Maurice was an alcoholic for many years. He was accommodated by his brothers, but was unreliable for work. He denied his problem with alcohol but one day he pulled a gun on his wife and family and as far as his wife was concerned - she had enough. She took the kids and went to Barry's place where she was welcomed by the family and the brothers family. Maurice began a rehab programme after that because Yvonne had told him that she was not coming back until he made the decision to clean up. He did and from that time he became tetotal. He never looked back and from 1991 until he died he was drink free. This song could be an admission by him of his problem with drink and asking his family for forgiveness? So good to hear his clear, strong voice singing this with backup by his brothers.
Maurice is one man who became more handsome as time went on! Maurice was, indeed, the uniter between the brothers. Barry has stated in interviews that he and Robin competed their entire lives and Maurice was called “the glue” of the group.
Mo was always undervalued by critics and even by some fans but was basically their on and off stage musical director and wizard who played numerous instruments. He said people tried to break them up by saying to Barry you could go solo and not need your brothers and to Robin you could go solo and not need your brothers, but never said that to him. He also said the group was described as the good looking one, the one with the teeth and "the other one", meaning him. That had to hurt his self esteem! I often wondered if that partially contributed to his drinking problem. Proof of his value was The Bee Gees ended as a unit when he died. The peacemaker was gone. Many who knew them said he was the backbone of the group. Since you mentioned Lennon, The Beatles were impressed with the Gibbs, who were a lot younger, and the often acerbic Lennon said he "dug" them and gave a guitar to Mo for his 21st birthday. Mo was just a cool guy. Robin was later diagnosed with the same twisted bowel (the predisposition present since birth being twins although not identical) so when he experienced the same symptoms they knew what it was and rushed him to surgery or he would have died within days so Mo saved his brother's life. Both Barry and Robin's son Spencer said his dad was never the same after losing his twin and he never accepted it. Even when he was dying he said he wished Mo was with him.
Their psychic "bond" was lifelong! Remember the story of Rob being hit by a van, riding his bike in Australia when the twins were 12. Mo knew something happened and said he had bruises in the same places. Same with the Hither Green train derailment. He knew Rob was where something bad had happened, but also sensed he was "ok".
Lynn Redgrave did a very intimate interview with Maurice. He confessed and was very honest and told her all about his troubles and the ultimatum his wife gave him .. he even goes back and helped others in rehab.
It was like an apology to his family after getting out of rehab from alcoholism and also how he always felt the man in the middle between his brothers.
Just a fun fact. That black guitar was given to Maurice by John Lennon. This was a song baring his soul to his wife to forgive him. So he went to rehab and they renewed their vows. He was a very loving man.
It's true that Maurice was the man in the middle. I've heard him actually say in interviews that he felt like he was often the middleman between Barry and Robin because they were both so competitive with each other. Since his brothers passing Barry has said one of his biggest regrets that at the passing of each one of his brothers (including Andy) they were not in the best of places with each other. He has said that just before Robin's passing he saw a photo of Robin looking very, very sick and took it to his (Barry's) doctor and asked what he thought about where Robin's illness had progressed. The doctor told him if he had anything he wanted to say to Robin he'd better go now. Barry flew to England right away and was able to make amends. He says now he wishes they could have handled the competitiveness and stubbornness better.
The guitar Maurice is playing was a 21st birthday present from John Lennon. Can’t believe it’s coming up on 20 years (1/12) since he left us. Thanks for keeping his contributions to the Bee Gees musical legacy alive.
He’s trying to make amends to Yvonne for the things he did when he was drunk and in his alcoholism. The Man in the Middle I think does refer to his standing with Robin and Barry and how it was for him. He almost lost Yvonne due to his drinking and finally got help through a detox place.
This is one of my favorites especially since Mo is singing lead!!! Mo is so underrated!!! Yes this is about being the man in the middle of his brothers and his family and his alcoholism. My other Maurice favorite is Closer than close!!!
This is snibbits of his life…he was the man in the middle of his brothers, especially when they were younger, he said he was always the peace maker ( like his mom). He had a drinking problem for decades…it got so bad at one time he pulled a gun on his wife In Miami. She took the kids and ran to Barry’s house. Barry and Robin told him to get it together or he was going to be out of the group and loose his wife and kids. They are all family men and that would have killed him. He went into rehab and got his act together. Robin said he wanted to plant his foot in his butt in a Larry King interview. They are all great guys and we’re always really nice to their fans. They did banter and joke around a lot, they were all really funny, especially Robin, he has a wicked sense of humor and the typical British sense of humor. Barry said Robin liked to shock people too with his humor. The twins used to make fun of Barry in interviews that he was boring…( actually, he didn’t do the party, clubbing thing and said he would rather spend time with his family, to him it was everything.
Individually they all have different but fantastic voices but together their harmonies are above any other. Mo was the peacemaker between his brothers. Both Barry and Robin had very strong personalities and as Barry said he had a hard time being the older brother wanting to take control. As they were all adults with their own ideas they sometimes butted heads, especially Barry and Robin with Mo always the peacemaker. I not only love to see their music videos but their interviews and funny videos because you can see what humble, just all around great human beings they were, not to mention funny. They just had a great sense of humor. Thank you for great Bee Gees reactions.
As a big fan of the BGs I've listened to many of their interviews and I'm most impressed with their sense of humor and their down-to-earth demeanor. They were humble and generous which are admirable traits. It was always obvious that they had great love for each other.
The idea of Maurice as the ‘man in the middle’ of the Bee Gees helped popularize the song by that title, but it is actually about a man letting people down and telling lies. Lyrically it is the follow-up to ‘The Bridge’, written by Maurice and both his children about their reconciliation after Maurice took control of his alcoholism.
Such a sad song. It sounds upbeat, but it is really sad. "nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide" "looking for someone to show me the light". Sounds as though he's talking about his behaviour with his family when he had problems with alcohol. Always like your reactions Tex. Keep them coming.
I agree. Before the song starts, Barry says that Mo stood naked in front of the mirror when he wrote this song. Metaphorically he did. He laid himself bare in this song - the fact that he can't go anywhere to escape the temptation to drink again and that he's ultimately the only one who can make the choice to stay sober in each moment. That's a heavy burden to carry. He atones to his family. He Carrie's the shame and guilt of his prior actions and can't find a way to let them know the depth of his regret at how he behaved and the effect on his wife and kids. "I know I let you down in so many ways and sorry doesn't do what you need me to say, but I would die for you." He left nothing on the table. It's a wonderful song.
Love this, Maurice had a great voice. This song is about his life he was an alcoholic and finally beat it. Great smile! This is from an A&E Live by request concert. This was a wonderful concert check it out sometime. Even Billy Joel called in a request.
After Maurice died Barry and Robin performed here and there over the next decade and in 2009 they were working on new music but then Robin died in 2012 of cancer so it never happened and today Barry does solo music . Since all his brothers passed Barry has released 2 solo albums In the now , 2016 Greenfields Vol 1 , 2022 He has 5 solo albums in total . He is currently working on new music , a memoir and a movie bio pic of the Bee gees with Steven Spielberg

That's true about settling the fights between Robin and Barry. Maurice was an alcoholic and if you listen to the lyrics he says how sorry he is and falling off track. He hid himself in the bottle. Google his interview with Lynn Redgrave. It's about his addiction to alcohol. The interview was from the early 90s.
Many people think he's singing about being in the middle between Barry and Robin's disagreements, but I agree with you. This song is much deeper and personal about Maurice's struggle with alcohol and what his family went through with him. That interview with Lynn Redgrave was so open and honest. Yvonne's strength and love for Maurice helped save him.
Definitely refers to him being the 'referee' between his brothers and also directed to his wife and family during his alcoholic years before he got sober. Great song! I love your channel and reactions and especially your appreciation for the Bee Gees!
I love this song! Great you’re highlighting Mourice. He’s referencing his battle with alcoholism, his denial, lies, his faithful wife who stayed with him through controlling the addiction to become clean. Amazing artist and group, so underrated by critics for years, but their overwhelming body of hits after hit had critics and music media eating crow in the end! Good for the brothers Gibb!!!
I feel like they knew everything there was to know about each other, being so close all through childhood, and were so respectful of each other .. the banter between them in interviews, shows that .. I like how they shared themselves openly with their listeners, although, Maurice is a little more reserved I've noticed .. so I'm glad to see him get to shine .. Barry said, in one of his interviews, that he misses his brothers harmonizing with him 😟
Maurice's place in life was always man in the middle between twin Robin and Barry and his battle with alcoholism. By this time he was about eight years into his sobriety and still attending AA and fully aware of how close he came to losing his family who he loved so much. "And you forgive me but my heart still burns" and "I know that sorry doesn't doesn't tell you what you need me to say but I would die for you" speaks volumes. Happy New Year Texas!
The entire show that this clip is from is phenomenal. For the music, the humor, and the friendly bantering. It was on A & E's Live by Request hosted by Mark McEwan. I have the dvd of this particular Bee Gees episode. I never get tired of watching it.
Yes, their sense of humour too! If you want to react to interviews and other shows to see it, react to Gotcha, MTV Wall of Death , Pebble Lane a UK TV show, their appearances on Oprah, Arsenio Hall, Jay Leno, Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas Show. Also Larry King, where Mo talked about his battles with alcoholism.
Maurice ERnest Gibb C.B.E. was the musical WIZARD of the brothers. He could play any instument he was handed, and was the musical diretor of the Bee Gees Band for many years . Mo LOVED to create a MOOD with his tunes. A BRILLIANT example of this is the INSTUMENTAL song Journey To The Misty Mountains from his unreleased solo album called THE LONER. It is well worth listening to this tune, to understand was Mo was all about musically. ua-cam.com/video/ksVmRhPZUWM/v-deo.html ❤ ❤ ❤ LOVE, HUGS, PEACE, GOD BLESS & STAY SAFE ❤ ❤ ❤
Maurice was writing about his experience as an alcoholic; something that happened between him his wife and daughter finally shocked him into going into the Betty Ford centre where he had to face himself and his mistakes and heal the rift with his family. Which he did. I think this is what it is about. He made an interview called 'Fighting back' it s on youtube.
I love Mo. He was quiet, but was also a people person, trying always to be personable and chatty. One could see he was complex. And he seemed stuck between "two Alpha-type males in Barry and Robin" (someone in a documentary made that comment, and it stuck with me). However, after 1992-3 having undergone a successful AA program in Miami, I noticed he showed more confidence and spoke up during interviews more, holding his own. Lovely soul, as his brothers also-- Maurice said they had the same love for each other and shared a kind of telepathy during their song-writing sessions. He said they became "as one." These guys can evoke such emotion and make me teary-eyed with affection. They were indeed special people.
Andy was so much younger that he was never really a part of The Bee Gees. In the live concert video of You Should Be Dancing, you see him there. There was talk that they were going to make him a member but then he passed. They could never really go on without Mo.
Please watch a cute video of Billy Joel making an online request for the Bee Gees, just type in Billy Joel requesting song of bee gees, you'll love it. Also another song of Maurice is Wildflower, just beautiful
To check out leads of Mo is always a good idea! Also a good idea, if you'd find lil time, check out a song called 'On Time', double feature first Maurice and second Stephen Gibb, eldest son of Barry. Maybe it is like lookin' into a mirror forya. Surprise, surprise! Both to find on YT, Stephen sang it on his dad's 'Mythology Tour' in 2013/2014.
@@Texas_Love you should look at a song that Stephen and his cousins did called "Please Don't Turn Out the Lights." It was a Bee Gees song, so the children covered it. It is so good. Their harmonies are gorgeous and they sound so much like their dads. Even Andy's daughter is one of the singers.
The interview I told you about with Michael Parkinson log ago that you see all of them is such so much history and information. They talk about everything and even sing songs
Maurice had to step back from the band for a few years because of his struggle with alcohol. He went into rehab but was able to get back into his fine form. His brothers did not record during that time, waiting for Maurice to re join the band.
Love your reactions! You need to find the interview he did with Lynn Redgrave, it was shot at his home in Miami, after he renewed his wedding vows with his wife. The song makes perfect sense after that. Hope this answers some of your questions. 😊
Hi! Just another suggestion for Maurice ... 1995 concert .. "Closer Than Close" ... thanks, have a great day! Also when you're ready for more Robin please do 1974 Australia concert "Mr. Natural" .. thanks!
Mo was a clever musician played bass guitat, guitar and piano. Responsible for many arrangements Beautiful voice deeper but able to sing in a higher register. I am sure he was shyer but on stage played his part.
Mo was an alcoholic and his wife took the kids and moved in with Barry and his family until he went and got help. But yes, he was also the one in the middle whenever there were differences between Robin and Barry. So, he also felt guilty about not being able to get Andy to get clean off drugs before he damaged his heart, which is what eventually killed him at 30. They talk about this album and making it on a utube special.

@@KA-od5mw Agreed. I also really like "On Time" and Stephen Gib did a version that is INTENSE (although i think I do prefer Mo's version) it's still worth a listen, especially for the more rock oriented fans.
This track is sort of autobiographical and kind of an apology to his wife Yvonne after his brush with alcoholism....he was also the peacemaker of the group and a buffer between Barry and Robin.....12 Jan 2023 will be the 20th anniversary of Maurice's passing......it's really so hard to imagine....seems like just the other day they were laughing and joking around.....
I'm weary from battle but I've just begun to fight....it's about addiction. It's an apology to his wife and family after he went to rehab and worked the program..
Yes, Maurice once said in an interview he nearly got tired of the two's bickerings during their teenage years that resulted in Robins split up withem in early70:s and again in conflicts again with Barry in the early 80's he just turned into bottles!!!
I don't know that this song is meant for this but Maurice had a definate problem with alcohol and the words seem to fit with his position while he was in the process of fighting that demon along with the responsibilities he had pulling at him, including working with his brothers, taking care of his family, etc. Along with fighting the adverse effects of Alcohol. I personally think that this was what the song was written to address.
Here is a link to an interview Maurice did about his alcoholism and hitting rock bottom with his wife, and family, and then being fired from Bee Gees by his brother Barry This will help you to see the song was written mostly his wife, but yet for all of them... "Maurice Gibb - Fighting Back" ua-cam.com/video/PdX7R1F4yPk/v-deo.html

Yes his mother said he was always caught in the middle of Robin and Barry not getting along
Mo and Barry spoke on an interview that's how I know the back story of the song
Mo was always undervalued by critics and even by some fans but was basically their on and off stage musical director and wizard who played numerous instruments. Love hearing Maurice sing House of Shame!
House of Shame is another great Mo lead. Melbourne concert 1989 version
Mo was the visionary man the latest time. A little bit rocker and instrumentist added the new sound to the band!! Really an idol.!
The guitar Maurice is playing was a 21st birthday present from John Lennon. Can’t believe it’s coming up on 20 years (1/12) since he left us. Thanks for keeping his contributions to the Bee Gees musical legacy alive.
Thank you for that bit of trivia on the guitar! Not his usual!
I recommend "Wish You Were Here" by the Bee Gees they made it after their youngest brother Andy died.
Love love love this song and love Mo'S voice
Alan Kendall, guitarist, said Mo was the glue that held them together
He’s trying to make amends to Yvonne for the things he did when he was drunk and in his alcoholism. The Man in the Middle I think does refer to his standing with Robin and Barry and how it was for him. He almost lost Yvonne due to his drinking and finally got help through a detox place.

Great song, Maurice was great!!!

Mo went to AA meetings the rest of his life. He'd been sober for years til Andy's death and he relapsed.

Have you seen an interview with all of them it is a must see especially talking about the loss of there youngest brother Andy
If you have ever messed up in your life these lyrics strike right to the heart.
Andy was never a member but was to have become just before he died.
Its about his alcoholism and this is to his wife. He did recover thank God
Your starting the new years wright with the Bee Gees great reaction
Thanks
Thank you, John!
Yes this is about himself. His battle with alcoholism. He backed someone he didn't know. He fought hard
Maurice was the peace keeper, between the brothers.
Great song. Love it. Way to go Mo!!!!
It means what ever you want it to mean, and THAT is good songwriting.
Mo has the the largest vocal range singing both high and low harmonies.E was alsobrilliant in the studio
You act like you know him personally geez
@Lora-qw2rz I wish ...from watching interviews
He went solo and made a country album
Hadn't heard this one . Thanks Tex. So rare to hear Maurice sing. 👍
Please watch a cute video of Billy Joel making an online request for the Bee Gees, just type in Billy Joel requesting song of bee gees, you'll love it. Also another song of Maurice is Wildflower, just beautiful
Ps There's Funny Moments of the Bee Gees parts 1 2 and 3. They were the best!
Those are hilarious. The Best of Bee Gees humour!
Maurice was the peacemaker.
This is about him. His life through his battle through alcohol it's directed towards his wife
And written by Mo & Barry.👍
You should react yo another song from that concert... " She keeps on coming"
Yeah about his battle with alcohol.
Also about his place between his brothers keeping the peace
Nb they never performed after his death
The song was about his alcoholic time and when he got sober
Hey Tex, good to see you back with more BGs. I still think you look and even sound like Barry's oldest son Stephen.
I thought that, too!!
Yes he certainly does!
I just looked him up in a video with him playing 🎸 and we do look alike!🤣 That's crazy!
@@Texas_Love We've been mentioning you have a double out there....the son of a Bee Gee!😂
Yep even Barry said so at an interview post Mos death
Barry said itself Maurice was the peace maker between Barry and Robyn
The interview I told you about with Michael Parkinson log ago that you see all of them is such so much history and information. They talk about everything and even sing songs
Maurice had to step back from the band for a few years because of his struggle with alcohol. He went into rehab but was able to get back into his fine form. His brothers did not record during that time, waiting for Maurice to re join the band.
It’s so sad Maurice passed 2 yrs later RIP
Closer than Close is another Mo song.
Love your reactions! You need to find the interview he did with Lynn Redgrave, it was shot at his home in Miami, after he renewed his wedding vows with his wife. The song makes perfect sense after that. Hope this answers some of your questions. 😊
Bravo!👋👋👋Bravo!👋👋👋🇧🇷 essa música é muito top! Amoooooo!!❤❤❤👍
Hi! Just another suggestion for Maurice ... 1995 concert ..
"Closer Than Close" ... thanks, have a great day! Also when you're ready for more Robin please do 1974 Australia concert "Mr. Natural" .. thanks!
please check out Above and Beyond, another amazing Mo lead! it’s my favourite of his! fantastic song and video, thanks!
💕💕💕
Next......"Closer than Close"!!!!
bee gees lonely violin

Love Omega Man. It could be a hit today
@@LizzieRD - "Hold her in your hand" and "Above and Beyond" are great too..
"Lay it on Me," one of the best, most overlooked songs!!! Glad to hear from someone else who loves it!
@@KA-od5mw Agreed. I also really like "On Time" and Stephen Gib did a version that is INTENSE (although i think I do prefer Mo's version) it's still worth a listen, especially for the more rock oriented fans.
@@willow_wise I'll give it a listen, thanks! Somedays I'm in the mood for a bit more rock, & Stephen's voice is great!
Mo
Have a good voice but is
sad
That he has passageway love all brothers have agreat
voice
He said in an interview that it’s just about life
Yes the whole of his life. This song is extremely deep. As was Maurice.
🤛👊🤜
Check out Lisa Fischer - How Can I Ease The Pain ( live in Japan) and Luther Vandross - House Is Not A Home (live at the 1991 NAACP Awards)
Also watch The Ozone , Bee Gees Play Crazy Golf
I don't know that this song is meant for this but Maurice had a definate problem with alcohol and the words seem to fit with his position while he was in the process of fighting that demon along with the responsibilities he had pulling at him, including working with his brothers, taking care of his family, etc. Along with fighting the adverse effects of Alcohol. I personally think that this was what the song was written to address.
He was in one appearance with the brothers, you should be dancing
Such a sad song..
You should see, Noel's gotcha with The bee gees no singing but love their sense of humour
Its also about mauris drinking problem he had
