    What I like how HxH villains are still depicted as bad people for all the bad stuff that happens to them. Most shounens have their villains are depicted in a positive light after their backstory is revealed or have their personalities change but HxH still have their villains depicted as bad people while still feeling sympathetic.

    Best part about Hunter X Hunter? Take a pick:
    A. Little to no filler
    B. Memorable characters
    C. Kickass soundtrack
    D. Humanized characters with personality
    E. Hisoka
    F. Great animation
    G. Originality
    H. The creative use of Aura
    I. All of the above
    J. All of the above + Other
    K. Other
    Select all that apply. If "Other", please specify.

    Was I basically the only person who didn't mind the same intro for 148 episodes? It almost always bothers me when a show changes their opening theme (the music specifically, not the animation). Hunter x Hunter's opening song has that feeling of setting out on a great adventure, and it always got me hyped to watch the next episode. It was one of the few OPs at the time that I didn't skip.

      Idk, in hxh stuff just... Happens. Like, sometimes in life a woman has cleavage, whoop-de-doo. Sometimes you run into someone who's naked-- you can take the Hisoka scenes as fan service but it's also just him being Extra and walking around naked, as you do. Basically, things just happen. You can take them as fan service if you want but it isn't shoved in your face like other series.

    Togashi said he created Gon because the Kid Goku type character was selling well and beating Yuyu Hakusho. Then he got bored of his own creation a few chapters in and thought the idea of this overly perfect child was almost scary, which leads to him being so determined that he's willing to die in order to not surrender against Hanzo who was extremely polite and said he'd win the next round. The perfect child with a bunch of determination didn't overcome an obstacle, he was just so stubborn that a man didn't want to cut off his limbs. I like that he tried to follow industry knowledge and found it boring because someone had already done it, but he had already started with it so he ended up making something that tackles cliches head on instead of just being a good show in a different genre. He could've made a spy thriller, it probably would've been great considering the current Succession war arc, but it probably wouldn't have been as legendary as HxH has become.

  • @stevepenn2582

    Fanservice only sucks when its used in non-sexual contexts. To use the example of jumpscares, in a well rounded horror plot a jump scare can be amazingly impactful and is totally not cheap, but thats because its where it's supposed to be. When fanservice is introduced into a scene or plot where sexuality is unnecessary, unneeded, or not intended its bad.

    • @Mars_over_seer

    • @cthulhu8976
      @cthulhu8976 7 років тому +28

      I don't quite agree. In the Monogatari Series there's *a lot* of fan service, some of it in non-sexual contexts, and I didn't mind while watching it (and trust me I hate fanservice) because there's always a conversation happening on top of that. My issue with fanservice in general is that while it's on screen, nothing else noteworthy is happening, so I feel like I'm wasting my time. Also, it's making the whole thing extremely awkward to watch in public.

    I've realized the humanization talked about is like 90% of why I'm inordinately attached to the 1999 version? Like. There's this scene after they get Killua back from his family's house where Killua, Gon, Leorio and Kurapika are all using the same bedroom on this train, and Killua and Gon's bed is right up against a window, so they duck under the curtain to look at the scenery and whisper to each other as Leorio and Kurapika sleep, and it's just ??? happy?? and then when they go to visit Mito, the JoyStation is air dropped to them (which makes so much sense with how small that island is supposed to be) and Gon catches the parachute and does this little dance. And this might have happened in other versions but Mito sits Killua down to cut his hair and it's just really wholesome. The 1999 version took more liberties, which would be a bad thing cause the original manga is so good, but I think for a few of the changes they were just feeling what the manga made them feel and adding moments of their own lives that made them feel that same way. Does that make sense?

      The og HxH was better with characterization, but its pacing suffered from some poor choices. I prefer the og hxh for the way Gon and Killua bonded and the way it opened the anime. I reeeeaaally hate the 2011 first episode and the lack of backstory with kaito

      i feel you, one scene that really stuck to me in the 1999 anime was that before kurapika went to fight uvo, he prayed in his native language for strength and guidance. And he did so again after he killed him. It just speaks to me how he slowly transforms from someone embodying the kurta culture and keeping his lineage close to someone not even wearing kurta clothes when he switches to a suit, like he's slowly losing himself to revenge

    what makes anime (or manga by it's original source) great is :
    1. little to no filler
    2. extremely small amount of fanservice, even if it's exist, it's only placed on obvious setting (eg: complimentary beach episode)
    3. adds humor, no matter how serious the story is. *especially* if the story has serious tone
    4. JoJo references

    6:12 I don't really agree with the use of One Piece for this example. One of the things I enjoy about it is that Oda manages to get outlandish looking and behaving characters taken seriously. For example I'm sure many readers never expected they would care about a flamboyant, dancing okama in a ridiculous swan costume, let alone think moments with that character were emotional or intense. They didn't expect the character to have respectable ideals or do commendable things.
    As I see it, a big theme of One Piece is that regardless of the form a person takes, they're still people you can come to understand, appreciate, or empathize with.

    I agree that I was impressed with Hunter X Hunter (and other series) for not having fan-service, but I was equally impressed with Kill la Kill for having fan-service that melded with the rest of the show, and at least for me didn't detract from my enjoyment of it (dare I say it even added to it?) Though KlK took a somewhat unique approach to fan-service, and it really only irks me when creators use it to dress up bad shows, the fan-service interrupts the plot, or requires the characters to act out of character.

    • @seaweed5269

      Dunno, when I first tried to watch it I was scared off by the fanservice and came back only a couple years later because of all the praise the show got. I did enjoy it a lot in the end, but wouldn't have spent the time if not for the firm belief that it was good.

    • @KingdomOfDimensions
      @KingdomOfDimensions 7 років тому +10

      I can understand that. For anyone who hasn't seen much or any anime KlK's fanservice could be a shock, and anyone who has seen much anime will be used to fanservice being used in the scenarios I mentioned, where it just comes off as a cheap distraction. There are a few scenes in KlK even I could do without, but I don't know if I could imagine the show without the vast majority of the fan-service.
      One claim in particular that I disagree with is that the kamui outfits aren't cool because they're unnecessarily revealing. I find those concepts orthogonal; the designs certainly seemed very cool to me. Also, as with the rest of the fanservice in the show I see no need to defend it. One either likes KlK's fanservice, tolerates it, or simply doesn't watch. I am glad you fell into at least the middle group, it is a great show.

    I think especially in the Manga you can see how Togashi starts with a pretty small world (Whale Island) and then broadens the horizon of that world little by little. First we get the exam which is kind of like an introduction into that bigger world and also into other peoples (kirua, curapika, leorio) worlds. it just keeps on going like this with greed island and the chimera ant arc and now we're going to the lost continent. ;)
    I think this way Togashi manages to create the feeling that later on in the story, things fall into place. It's almost like he had the whole thing worked out from the beginning, although this isn't the case. He once said that the focal point of HxH are the characters and as long as they don't drive the story due to their character traits, no narrative will take place. World-building in HxH might not be as concise as it is in other works because Togashi focuses more on the individual characters but that's exactly what gives HxH it's realism in a fantasy world imo.
    Concerning Fanservice: what about the scene where Leorio and Curapika have to share a bed on the airship? :p

      Yeah, saying that Nen comes from stands with such certainty sounds like a stretch, but the two do share some characteristics that make them stand out (pun unintended) from other shonen power systems:
      -creative and very, very unique abilities
      -every character has their own, personal power, and it often matches their personalities and traits
      -are not based on power levels, so characters can defeat more powerful opponents using strategy and wit without it looking like an asspull (most of the time, of course. There are exceptions like DIO and Meruem)
      Also, there are JoJo references on HunterXHunter, so it's reasonable to think that Togashi liked and was inspired by it

The fights in Steel Ball Run focused more on the actual fighters instead of the stands but still have them use their abilities in strategical ways. The Wrecking Ball Arc even has both fighters knowledge on the Golden Rectangle instead of how they're going to win.

    I hate fanservice when it's unnecessary and/or out of place (I mean, I hate fanservice in general, but primarily in those circumstances). Like, if there's an emotional scene going on or an intense fight then all of a sudden there's a bunch of these girls flopping around their inhumanly shiny tits and underwear, I'm just going to stop watching. Keep the fanservice to the genre that it applies to (ecchi or harem animes), and you are going to use it outside of those genres, use it in a way that it's actually comedic and in good taste, otherwise it's just mindless bullshit to fill in for a lack of plot/content and increase merch sales. (We need more profit because we know the anime sales will be shit? Alright, let's boost up the fanservice. They'll be drooling over their figurines and body pillows of their favourite waifus in no time). It's kinda sad actually, now that I think about it.

    As a girl who's into anime, one of my main problems with fanservice is that it's kinda demeaning. It reduces a female character to a pair of boobs, and often makes me feel inadequate for not looking like a "sexy anime babe." I don't know much about design theory, but that's just what I know about myself, at least, if that helps explain some of the disdain for it.

    • @RuneKatashima

    • @cythera3240
      @cythera3240 6 років тому +36

      RuneKatashima that doesn't mean we can't have anime with a different target audience, and neither does it mean we can't talk about the cultural implications of what sells to male young adults/teens.

    • @cythera3240
      @cythera3240 6 років тому +10

    • @RuneKatashima
      @RuneKatashima 6 років тому +38

      You seem fairly biased and/or possibly naiive. There is anime with different target audiences, and some target females with similar fanservice, objectifying males. There's also plenty of anime that has no fanservice. They all target different audiences.
      So you see, you do have different anime that target's different audiences. Not all anime are the same.
      Your second comment has no merit so not gonna bother with it.

    • @cythera3240
      @cythera3240 6 років тому +21

      RuneKatashima There are other anime, but they don't get nearly as popular due to the intense proliferation and popularity of very sexualized and honestly creepy tendencies of shonen/seinen anime, and it doesn't help that the fanbase of a lot of anime is awful.
      So, again, it's nice to have a discussion about those tendencies and how they harm the genre as a whole, and it's good when an anime can break away from those tendencies.
      If you think there's no merit to the idea that quality often breaks tradition and attracts people outside of a strict demographic... Well... Okay? That seems to go against common sense, but it's subjective enough that I won't debate you on that point if you'd rather not.
      (Sorry for the rather disjointed nature of that first comment.)

  • @FFK7Shade
    @FFK7Shade 6 років тому +4

    It's funny when you take One Piece as an example of having characters with weird character design with no explanation.
    Because the world of One Piece is filled with bunch of islands with different evolutionary paths. Thus meaning radically different DNA's all over the place.
    Like you show us a picture of Moria who isn't even strictly normal human but belongs to a sub-race of humans who have horns and are larger than your average human.
    Like One Piece gets underestimated all the time, because of how absurdly subtle the storytelling is sometimes about its world building. Like there is absurd amounts of details that you pass by.
    Like Luffy's super-human metabolism. Like we all know he likes to eat a lot, but he isn't just eating for fun, he is legitimately hungry. His body has such an insane metabolism that he can literally heal stab wounds.
    Like there is this piece of dialogue that comes of as a joke between Lucci vs Luffy fight. Where Lucci talks about how he defeated Luffy by stabbing him in his Leopard form. Luffy simply answers "I was fine after I ate some meat".
    In the Prison arc, we get shown on screen how insane his metabolism really is. When his body is done fighting off the poison, he starts eating since he was pretty much just skin and bones at that point but the point is that we can see the energy he gets from the food to the travel into his body parts and completely restore him.
    Like nothing in One Piece universe really works just because "magic". The closest thing I can think that is Haki... But considering that Haki is largely an extension of already existing things...
    Let's talk about different kinds of beams that devil fruits can produce. There is the Slow Slow Beam, Love Love Beam, and Pika Pika Beam.
    Slow Slow Beam sends particles that causes objects to slow down for certain period of a time.
    Love Love Beam cause petrification to happen to people who are infatuated with the Love Love Dvil Fruit user however, it's shown that Love Love Beam is not even required as Sanji did this on his own when he looked at her... And he proceeded to do this again when he saw the mermaid princess, proving that petrification is an inherent attribute of the human body in that world.
    Pika Pika Beam has been replicated to be used by machines.

    I think there's this weird belief that all shounen is Dragon Ball. Honestly HunterxHunter isn't super different from other shounen, though if you look at shounen with anime adaptions over 100 episodes this does become a bit more valid. Just as an avid shounen manga reader a lot of things I see HunterxHunter praised for aren't all that uncommon. Not that HunterxHunter is bad, it's just not the uber-unique thing people paint it as.

    ......... Here's the only thing Shonen can learn from Hunter x Hunter.
    Never have a straight forward plot, that way you can do whatever the fuck you want and they'll eat it up. Oh the story is about a kid finding his father? No wait it's about becoming a secret society member who get massive funding to do whatever they want with the lack of a plot. Introduce 4 distinct characters, one who's a loveable kid, another who's a loveable kid with a tragic backstory that makes him badass, another intelligent kid who has a revenge mission, and a nobody comic relief who we can just ignore until I feel like making him important.
    Anyways where were we? Oh yeah Hunter exams, no wait, I got knocked out and we're now in the Zoldyk retrieval arc, time to go train our asses off to be able to stand a chance against a family of highly trained assassins..... or I can guess which hand a coin is in. Oh well who cares moving on TOURNAMENT ARCCCC and SHOUNEN POWERS!!!!!!!! Will Gon make it to the top? How will he face these masters of martial arts and Nen oh he 0 difficulties them all until we get to the fight we actually.
    Moving on Holy shit were in the big city, and there's underground black market trading going on and I must infiltrate to buy a game system I think my dad wants me to buy in order to find him possibly and REVENGE PLOT INTENSIFIES until it's not anymore. Yay we got the game now to play it.
    Woopie dragon quest land time for RPG like adventures!! Or dodgeball... yeah dodgeball, and a pop quiz on collectible cards :D
    Welp now that I finished the game time to get back to the main plot, finding my Dad..........s friend/student who has a kill fetish for insects, cue the most relevant groundbreaking tale told in the course of a 6 year hiatus about an Ant King who liked to play Japanese checkers with a blind girl thus questioning his Ant Humanity and a new revenge plot for our MC who wants to kill the Cat Ant that killed his Dads friend/Student who he knew for like 3 days tops.
    Cue infiltration of Ant castle and the highest salary for any narrator in history for the constant exposition.
    Oh Btw there's a giant Red beast man Ant and faggot butterfly Ant too.
    Fights, fights, running, fights, strategize, follows, finds, sits, waits, waits, waits, here's a fight that's going on while he waits. He's done waiting, come heal the man you decapitated with your bare hands, or face the consequences. Consequences faced.
    There's a Suicide bomber Buddha enthusiast, wrong religion Togashi. But the King lives only to not live later so he can spread his Nuke Ebola to the blind girl, way to go Netero. Gay butterfly dies alone not getting the Kings dick, and or MC is Hospitalized.
    Cue the strangest election process until the 2016 Us elections and OH SHIT!!!!! There's his dad!!!! Finally!!!! The plot thickens.
    Hey remember that family of assassins, turns out they have a plot device that can help Gon go back to normal with a grave consequence to whoever uses the plot device, unless you're relevant to the plot that doesn't exist. Turns out Killua is, and Gon is Ok, and he meets his dad, then goes home.....
    DARK CONTINENT ARC!!!!!!!!!!
    That about sum it up?

    I'd argue that the appeal of relatable characters is that they can give a story more emotional depth if the person watching has experienced something similar to what a character has because they immediately understand what the character is going through and can understand what emotions they are feeling beyond what the story outright states. How many people would have hated Shinj from Evangelion if they hadn't seen themselves in him?

    I didn't think the battle system was actually that good. Even though it had those 6 different categories or so, it still just seemed like "anything goes" and then the system was an afterthought after making up some super weird power then trying to somehow vaguely label it. There is also a category, the special category, that can just be literally anything, and Kurapica has the power to just have all the types of powers when his eyes are red, kinda stupidly op...

    Dude are you sure you want to use Code Geass when giving examples of shows that are great despite the fan service? Code Geass is kind of a contrived, messy anime.

    • @RuneKatashima
      @RuneKatashima 6 років тому +7

      Nothing about CG is contrived and the fact it's usually high on everyone's list and #30 on MAL severely weakens your argument.

      accidentally telling Euphemia to kill all the Japanese wasn't contrived... WAT.

      RuneKatashima What about Code Geass is not contrived? Does popularity always mean good?

    • @RuneKatashima
      @RuneKatashima 6 років тому +15

      Popularity is only an indicator that something is working. Which means there's a good chance something is good. You're going to have to give me a long list of examples of why it's contrived and why you think it is so I can have a discussion with you.
      Euphemia killing all the Japanese wasn't contrived and it was hinted earlier in the series Lelouch was going to lose control of his power at some point. Which, by definition, makes the scenario not contrived.

    • @Javetts
      @Javetts 6 років тому +2

      It was contrived. had that event not occurred, there'd be no moving forward for zero's plan. Euphemia helping to improve the Japanese living condition severely lowered demand for his revolution and any attempt to kill Euphemia at that point would cement him as no ally to the Japanese. While there were options to deal with her, all of them would prove Zero to be a truly evil person. At the very least he'd have to deny the betterment of millions of people's lives in order to get what he wants and at worst he'd actively choose to do something horrible to Euphemia knowing how good her goals and results would be.
      By that exact use of geass, he made the people hate her and had a reason to kill her *and* because it was an accident, his character accomplishes the goal without compromising the character morally...
      *It's not that his geass was activated by accident that I find contrived, indeed it was hinted at earlier through Mao that this can and would happen. However, for his geass's moment of awakening to be in front of Euphemia at their private 1 on 1 meeting and for him to say those exact words to her while the geass was active, was BS and completely contrived.*
      Don't get me wrong I love code geass, it had one of the few truly satisfying endings in anime and while I believe it has some problems (the high school crap) I find I recommend the show often, but this show has flaws and denying them seems unneeded.

      The rape/attempted rape scenes in Berserk are definitely drawn and staged in an eroticized manner, especially in the manga. While this doesn't personally bother me I'm actually glad it was toned down in the anime, since it makes the series hard to recommend to other people.

    How to make your audience suffer in just ten easy steps:
    1. Don't kill any of the characters your audience is attached to
    2. Wait for four story arcs
    3. Kill two minor side characters at the beginning of your next story arc
    4. Kill a major character
    5. Have this be the basis for your main character's growth from here out
    6. Turn said major character into a zombie
    7. Introduce zombie to your ten-year-old child protagonist
    8. Tease hope of recovery
    9. Dash hope of recovery
    10. Emotionally scar the ten-year-old child
