  • I do a lot of off the beaten path kind of stuff. Sometimes I'm miles and miles from civilization. This is the kit I carry when I'm in the field to make sure that even if I get separated from my main pack, I'm able to survive and be found. Now, I know this isn't radio related, but it definitely applies to anyone who's doing SOTA or POTA way out in the middle of nowhere....or anyone who likes to hike in areas that aren't exactly well traveled. The things I include in this kit are things that I feel are important to carry in the field, and are hard to make field expedient versions of. Understand that the more skills and knowledge you have, the less gear you need. As with anything else, having gear is only half the equation. You need to know how to use it as well. Don't wait until you're in a life or death situation to try to figure out how to use a torniquet, or a compass, or a ferrocerium rod. Practice your skills BEFORE you go into the field. A good place to start with your kit is Dave Canterbury's 10 C's. I'd also recommend taking classes from knowledgeable professionals if you really want to become proficient. Having a little gear and the right knowledge might just be the difference between a fun day in the woods, and a funeral. Thanks for watching and 73!

Hands free & quickly-accessible is underrated! I also add a monocular, mosquito repellent, chapstick,

Great way to start off your field activation series. Lots of sage advice in this one that is applicable to more than just radio activations. Thanks for sharing!

i picked up my tara/kit bag along time ago when they first came out, solid gear. it was the same color now its got a grey patina from hard use over the years. iv got a bunch of little kits in plastic bags for the front compartment, like signal kit with the usual + a mini road flare. fire kit and nav kit. i have a garmin 301 with strap removed attached to the right guy loop in the front zipper pocket, so you just unzip it a little and you can flop the gps right out of the pocket and up front. works great !!! back pocket i keep a tq and a blaster. the great thing about the kit bag is you can very easily toss the whole unit into a bigger pack. someday ill find a mtr3b and build a tiny qrp kit to put in it !!!

Very Informative Evan!!! I am missing a few items that you have in your kit so I will be adding those to mine. Only thing I can think you might consider to add is maybe mole skin for blisters and an extra pair of socks.

There's moleskin in the first aid kit, and I agree, that's definitely something you want. Socks go in my cold weather kit. For my summer kit, I'm generally not wearing socks to begin with, so it's a non issue. Thanks for watching!

I wouldn't bother with the flask. Instead, get a 12oz titanium mug that you can dummy cord to the bottom of the kit bag and let dangle. Boiling water 6oz at a time for purification sounds like a terrible time haha.

I want everything to fit in the kit bag. The chances of me needing to boil water are astronomically low. I just want the ability to do so

@@EvanK2EJT I figured that was the reason you picked a flat-ish liquid vessel like that. Makes sense.

@@benthephilosopher In my main pack I have multiple metal containers to boil water so this one is just a redundant "just in case" item lol
