My first attempts at hand filing were a disaster. So bad I bought an electric grinder. Years later, I started hand filing again, and what a difference. Knowing what the results should be makes all the difference. You file the spots that are rough, dull, not of the right shape, etc. Practice, practice, and before long you will be a pro. Don't worry about making a mistake, as it is part of the learning process. Worst thing that can happen is you have to buy a new chain, and that really doesn't happen, as you just re-file the mistakes away.
You’re an inspiration to all Sarah! Thanks for putting yourself out there like this. I love hand filing, it’s so relaxing and gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I feel the saw pull in the wood. Great Job👍🏻
Thank you! That's what I've been using too, I really like it. I think it's worth learning to hand file though, I have a much better understanding of my chain now 🙂
Great video Sarah! As you get more practice you will be able to tell by how it is cutting what needs attention. You can tell when the filing gets smoother the sharper it is. You might want to pick up a file card to clean the files after sharpening. They will work better and last longer!
Great video and channel! I’m still waiting for my Ms 261c to arrive. Right now all I have is the Msa 220c and learning to sharpen my chain with the Stihl 2 in 1.
Thank you! That's awesome, I still only borrow the 261. I found the 2 in 1 was really great to get started, it's easy to use and does a good job. Just remember to swap out the files when they don't seem to bite anymore. I wasted a lot of time sharpening with dead files 🙂
Hello again. I hope you're having a happy and safe Easter. It's been almost a year since you made this video. Have you been practicing ? I have 2 little hints or tricks for you. If you want close access the the chain then turn the chain around on the bar and you can file from the end of the bar and do both sides of the chain. Also, you can flip the saw over and 180 degrees to file the other side of the chain from the same side you're standing. Ultimately you have to be able to sharpen both sides from the rear with left and right dominant hands (in other words, change hands).

Thanks for the encouragement and for sharing your experience 🙂 I'll keep practicing!

Thank you so much!!🙂
Good Job- I’m using the Sthil 2:1 sharpener- never looked back.

Thank you, and thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can get one. Sounds like it would be worth it to keep the files going longer. 🙂
Well done, thx for sharing. From your nr 1 fan in Sweden 😊👍

Thanks! Just subbed and great channel!!!👍👍
Files only really cut on the push stroke. Also most chains recommend a slight downward angle on the file handle when filing the tooth.
Thanks! Did not know that, I'll remember for next time 🙂
You got this. ALL it takes is practice. See you on your next vidja and have a blessed day.
Thank you! You too!🙂

Your doing it well, 👍🏼🇱🇷
Thank you! 🙂
Not bad at all but i would like to see you using a brushcutter, your choice.Best of luck and greetings from Romania!
Thank you! Brushcutters look a bit scary to me , but if I get the chance I'd still try one 🙂
Files cut the material on the push stroke and blunt the file on the pull stroke. To you should only sharpen with pushing strokes.
Hi Sarah great job ur a star

Rule one for working with power tools: always tie your long hair back and out of the way of any spinning blade..
Good advice! I always tie it back, but it may be getting a bit too long to get away with just a ponytail for much longer.
You need to push the flat file, not drag it, if you want to go in the other direction that's ok but go from the other side.
Thank you! Did not know that and will definitely remember next time 🙂
