Even though I just graduated high school and am off to college this fall, I found this super informative! I feel like I took the "well-rounded" path and didn't have much depth with my ECs. However, one strong, unique EC I had was competitive Rubik's cube solving, where I was able to create my own competitions and travel across North America for, which I was able to write my essays about. Keep up the great videos :)
I am only in my freshman year right now. Matter of fact, it hasn't even been a month. But from all of my older friends who were all tryhards, this is the one thing they were missing, which was a non-profit that actually does something. Make a non-profit that you actually care about because nobody can just feed off of the college admissions motivation for that long.
It was only through someone else’s comment that I noticed you only had over 6k subs. The video was THAT informative and professionally edited that I just assumed you’d been doing this for years and had over 100k subs at least .
omg how does he only have 5k subs? he talks so well and also the video editing is so good, the topic is amazing and the script too. i hope shinwoo can get known !
@@sh2nu1ee i shared your acc on my little blog, i hope people will see your videos soon. 🥹 students need that nowadays, and no bs in your videos, so saves time which is needed. i wish you a good night/day 🫶🏻
Thank you so much Shinwoo, your videos really help me get an idea for my future and give my helpful tips. Although I’m still pretty young, I think it’s good to learn about this stuff. Keep going you’re doing amazing. I can tell your hard work is paying off, thank you so much 🐐:)
Hello Shinwoo, I have a 3.97/4 UW GPA and a 5.85/6 Weighted GPA that puts me at 4/387 in my class. I'm going into my junior year and I haven't had too many extracurricular activites. In the summer of 9th grade I worked at a church funded organization for 5 weeks where I helped underprivileged kids learn life skills like art, technology, finance, etc. In 10th grade I spent a little time in Speech and Debate, but didn't make much of an impact. I'm probably going to be working in a biology lab at a local University doing research and hoping to eventually get published. I'm also going to apply to the math and science honors societies, as well as NHS. I'm considering rejoining Speech and Debate and maybe trying Model UN. I really want to get into a Harvard or MIT level school, and was hoping you could provide suggestions for extracurriculars? I was also wondering how big of an impact 1-2 years per activity would make in comparison to 3-4 years? Thank You!
Great question. Of course your stats are impressive and are good enough to be considered for top schools. But that's not what will push you past that bar of acceptance. There is quite a gap between someone who's been doing Model UN and speech and debate for years and achieved awards compared to someone who is starting out near the end of their high school career. But just because there is that gap, are you just not going to do it at all? Something is better than nothing, and it seems like you're proactive in the way you got that research position. Wishing you luck!
Research and even independent projects are already very unique. I don't have any experience in MUN, but honor societies can be great if they offer opportunities. Still, not to be corny or cringy, go for your interests!
Hi, I am a student in 8th grade and did algebra 1, and physical science last year and my grades were 3.3 and 3.5, I had no motivation. Can I still save myself and get into Yale?
do you have any advice for high school seniors? looking at what other people have done makes me feel like I’m not impressive enough and lack unique ecs
Alright, so quick question for some EC’s: •I occasionally do concept art for two game dev studios. Could this be counted as a unique EC, and if so, how? •also, would opening a 3D printing shop-maybe an Etsy or something-be a good EC?
Great steps and actions to get unique extracurriculars. The video inspires us and reminds us that extracurriculars cannot come out of nothing, and it takes dedication and time to make them "impressive." Awesome video, as always.
Currently, i am in grade 11(juinor right?). I wanna be a doctor and i wanna create a club about martial arts, cte and the relationship of working out and school performance
I am a senior this year with a 4.0 unweighted GPA. I actually don’t have any extracurricular except a brief stint (two weeks) of volunteering at a place for young children to develop life skills. I have my associates degree completed through my local university Early College program. Am I screwed in admissions for high level universities?
Hey Shinwoo, I am a senior currently and I was just wondering if you had any advice for seniors. Due to my family situation I could only do one EC in sophmore year and that was a Rock band club which i participated in at my old school, since I had to move to a school that was pretty far away I had no form of transportation so clubs or ECs were not available to me, as well as my family struggling with money. Currently I do have a way to go to these clubs/ECs but I don't even know if it's worth it anymore because of how late I am applying. I am not looking to go to a big school but I definitely want to go somewhere out of state and with good credibility since I am planning on majoring for finance. Thank you for the information it was very helpful!
hey! great advice tbh and smth that struck my mind while watching was maybe starting smth like a public library/ trinket exchange type of thing. It’s something ive been interested in for quite a while and though im not sure about how easy it will be to set it up in my country, do you think it’s a unique extra curricular?
Hello Shinwoo! I’m about to start 9th grade, but I had some extracurriculars in mind. I’m going to do art, debate, and decathlon throughout high school, but I’m also considering working at my local teen court and starting a nonprofit. Would a top 20 or Ivy League school consider these to be unique as I’m hoping to pursue law when I’m older.
Do not start a non profit they look very bad to aos unless it does something insane some ivy leagues even say non profits do not look good because it shows a lack of critical thinking skills
having extracurriculars that match with your whole application "theme" is always good. It shows experience, depth of knowledge, and genuine interest in whatever major you're choosing!
how can you come up with unique extracurricular activities if you don't know what to do with your life? how would it be possible to cater your activities to the field you're interested in?
I would say i am pretty good at art, however would not consider a field with art alone (aint being a broke artist) so i would just say do whatever. I volunteered at a hospital and my local museum! Just do whatever you like!
hello there, really enjoy your videos. i’m currently a freshman in high school, do you have any tips on what i should be focusing on / what i should be doing to up my chances for college?
Hi, Thanks for much information. I do not have an extracurricular background at all and I am already in 12th grade. Is it too late to start extracurriculars??
If I’m being honest, I would say yes. Do you have a good reason for not participating in anything? If so, you should mention that in your application. For example, I have three siblings that are 12 and under. Throughout my childhood, I’ve had to sacrifice so much of my time to help take care of them because our mom works full time. And because of that, I didn’t get to participate in many extracurricular activities. But if you can, you should still try to join something this year. Good luck.

I am in my first year of high school and currently do the Duke of Edinburgh bronze, science and math olympiads, mentoring club and student government. I might volunteer in a few years at hospitals and maybe write a research paper. I am also thinking of starting to work a part-time job. Would these extracurriculars be impactful on a college resume?
This sounds like something I would have loved to do, however, I'm in my jr year with simply too little time..😔 Wish I would have understood the importance of ECs sooner.

Hi Shinwoo, I'm currently a junior with absolutely no EC and I want to apply to top tier universities but I can't seem to find internships for my field of interest. What are some suggestions you can give me and how could I start a nonprofit or find research? I have absolutely no connections and I would love for any advice anyone could give me before my 2 year time period is over!
What are some relevant extracurriculars that I can develop (future physics major, doing the IB curriculum)? Ofc I have other projects going on but I am just curious.
want to go into psychology (forensic psychology specifically ) . I have no idea what kind of ECs i could do that relate to that field . Does anyone have Suggestions ?
Hi Shinwoo, I was wondering if you had any advice that could boost my application. I am a rising junior with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, extracurriculars: volunteer tutoring, CSF, NSHSS, singing, chambers choir, I helped my singing teacher with a a dew summer camps, I worked at the Exploratorium for a year, starting a blog this year, starting an astrophysics club at my school this year. I am also cold emailing right now to try and get an internship/research position. I want to go into astrophysics but I feel like my application isn't very unique or impressive, especially if the cold emailing doesn't amount to anything. Do you have any advice?
Freshman here, my high school has this program that will allow me to become an RN by the time I graduate (I want to become a neurosurgeon so I feel like this is a good thing for me). Is this something that would stand out on an application?
A student can be good at test taking yet lack other important skills that good colleges look for (like communication, teamwork, networking skills). They also just want to see the things you’re passionate about and doing such extracurricular activities shows that you’re willing to go above and beyond to pursue your interests
You mentioned the fact that cold-emailing would be futile without first obtaining the skills required to excel at possible internships. How would you propose to go about learning these skills?
I’m planning to minor in art and major in biology, but I don’t have many resources near me for doing something biology related (plus my parents won’t drive me). Do you think making a virtual art gallery for young artists around my area would work? I want to do that I just don’t know how to go about it. Also, is it okay that I’m starting this at the beginning of my junior year, or is it too late?
omg!! I’m also thinking about majoring in bio and I’m a rising junior… I just realized i actually have to get involved in stuff lol. I think the idea of a virtual library sounds super cool and unique. Hope it all goes well :)
I would love to apply for business/econ/finance major next fall semester which is 2026 Ik having ecs related to these major also know as supercurriculars is really good But can having like a internship in social media managing and content creation also help me boost my ecs for these majors for top 20 schools and Ivies Also could you make specific video on ecs amd awards for business or econ or finance major
can't lie to you those EC's cant compete with USAPhO qualifiers and others who commonly get into ivy league and t20 schools. however if it's for a huge social media channel for like a big company for example, or do content creation to a huge audience, that would increase the impact of the ec for sure.
Hey, I'm an INDIAN STUDENT, Currently in high school (11th grade). I have a LOR from IIT DELHI. I was a part of INDIA'S LARGEST TECHFEST CAMPUS AMBASSADOR. The Lor is signed by their professors. Will that help me??

Hi Shinwoo, I am an incoming sophomore in high school and my dream school is Yale or to get into an ivy league. Freshman year was just a year for me to get into some clubs and be known but now that it is sophomore year, I want to make an impact. Do you think starting a club/becoming founder of it would be impactful? I want to start a club where i am impactful and president for 2 or 3 years. Do you also think starting a math or science olympiad club in my school is great where we are the members who compete in it? Also last question haha, do you have any tips to get SAT scores high? i’m taking my first PSAT this year and want to prepare.
Overall great questions. Starting your own club is great, however you need numbers to back yourself up. Recruit members, make a difference, compete in competitions and get awards etc. Math or science olympiad club is a great idea if you have a solid group of people that consistently compete in competitions and do well, rack up those awards. Regarding the SAT, like all things, it's practice practice practice. There is a DIRECT positive correlation between the number of practice problems you solve and the score you get on the SAT. I've done over 3,000 sat problems and got a 1580. You don't need a tutor, you don't need paid anything. 100 practice questions every day with a timer on, 1 minute 35 seconds spent per math question, a lil more than a minute for each reading and writing question. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DESMOS CALCULATOR. There is no excuse to not get an 800 when you have access to a god damn calculator. Take 3 hour mock exams with a youtube proctor without music or phone every single saturday and grade on sunday to see where you're at and how much you're improving. Hope this helps.
@@sh2nu1ee Thank you so much for this provided feedback! I do have a couple more questions haha. Do you think participating in track & field for 4 years in high school is a good extracurricular to add even though i’m not the best at it? (like i don’t go to regionals or district). Also, i wanted to start a biomedical club, but I need some help on what to do when I start the club and how to get people together. I am just not sure how to make a “difference” and impact with this biomedical club. Do you have any tips? Also, I do want to start a science/math olympiad, but i’m just not sure how to lead the club. Last question, I love the tips you provided me for my SAT, but where should I do practice questions that can tell me my score? I want to practice online digital skills when I take the exam next year, I am well prepared. My goal is 1500-1600.
@@amnaaaaa575For the track and field question, it’s not really a priority if you’re not competitive. Even if you are, getting a scholarship for a sport is incredibly hard and only for the most dedicated of athletes, so *I wouldn’t prioritize it*.
In my opinion you have a lot of time left, assuming you have 2 years left, you could find many places that fit what you want to do or maybe brainstorm ideas and things that you are interested about and maybe try to build your way up from there.
anything and everything you do outside the classroom works, but of course there are activities that are more impactful than others. If you mean AWS as Amazon Web Services, that is definitely something most students do!
I have a CGPA of 8.44 along with internship at my dad's company (supporting family business) since high school and I'm a gap year international student. I work as a Marketing research executive and have initiated 2 projects so far. Additionally, I have started my own tutoring organization that helps underprivileged students from a nearby village. I have a diploma degree in Kathak dance form and was the student council president for 3 consecutive years. I have Speech, debate, and MUN awards, along with 2 prizes for pitching my entrepreneurial idea at an interschool program. These achievements could help me stand out?
it's an unfortunate truth that race is considered, however that's just part of the game. you'll eventually have to just accept it and do the best with what you have. think of it as competing against your own pool of players. stand out from the rest, and you'll be fine. don't blame the player, blame the game, thanks for watching
i'm not going to lie to you, nothing can "guarantee" an acceptance unless there is a direct program with your high school and another specific institution. There isn't any "substitute" or any way to sort of "compensate" for a low GPA unfortunately
@@arnavagrawal9270 it helps in your overall profile but there is nothing that can directly redeem / compensate for a low gpa. gpa is performance over FOUR years. it provides insight into the student much better than an SAT or ACT. they aren't going to let a one time exam be the leading indicator over gpa. don't be deluded into thinking that you'll be okay if you "compensate" your low gpa with a good test score. take every class seriously!!

want to go into psychology (forensic psychology specifically ) . I have no idea what kind of ECs i could do that relate to that field . Does anyone have Suggestions ?
Your info here is really valuable. Thanks
Is this something that would stand out on an application?
why dows the word diarte keep coming up, what does it mean
what are some of the top things i should get started on doing during my sophomore year?
did a video on that previously, should check it out
Thankyou. Really, thankyou.
Hi.I am a G10. Varsity member is better or impact than Junior Varsity member? I am a JV when I was G9 and G10 also.
why do ivy leagues require extracurricular activities? can't gpa alone show that someone is qualified to learn at that school?
A student can be good at test taking yet lack other important skills that good colleges look for (like communication, teamwork, networking skills). They also just want to see the things you’re passionate about and doing such extracurricular activities shows that you’re willing to go above and beyond to pursue your interests
@@scenebynorzini might sound dumb, but i don't believe extracurriculars actually teach anything. they are just an activity
How can i sign up to your thing that helps you get into ivy league
@@chavella aw thank you!!
What's with all the Diarts

Really helpful thanks❤.

I would love to apply for business/econ/finance major next fall semester which is 2026
Ik having ecs related to these major also know as supercurriculars is really good
But can having like a internship in social media managing and content creation also help me boost my ecs for these majors for top 20 schools and Ivies
Also could you make specific video on ecs amd awards for business or econ or finance major
can't lie to you those EC's cant compete with USAPhO qualifiers and others who commonly get into ivy league and t20 schools. however if it's for a huge social media channel for like a big company for example, or do content creation to a huge audience, that would increase the impact of the ec for sure.
Of course
@@sh2nu1ee Thanks for replying, i was the only one of high school , who was a campus ambassador, rest other were from different colleges.
Same here bro from india, applied to all ivies was winner of a prestigious research competition at india ( national children science congress winner) and got lor from mit still got rejected
I mean Massachusetts Institute of tech
Can I book the consultation even though I’m taking the gap year and I’m not 10th/11th grader in high school?
will they allow a junior in hs to do research or internships? how do i find those opportunities?
What is your opinion about online internship?
Do you think is possible to get in into prestigious university for scholarship with low gpa?
Does my extracurricular can guarantee my acceptance if my GPA is low ? I will apply for government scholarships
How did you changed the old editing style, do you edit your edit video
Hi Shinwoo,
I am an incoming sophomore in high school and my dream school is Yale or to get into an ivy league.
Even if you are, getting a scholarship for a sport is incredibly hard and only for the most dedicated of athletes, so *I wouldn’t prioritize it*.
im so cooked imma senior 💔
Well, sh*t, man. I'm gonna finish Grade 10 soon, whatever the hell am I sposed to do in the time I have left?? 💀
In my opinion you have a lot of time left, assuming you have 2 years left, you could find many places that fit what you want to do or maybe brainstorm ideas and things that you are interested about and maybe try to build your way up from there.
@@kam1kaz3hnd80 thanks for the advice man :D
I am doing a work experience program with AWS does that count? I am gonna apply for CS 😭
anything and everything you do outside the classroom works, but of course there are activities that are more impactful than others. If you mean AWS as Amazon Web Services, that is definitely something most students do!
@@sh2nu1ee is it possible if I send you my stats and you could review my profile?
Can you make a video on med bro
do you mean a video on med schools?
u should collab with rishab jain
Anyone wanna collab in anything??? Im in 11th grade rn open to any partner projects

@@sh2nu1ee Why accept it? There's a reason behind it and it's not empathy for Blacks and Hispanics mate

Does my extracurricular can guarantee my acceptance if my GPA is low ? I will apply for government scholarships
i'm not going to lie to you, nothing can "guarantee" an acceptance unless there is a direct program with your high school and another specific institution. There isn't any "substitute" or any way to sort of "compensate" for a low GPA unfortunately
@@sh2nu1ee I thought SAT/ACT scores can help "compensate" for a low gpa
@@arnavagrawal9270 it helps in your overall profile but there is nothing that can directly redeem / compensate for a low gpa. gpa is performance over FOUR years. it provides insight into the student much better than an SAT or ACT. they aren't going to let a one time exam be the leading indicator over gpa. don't be deluded into thinking that you'll be okay if you "compensate" your low gpa with a good test score. take every class seriously!!
