of a temperature difference, you will bust your globe.
@@silentseawolf I was unaware it could cause damage to the globe but it certainly seems logical. Thank you for your input 👍
