She did a set, sessions at West 54th. It was the first time she played live with a band. She does a spectacular performance of Iieee. If you can find it, you should definitely react to it.
Eeee, okay!
Best live broadcast ever. I remember 1998 junior in highschool sitting near the recording vcr editing out commercials lol Watched that over and over so amazing. Definitely check out Sessions At West 54th
odd, Black Dove is probably my favorite Tori Song & the bit that does it for me is the bit that you specifically called out.
Haha oops
Spark is absolutely stunning. One of her all time best.
In the US, there used to be a 'Public Service Announcement' that aired on TV/Radio around 7p that asked "It's 7pm, do you know where your child is?" because it was not uncommon for kids to be outdoors that late. It's clear Tori is harkening that, with 'spark' being a heartbreaking metaphor for the child she lost..
OMG! This album is so wonderful!! Tori is amazing!
How this whole album lost a Grammy to the Beastie Boys single Intergalactic is a crime.
I love that album but agreed wholeheartedly. A felony.
My absolute favorite from high school! Can't wait to watch... There's an incredible live performance of "i i e e e" on youtube that's definitely worth a listen, if just for the improvised extended outro. That might be my favorite Tori song- it feel like her mournful invocation of dark spirits after feeling betrayed by god. And the piano work on "Northern Lad" is so f*ing gorgeous. "Spark" disrupts the 3/4 lullaby time signature with irregular time signature changes-- a fascinating musical nod to the miscarriage. Oh, and "Playboy Mommy" is so heartbreaking and real (even if not really Tori's life story per se). I agree about not clicking with "Black Dove," but I'm a fan of "Pandora's Aquarium."
Loved reading all of this!!! Thank you!!! ❤️❤️
I remember junior yr sitting by the TV recording Sessions on the vcr editing commercials to then watch a million times over lol
i am so happy you reacted to this album. i love this album more than life itself, oh my god.
🖤🖤🖤
What I've always loved about Liquid Diamonds is the fade in and fade out; it has always made ne think of a tide coming in and going out. 🌊
Yay! This is my Favorite Tori album. It’s so perfect and it was the first album I’d ever heard of hers back in 1998. I feel similarly about Pandora, but I love Black Dove. So happy you appreciated the dark and grittiness of it. 🖤🖤🖤
My favourite by her too!
raspberry swirl is genuinely amazing icl
I love Pandora, but I think Purple People should have closed the album.
really looking forward to you listening to To Venus and Back. it's my favorite.
So great, thanks for doing this one ❤
iieee is my favorite.
absolute masterpiece
Heck yeah, Tori ❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
Northern Lad is my song
Really surprised by your 'Black Dove' take... certainly one of the album's strongest songs, by my reckoning. Everyone has their tastes, of course, but the jarring changes were deliberate and in service of the lyrical subject: ostensibly, a victim of traumatic events 'by the woods, by the woods, by the woods' and the dissociative, survival reaction that transported them 'to the other side of the galaxy"....
Did you skip Boys For Pele? Or did I miss it? It's my favourite, but generally not a record that one can fully appreciate on the first listen.
Nooo, I have, I just haven’t edited for youtube yet - but you’re right, a harder listen 😂
I was wondering the same thing! It is MUCH harder to appreciate the first time around, but so good.
@@bennshouts so happy to read that there will be a review of Boys for Pele by you. Can't wait. Thank you so much, Benn, for picking up Tori again!!!
It has so many great moments but I find it hard to listen to. It's pretty eccentric. I would rank this, Earthquakes, and Under the Pink above it.
@@FindingMadonna well, for me personally Boys for Pele is my all time favorite of Tori, and then it's earthquakes, hotel and pink for me. Unpopular opinion, I know, lol!
Black Dove will only take you a handful more listens to get used to those changes 😊
Like you, iieee, Northern Lad and Playboy Mommy were the ones that hit me right away, and I've never tired of them 😊
Pandora took me about, I dunno, 15 years to appreciate 😅 and Cocaine... meh. Back when I first discovered Choirgirl, I subbed Cocaine for an epic little number called Siren, off the Great Expectations soundtrack ('97); and replaced Pandora with a b-side called Purple People.
No shit though, Benn, Siren is literally four minutes of fucking perfection 👌 When Madonna said they only had 4 minutes to save the world, Tori Amos (understanding the assignment) played Siren. Which obviously worked because, well, here we are! 😂😂😂 (ngl I just had a nice tasty joint 😜 and I'm wondering if that comment will be as hilarious tomorrow as I think it is now 🙊🙊🙊).
Also, whilst we're kind of on the topic, I urge you to have a smoke before/during your second spin of Pele. Sounds like I'm just being goofy but no. Weed will help you tap into the world of Pele. You'll be amazed. Venus is another THC-friendly record ✌
Of course, you may not even be a smoker...lol that literally only just occurred to me now 🤦♂️😂 In which case...well, just carry on, I suppose... 😊😊😊
Playboy Mommy and iieee are my absolute favorites from this album (if you can, check out the iieee live performance from the Live Sessions, it's pretty intense). Never been a fan of Black-Dove, so I totally relate to your reaction hahaha. It's not a bad song at all, I think most fans like it and she used to open the shows in 98 with it, but it leaves me cold. Pandora's Aquarium, on the other hand, was an acquired taste. It put me off at first, but now I think it's one of her greatest songs. I think it's very similar to Liquid Diamonds in the way that both have this dark, jazzy, underworldly (does this word exist?) atmosphere. I think it's really evocative, but its placement really does it no favors haha.
HAHA, right?! The FINAL song placement is not it 😂
Fun fact: “Pandora’s Aquarium” was originally meant to be the opening song on this album. Ha. Imagine. Thank God she was convinced otherwise. Anyway, I love me some Torn Anus. I can’t wait for more album reactions from you.
Omg, thank GOD she moved it! 😂
It feels like a Pele song to me so it might have made sense as a "transition" to the new sound? Not my favorite, but it doesn't bother me as a closing track. I prefer it to "She's Your Cocaine" anyway.
Torn Anus 😂
So good!
My fav Tori Amos album!
playboy mommy- a truly great song.
Obsessed!
This is probably my second favorite Tori album after Little Earthquakes, but I also love Under the Pink so it's a tough call. I associate this album with Ray of Light because it came out a few months later and they both were experimenting with electronica. I'm surprised by your dislike of "Black Dove." It's not my favorite song on the album, but it fits nicely and I like the tone switch-up. I prefer it to "Northern Lad" musically. I don't disagree with you about "Pandora" but it doesn't bother me that much. Not sure if you've reacted to Boys for Pele yet, but this song would fit on that album. "She's Your Cocaine" is the one definite skip for me. I've never liked it and it doesn't belong on the album IMO.
Haha I love seeing Pandora not being a huge fave with many 😂 Yep have done BFP on Patreon havent edited it for youtube yet x
Calling Playboy Mommy the worst song is mentally ill ohmygod
… when did i say this?
Watch the video for Spark!!
OMG, I couldn't press play fast enough... watching now.
PJ Harvey is the next artist you need to cover when it comes to legendary 90s alternative girls. Start with either To Bring You My Love or Is This Desire? Both are amazing albums
Cool to see that you liked this one. Longtime Tori fan, and I agree with a lot of your commentary here. Almost thought you were going to pass on iieee, but then you were feeling it. Such a standout track. Spark is one of my faves (the video is a must see, one of her best)
Haha it crept up on me!
Wow. I knew he would hate pandora's. My fav song of her
LOL, at least you know me well?
And yeah, when you've had a Northern Lad (well not exactly had) the song hits really hard. So emotive and relatable.
Totally 🥲
I’ve been watching you for 2 years, mostly for the Majourney, but Tori and Fiona have been great surprises! I think you’ll like scarlet’s walk, it’s Tori’s last great album, from 2002. My main reason for the shout out…did you name check Buffy and the Bronze!?!? My favorite show EVER! And, I get the Majourney. Love it!! 🔥🔥🔥
Haha yasssss! Best show ever, currently rewatching it, on season 3, so its fresh in my mind 😍 Thanks for watching for so long! And finally commenting! ❤️❤️
Would love to see you do a react to the music videos from this album. There’s only 3. So good.
I fucking love this album. Strawberry swirl and Jackie's strength. One of my dessert island album.
On Cruel you made me laugh talking about Havana's being underwear haha I think she's taking about perfectly rolled havana cigars. The best you can get. You made me smile though ❤❤
Yessssss
Do you remember if Hotel, the lyrics from it at the end were written by a guy onto the wall after he unalived his friend (undented tori website)? I can't find the news articles anymore. It was disturbing. "Exit 75 I'm still alive".
I think black dove will grow on you, it’s Tori’s aural version of a nightmare, there’s a barely contained hysteria similar to that of Spark. Go back and listen again :)
Oooh this is a great take. Black Dove is definitely a favorite 🖤
I think you’d really love In The End It Always Does by The Japanese House, my favourite release of last year! I think you’ll love the production and lyrics!! 💖
