Today while digging through bookshelves i found an old book about ocean liners. When I picked this up out came a drawing of the titanic and an old pamphlet of this ship from 1982.
Weird, never seen this footage, but that's me at 02:12 . Definitely a weird experience, was asleep and thought the ship hit the dock at first...then everything went quiet and could smell diesel. Captain came over intercom to order us to lifeboat stations, but could hear the chaos in background. After a while he told us to go to our cabins grab our stuff and abandon ship. Only later did we find out what had happened.
As a travel agent, I took several groups on board. My son became a cruise DJ for a couple of years. We made permanent friends, (some no longer here) and my Mom's first cruise after my father passed. She met and had a long conversation with Phillis Diller. I loved it when they had tv and movie stars regularly. Also superbowl and their big rings. Bobby Ridel, Jerry VanDike, Marvin Hamlish and more.
this was the first cruise ship i sailed when i was 16 and it was so beautiful and simple , now there are to many people and to many things going on , on ships, love the S.S.NORWAY!!!
Did you know a girl named Tara who was one of the entertainers on the ship? Think she was from Canada. Blonde girl. I met her on the ship when I was 15. She wrote me via post card and old emails shortly after we got back. Lost contact .
it was a steam tank that had been welded with copper instead of the proper rods. copper fools the x ray so the inspectors couldn't see the repair on the radiograph. also the engineers failed to pay close attention to their water chemistry which caused internal surfaces to deteriorate and crack
This was more of NCL's fault for deciding to lower their repairs attention to the Norway. I have no clue why they chose to give less attention to Norway during her final years. It was a vessel over 40 years old, of course it's going to have problems.
That's true, she would most likely have been retired pretty soon anyway. Lack of proper maintenance was obviously a reason for this explosion. She was actually a little more than 40 years old (maiden voyage in 1962). It's a very long time for a ship of this size anyway.
@@bagelq2028 It's a little more than the engines. Old ships, at least big ones, start to suffer from metal fatique, meaning that even the life time of a hull is limited. The life time of big cargo ships that are more open inside than passenger ships is normally about 25 years. Waves cause torsions in the hull that lead to metal fatique.
@@bagelq2028 Exactly my thoughts. NCL should've built a new Norway instead of that hideous Norwegian Epic. This "cruise box" was built in the same shipyard as the SS France (the original name of SS Norway). But it's easy. Just give me a billion and I will build a new one. What do you want? The equipment is _OLD!_ Since 1962 and thousands of Trans Atlantic journeys as first the _France_ and then the _Norway_ ... Bringing things up to date (such as conversion to diesel electric generation) probably wasn't worth the expense!
At that time, it was still a possibility that it was a terror attack. They locked the ship down and wouldn't let anybody off the ship until they knew it wasn't.
WTF ARE YOU MAD! One, its sadly already scrapped because of people like you and two you REALLY prefure the floating rolling pieces of ugly crap we have today, if so you must be blind and/or stupid. People like you are what caused this great loss in history, the loss of the S.S France/S.S Norway
It was eventually scrapped, but took awhile to scrap it because it was rejected countless times by countries under the Basel Convention. It contained extremely large volumes of asbestos making demolition and scrapping a huge challenge for both the environment (what do you do with all of that asbestos) and for worker safety.

Same here. I was 14-15.. In 2002 I believe

I spent a lot of time on this ship doing refits, love this boat, was onboard when the generator room caught on fire and I done all the repairs

Hey, that was the ocean liner from There Goes a Boat!
The beginning of the end for the Norway.
So sad and so preventable.
Why preventable
Rip Norway 🇳🇴
I think it was aging. By that time the Norway was almost 40 years old. It was an inevitability.

QE2 also why is that in this video the norway looks short and tiny compared to the royal Caribbean ship
That was my favourite ship
Same..
My wife and I where on that ship when it happen
what a sound.... sounds liked haunted infernal death.....
As it turned out it was faulty maitinence which cause the accident. including shoddy repairs.
I'd be curious to see where you got that info from. Do you have a link where the findings are published ?
It's in the NTSB report
Faulty maintenance or intentional sabotage by a company wanting to get rid of a ship?

They couldnt just be a couple, they had to be called an elderly couple. 😢
8 crew members ended up dying.

Cruise ships scare me,Still hope to go on one though.
It's a wonderful experience.
Dont be to be honest the Norway isnt even made for Cruises
Omg I like this Horn of the ship
RIP SS France 1962-2006
Why did they make the passengers go to the muster station they could have evacuated through the gangways

8 deaths.
Scrap it period.
STFU!!!!!!!
Shut up, the Norway was a better ship than any of the floating condos these days!
