i’m 76 yrs young and i had to laugh because you said this is so sick, now i know that means that it means very nice, and i agree, great job young man👍 ,i just now started using the word awesome instead of far out. haha
Hey Kevin! Glad to see you had a laugh at my excitement, it’s been a long road with this build haha. I grew up in California and “sick” is the word we all liked to use when something is awesome. A little bonus phrase I grew up with to refer to something cool is “that’s tight”. Thanks for watching 🍻
GLAD I WATCHED THIS VIDEO! THE PILOT HOLE IS BRILLIANT! THAT CIELING TURNED OUT SICK!!! LOVE IT! MAY CHANGE MY MIND AND GO ALL THE WAY!! THANK YOU! THUMBS UP!!!
Next time, instead of drilling the 2 boards separately, clamp them together in the relation they would be installed and drill both at the same time. That way, you have no pilot bit issues and you know you have perfectly aligned circle segments.
Thank you for watching! Unfortunately life has been a bit all over the place this year and I have not had much time to work on the van. I have made progress and will make more videos about it in the future though, stay tuned!
Great work. I have a 04 GMC Savana hitop and being conscious of headroom put up 1/2” polyiso also have 1/4” cedar like yours but they are 8’ planks. Now thinking best way to attach cedar. They are extremely lightweight. The plan is to raise the 4 center planks off the ceiling about 1/2” with 3/4” gap between them (they span the same 16” width of fan located front center). The backsides will be painted reflective white with LED 5050 white RGB strips running the full length of planks. The light will shine on up to a white reflective surface creating a floating effect. Each side of the center is 15”, so 4 planks with 1/2” gap between. They will be mounted flush on to ceiling not raised like center planks hoping lighting will shine across the tops. A defused strip along the sides behind crown molding.for accent lighting could happen too.. With this plan in mind I’m perplexed as to what to use for ceiling surface. It’s 4x 9’ up to the front edge of fan being where 38” storage space above the cab is. Being that portion is curved some I’m thinking of sliding a 4x8 sheet of something from front on back cutting out 16” portion from fan to end of sheet. My thought is to attach the center portion having planks with lighting already attached as one piece before hand. There is furring strips to screw in to. The planks are so lightweight they could be attached with 3m double sided heavy duty Velcro tape. Then could spice in the remaining side portions of the ceiling then attach the remaining planks. There would be a color variation on ceiling surface from reflective white in center to a matte black behind the side planks..So what material to use for ceiling sheet. I see you used 1” insulation which I had considered initially and have been concerned that 1/2” is not enough. it’s conceivable I could kill 2 birds with1 stone utilizing a sheet of 1/2” rigid foam (being semi sturdy and pliable) attached to the existing polyiso for added ins and sound proofing. Perhaps the OC Pink Formular is available in a 4x10. Polyiso or XPS?? Using a strong foam board adhesive attach 1/8” material (some sheets have white reflective surface) screwed on up then attach planks. Kind of a mind bender I realize but interested in what your thoughts might be. Shoot me an email if you care to pmjs1955@hotmail. Thx
Hey Fernando, sorry for the late response on this. I screwed some pieces of wood into my metal van ceiling and screwed the cedar planks into that with short screws after locking the edges together. Hope that helps!
How do you like the cedar and what finish used keeping the aroma. What did you use on walls? Wondering if u have pics of van completed. I just install mineral wool wall, doors ceiling and wondering if to cover it with just fabric or stretch carpet for max sound absorbing properties. Does it need a wood type substrate or is fabric alright?
Hey Paul, sorry for the delayed response. I actually did not finish my cedar ceiling planks with anything, and unfortunately the cedar aroma is long gone it seems. My walls are 1/4” thick plywood that has been painted white, and I am not too sure how the fabric would work to be honest. It sounds like it would look nice though 👍🏼
Thank you very much! I absolutely plan for more van videos in the future but I have been working on so many other projects for the past few months and it’s been useful for hauling stuff around. Stay tuned!
First I screwed wooden battens into the steel of the ceiling with self tapping screws. Then I snapped the cedar planks together, being that the pieces I bought are tongue and groove. Then I ran some screws up through the cedar into the wooden battens to secure them. Let me know if that makes sense, it’s been months since I installed it unfortunately.
Build is unfortunately not going at the moment. I still intend to finish it but my wife and I have been so busy with other projects that I haven’t made progress in the van in months. Hope to get back into it soon!
GOT TO LAUGH! I TOO HAVE A 02 4RUNNER LIMITED ALL DONE FOR OVERLANDING. NOW I WANT TO SELL IT AND CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR A GMC SAVANA TO DO THE EXACT SAME BUILD OUT, ONLY DOING THE RED CEDAR ABOUT 36" UP THE CENTER CIELING.
Sorry for the lack of van content! It’s wild that it’s become my most viewed video but I’ve been swamped with all of my other projects lately. I promise I will upload many more van videos in the future!
That paint was a result of manufacturers changing over from solvent based paints to water based paint required by new EPA regulations. It took several years for the process to get perfected and a lot of cars suffered from paint peeling.....my neighbor got a free paint job from Ford, they did it as part of a "hidden warranty", it wasn't advertised and no one told you but if you went to the dealer and complained loud enough they would repaint the vehicle.
@@David-rx2to You'll be fine, the automakers have resolved the issue years ago, I have a 2010 GMC Savana 1500 van and the finish is fine, however, I'm on my third transmission. The first and original lasted 38K miles, replaced under warranty, then, the second trans went out at 87K, I had to buy that one, same problem as the first..... third and fourth clutch plates burned out. Now at 103K miles, I'm holding my breath. This van is not in commercial service mostly I use it for around town, just general driving, nothing strenuous, I have outfitted it out as a camper van, with solar, beds, a refrigerator etc, and we travel around camping and sight-seeing.... I probably won't buy another GMC product, next van will be a Ford Transit high top. Cheers!
Oh boy, one problem behind me but maybe another ahead. My GMC 2500 Savana has the 6.0 and a 6 speed transmission. Is that the same combo you have in your 1500? I'm in the process of building mine out into a campervan right now.
Nothing against the work you’ve put into the Blog for the van, but the videos are so much cooler!!! Nice job dude. The lighting is killer and as a cedar fan I gotta ask.... does it have that cedar smell??
I would have to agree dude, it’s realllly hard to stay motivated on the blog now haha. And yes the inside smells like you climbed inside the trunk of a cedar tree. I love it
Hey Stacy, sorry for the lack of posts. I’ve got so many projects running at once and I’ve been using the van to move lots of materials around. I will get back to the van videos one day soon though, I promise!
Don’t be nervous! Just take your time and make sure you get your lines drawn right where you want them. Try to picture the van finished and make sure the fan will be where you like it 👍🏼
Sorry for the lack of videos, the van has been used for hauling stuff around for a few months so I haven’t made any videos. More will come in the future!

How did you attach that cedar ceiling? Looks like you just stuck it on. No screws? I'm so confused.

'Let There Be Light.....' And there was light, and it was good.... gonna follow you thru this one.
Very nice build so far. I plan on purchasing a Chevy Express cargo van, build it out as a camper and travel through AZ.
The 4Runner was sooooo sick though. The van is rad too! can't wait to see finished!
I loved that thing like crazy man haha. But the van will serve a much cooler purpose!
So interested in the Chevy Espress van build. Did you do any other vids about it?
Thank you for watching! Unfortunately life has been a bit all over the place this year and I have not had much time to work on the van. I have made progress and will make more videos about it in the future though, stay tuned!
Nice job❤
SO, the van, what happened with the van? did you have issues with the engine??
When you did your subfloor did you have three sheets of thick metal and If so how did you remove them? Lovely the van!
Thank you! I didn’t have any metal on the floor in mine except for the original steel floor of the van.

Darn Paul - I clicked on your channel link but you don't have any videos posted. Darn. Darn. Darn.
How do the planks stay up. Just by edge slot? How do you start it then?
Hey Fernando, sorry for the late response on this. I screwed some pieces of wood into my metal van ceiling and screwed the cedar planks into that with short screws after locking the edges together. Hope that helps!
UA-cam recommend you vid today. Well made Taylor.
Thank you! Hopefully I will work on the van more in a few weeks. I’ve been busy with other projects.

Came here, watched, now looking for the rest of the build! Are you planning to do more build videos? This one was great!
Thank you very much! I absolutely plan for more van videos in the future but I have been working on so many other projects for the past few months and it’s been useful for hauling stuff around. Stay tuned!
I really want to build out a Chevy van myself as a tow rig/vanlife for the track too.
Do it! These vans can be really cheap and they’re just so nice to have.
Did you have seats in your van? Lovely build
I just have the two seats up front, mine was a cargo van so there weren’t any seats in the rear
How did you fasten the cedar to the ceiling? I may have missed that part!
@@tylergarlatz1577 I actually JUST did mine that way about a week ago. We don't have a UA-cam channel, but check it out on the 'gram @L84churchvan
Will do! Haven’t made progress on mine in a while but I will definitely be getting back to it soon
Looks great!
Much appreciated!
How's the build going? I've got a similar setup I'm getting ready to start.
Build is unfortunately not going at the moment. I still intend to finish it but my wife and I have been so busy with other projects that I haven’t made progress in the van in months. Hope to get back into it soon!
Beautiful job.
Thank you!
Thank you!
What year is that van because my Is a 2007 express 250
My van is a 2005 3500 extended!

what's with the paint peeling off your hood and fenders? I understand it is a widespread problem with Chevy/GMC white vans.
Man I wish I knew. Every time it gets windy I walk through my yard picking up chunks of paint. It’s basically a given with these vans
Thanks for the information. I bought a 2019 2500 and I'm worried it will start peeling. Hope they had the paint figured out by then.

Nice job starting a ford E350 window van myself. Cedar looks great. Lights are from Amazon?

Thanks for the kind words Laura! Sorry you didn’t enjoy the soundtrack, maybe next time 👍🏼
