hey, would making a website for my school be a big add to my resume? im thinking of centering it around volunteering opportunties in the area @RishabJainK
I would personally take this list with a grain of salt. Any EC can at the very least turn into a very good college essay. Do what ECs you enjoy and are actually good at and also consider how strong your school is in that EC. my hs doesn't even have a science fair, while our student government is very involved and teaches a lot.
Honestly some of these reasons kinda dumb. College level courses at a local community college are free. If I went back in time, I would of taken less APs and more dual enrollment at a cc. Save money and time, most courses transfer over lol. Like you can still spend summers doing internships/research and whatnot.
yes yes yes! for example, i agree that NHS is very basic on its own. But if you lead cool initiatives in it (such as volunteering, fundraisers, tutoring, etc), it can sound great on an application to a top college.
Nearly any EC can be great as long as you're invested in it and if it provides you with a transformative experience. I joined a small local activist group and that ballooned into working on a campaign with the ACLU. Your ECs will go as far as you are willing to take them.
Not sure how accurate the Model UN bashing is here. I talked to some admissions officers at UChicago, and they said they like to see model un on an application, and 13% of Harvard students participated in the club
model un is a pretty base club, thereby many students take it; this could explain the high amounts of students taking it and being accepted (i do not think it is one of the sole/major reasons kids get in)
I am quite disappointed that they put Model United Nations in the lowest category, I mean, you can practice public speaking, debating, and writing skills, meet new people, thus showcase those skills through 'Best Delegate', 'Outstanding Delegate' awards. I've gone to countless MUNs as a staff, a delegate, or a chair, and I think one of my highlights of hs was muns.
True. MUN is amazing. It isn't a club like they mentioned. It requires a lot of effort, critical thinking and confidence as well. Even most universities mention it as a good extracurricular.
at my school, i help to run our annual mun which also includes leading a group of people to create an event. i still think that’s a valuable experience to have
@@aryamankukal1056 that's not true. You need to work really hard in an MUN and its a really good experience. Most colleges accept it as an extracurricular. One of the top extracurriculars in my brother's application was MUN and he got into a top 10 college.
I just wish I had this kind of knowledge going into high school but now it's too late to maximize what I could do with my time to build a competitive resume for college. Your videos are such an excellent resource for high schoolers who want to get into their dream school that I'm gonna be jealous of those underclassmen who watch you before applying to college lol. Keep preaching P Pratik
I disagree with the Model UN placing. Yes its not the best EC out there and yes many parts of it might feel formulaic(Speeches and resolutions in particular are all super formula based), but it really practices your public speaking skills, which can be useful in many fields. I don't think its the best simply because it doesn't really do anything better than something like a debate or mock trial club but it still practices some very vital skills.
Yeah, president of my Debate Club here who recently killed Model UN (literally we got 80% of the members from MUN to switch to Debate), I think both clubs are kinda ehh as far as admissions go. I think I learned way more from starting that than I did any of my other clubs (and I honestly probably wouldn't have even had the interview skills to get my internship without it), but I think for raw admissions it's definitely not the best
as much as this is a fun video, friendly reminder that this tier ranking is just that. they made it for fun & to provide some info. it's not meant to be the end all or be all of ecs and honestly i would say just do what you want. the more important thing is that you work hard & try to stand out at what you do!! and you're never going to want to do that if you don't love ur activities. so just do things that you feel truly passionate about & work as hard as you can trust that things will fall into place. doesn't mean that you can't be strategic about how you do things but make sure you're doing what you truly want
What about speech and debate team? I’m co captain for my team this year and I heard colleges love it because you gain a lot of public speaking skills from it.
could you make a video on how you decided that stem/med was the path for you? i personally feel conflicted because i know that i REALLY love anatomy/healthcare, but i can see myself doing other jobs at the same time. med would mean so much commitment, and i wanna be 100% sure before devoting myself down that path.
What about accelerating in math and taking college math courses like combinatorics and differential equations? I get what you are saying about taking random college classes, but what if you want to major in math or physics and you take some semesters of classes that align with your interests?
Tbh the opportunity cost is gonna be pretty low, so it's better than doing nothing (realistically taking an online diff eqs class is like a couple hours per week of your time and maybe a couple hundred dollars). I think the big thing is that you should never give up other opportunities that are potentially better for that---don't forgo an internship or something so you can take a college class---but it can't hurt you
its rly good to do and would help you stand out compared to your school if you've exhausted all the classes at your school, but don't make it one of your activities
These are bio majors... I mean ofc they will put science stuff on top and things they did like boy scouts over MUN. I do MUN myself and I would definitely say keep doing it lol you can ofc get awards and they are competitive at big conferences, also getting leadership positions and helping host conferences is a big deal too.
