@stephanie padakis YES. I was 12 when it came out and it rocked my world and continues to even 30 years later. Boys for Pele is definitely my favorite of her albums, even though two of my tattoos are references to "Crucify" (and Maya Angelou, since the lyrics reference her, and I reference the lyrics. LOL)

Tori was a child prodigy who started playing the piano at 2 1/2, was the youngest ever accepted to the Peabody Conservatory at 5, and then got kicked out at 11 for not conforming to the way of playing classical music that the school wanted her to. She then started playing gay bars in Washington DC at 13 (with her minister father as chaperone) , and eventually moved to LA to make it in the music industry. There she played piano bars for a decade before getting a record contract. Her first album was a late 80’s rock album with her then band “Y Kant Tori Read”, which failed miserably. She wrote and recorded Little Earthquakes after YKTR flopped, going back to her roots as a piano player instead of trying to be a version of Pat Benatar. So the songs on Little Earthquake are basically taken from her life up until that point, and about finding her voice after YKTR. “Silent All These Years” is sort of the mission statement of the album, in terms of themes.

Incidentally, you were very confused about the song "Mother", it's mostly about the time in her life when she attended the Peabody Conservatory, and the pressure of the expectations placed on her, from the song it seems her mother was the disciplinarian in this aspect of her life.

So happy you started your journey with Tori now! Her, Björk and Kate Bush were the 3 female artists that influenced me deeply during my adolescence and took part, at least partially, of shaping me as the human being I am today!
Sounds cheesy, I know, but it's the truth, man!
Can't wait till you get to "Boys for Pele", Tori's 3rd album, keep up listening to Björk's discography and please start reacting to Kate Bush's body of work, "Hounds of Love" is one of my all time faves! It's from 1985 and I could listen to it almost every day!

And it's worth noting that Tori writes all her own music-piano compositions and lyrics-and sings them.
Until recently, doing this was appreciated as impressive but not extraordinary for singer-songwriters.
I'd encourage you to delive into older music for this reason. Some contemporary artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Lady Gaga do write and sing their own music, but usually they collaborate with other songwriters and their songs credit many people who workshopped and contributed to them.
Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Fiona Apple, Regina Spektor and some others all write, sing and play all their own music without collaborators and without Autotune. Their talents are immense.
Tori and Kate also eventually began to produce their own music so that they could have full control of their works. That *is* unusual and few artists do this. Both built their own studios so that they could engineer their own recordings. They are supernaturally gifted.

Before you move on to the next album, Under the Pink, there are just tons of b-sides to her first few albums, just for this album you have: Take To the Sky, Flying Dutchman, The Pool, Here in my head, Upside Down, Sweet Dreams, Angie(Rolling Stones cover), Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana cover), Ode to the Banana King, Humpty Dumpty. I might have missed one or two, the woman is so prolific. I would HIGHLY recommend you check out at least the first 6 songs listed, they're good enough to be on the album(especially Flying Dutchman, one of my favorites), they just didn't make the cut.

@@NathanHautain really, I think Abnormally Attracted To Sin is quite good. Not a ton of standouts I suppose, but the production and overall sound quality is so much better than on American Doll Posse which has an overall kind of muddy sound. It’s also quite a cohesive and thematically centered album. She doesn’t have an awful album but I think her three classical albums are the biggest misses for me.

She's an extraordinary artist. It's normal not to be able to parse all lyrics to almost any song during a first listen. Tori's lyrics are almost always abstract, and believe it or not, Little Earthquakes is her most lyrically accessible and straightforward album. But don't be daunted by that. Her music and her voice likely will draw you in the more you listen, and the more you listen to her music, the more you will come to understand how to interpret the lyrics. It's not a gimmick, either: the cryptic quality of her songwriting opens intellectual and emotional doorways that lead to astonishing discoveries. I realize that that sounds hyperbolic, but you will understand what I mean if you progress through her albums and take time to absorb them. She is a musical and poetic genius and always has been extraordinarily wise, even when young, due to innate intelligence as well as a lot of hard life experiences. I have a graduate degree in creative writing and I paint and draw, and of all the artists I've ever studied, she is by far the one I appreciate most.
And yes, Kate Bush is similar in a lot of ways and she and Tori are equals as geniuses in my opinion; however, their similarities are mostly superficial, and if you listen to both closely for years, you'll learn that their music really is not similar in content and their talents are related but not the same. Each stands on her own and deserves attention.
I notice that you looked at your phone a lot while listening. Try playing this and other Tori albums while driving, going on a long walk or maybe working out, and you'll probably give the music greater attention and absorb it better.
I'm sure I have made it clear how much I appreciate Tori Amos's music. I still usually don't like her albums very much when I first listen to them because of the sounds, the length, sometimes a feeling that they seem boring or overlong. And then after more listens, each new album always becomes transfixing. She made a classical album, a "song cycle" (something like a novel made of music) that involves a ridiculous-sounding story of time and space travel under the influence of cactus juice and under the guidance of a shapeshifting fox/goose and a fire muse, who are played by her young daughter and niece, and I was really distraught when I read this description and the album turned out to be an absolute work of genius and one of her best creations-which is saying a lot. All the characterizations are based on mythic and historic and scientific aspects of being, along with psychological archetypes. One song called Battle of Trees is slow and plodding and I thought at first that it would be impossible to listen to all the way through-much of the song involves singing the names of different plants-but again, after a time, it all adds up alchemically to a lot more than the sum of its parts.
If you're willing to give her music (and Kate Bush's music!) the attention and contemplation it deserves, then you will likely find that it influences you as a person and how you perceive life, and you'll certainly find that most pop music pales by comparison.
Think of her music as literature and give it the attention you'd give a good but challenging book. That may seem like an overstatement, but it's advice that will become useful by the time you get to her third album. 😉

Check out her b-sides and covers too, I would suggest starting with her cover of Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" first and go from there

You should react to Kate Bush and Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom is, dare I say, the best songwriter of all time. I first listened to “Ys” new year’s day of 2021 and since then, Joanna has easily become my favourite artist of all time, no exaggeration. I could spend hours talking about the depth, meaning, and complexity of her songs. Her music is truly life changing and I recommend anyone reading this to check her out.

Me and A Gun was Tori's personal account of being raped when she's 22. No metaphors just straight from her soul. My favorite songs are Tear In Your Hand which is about a breakup and China, about a relationship gone sour. Anyways I enjoy your reaction very much. Please react to her next album which is Under the Pink. Thanks.

This wasn't even in my notifications! And I've been mentioning her so much I'm sure you were tired of hearing it haha. I can't believe it's been 30 years. I feel so old. Must remind myself I'm same age as Britney Spears LoL 😂. From The Choirgirl Hotel is her best.

winter was actually written about tori’s dad the chorus is like a conversation between them and it’s about tori wanting to make her father proud as she grows up and transitions into adulthood

one thing that you should know about her is that her dad was actually a methodist pastor and she had a religious upbringing , one thing she talks about lot in her music along with sexuality - the things that made her struggle with her identity and explore herself

Im so glad they were finally able to come together and have peace after all these years! Religion is so toxic… especially when it tears people apart!

If you are doing 90s art pop, maybe The Cardigans' Gran Turismo (1998), Deee-Lite's Infinity Within (1992), Faithless' Sunday 8PM (1998), Gusgus' This Is Normal (1999), Jesus Loves You's The Martyr Mantras (1990), Bran Van 3000's Glee (1997), Cibo Matto's Stereotype A (1999)... and maybe The Smashing Pumpkins' Adore (1998) (no it is not grunge at all, and it is experimental and clever at times). Great you start Tori's albums. Hope you will finish your Bjork's journey !

Songs like china and mother should have been b_sides, they drag the album down. Tracks that were omitted like Take To The Sky, and Upside Down should've been in their place.
