Watching this I realize how much I suck at sticking to 1 thing at a time... I go all over the place lol. But yeah this interview was really fun (better than watching me talk in videos by myself) and hopefully, it'll help people realize that everyone takes a different route to get to the same goal. Some people did lots of anki, but I wasn't really into it so I didn't do much (though I do think everyone should make use of the program) some focused on reading at first, some on listening at first but in the end everyone I've seen who has used immersion-based learning has been satisfied with their progress. Don't stress about all the little stuff all the time. As long as you immerse, you'll progress.
Thanks for sharing your MIA progress Chris! Before finding out about your Japanese immersion success, I was worried that I wasn't rigid enough for some of MIA's steps. Like when you mentioned stopping wearing your earphones all the time. Too much passive listening feels so stressful and distracting for me. Your story is an inspiration and a sense of relief for my view in Japanese immersion.
@@Netmamuh That kind of stuff stressed me out too but when I realized it was too excessive I felt that I had to share my thoughts because I know a lot of other people were really unsure about that aspect.
Hah, playing Ao,and Zero no Kiseki is up there on my list too. How was your understanding when you played through?
@@davidoneill8158 Like 70~80%. The games don't have much difficult vocabulary tbh (until a political event in Ao) and the voice acting makes it easier since you can look up words you don't know. I played sky 3rd, Zero, and Ao at around the 7~8month mark.

日本人です。マットさんの方法論の凄いところは、アウトプットが自然な日本語になるという点だと思います。僕は日韓のハーフで、韓国語もネイティブです。クリスさんの日本語は、韓国人の日本語学習者が喋っている日本語のように聞こえます。日本語と韓国語は、文法的にかなり近いので、ネイティブみたいに日本語を話せる人は韓国人に多いです。日本語が物凄く上手い欧米人も、文法や言葉の選び方に西洋言語っぽさがありますが、クリスさんは今の段階でもそういう感じがあまりしません。逆に言えば、オランダ語やドイツ語話者が喋る英語のような印象かもしれません。こういう状態になったら、後はやればやるだけネイティブに自然と近づいていく段階ですね。14:50からの話が特に大切だと思いました。感心しました！

the part about "knowing how things work, but not knowing how to do it" is such a crazzzzy stage. understanding some japanese pretty well, but not knowing how to spit it back out~.. a struggle, but a sign.. that youre hacking at the wall baby yeeee

@@tongansoulja7378 toko! im not fluent although i am able to occasionally wow the random japanese person i run into. i also talk to my japanese friends pretty often using the japanese that i know. im at a pretty comfortable place, i can easily get by but there is still so much that i dont know.
actually is my goal this year to "double" my japanese ability! havent been studying much, just watching a little anime here and there

Holy shit, I have been AJATTing for the past 16 months and can relate with Chris so much on literally everything. Now I can comprehend lots of things but output is still a struggle. But it is so awesome to see another AJATTer making to a high level of Japanese. I will keep going with my AJATT as well. If anyone is doing AJATT and is confused or feeling lost. Don't give up! It will really really pay off later. I felt lost countless times but because it was just fun to watch anime and read I couldn't stop either. So just AJATT and you will get good at Japanese.

@@mattvsjapan Oh hey Matt, never thought I would get a reply from Matt himself lol. But yeah I keep saying AJATT (because it just rolls off the tongue for me) but if I were to say it, what I did was pretty much MIA. Started with 0 Japanese, did RTK, Tae Kim, monolingual transition while immersing the whole way. I even didn't read for the first 8 months (except the Japanese dictionary) because I didn't want to fuck up my accent lol. I will reach the 17 months milestone in a few days and I will be going to Japan for the first time in September! Because of this Japan trip I broke the no output rule and started practicing talking (phone) with Japanese people online for the past 2 weeks. And I can relate to Chris so much on this. Like speech comes out but on the spur of the moment you make mistakes and instantly go shit why did I say that. But yes holy shit MIA WORKS, it WORKS. Whoever see this and wants to learn a language just do MIA. You will get good even if it doesn't seem to work or make any intuitive sense at the beginning, but you will get good if you do not quit and just keep immersing.

@@rahulrrun7730 Hey man. I basically just did whatever in Japanese. I worked full time but whatever free time I had I would watch anime, at least for the first few months it was nothing but anime. So maybe 6 hours a day on work days and 10+ hours on weekends. I would do my anki reviews first thing in the morning then just watch anime when I had the opportunity. I am personally into visual novels as well as normal novels so after about 8 months from when I started I started reading those as well.

My most favourite interview
Tbh this June I had a lot of personal stuff coming up in my life like an Aspergers diagnosis and other stuff and thus my priorities shifted and I fell behind on Japanese especially Anki. So hearing the whole 3 hours immersion everyday is all that is really needed and the rest is just a plus, it really gave me the motivation get back in the game more regularly!
OMG, I did nearly the same thing with RTK XD e.i. I went crazy and did 70 new cards a day for a month and I remember this one day I got 900+ reps looool
After resource gathering and much realization that MIA is basically how so many people (also me) acquired English, I start this journey to Korean. I feel confident because it's been done and proven.

I love this interview, thank you so much Chris for sharing! I’m so excited to hear your specific progress, especially because it sounds like you didn’t sentence mine much! I hate flashcards so right now I’m beating through them for the super high common words, and I might bear them to get through Heisig’s or equivalent for the characters. But afterwards I’d mostly like to keep learning through reading and watching which I’m doing right now. I’m studying chinese but my process has been pretty similar, I read a grammar guide early on but never drilled it I just looked through it for an overview. and I’m chugging my way through a webnovel I’m really into, and I did a bunk of SRS in the beginning for the 1000 most common words. I’m hoping I’ll be able to start Improving more just from immersion eventually. I think based on your results, maybe I do need to just get myself to chug through a remember the characters method... I’m thinking right now that’s the biggest thing just sort of blocking progress.
Such an inspiring video! I've been immersing and doing RTK1 + Lazy Kanji (just to reinforce my memory) for 2 months and I'm not sure if I should be mining sentences right now. I've gone through about 1000 kanji but I'm not sure if I should start mining i+1 sentences or just keep immersing

On another quick note, did you (Matt) and Yoga ever plan on doing that immersion capsule concept that was mentioned in yoga's video? I'm really interested in seeing you guys doing it. Maybe even do a romance language and compare the learning rate between yoga who already knows a similar language, and you who I'm assuming would start from zero.

I can relate to the deteriorating Spanish levels lol. I can talk to my mom or casual conversations but I randomly blank on words. I bought some books in Spanish to help me with vocab

Do suggest learning a 1000 words and then jump into immersion as a fully beginner?
It's really cool seeing this because I remember watching Chris' Kanji videos while I was in the middle of RTK myself and it really motivated me to keep at it (probably because I'm a little competitive and I started a few weeks before him). He's very much deserving of this interview, nice work Chis!

I’m definitely going to start meditating. I have ADD too, so I’m already at a disadvantage focus wise.
Culadasa claims that it won't be a problem once you reach stage 3-4. Until then you're gonna struggle more than the average meditator, but if you manage to push through it, you'll be fine.
I was uninterested in watching the interviews when going through your videos but I saw this one and something just told me to click it, and I'm glad I did.
Seeing the differences between Chris and I kind of gave me an insight on how I need to modify MIA for myself. The biggest difference I noticed was when he was talking about how he just couldn't with sentence mining/reading tae Kim. This resonated with me because I'm the complete opposite. I love grammar but I can't stand vocab, despite vocab being a very important part of every language (this is how I stubbled upon AJATT/MIA in the first place. I figured immersion would be a fun way to get vocab and just delete the boring factor). In all honesty, I've been dictionary dependent for a while because of this, but I've slowly began winging myself off of that.
Another thing I took into account was when he said he didn't really know much Japanese before starting AJATT. The thing with me is, I've been studying Japanese for almost 2 years and I'm around the N4 level (relatively, can communicate [via text] general things and talk my way around stuff [via text also], little to no speaking practice and listening is what it is. I only hear words I know if that makes sense)
Chris' situation, still being a noob when he started makes me think the conversion was easier for him because it was practically a clean slate to work with. In my case, my closest attribute to a clean slate is vocabulary, so, I'm having a hard time completely transitioning into just.. raw dogging that japanese. Maybe I'm thinking too hard about it? If anyone has any tips, then please. I've personally just jumped into monolingual everything.
Other than all that jazz, there were some really good tips in this and I'm definitely going to rewatch and take notes. Very informative and inspirational this was.
I'm currently at 280 kanji and it's been a week and a half I've studied Japanese 2 months before finding out about this method but the AJATT/MIA is by far the best method I've tried

Just wanted to comeback to this comment, it's been 2 years plus since I commented this. I feel really good about my Japanese I can understand so much and made tons of progress. I still immerse everyday and my focus is becoming a better speaker atm, but just wanted to comeback because this comment is nostalgic for me.

Damn, I really want to be in that situation he was in where I am super addicted to some light novel/manga/show and the rest of it is only in Japanese so I feel super interested in trying to read it in Japanese. When I was young I could get super into stuff more easily but now its hard for me to get interested in anything and lately when I do it usually ends up being Korean.
What should I do to improve my listening skills and understanding 80%or more and what should I listen to? Everything?

I think when it comes to reading without a dictionary, I'm not sure what kind of Japanese he's referring to but I come across plenty of English I don't know within books (my first language was Spanish but I learned English once I started kindergarten). It's not super often or anything when that happens but I think if you can read various Japanese books using enough of the context around words you don't know, then you're pretty close to fluent imo.
But maybe Chris runs into tons of words he doesn't know yet. Not sure.

Hey Matt or anyone else, does anyone have a suggestion for a note type for sentence mining mandarin chinese? I haven't been able to find someone who shares what they use on the discord but I've noticed that the Chinese Support note type messes up the pinyin on around 1/3 of the time especially on Anki 2.1. Matt, I know you were learning Chinese for a while. What did you use? Also, would you suggest making cards that are audio on the front and the expression and definition on the back or using characters on the back and reading and meaning on the back as it seems that most people do with Japanese?
Digital light novels!! Why did it take so long for to figure that out
Somehow I missed the video that was uploaded on Steve Kaufmann's channel a few months ago where he talks to you in Japanese about language learning. Unfortunately, there aren't that many videos of you speaking Japanese, so every time I see one I am literally blown away by how good you are! You are either super talented, or the input based learning actually works. I like to think it's the second one as that means I have a chance too. Lately I've been slacking off, but after hearing you speak I decided to make more effort. It's really inspiring to see what you've accomplished with your Japanese and I hope you keep uploading! ^^
As for the dude in this video - he's come REALLY far in only 18 months. I would not have the confidence to speak Japanese into the camera for an hour like he did. Keep up the good work, Chris!
Is better the traditional RTK or Lazy kanji in your opinion?
Woah, hearing Matt say that novels are harder than light novels really surprised me. I could have sworn he said that light novels were actually harder than regular novels in the past. Makes me feel good that I got through the first three chapters of アリス殺し before my brain got fried. It's actually about this guy that's a scientific researcher that has these dreams about Alice in wonderland where weird shit happens like the March Hare drinking Humpty Dumptys entrails because he mistakes it for soup. The first chapter is just Alice explaining things to Bill the lizard over and over again and I was actually understanding what was happening and I was like man this is a dumbass lizard I have to get this book.
This is the 3rd time I've heard a learner say they went from rtk1 straight to rtk3. Whats the reason for skipping rtk2?
So I have a kindle and while I do want to read manga (as it seems easier than light novels and all I've read is Yotsuba so far), I've noticed that you can't use the dictionary functions of the kindle since manga is just a bunch of pictures. Would anyone advise that I just go straight to something like Rising of the Shield Hero and suffer through it? The vocab is what I'm most worried about, and I'm not a fan of constantly going to jisho or my phone (japanese dict app) and typing in vocab.
There's really no way around all the vocab. I suggest looking at it in the way of "once I come across the word, it won't be new ever again"
I find that if I add too many anki cards while reading I'll get burnt out and not want to read, so just avoid adding too many cards.
Just look up words you don't know as you go along and you'll typically start noticing the same words over and over, which makes it easier.
So, for clarification to directly answer your question, yeah just suffer through it and you'll improve.
@@sutton-mia4954 Thanks. That's what I've been doing with yotsuba. I only have a chapter or two more, but I add cards to a list on a Japanese app on my phone if yomichan (and a frequency list I have built into yomichan) show it to be common. I haven't made an anki deck out of these yet, but from the kanji and just seeing them more than once, I've learned the words
Read something like 風が強く吹いてる or something similar with a bit more of a real world setting. I personally love the novel and dont find the vocabulary very overwhelming. But it depends on your experience level I guess

雪国 (川端康成) in the newer prints, is actually easier than 牛 written by 坂口安吾. 牛 is full of kanji and is using even obsolete hiragana/katakana like ゐ ヰ . But even if this is an old book from Aozora Bunko 青空文庫, this site is a treasure. In Romania is hard to find Japanese books (novels), on paper. Matt, I can't thank you enough for this.

I wanted to finish only RTK 1, but part of me wants to finish RTK 3 right after (I'm doing it the traditional way)
I'm currently at 1850 kanji, and thinking of doing another 1250 kinda scares me.

been there done that, I don't recommend doing RTK 3
I think its better to focus on vocab/grammar instead, and its a lot more fun and a lot more important than RTK3
Later after you already know enough to have a conversation you can think of doing RTK3 but I doubt you will need it, best thing would be to focus on Kanji that has use so if you are reading engineering books for example as you read you will find some kanji that are not on RTK1 but you learn them as you go, so there is no need for RTK3 even in that situation, even the Japanese don't know it and they only learn it when they need.
I think its not just a waste of time but I think its even bad to study RTK 3 because it gets in the way, the time you are using for it its time you could be getting even better with RTK1, and its time you could be learning more vocab, and because you won't see RTK3 outside of your anki deck, you most likely will end up forgetting it anyway...
So only study RTK3 when you are already more comfortable with Japanese and just wanna do it for fun or have some actual use for it.

Chris talking about how novels contain speech not used in real life, made me think that this is true for Japanese much more than other languages, because a lot of Japanese speech is standardized. By that I mean that Japanese has a lot of stereotypical patterns or expressions that are used in a variety of situations (even verbatim, a lot of the time), so that for most settings, there's a standard expression someone can use. Some of it is tied to cultural norms, but it does makes every day language and speech a bit inflexible, which is unlike literature, where settings might be wildly different, social norms might not apply, and 'waxing poetically' is warranted.

been living in Japan casually talking to friends and girls and playing Nintendo Switch in Japanese for 1.5 yrs and my conversational ability is pretty decent. I wanna do some work to level up my game but it's easier when you just do fun stuff. Have RTK sitting on my desk and haven't gotten too far. :s
