If we talk about colourism operating on a spectrum based on proximity to whiteness vs a simple binary (light skin or dark skin), then more ppl will understand that no one will experience colourism the exact same way, but we can acknowledge everyone’s individual experience for what it is on the spectrum. Proximity to whiteness isn’t just about looks, it’s access to white spaces, higher education, generational wealth, travel and so much more… I see many dark skin people who take advantage of their access to some of these privileges that historically have only been afforded to white people, to position themselves further up the colourism hierarchy and that is why you hear some dark skin ppl who benefit from some of those other privileges, actually distance themselves from the colourism conversation completely and even sometimes even deny that they’ve ever experienced it. They do this sometimes because they actually don’t believe they have experienced colourism because of their privileged circumstances and/or they’ve secured what they believe to be a privileged space in proximity to white communities and don’t want to rock the boat or offend their white peers by being vocal about their experience with colourism. They’ve been tokenized and they’re okay with it. It’s actually quite a nuanced layered topic and I appreciate you using your platform to go beyond the surface click bait conversations we’ve been having for the last few decades. ❤
Love this..its like to me its more about social status or whats obtained..if u don't want what that white or like man has! Where's the colorism...at least thats my opinion but im a lil-big yellow girl lol...green is the color i seek anyhow
I feel like this topic is so much yet important. I will say as a lighter skinned black woman with 3c/4A hair & almond shaped eyes I was picked on in school & by my own sister, calling me names like chinky , red skin “you act like a White girl” “You think your all that because your lightskin” , “you wouldn’t be pretty if you didn’t have all that hair”. I’m not dark skinned so I never grew up thinking or wen to the extent of saying it was colorism just bullying because I know colorism is systemic & set up for lighter skin people to be at a higher level BUT it sad when you fell like you can’t even be accepted or loved by your own community because of something you can’t help or choose.
I'm dark brown skinned but I have always hated it when ppl make it seem like I'm deep dark... I just feel like desirability politics always goes into this. If it wasn't for preferences no one would care about skin tones. I've never missed out on anything but a man because of my color.
I didn’t realize that people had “grades” of darkness/skin tone until I moved away from Louisiana. Growing up, you were either light, dark, or red. That’s it. On the east coast, someone told me that I wasn’t dark skinned, I was brown skinned. I was so confused and that moment made me realize how silly the entire concept is.
I never thought I experienced colorism. Im from Brooklyn and the school i went to i never heard people get made fun of for their skin tone. Every guy that I've dated was lightskin, my husband now is lightskin. But i realized that i only dated lightskin men because darkskin men never approached me. I was too shy to approach men. So even though nobody ever outright said i dont like you because of your skin, the fact that darkskin men didnt really approach me says alot. Also, the pretty for darkskin statement is colorist.
Colorism can often play out in the dating world and in some instances we may not even notice. Its those internal biases we have that subtly show in our actions and are embedded in our minds that play out in society that can be most dangerous. Thank you so much for watching the video and sharing your experience! 💜
I talk about this topic often. I’m like skinned. Colorism is a big issue. And I also wish we would bring into the conversation anti-blackness and internalized racism as a whole.
By definition. They don't. All cultures of color have colorism issues due to colonialism and euro beauty being "preferred". Even in India, its the dark skin ppl who are marginalized simply because they're dark. The face of India is light skin (what we see in media). They are preferred and BENEFIT from colorism.
I have 2 🙋🏾♂️questions: 1.)What's the difference between being attracted to a certain complexion & actually being colorist? 2.) Are you in someway being discriminatory if you don't find light / fare skinned women as pretty???
People tend to have their "preferences", but when it comes to skin tone based bias many do not acknowledge WHY they have that bias because they may have to actually come to terms that many of their views uphold negative stereotypes or they are rooted in colorism. If you choose to not date someone for whatever the reason is, then by definition yes it is discriminatory. Does it make you a colorist? It depends on your 'why'. You have your right to who you like. I'm not going to debate that. All Black is beautiful. 💜
@@BCentricTV I agree that all black is beautiful.....Maybe because I'm dark skin & 90% of the women that I've dated are either my complexion or darker it might be something inside that lighter skin black girls rejected me as a teenager. 🤷🏾♂️
@@DeeDaKaang1 BINGO! IMO and from my observations when I hear a Black man say "I don't like/date LS girls/women" or "I don't find them attractive" I don't feel its sincere. I am almost always certain he feels that way because 1. He was rejected by LS girls/women 2. He doesn't feel he would be "good enough" for one 3. He is LS and feels the need to "balance" things... Society has placed LS women at the top of the totem pole and many men are not going to outright say they feel inadequate or voice their insecurity about pursuing them if they have been deemed by society as unconventionally attractive at some point in their lives. It's easier to say "I don't like their attitudes" or "I like DS women better". I didn't want to initially say that to you because I don't know you and I can't tell your story. But, thank you for your honesty. 💜
To answer your first question, the difference is a person would never date a dark skin person regardless of how beautiful she/he is. He would rather date an "ugly" girl, solely because of her lighter complexion. That's colorist!
I want to love this..I feel u soo much but as a two brown skin parent light skin chick I was called a white girl some black girls hated me I had some amazing black friends thank God but again I was too dark for white ppl so like yall say colorism like yall the only ones that are discriminated against but I have light skin with full black features hate is hate and its all fucked up
Are you biracial?... What you experienced with wyt people was racism. I did not say or are DS people saying LS people cannot be discriminated against. Anyone can be discriminated against for anything, it is not synonymous with colorism or racism. I stated in the video that someone can very much not like you for how you look. I.e., Bullying, teasing. However, people of your complexion are typically favored in society and has received higher social status, lesser prison sentences, career advancements because of how you look. Historically and statically your light skin gives you a higher chance of better social and career opportunities. Your lighter skin is more palatable and you all are often seen as most desirable. All people can hold colorist views. DS people were teased, bullied, and not accepted in certain social circles. If we limit and define colorism to being teased we are doing a disservice and are not getting to the meat and potatoes of how it truly affects our community systemically and what we can do to dismantle the system. I will not negate anyone's experience because being bullied is not right, but unfortunately much of that was due to the colorism dark skinned people had to deal with in society. Colorism affects us all, but we do not all actually experience it. H8 is h8 and we can all experience that, but it is also okay to recognize that maybe some one may have it a little bit harder than you in some aspects. That doesn't make your experience invalid, it just makes it different. 💜
And I completely agree sis im definitely aware of the bias...but being labeled the house nigga is not a badge of honor what I think ds women especially don't under stand...ohh and I for got to answer your question im black full blown mama daddy everybody black but I came out light bright damn near white..was a white baby and was the only one in my family...it didn't get me more meals I am not favored by my parents ...like literally in my family who makes more money os the favorite and my sister who is one shade darker than you!! Same parents had the rich god parents...like its not as easy for the LS with African features to just be accepted and I think that's a commons misconception...I have big titties that's why guys liked me..but I have been cheated on by my preference dark skin men with dark skin women and I honestly never truly took it as its cuz she is chocolate..hell she might have bomb head I don't know but I feel like any time a ds women has any kind of back lash..the same that we do they like to blame skin and not attitude, certifications credential likelihoods that just maybe if that person just has a damn type...like I love chocolate men..but that doesn't mean every chocolate man loves me..and I feel that dark skin and brown skin women just automatically go to ooooohhh welll its cuz she yellow!!?? Maybe I have that guack guack swivel round pivot 3000 that she hasn't learned yet...I can't say but still everyone is throwing colorism around like its not the same as discrimination...how can u say your hurt by this discrimination and spew the same to the next BLACK woman just her black look different than yours?
