I'm trying to grow them in zone 9a. I lost 2 out of 5. Getting the watering right it the key. They don't like to sit in wet soil but they also don't like being in soil that's on the dry side. If you get the watering right then all you have to do is make sure they get good fertilization and you'll be good.

Bought two from Paul "Mr. Merliton" in Metairie - both died. Bought two from a feed store in Violet - both died. Bought a bunch from the fruit stand on St. Bernard Hwy for 70 cents a piece and just stuck them in the ground like Ruth Stout method. Five are thriving.

Fascinating video. I am grateful that you took the time and effort to sustain your family's mirliton variety.

The weather has very hot and dry in South La. My miriliton's in spite of watering every day have dry leaves. Should I cut them off.

@@geraldinedomingue4422 Are you planting in the ground or pot? If the leaves are yellow, the daily watering may be too much. Are you checking the soil to make sure it is dry? Also, you may want to consider putting a shade cloth to protect it from the rays of the sun. I hope this helps.

Interesting video .... very informative ... we are slightly inland from Durban South Africa, very hot summers and very mild winters ... we call them sou sou as in soo soo ....my grand mother grew them on her chicken run ... then my mom and dad grew them and now I grow them ... we have 6 or 7 varieties ... ranging from dark green to white/cream and all shades inbetween ...some smooth some rough ... with and without the thorns/spikes ....I would love to know which if any are heirloom .... we are plagued by vervet monkeys who like them more than bananas so I have to grow under 20% shadecloth ..... eating wise ... relish, soups, stews, curries, fried, battered, crumbed, baked, steamed, mashed. patties, apple/sou sou crumble, fried in butter with sugar and cinnamon etc etc

Thank you for those wonderful comments @tonymatthew9659! Interesting you have so many varieties growing and glad to see you are carrying on the family tradition. I thought squirrels attacking my vines were bad, I can’t imagine dealing with monkeys! Also thank you for the ideas on how you use them. I will have to share your story with our Facebook group mirliton.org. Please feel free to check us out there or on the website of the same name. I appreciate you watching and taking time to comment. As an aside, my wife actually spent about a year and a half growing up in South Africa back around 1974-6. I’ll have to ask her where she was exactly. Thank you again.

I have my grandmothers recipe book which includes her sou sou relish recipe if you want to add it to share with others ... I love the idea of them being a potato substitute for keto followers ... great business opportunity ... @@davidj.hubbell4231

Hey Nicole! Thank you for watching and reaching out. I would love to sell you some, but alas I have yet to produce any this year due to setbacks of this summers heat dome. Please check out this link to see if any growers will have any between late December to early April. www.mirliton.org/mirlitons-classifieds/mirlitons-classifieds/
      I hope this helps.

A link to the online store. Be careful buying at local plant stores unless they can verify they were locally grown. www.mirliton.org/2023/12/24/mirliton-seed-online-store/
