The two most underrated films I’ve seen this year are in the horror genre: 1. The Cursed: a Robert Eggers-esque atmospheric gem with werewolf mythology. 2. You Won’t be Alone: a dreamy, creepy horror drama about shape-shifting witches.
I just saw 'You Won't be Alone' last night and that was an incredible and different take on witches. You're definitely right about Dashcam Emma, it's a very polarizing horror movie. I able to get a screener for 'See For Me' and that was better than I thought it would be.
@MasterOnion North I do agree with you about the bleak atmosphere but I believe the director did that to show the harsh life the Macedonians lived back then.
I’m here to co-sign - Hellbender is one of my all time favorites - it’s terrifying in a very texturized kind of way (I’m thinking of the foraging and the kk d of magic 🪄 in the film) and I loved the mother daughter dynamic in the film. Just perfection 👌🏾 I also heard a horror loving family made the film and the music was really good too!
I agree. I was so surprised by how much I liked this movie. This family has created their own witch, I mean Hellbender, mythology and it's fantastic. I’m also a former thrash metal drummer and appreciated how well the music was and brilliantly incorporated into the story. Subtle, but great special effects - how it should be. And the cinematography was alive with motion and great.
I watched almost all of them from your video ☺️ but my favourites would be: Dashcam and You won’t be alone. This movie was so beautifully shot and the acting was mesmerising! A completely different uptake on witches which I really loved! Thank you for the video Emma 🤗
A great one to add (if you haven’t seen it yet), is Netflix’s The House, another great stop-motion offering. My faves, however, are: 1. Crimes of the Future 2. X 3. The Innocents 4. Scream 5. The Sadness Great video, as usual!
Great list! My favorites so far are X, Scream, Fresh, Studio 666, No Exit, Men, The Cursed, The Sadness, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (in that order). I still have so much to see tho!
I don't now that statistic, i loved the plot and the prison scene on Malignant maybe i do a chance to Dashcam (not my style, in that style i only liked Cloverfield and Blairwitch, others i saw sucks)
Hatching! I already forgot about that one! That was pretty solid. My top 2 so far are The Innocents and Hatching…but I still need to see The Black Phone (Thursday!), Watcher, and Men. Where’d you get your statistical info? 🤣 I loved Malignant. Been hesitant with Dashcam but do want to check it out. I was hesitant with Malignant too and was kinda surprised I loved it.
Most of my friends haven't heard of "X" or "Men", but I bet if it was the new "X-Men" they would've heard of it. Also, it will probably be decades until "Mad God" gets the recognition it deserves.
I 100% agree. Top 3 The innocents, X and you wont be alone, just great movies...I still have to see Dashcam and Men. Thanks so much, I always look forward to your videos.
Whoop! The Innocents! Never seen anything like it. Most tense viewing experience I’ve ever had. I have never had to pause a film before to take a breather. It was just too much so many times, but I loved it.
Wow, everything in this list sounds worth watching to me.. and I spend more time on UA-cam looking for recommendations or reviews than watching films. I really like deep thought mystery or horror the kind that helps me understand e observe the more obscure aspects of life and as usual this channel got me covered. Thank you for your unique taste in film and capacity to elaborate on films, you really are The reviewer that really has depth to her work.. I love your videos because you often transmit what your inner experience was with a film you don’t just give superficial explanations even in a short time. Truly a gem of a reviewer.
With you on loving these films, I’ve seen most and loved Hellbender. The film makers have done some other great Indy horror. Can’t wait to see Hatching and Men. We’re total horror/thriller freaks in our house! thanks so much for your reviews Emma and congrats on getting married 😊
A great and underrated horror-comedy that I feel like no one's talking about is Sweetie, You Won't Believe It. I feel it went pretty quietly under the radar, but it's like a mix between The Hangover and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's on Amazon Prime (at least in the US) and it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it! It's one of my favorites of the year so far.
Great list and great energy! I can’t believe we’re already half way through the year - blink and it’s 2023. X and You Won’t Be Alone. Polar opposites that are my fav’s also. Watching Mad God tonight! And looking to seeing Men so I can see what all the fuss is about. And now The Daughter is on my watchlist. Thank you!
Emma! First of all, thanks for your recommendations, pretty much all of them sounded great to me; I'll try to watch "You Won't be Alone" this night. Second, your corny jokes are adorable so please keep them coming, ok? :D
Definitely added a few to my watchlist! Tops out of this list are X, Scream, Men, And Studio 666(I agree it’s too fun not to list!) I also really enjoyed The Cursed which my wife and I just watched the other night. See for me was a decent flick but I thought was maybe drug out a hair too long. Great list Emma!
The best movie i saw so far this year is The Sadness... a movie from taiwan by canadian director Rob Jabbaz. Its insane in the best way possible, very gory and pretty disturbing.. must watch for all. And the song at the end of the movie is a treat for extreme metal lovers...
LOVED See for Me (and it is available on Shudder in Canada at least!)! I almost wrote "overlooked", so you're not alone on bad puns! 🤣Great list as always.
This isn’t a horror movie at all but my favorite film of 2022 so far (besides Everything Everywhere) is definitely Boiling Point and I really don’t think a lot of people have checked it out, so I am recommending it to everyone here, it’s super tense
i found out about The Innocents because of you and i was blown away when i watched, definitely one of my top movies of 2022 too also, i am DYING to see Men, but it doesn't come out here in Brazil till september 😭😭😭
I can’t wait for your take on Crimes of the Future, I hope it comes your way soon! It’s my favorite horror so far this year. Watcher is also excellent, very tense and Maika slays.
Perhaps you havent seen it but the spanish La Abuela is pretty good too. Creepy and tense. Also, No Exit is amazing too in its straight forwardness, more of a dark thriller though. My absolute favorites have to be X and Dashcam
Thanks always for the great recommendations. Watching The Innocents and You won't be alone back to back was pretty wild and I def had strange dreams that night lol I ended up watching the wrong Dashcam?? also a horror from 2021.
I watched The Innocents based on your dependable eye. It's more drama/sci-fi than horror or thriller but what a great movie. The way uncommon communication of the innocents(young/disabled) developed between the characters with increasing stakes was balanced, dramatic. It wasn't saccharin or predictable like most movies with similar premises can be. The mother was the same one from Thelma, another excellent Scandinavian production.
Glad you loved X, it was instantly in my list of favorites. I got to see it in theaters and I was the only one there. The audio was so spot on that several times I thought others were in the theater with me...
X was actually a pretty decent slasher. I think the elderly were creepy as hell of course so they did a good job with creeping me out. Now I just started watching Mad God but haven't finished it so I'm really excited for that. I love stop motion type animations.
My favorite so far that’s going to be extremely hard to top is “She Will” the movie comes out on July 15th, but I’ve had the pleasure of seeing it at a screening. It was AMAZING! Highly recommend everyone to go watch this, especially on the big screen if you have a chance. Its a feminst/witchy thriller/horror about revenge. Oscar worthy performance from Alice Krige. I cannot wait to watch it again.
Loved Dashcam! My husband and I were absolutely dying laughing, but it was also creepy and chaotic, of course. I thought it was a really well done mix 👏 SNL horror
So far I´ve seen Hatching, Studio 666, X, Scream and Fresh. I absolutely loved Studio 666 - so much fun and some good kills. Saw Hatching at the movie theatre. It was different, to say the least. I liked it, though. Best so far is X. Looking forward to the prequel. Thanks for this list, Emma! I´ve missed You won't be alone, but now it's on my to watch-list.
Yes! Been dying to watch Maika Monroe in Watcher along with Crimes of The Future, but I also understand why they don't have wide release because maybe they're not confident that they'll earn in smaller territories. So we Australians and other countries are always going to expect limited releases or no releases. Including Nope which is a terrible 3 week delay from US.
X is by far the best horror experience of 2022 so far. Going to see The Black Phone next week which may surpass it. I watched that film Dashcam the other day. By far the biggest pile of crap I’ve seen this year. The latest Scream was excellent too. Looking forward to Halloween Ends and Terrifier 2.
BTW Archive 81 the new series, I found by scrolling the comments and is by Far the most entertaining and engaging show I found from this list lol. (The list is good just A81 is what really got me) I find it more engaging than Midnight Mass, I’m really picky about watching things if I’m not fully engaged I usually drop it and Archive 81 immediately got me.. just sharing if anyone’s wondering what to watch and don’t want to spend all night trying to find.
I was checking my Letterboxd log and the only three movies with 4 stars or more, that have come out this year/last year are X and The Sadness, with 4 stars each and Scream with 4.5. I really want to see some of the ones you mentioned here so I'll start looking for dates if they are going to the cinemas or streaming platforms.
I can't stop adding films to my watchlist ! I'll leave one for you, The intruder (Argentina) came out last year and it's quite chilling and strange, maybe you've already watched jajaja but anyway, I leave the recommendation if you're interested in some non english speaking film :)
Hi Emma, this is my first time watching your video. Horror isn’t my go-to genre but I wrote down 5 titles to check out (Mad God,You Won't Be Alone,The Innocents,The Daughter/La Hija,You Are Not My Mother) and actually saw one at a film festival last year, See for Me. I actually found you when looking for more confirmation on The Golden Glove. I removed it from my list. I subscribed and I’ll be back. Thanks!
you know what, I am impressed that you, (sorry I don't know your name) let all these movies into your mind and soul and let them affect you. this is a very brave thing to do. these are horror movies and a lot of them or way too disturbing and frightening to let into my head. don't you have some spooky dreams sometimes? you said paranormal activity and Martyrs are movies that really scared you. the same here. I find these 2 extremely frightening as well and they didn't let me fall asleep easy for months.
Hey Emma, I am an Indian and is regularly watching your videos.I need to say I am a huge horror thriller fan and have watched almost all your recommended movies. Your videos simply are awesome and help me find the spooky movies different one's you know.Waiting for your July recommendations.Love you .....Tadaaaaa......
Hi, i just learned of your channel this week and i love it, you gave me direction to some real awesome movies i would have overlooked before and some i knew of but was not sure if i should waste my time, great channel and keep it going.
Mad God!!! Definitely a visual masterpiece. Stop motion is my favorite type of film, and the director worked on Jurassic Park.. I was pretty hyped for it.
Loved Dashcam, outrageous bold and propulsive, and i think netflix' Choose or Die is really underrated. But my favorite underseen indie slasher this year is Student Body, really great stuff in there, one PA system music sequence in particular.
Mad God is a trip. Amazing visuals. It's a stop-motion/live-action hybrid, pretty unusual but effective. It took 30 years to make because he stopped work on it for 20 years when Jurassic Park came out and he thought stop-action was dead. It's definitely one to check out, for those who haven't yet.
always thankful for your recommendations!!! i just saw watcher and came to your channel to see what you thought of it. will be looking forward to your review. also finished yellowjackets today (since you recommended last year) and i absolutely loved it!!!
Hi Emma, first time watcher...No clue who you were, but for some reason I completely trust you're taste and I'm about to watch like most of these movies!! So thanks for the recommendations and I'll be subscribing and I know who you are now lol 💜☠
Not sure if I’m late and you’ve already spoken about this series in another video but EVIL the horror to show was one of my fav watches for this year! Low key funny but creepy too :)
I haven't seen much because many that I was excited about haven't been released here (and some actually came out last year) but my top 5 so far would be Fresh, X, The Sadness, La abuela (The Grandmother) and Candyman. Really excited for The Black Phone, hopefully I can see it soon🥺
In my experience it’s never good when a film is postponed multiple time (Black Phone). Usually it means it doesn’t do well with test audiences ( which totally pisses me off). So most likely the editors will dumb it down and the film won’t be what the director intended. Anyway, love your channel and can’t wait for the rest of the year!
Hey, I’ve actually spoken to universal about this. It just because they have had multiple block buster releases in a short period, like Jurassic park. So they are waiting for a gap in the market
I've only seen X and Scream from your list. Gawd, I had a massive HORROR DROUGHT this year. I need to keep up!!! Thanks for the list, enjoyed the vid so much. I can't wait to watch The Innocents
Oh I’ve Watched Only 3 movies from your list 😭 Because it’s not easy to watch movies without subtitles … I’ve Watched ( X … Scream and You Are Not My Mother ) I really like all these movies and I will add ( The Cursed ) On The List … it was underrated Movie … I can’t wait to watch the rest of them Thank you Emma 🙏
I lovedddd X, Fresh, The Black Phone and See for Me! I think my favorite for the year has got to be Fresh though. As soon as I finished it I immediately restarted the movie and I’ve never had an experience like that!
My favorites of the year so far have been Fresh, X and Men. I’m so glad you said that you liked Men cuz I feel like I’m in the minority. That’s so stupid that the title alone made some people refuse to watch it. At least watch a film before you judge it. I’m so annoyed that people get so angry at even an inkling of social commentary in horror films.🙄
I watched You Won't Be Alone last night even though I remember you talking about some animal issues in a previous video. I decided to go in anyway after doing a little research. I had a different reaction than many people it seems. I felt that it was beautiful and touching, not dark or horrific at all. I read a review that called it "horror adjacent", which made me laugh. It didn't feel like a horror to me at all, more of an artsy folk drama. Big thumbs up from me!
I just rented both DashCam and You Won't Be Alone, watching them this weekend so I can understand why your voice gets higher when you talk about them :P haha
The two most underrated films I’ve seen this year are in the horror genre:
1. The Cursed: a Robert Eggers-esque atmospheric gem with werewolf mythology.
2. You Won’t be Alone: a dreamy, creepy horror drama about shape-shifting witches.
I definitely agree with you about The Cursed. It’s my favorite horror movie of the year and so far in my top 3 behind The Batman and Top Gun
Yes!!!
The cursed was sooooooo good
You Won't Be Alone is now in my top 10 i loved that movie so much
Where can I watch "you won't be alone"?
I just saw 'You Won't be Alone' last night and that was an incredible and different take on witches. You're definitely right about Dashcam Emma, it's a very polarizing horror movie. I able to get a screener for 'See For Me' and that was better than I thought it would be.
@MasterOnion North I do agree with you about the bleak atmosphere but I believe the director did that to show the harsh life the Macedonians lived back then.
Hellbender is one of my new favorite horror movies-unique and truly horrifying.
Yes! Mine too and after Hellbender I went watching all the other movies by these directors

I’m also a former thrash metal drummer and appreciated how well the music was and brilliantly incorporated into the story.
Subtle, but great special effects - how it should be. And the cinematography was alive with motion and great.
What about the night house. Loved that one. Not from 2022 but 2021
I watched almost all of them from your video ☺️ but my favourites would be: Dashcam and You won’t be alone. This movie was so beautifully shot and the acting was mesmerising! A completely different uptake on witches which I really loved!
Thank you for the video Emma 🤗
A great one to add (if you haven’t seen it yet), is Netflix’s The House, another great stop-motion offering.
My faves, however, are:

2. X
3. The Innocents
4. Scream
5. The Sadness
Great video, as usual!
Great list! My favorites so far are X, Scream, Fresh, Studio 666, No Exit, Men, The Cursed, The Sadness, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (in that order). I still have so much to see tho!
Excellent... Excellent... Excellent... Selection! Emma. My 3 favorites are:
1- dash cam
2- Innocent
3- Hatching
Statistical data: 93.37% of those who liked "Dash Cam" also liked "Malignant".
Nothing like pick a spookyastronauts watchlist movie, a good bottle of australian wine, and be afraid to turn the lights off.
Most of my friends haven't heard of "X" or "Men", but I bet if it was the new "X-Men" they would've heard of it. Also, it will probably be decades until "Mad God" gets the recognition it deserves.
don’t ever apologize for your accent Emma, love your channel☺️
"You Are Not My Mother" is genuinely on my (long) favourite horrors ever list
that dance scene made my skin crawl. Anyone who ever had a bipolar mother knows that vibe.
Really enjoyed it to.. 👻
Yeah, "Mad God" was incredible.
OMG! I loved THE INNOCENTS! So much so that I posted a review on our show too.
Thank you!
"I like what I like" Love your attitude You are beyond cool 😺
Emma! First of all, thanks for your recommendations, pretty much all of them sounded great to me; I'll try to watch "You Won't be Alone" this night. Second, your corny jokes are adorable so please keep them coming, ok? :D
loved your BREAKDOOOOOOWN ✨
I've waited for "You Won't Be Alone", I can't wait
This isn’t a horror movie at all but my favorite film of 2022 so far (besides Everything Everywhere) is definitely Boiling Point and I really don’t think a lot of people have checked it out, so I am recommending it to everyone here, it’s super tense
Thanks for the list! Also...the "Dead Inside" moment was perfection. lol
Thanks for the recommendations, Emma. Thought the sadness might be here. It's pretty full on.
I love that you brought up Shut In! I didn't think that film would get a lot of attention. I thought it was very simple and well done.
Highly recommend “Watcher” solid atmospheric psychological thriller
My favorite Horror movie so far this year is definitely “X”
i found out about The Innocents because of you and i was blown away when i watched, definitely one of my top movies of 2022 too
also, i am DYING to see Men, but it doesn't come out here in Brazil till september 😭😭😭
¡E legal!👉😃👈
I can’t wait for your take on Crimes of the Future, I hope it comes your way soon! It’s my favorite horror so far this year. Watcher is also excellent, very tense and Maika slays.
Perhaps you havent seen it but the spanish La Abuela is pretty good too. Creepy and tense.
Also, No Exit is amazing too in its straight forwardness, more of a dark thriller though.
My absolute favorites have to be X and Dashcam
Great video/list! Thanks, Emma!
Fresh was fantastic! I watched it blind (without reading a synopsis or seeing a trailer) and so glad I did. Lots of surprises ;)
Me 2..what a ride
omg i LOVED Fresh it was so good imo
Thanks always for the great recommendations. Watching The Innocents and You won't be alone back to back was pretty wild and I def had strange dreams that night lol I ended up watching the wrong Dashcam?? also a horror from 2021.
Can't wait for your review of Watcher
I watched The Innocents based on your dependable eye. It's more drama/sci-fi than horror or thriller but what a great movie. The way uncommon communication of the innocents(young/disabled) developed between the characters with increasing stakes was balanced, dramatic. It wasn't saccharin or predictable like most movies with similar premises can be. The mother was the same one from Thelma, another excellent Scandinavian production.
See For Me was highly underrated, really original concept and well acted
Glad you loved X, it was instantly in my list of favorites. I got to see it in theaters and I was the only one there. The audio was so spot on that several times I thought others were in the theater with me...
I enjoyed x too. Great movie
You won't be alone became one of my all time favorites. Loved the movie

Emma if you missed The Cursed definitely check it out. By far the best horror film I've seen this year.
I saw it! I didn’t like it 🥲
I'm new here so I don't know if you talked about it in another video but Dual is my favorite movie of the year so far 👀
Loved Dashcam! My husband and I were absolutely dying laughing, but it was also creepy and chaotic, of course. I thought it was a really well done mix 👏 SNL horror
Hellbender was incredible. One of my favorites of all time.
X, The Sadness, and Dashcam are 3 of my favorites so far....Scream and TCM were descent.

@MasterOnion North Maybe.....
@MasterOnion North You should check her out in "After Everything". She's the lead in that movie (a drama). Pretty good film.
Innocents was fantastically shot, great performances, mainly from kids, well paced, loved it, yes definitely disturbing and dark.
Love this list! Going to try to watch them all!
This was great and spooky good!

Hi Emma, first time watcher...No clue who you were, but for some reason I completely trust you're taste and I'm about to watch like most of these movies!! So thanks for the recommendations and I'll be subscribing and I know who you are now lol 💜☠
My favourite one's are hatching and x. I really enjoyed first kill tv series also.
It is so good :))
loved the video as usual !! :D
The shining vale series was surprisingly good
My Top 5 So Far:
1. Mad God
2. The Sadness
3. Fresh
4. X
5. The House
Awesome! That makes me feel way better about the movie. You are a queen!!!!! And love all your content.
Yaaay ‘Mad God’! Glad to see that getting love. If you haven’t yet seen ‘Watcher’, I highly recommend it. Thanks for all the recommendations! :)
girl, i have almost the exact movie taste as you❤️❤️❤️
I'm planning on watching Mad God tonight. I loved the trailer.
The music in Fresh was perfection.
I watched "The Sadness" recently and now I'm afraid of old Asian men with umbrellas and what they might do to my eye hole. I've said too much......
Ah love these videos so much! It helps me catch up on all the ones I miss because I’m always a year behind lol. Thanks Emma!! Also “BREAKDOWNNNNN🤣🤣”
It’s breeeakkkkkdowwwnnnnn timeee
I've only seen X and Scream from your list. Gawd, I had a massive HORROR DROUGHT this year. I need to keep up!!! Thanks for the list, enjoyed the vid so much. I can't wait to watch The Innocents
Thank you for giving me a movie to watch tonight dashcam is right up my alley
We’re All Going To The Worlds Fair!!! Absolutely the most topical and terrifying movie I’ve seen this year
I didn't know X was filmed in New Zealand and not in Texas. That's so cool!
Oh I’ve Watched Only 3 movies from your list 😭 Because it’s not easy to watch movies without subtitles … I’ve Watched ( X … Scream and You Are Not My Mother ) I really like all these movies and I will add ( The Cursed ) On The List … it was underrated Movie … I can’t wait to watch the rest of them
Thank you Emma 🙏
I lovedddd X, Fresh, The Black Phone and See for Me! I think my favorite for the year has got to be Fresh though. As soon as I finished it I immediately restarted the movie and I’ve never had an experience like that!
I really liked the Celler on Shudder 🤘🤘🤘
Hey, I think your mixing up The Innocence which has the animal cruelty, you won’t be alone is indeed beautiful
I think it was something about the donkeys. But it was all off screen and not a big deal.
Thank you, Emma! 🤘
I just rented both DashCam and You Won't Be Alone, watching them this weekend so I can understand why your voice gets higher when you talk about them :P haha
Haha! You’ll love a you won’t be alone Omayra! I know it!!!
i Love your Australian accent and i like the way you look when you talk like that.
