This is an awesome video! And it brings back memories, yes. I was ten in 1969 when the world was in a higher-faster-mood: first flight of the Boeing 747, Apollo 11 landing on the moon, and the introduction of the hovercraft cross channel! Actually, we young boys were very much intrigued by this splendid piece of British ingenuity, and this even more fuelled by an article in our English textbook about the S.R.N.4. Needless to say that as soon as I was allowed to travel on my own to Britain in 1976, I did my first trip on the Calais-Ramsgate line onboard Hoverlloyd's 'Swift'. I was lucky enough having crossed the channel several times on the S.R.N.4s Mk. II and III until 1991, and even once on the N 500 Naviplane in 1979. Have always been addicted to this form of travel which resembled so much a hybridisation of ship and aircraft. Thank you very much for having shared this valuable testimony!
Pity they are no longer in service. I made the trip between Calais and Dover back in the 1980s, in this very craft, "The Princess Anne"! Thanks for the memories! It was a fun ride :)
On my first trip to England in 1983 I saw the Hovercraft and was fascinated by it. Came back in 1990 and crossed from France to Dover on rough seas. It was a noisy and bumpy ride but fairly fast. Not glamorous as I had imagined but still a good memory maker.
From the same people that brought us the Harrier jump jet, Concorde, the Merlin engine that transformed the P-51 mustang, the engine that was stolen for the MiG-15, and the industrial revolution. Great vid, especially drive on. Would be great for Seattle - Victoria route
Yea man ! There are still people that still wont baleave this was real . An amazing sight of a true amphibious machine with pure rubber and more than two engines. Thanks for your time in making this.
Park it in back of your house and watch the nabours shit thenselfs . Especially when the powers up for a Good lift 😆😆🤣🤣🤣 laffing like a Super criminal. ..
Took this ride from Dover, England to Calais, France. That was a blast. Skimming over the water, waves splashing the windows. There was also duty free shopping during the ride. Gotta have that Toblerone chocolate. 😁😁
yes it would.. there's the body part of it.. and around the bottom and underneath is the air from one of the propellers being pocketed in the skirt (the big black part puffing up like a balloon) so it can hover.. when there's no air the body just rests on top of the water
yes, all over the world! for all sorts of used inc. army, ambulance in remote places, ferry/cargo like you see here, tours and joyrides .. just it's not super common as a joyrides thing so you don't see it around much.. it's more for the big dogs cause they're not cheap!
Brings back beautiful memories of early childhood - used to cross this way several times a year to visit my dad who lived in france. As a small kid i always used to find it so impressive- the noise, the way it "floated" on land and water, and the sheer ingenuity of the thing! Once this was gone, nothing could replace it. Looking back in this it looks quite a bit smaller than i remembered it!
Yes I rode on this in1989 I purchased a tichet in Amsterdam left Amterdam about 7AM on special bus owned by Hoverspeed I think bus left Holland travelled west through Belgium and France and met with these Hovercraft channel crossing took about 40 some minutes and bus was waiting in Dover took us straight to London then I got on train straight to Liverpool then Mesrey rail to Ormskirk there by 8 9PM amazing I made it from Amsterdam back to Ormskirk all in one day crossed travelled through 4 countries by lend in one day
I remember a trip from Calais many years ago. The channel was millpond flat but the cup of coffee that I had on my tray was vibrating so much it tipped over and spilt ........ those Proteus engines certainly delivered the power but were far from smooth
These SRN4 'Mountbatten' Class hovercraft operated between the Hoverports at Ramsgate [Pegwell Bay] and Calais, and between Dover Harbour and Calais/Boulogne. They stopped operating in 2000 and two are presently preserved in the hovercraft Museum near Southampton. There was a plan to recondition them and use them across Lake Ontario in 2010 but nothing has come of this. A smaller hovercraft still operates a frequent service between Southsea and Ryde,Isle of Wight.
This might sound like a silly question, but I've often wondered, if this craft had an engine failure half way across the channel, would it float or not?
If you stand in front of it and it runs over you, maybe with the cushion of air you are unharmed. But every single one of your hairs will turn white in the process.
ohh that wasa great pice of ferry althrough I only was onbord it once witch by the way was do to the fact that we ware on the "normal" ferry two days before and something rushed passed us pretty fast out on open sea and the day after on the frensh side we ware down at the docks to see what it was and yeah well the day after we ware in the UK again this time with this wonder mashine and funny enough it was both faster and cheaper althrough it was another type of ride and it was a walk on trip but also a tiny bit more rough compared to the "normal" ferry but I do say it's pretty sad that they scraped them
Fortunately, at this stage, The Princess Anne and The Princess Margaret still exist at The Hovercraft Museum at Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire, however sadly their future isn't looking good and maybe scrapped within the next few months due to land and money complications.
When I was living in England from 1974 to 1976, I took a trip on one from Dover to Calais. One big hovercraft.
Hi my friend how are you
Can you help me

@GIGABACHI - This was the Hoverspeed Hovercraft (1969-2000) between Dover (England) and Calais (France), British Channel
I remember James Bond taking Peter Franks' Triumph Stag on the "SeaSpeed" Hovercraft in "Diamonds are forever".
That one was the 'Princess Margaret' .
Year 2020 and youtube recommends this for me.
Me too 😣

Year 2022 & UA-cam Recommend Me This Video 🔥
Visited the UK from the USA in 1983 and took HoverSpeed one day to Calais. Felt like I was riding a stone skipping over the water!
I always enjoyed a ride with the Hoverspeed :-) Great sound and vibrations...and very fast.

thanks for posting. I rode this in 89 but never saw inside the car deck, just the passenger area

Brings back childhood memories to me too - we used to live in France and crossed the opposite way for short vacations.

Yes they use to "operate" between Boulogne (France) and Dover (UK) ... But they abandoned the crossings ... Pity I liked them ...

Great machine, apparently it wasn't cost effective, and too bumpy to ride when the sea wasn't flat, but still, crazy look

Like riding in a bus with no silencer over a ploughed field!
Butiful 💕 video
Great video! My cross channel experiences only began after the closure of the hovercraft so interesting to see what it was like

You would look at that, listen and think 'wtf is this? Run!'
Me lol 😂
We had one or two crossings with an engine failure, it still carried on fine but went sideways a bit more instead of straight line.
This is very good and called science, nothing more.

Once stowed away on a channel hovercraft - ticket had expired - niftily done - très irrégulier!
Parabéns pelo seu trabalho
It was no wiper washers, in England at that time(?) - or it was a concept with the Yellow Submarine in mind (?)
I always wanted to go on one and never did.
Ó xenty! A pois é um disco avuadô?!?😂😂😂
es war immer wieder ein Erlebnis mit dem Gefährt über den Kanal zu fliegen. Schade das es eingestellt wurde.
Why 33 dislikers ?? Great vid !
We miss this great opportunity to travel quickly and well over the channel

It would sink like a rock. That is why it has four engines. It could probably cripple along on two engines , any less would be danger of sinking.

great times with my family on this 1984.

Ce n'est plus qu'un souvenir. Lhoverport de Calais n'existe plus. Ré gis Lehoucq. Lille. France.
These machines were brilliant. Much cheaper to operate than a tunnel. They must be reinstated and give Eurotunnel some competition.
Será o transporte da besta fera ????
no worries ;) yeah that would be pretty funny if the fuel ran out and it sunk.. actually maybe not lol but it would be a bit silly lol
During typhoon this vehicle can be a disaster too.
No, the reason services stopped operating was because the Channel Tunnel was taking away too many customers.
Sun is still on its place ,moon is still on its place , same brightness of the sun, same coldness of the moon only the people got changed. 😑
beautiful
Is this still in operation??? I´ve visit Dover and didn´t see it... I think is a good way to go to France....
Just like the Concorde...it's all about the money, not the brains :P
is this in the UK? i always wanted to see and ride one of these big ones!!
Best way to cross the channel. SOME GENIUS BRING THIS BACK.
the hovercraft is one of two cool things you Brits come up with, the other by far has to be James Bond
Yup, this and vinegar crisps too
