- Communicating on the radio is a vital skill in Space Station, and can be a bit confusing how it all works. This video explains how to use your headset, and briefly explains how the system works as a whole.

One last thing is that the wall intercoms always broadcast as long as it has power, so don't sleep on the intercoms. If something is going bad, and you still have power and access to a wall intercom, you can always speak into one and it'll always broadcast on that channel (as long as there's no jammer involved).
Note, if a artifact has a radio function, they do not care about radio jammers.
Very important note: You only need to be CLOSE to the radio to use it, so other people can accidentally talk on it. You can hide radios with the mic ON in many places. You can even use it as an self defense tool when , as a lot of antag tends to want to "gloat roleplay" on their kills.
I used to roleplay as a lawyer , tell them you want to talk to the client AFTER they searched them and keep a radio in their pocket on a frequency, then have a tape-record on the other end during their "interview" that you present during court of law (NO space law have said this is not OK, space law DO tell the security to search the prisoners PROPERLY).
I don't know if this works in SS14 and used to do this to troll in SS13 as a clown/mime.A more low-effort "clownery" is just running around the station and turning on ALL the microphones on the intercoms, so random chats get broadcasted and you point out to them "Wrong chat?" and then when they check it was not the wrong chat in the first place, Clownery.
If you want a questionable server ban, make an endless loop pipe that goes through the station and dumps a lot of radios with the mic turned on. Enjoy the mayhem.
Gloat roleplay?
@@ribunndraws "ez gg get fucked"
Remember, when spawning as a passenger, immediately run towards comms and steal the security and command keys
True, Lilten never said to not do this as self-antag. :godo:
OH NO! The forbidden lore.
i've never used intercoms because i could never figure out a use, so i never even knew how they worked
now i know, thank you very much!
This reminds me of when someone used chameleon tech to become an anomaly generator, then sat by the science intercom saying "An anomaly has been generated!" over science radio, looking exactly like the automated message you get when you generate an anomaly
I'm sure no one was fooled after the like 5th time, but I like to think someone was seriously concerned about some idiot making way too many anomalies
One thing to note is some radio frequencies are high power like handheld radios and the syndicate frequency.
This allows you to send and receive from anywhere without a server, to include communicating with people on expeditions from the station.
Handheld radios are quite useful, if you're salvage and going off on your own take a radio and give one to the quarter master or the cargo front desk so you can conveniently talk to them and call for help even while crit using last words. Besides they fit conveniently in your belt, why not take one.
Binary too
the average player will also probably never encounter this outside of binary, but these “high power” channels also work across maps (so if you’re talking on CentComm with an artifact, they may very well be listening)
new liltenhead videos just dropped, time for clowny to have command radio 3 minutes in
A fun bit i did once was building an intercom on a table in the stations library and using that as the base for a podcast.
The stations reporters were not very happy with me
Some stations in robotics, if it has a surgery room, there is maybe a headset with both sci and med channels, cool headset to find.
Salv can also find those! Love getting channel access to things i shouldn't as salv
I never knew you could remove the keys from headsets lol. Like, I always thought you could but never figured it out on my own so just thought it wasn't possible. Glad to know how to do that now, thanks.
Salvage tip: you can bring a telecoms server with you on expeds for easy comms, even works mid FTL for some reason. Some Stations even have a telecoms satellite with a bunch of intercoms that salv can hit, and they all have master keys. SO GO SPY ON COMMAND AND SEC.
Heres a tip for speaking into handheld radios (probably works for intercoms too but never tried):
If you have a working handheld radio, you can whisper (with the , key) and it will still broadcast the message but other people near you wont hear it (unless standing next to you), so you can talk without those people thinking youre talking to em.
You also dont need to be holding working radios to speak into them, it will work fine a tile away (maybe 2, but it will be muffled on the radio based on your distance from them, like when you hear someone whispering)
If you're Keld and you're an admin ghost it's very common to forget what channel you're in and OOC during a live round.
@@KeldNeedsCoffee Don't worry keld, I can make an ooc explained video for you :p
I always used to get arrested by sec for using the intercom. I'm glad it's more clear now when they are being used to stop this confusion
Fun fact there one wreck in space that allow you to get station master key. So yeah salv rule
You can steel encryption keys out of intercomms! Dang.
I wish handicomms were a thing on wizden/delta.
the lack of being able to turn the mic off is such a killer, it makes handhelds so annoying to use and not clog the channel, yknow?
What about to say something about EMP??? Emp works on radio BUT a few seconds.... I was playing goob and tried to kill secoff with emp and sword. Result: after EMP he stopped resisting and stand calling a help. And IT worked so the whole sec dep come for me with guns. Best feature they added lol
Liten, i wanna ask how you record your rounds played, do you use replay or just record the round or each part individually?
I record full rounds, I sometimes do post commentary and sometimes include replays in the rounds i played if something really interesting or confusing happens.
Do the Headsets always receive intercoms/security handhelds even when comms are down? I think that's how it used to work in SS13 but I wasn't yet able to test it in 14.
Yes, that's how it works
Yo @Liltenhead plssssss do a tutorial for the heretic antag, it’s been out for a couple months and no one has made a tutorial for it. It’s on impstation and goobstation server.
@@Thatonenightlord40k I don't play on those servers so I don't know how they work
Personally I unbound tab switching talking mode, because I use it to walk
thats fair honestly
@@Liltenhead it was too frustrating when i was trying to run and inspect something at the same time
Same
i find free headset i take encrypion key
its their fault someone flushed it into disposal
