So basically it's a story from Taylor's perspective. Her friends Este's husband cheats on her and when she confronts him, he kills her to be with his mistress. so Taylor kills the husband and frames the mistress.

It wasn't the mistress who murdered him. Este's husband killed her, so Taylor killed him to get revenge for her friend (that's why she says it's a good thing that the mistress took out a big life insurance policy, so they'd think she did it and no one would suspect that Taylor was the murderer).

just a fun fact: Este is one of the Haim sisters (there are three). Obviously it is fiction and she just used her name, but there's that :) And that's why when Taylor says "her sister is gonna swear she was with me" Danielle (another Haim sister) says "she was with me, dude".

Este is Taylor's friend she thinks her husband is cheating on her she calls him out and he kills her and report her missing thats the first part of the song then taylor gotta get revenge for her friend so she kills the man and put the blame on this mistress because of the life insurance policy . I thought at first it was about different perspective the first one from taylor as estes friend the second from este and the last one from the mistress but its not cuz when she says estes sister gonna swear she was with me . Fun fact: Este is one of the (three) HAIM (pronounced hahy-ihm) sisters and she co-wrote the song, also the restaurant named in the song is actually Este's favorite and in the song when Taylor sings "Good thing Este's sister gonna swear she was with me" and someone says "she was with me dude" that is Danielle (Haim main vocalist), Este's sister in real life hehe.
I love how Taylor stammers on the last lines "I wasn't letting up until the day he, I wasn't letting up until the day he" represents how the murder if the man is still a secret, and she won't reval he died bc there's no evidence she killed him. And by the last when she whispers the died, bc no one can proved it she killed him or the man died, so it'll all be a mystery, a whisper in the wind.

Taylor Swift best friend told her that her husband was cheating, then she went missing. So Taylor believed he killed her(Este). The husband mistress moved into the house after Este death then Taylor killed the husband for killing her friend Este. The mistress thinks Taylor killed the husband but she can’t prove it. So the husband kills his wife then Taylor killed the husband. So the mistress looks like the killer in the end.
This is the perspective of Este's friend- Este is saying she knows her husband cheated but can't prove it. Then Este goes missing and Taylor (the friend) says I know he killed her but I can't prove it. Then she references the boat because she can dump his body, her friend is going to give her an alibi, and the mistress took out life insurance which gives the mistress an incentive to kill him. So the mistress is the perfect one to blame for his death. Basically, the friend of Este is getting revenge for killing her.

My favorite song off the album.. her storytelling is everything ! Add in the folk/country sound and I’m sold.. Taylor is too good. Haim is one of my favs too..I would recommend checking out their music. The woman power in this song 💪🏼 you can always count on Taylor to deliver us some lyrical masterpieces along with the best collaboration!

If the cheating husband took out the policy his wife would benefit or maybe relatives not not the mistress. Only if Este had life insurance would husband benefit.
