A truly game changer for the stand mount speakers, Everything is great when synergy clicked.
Evo 4.2 sounded best with neutral to a little warmer sounding amplifiers, bass response is amp dependent. A little more instrument separation with Bi-Wiring but it ruin great stereo image, no bi-wiring for me.
Total refinement in perfection, sound great at any level of loudness.
Late night low level music listening is great, every details is clearly reproduced for such low volume.
Better the amp you have better the sound will get, truly magical for the price that sells for, this could be the end speakers for many audiophiles.

Please tell me I’m not the only one that finds his voice calming. I could imagine him as a very patient teacher. Monk?
Agreed. He just sounds like genuinely nice person
I wish we were neighbors...
I like how you do a review. Your simple “audiophile vocabulary” is easy to understand and your elaboration to the sound is very detailed, which is quite rare compared to other reviewer in just keep praising every equipment they have listened and reviewed. Kudos to you, and keep it up. Subscribed👍🏼
Here is the latest Sound comparison of Evo 4.2 and Quad S2 speakers; ua-cam.com/video/88lnQ_uaLk8/v-deo.html
extremely clean sound. these are so good, you won't like to stop listening music anytime. very smooth but very detailed too.
Hi naveen here. Have you listen these speakers
Perfect Stand For Evo 4.2 (Sort Of Review Part 2)
ua-cam.com/video/I43aPrvjch8/v-deo.html
Which would you suggest, the Focal Aria 906, or these? I have been saving for the Focals, but now these, have me torn!
@@scottdavis0801 They are totally different sounding speakers, Evo 4.2 is rich tone signature with detail sound, Focal is much more on neutral side with detail presentation. Also check out Quad S2, thanks
Would these work good for home theater I'm looking for really good bookshelf speakers for the 5 main channels and pairing them with f18 rythmik subwoofers and would a outlaw 5000 be good enough to run them
I was Looking at the Evo 4.3 and your glowing review of the 4.2s makes me want to hear them!
Thank you for another fine review. These look to be speakers I could thoroughly enjoy, as I play many music genres constantly, including in the background, for dedicated listening, at all times of day, and at various volumes. Very nice job presenting them.
I love your talking about the inside details! GREAT JOB!!
Many thanks for all of your reviews. You use straightforward language and I appreciate the way you describe all the points. Cheers!
Please see this post for latest measurement with corrected microphone position, ua-cam.com/users/postUgwB_2-WyPzlEOKw2Ax4AaABCQ
it would be really interesting to see how it compares with the KEF R3 or Buchardt S400. most magazines tout the R3 to be best under 2000$ whereas youtubers claim that its the buchardt. please do a vid comparing the two
Hi!On the graph can see the kef is the most linear in the row.
Important its bass not lift or fall about 40-70 Hz, and at treble it has good outlay, not fall so much at the end section of response.
Hmmm.. I heard something similar at the comparison.. I not prefer kefs but in this way I am thinking about it... 🤔👍
@@darpanbhuyan1909 i wanted to buy kef r3 and almost bought but bought these instead, very happy. best part is that it digs so much details yet it is so refined, no harshness at all.
Which is better, the 4.2 or 4.4? It’s a shame the 4.4 is $2,000 and can’t even go as low as 32 Hz ......
Nikhil Kumar Surely you’re using a sub?? Why didn’t you get the 4.4? Just curious!
Sincere, competent and realistic description of the product.
I think i just found my new speakers,i have been following you for over three years and have been listening through my 1994 Polk LS 50's of witch i changed out the titanium dome tweeters for a pair of Vifa DT 19's from out of a pair of Paradigm Titans a few years ago and what a drastic change they made. There is not alot of info on Polk LS 50's but i think they are very underated, clairity ,soundstage, tight deep bass and 50 lbs. each. Thank you for this amazing review, great job as always.
You have very nice speakers with personal touch, I think you should check out the Evo towers as well, thanks
Very good review Tharbamar. You make a very convincing case for the purchase of a pair of Wharfedale Evo 4.2 speakers!
At last, a proper review.. thanks
Great review.
I bought and currently using Floor stander version of this - Evo 4.4 and for the price point - amazing speaker overall!!!
@savan - Hi, where did you buy it from and for how much?
Hi @savan, what kind of speakers do you use for surround. I’m building a home theatre using evo 4.4 as floor standing speakers.
Did you listen to the evo 4.3's?
Thanks for the review. You are one of only very few people reviewing Wharfedale. Please review the Revo 4.1s
Excellent, in depth review, thank you
Had a listen to these at a dealer, compared to my 706 s2, highs lacked the sparkle of B&W but 3 way integration was seamless and a midrange advantage, The rolloff was not as bad as your graph indicates. They had Elysian 2, man they massive stand mounts...Thanks for review
Not many speakers sound as bright as the B&Ws, fortunately.
Love LOVE your reviews - and love your voice. If you release an album of your reviews, I’ll buy it to smooth me to sleep 🤪
Hi! After your video maybe I 'll back to wharfedales! Now its available in my country too. Good review!
Just what I was looking for
Awesome review, nice work
Very nice test , congratz
Recent subscriber... awesome videos, very informative, and appreciate the time and effort you put into the comparison reviews and sound demos. I would love to hear your opinion between the Evo 4.2 and Lintons... a sound demo between the two would be awesome!
Great review. Thanks
Great looking speakers. I'd be happy to have a pair.
Beautiful!
Omg amazing sound.... 👏 thank you
Enjoy your reviews. Hope someday Revels M16, M105 more affordable models cross your path.
Amazing review as always, I was wondering how would it compare to Polk LSiM 703 or the new Polk Legend?
Thanks very nice review and honest
Thanks for watching!
Just ordered by your review and other praises. I can't wait till tomorrow!!! Thank you. (by the way, the UA-cam caption system gives me 'evil' for 'evo' :))
Have you received the speakers? What is your impression? I am also interested in these.
Wow, sounds like you finally hit the speaker motherlode, in terms of overall satisfaction from a reasonably priced pair!
Hey, how are you? I haven’t heard from you for long time, glad to see you again, thanks
@@Tharbamar Yeah, ha ha! It's been awhile since i've left a comment! Actually, i've been taking notice of most of the vids you've posted over the last several months, but sadly haven't been too enthusiastic over most of your equip choices....that is, until now! Being a HUGE Wharfedale fan myself, THIS particular review of yours really got my attn and was totally compelled to leave a comment! (By the way, I just picked up a pair of really discounted Jamo C93 II's on Crutchfield for only $315 a pair! They were MORE than half off! Zero Fidelity reviewed 'em some months back and really liked them!)
@@corkydukeII5898 wow that's a great price!!
WOW THOSE ARE NICE.
The Wharfedale Evo is a huge jump over the Diamonds.
Great tone.
Super quiet background n imaging n separation.
I have the 4.1.
After acclimatising to the Evo’s AMT sound. I appreciate the NON-FATIGUING sound.
Superb mid band.
Solid bass punch and weight.
Please share your view. The difference between the 4.1 n 4.2.
Old skool design with proper 3 way design.
Bring back the 4 way with super tweeter.
Thanks for letting us know that it sound great with Metal.
Ok only 3 mins in, but 1st initial thought,, looks like wharfdale have really stepped up there game here, especially with internal detail,, which makes perfect sense especially Nowadays with reviewers probing ever increasingly deeper into the nuts & bolts/machanics of the products
Great review! Given the height of this speaker, what do you feel would be the best speaker stand height? Also, have you listened to the 4.1s?
Thank you for your channel, I always find your videos very interesting and well done. I take your advices quite siriusly. I was wandering if you can help me with my doubt. Unfortunately I do not have the space to put stands on my room (5 * 5.5m) but I have to locate the speakers over the TV forniture (which is 50 cm high). I was considering the W. Diamond 11.2 and the Evo 4.2, but I am afraid that the Evo 4.2 are less forgiven with the position. I am not sure if the diamond 11.2 are similar to your diamond 225 but they should be. In the future I would like to use class d amp (at the moment I have Yamaha rn602). What do you suggest in my case? Is there a lot difference between w diamond 225 and Evo 4.2? Thank you so much.
Great review! Though you were checking to see if your subwoofer was turned on when listening to these? I'm a bit skeptical. The woofer on these speakers are tiny and the frequency response doesn't go very low.
Nice set of speakers...
Amazed by your videos. Very helpfull and informative.
As the Elysian speakers are way above my budget, are these Evo 4.x a good alternative ? I got my eyes on the Evo 4.4
Using a Marantz SR5014 with Monitor Audio Silver Rx6 and not totally happy right now. So hoping these Evo's would be an upgrade.
Also love this song you where playing as demo (sounds better then the version of Simon and Garfunkel :-) ) but i can't find it on Tidal
Greetings from the Netherlands.
I replaced my Magnepan .7's with these and have never been happier. These are georgous speakers and play with "regardless of price" feel. They do "beat" the KEF LS50's in every respect. I do like the LS50's, but the Wharfedale is just so damn smooth and accurate.
These are one the very rare dynamic speaker that come closest to point source speakers. Thanks
Hi have you compare these with ls50
@@NaveenKumar-uh2gk I heard LS50's alot (they are very popular) and they are excellent speakers. But my biased opinion is that the EVO 4.2 are bit more subtle and defined, or transparent, than the LS50's. But that is just my opinion, others may feel different. Both are excellent.
I want to give these a listen.
Very nice review, wonder how they compare to Foca Aria 906.
I have the Wharfedale Reva 1 they are already very good!
Great sound and video. Pitty of the 75-150 Hz dip in your room. Makes them sound a little thin in the video. Nothing wrong with the highs (especially on Scarborough Fair) If you can get hold of a pair Elac Vela bs 403 ($2k) I wonder if the Vela's are that much better (or the even priced $1k Carina's for that matter)
Love the deeeep cabinets, which is hard to find unless you buy PMC.
thank you TBR! Your vid was the reason i got me Diamond bookshelfs. I eventually added a tweeter with them. How does this compare versus the diamonds with super tweeter combo?
One of ur Best Reviews Ever they is Nothing else to Say on it good Job Man I'm Sold on it ❤ did you buy them for ur Self
I got a set coming on your recommendation good sir, paired with a denon power amp, Macintosh pre, rega phono stage, and a project espirit with a grado cartridge. Excited!
Thanks for the informative review. How would you contrast these against the Wharfedale Linton you previously reviewed?
I preferred Evo 4.2, thanks
I’m am really considering the floor standing 4.4s. Getting ready to overhaul my entire system.
Excellent review! Love them in white but will they turn yellowish over time?
I heard this song from many of your reviews with this speakers the song is on a different level altogether even when compared to your 706 S2 demo I am talking about headphone listening.
Agree Bro
Scaraborough fair, amazing song.
Just bought them new for €530,-. I can't wait to have them delivered!
I want these. Time to upgrade form my 225's. Do you find the treble in the Evo 4.2 more extended & airy then the 225's?
It looks as if the measurement only draw the sound of mid & bass driver, no high frequency from tweeter at all?
I've just been listening to the denton 85th anniversary and i felt they sounded small. I get home and watched your review of the 4.2's so i had to book another afternoon to listen to them. Hopefully it will match my kit and room. Thankyou for the recommendation if they're as good for me as they are for you that'll end 4 months of looking.
New look looks good..speakers good too.
Thanks
Excellent review, thank you. You mention that as far as amp pairing that these speakers would do well with neutral to warm amplification. Then you mention that (or seem to) that if an amp is too warm then that may not do well to help these speakers shine. Would you classify a tube amp as too warm?
Curious if you could expand a little on this or even suggest an amp?
Charles,
Canada
Hi Charles I think I can answer your question. I use vincent SV-500 along with BluseSound node 2i for my EVO 4.2 ( 2 channel ) + biwiring. Vincent has both TUBE Pre-Amp and a Solid State Amp in it. It sounds overly bright to my ears AND is overbearing after listening. My ears starting to hurt and I will have to stop listening for a while. I am thinking to buy a warm sounding amp and use my vincent as a pre-amp. I am looking into a AVR also due to I just bought an EVO 4.C Center Channel. Any suggestions with the AVR ? thanks
Hey man! Nice review. These might replace might diamond 225 as a second pair. These speakers are on my radar and just got a question, would they be good for small rooms and if the soundstage presents any depth?
Thanks again for the review. Im thinking also about the elac dbr62 since those are cheaper.
Sorry for late reply, Evo 4.1 is better choice for smaller spaces, thanks
Great review! Now i want em!!
Great review ,thank you for your time and knowledge
I am looking for a pair of compact speakers and you got me really interested in thease ones . Really dig the design/looks and also like the fact that thei are somewhat toller than normal bookshelfs .I whant to place them directly on my Lowboard/Media Console
Sadly i have never had the chance to hear a pair of Wharfedale speakers , but everything you described in your video go whith my taste
Only thing i would like to know is , how good/bad are this when played at low volume ? Also a few more sound clips would be nice
Thank you and Greetings from Austria
Low level listening is very good, I did put notes in video description, I will have more sound samples in my next video, thanks
@@Tharbamar Thank you for the feedback, ohh, sorry, i saw the description :-), now I am really exited for these speakers
Nice review and good discussion of performance of speakers. The bass is the problem for me, not only with this speaker but many bookshelf compact speakers. Sure you can add a subwoofer but then you have a messy situation in small confined area for many people. I did not see how these speakers can bring the bass otherwise . So I’d rather spend more and get something bigger or something special and smaller that brings Umph than try to believe my speakers are punching beyond their price point (which rarely happens anyways because market is competitive)
It seems you haven't auditioned the KEF Q350s. If you don't have a massive room to fill and position your bookshelf speakers right, you may never need a sub for music. And for movies, you'll always need a sub unless you have something like the TEKTON double impacts.
Thanks for the great review! Could you make review of "Advance Paris A10 Classic" because I am considering buying and use it with Evo 4.2 but there is a lack of information about it? Thanks!
Thanks for the great review. How would these speakers compare to the diamond 225? Do they have the same warm, rich tone and do you prefer these over the diamonds?
Good Job!!! have you reviewed yet the Elysian 2?
Coming soon, thanks
Hey, your new reference speaker? Part of your system now? I really liked the review. Cheers
Thanks
Another Honest and Un Biased Review
I'd love to see these compared to the Swan/HiVi DIY 3.1A. They are very similar in that they are a 3 way speaker with a ribbon tweeter, soft dome midrange and a 6.5" woofer with a phaseplug. I have these speakers and although they are my first set of real speakers, they sound nothing short of astonishing in my modest setup. In my opinion, they possess much of the same characteristics you describe in these Whaferdale. Complete bargain at around $300.
Anyway, great review!! You have a new subscriber!
I forgot to mention that my setup has the "Perfectionist Crossover" mod. Highly Recommended!
I love 3 way bookshelf speakers ! The
Polk audio Lsim 703 has been one of my favorites so far , thats why i took them apart on me channel 😆
Now these come out for 1k thats crazy good price ! I would love to Pop the hood on these ! Does this Wharfdale have a second order crossover ? The one you showed us looked like good compasitors but sancast transitors are on everything now ! Thanks for the video !
The speaker stands look great. What kind are they?
Great review! Thx! Looking to buy evo 4.2s very soon - what speaker stands are they stood on in your video? They are big book shelf speakers so just wondering which stands to use.
He made another video referencing the stands for the evo's :)
I went back to your video with the 706 S2 with Scarborough fair and compared them side by side on two tabs on Google Chrome and same volume. Was the recording position of the microphone and volume different? the 706 seems to blow this out of the water in your recording. It seems much louder and with your old Amp too.....hmm
Nice haircut bro!
Thanks, It’s DIY.
@@Tharbamar The haircut machine was obviously biwired.
@@calaf_725 🤣🤣🤣
What a fabulous sound.Iam planning to sell my RP 600M and will buy either LS50 or this extraordinary speaker.
Let me know when you're selling. I'll buy them off you
Wow. From the moment I saw these I was pretty sure they would be in the 2-3k range! Nicely done! Thanks for the review awesome channel btw.
Very nice review. How do they sound at low volume? Thanks
Very good, I put notes in video description about it, thanks
How do these compare with the similarly priced Denton 85th? Would be great to know.
I have and old set of B&W 602/s3's from about the same cabinet sized format as the Evo's. I think the Evo's will be on my list as a follow up. :)
Excellent review.. How would you compare these to b&w 606? Thanks
These wins
Pairing with Denon sound divine! What do you think about pairing with Yamaha RN 803?
It would be great.
Tharbamar, another great review. I’ve had my eye on these since they first came out, now I know to keep them on my short list. Any thoughts (comparison) you can share vs the Linton? Thank You!
Personally I like Evo 4.2 a lot more than Linton, thanks
I would love to hear if you have listened to the 4.4's? I currently own the Lintons and although quite happy with them am looking for a significant upgrade. Your thoughts would be awesome! Oh, and I have built both the interconnects and speaker cables from you videos. Great quality and sound for very reasonable prices!
Thanks again,
Tim
I will request one, thanks
How about the new Elac Carina with AMT? When you have a chance, I love to have your thought on it.
They are crap.
Elac focuses on warm dead dull smooth laid-back dark sound.
Tharbamar Sir ! I love your awesome work ! your videos are very informative & enjoyable. Can u pls suggest me an AVR for my EVO 4.2 AND a recently added EVO 4.C Center Channel ( it's a BIG Speaker ) ?? Currently using a VINCENT SV-500 tube amp for my 2.1 setup + biwiring which sounds too harsh, overbearing & ear fatiguing. I'm looking for something nice, warm & laidback sound with lots of details for watching MOVIES & MUSIC listening. I have no sub + have 2 bed room apt. Can i use my vincent as a pre-amp to the AVR if possible ? thanks in advance.
I do not like bi-wiring because it’s not beneficial to reproduce cohesive sound quality with deep sound stage, for the receivers I would suggest either Yamaha or Denon in your price range should do better for 3 channel set up, thanks
Great Review. Is it wise to compare the Evo 4.2 to the speakers you are usually reviewing? The 4.2 holds 3 drivers and much bigger enclosure then other speakers you have reviewed in the past. Won't a comparison between the 4.2 and the Kef r3 for example will be more adequate?
I will be doing that in the future, please remember I had R300 before, thanks
@@Tharbamar how does it compare to the KEF R300 in your opinion?
Great review, @Tharbamar, I am about to get one, is Yamaha RN303 sufficient to drive those speakers ? Thanks
Man you love your warmer sounding speakers! I think I prefer the more lively sound of the B&W's but that being said even over youtube you can really hear the scale and depth of these speakers and I like that, it's got me thinking about the Evo 4.1.
Yes B&W can be problem with some recoding, this speaker is all about music.
Looks nice. However I wish the yellow ribbon was grey or black.
That sx-11 is a masterpiece. From which shop in japan did u buy. Will it affect the sound quality if we use a step down transformer.
Step down transformer does not effect sound quality if you use 3kva rated transformers. I think my cousin get it from small shop name called Misusawa.
again, love your review. My bank is bleeding... What would be the key difference when you compare the evo 4.2 with the diamond 225? Thanks for making time Tharbama (what a name!).
i wish you could use the old music that you use to do your demo clip. This music track is not representative of testing a speaker, no bass, no other electronic sound. Any system can make this music track sound good, unless its a totally shitty system. I'm referring to Evie Sand's "While I look at you."
The big difference is sound stage, scale and bass performance with surrounded by floating musical notes (lack of words), Thanks
Thanks for the review. I will buy it maybe next year. So can you please recommend me a amplifier, which is a good match with it around $1,000 USD. Right now i am using rotel pre and power amplifier RB 1070.
I will keep the amplifier and just get speakers because it may be good match with these speakers if my memory serves me right.
Thanks for the great review! If i will replace my Dentons 80th Anniversary with these what do you think i would gain and what i would loose? Thanks
Having Dentons at home I've listened to Evo's 4.4 few weeks back and 4.2 today at the local dealer. Have to say I much prefer Dentons for coherency and overall musicality. Vocals, distortion guitars and jazz sounds better on Dentons. Evos had a slight unnatural raise in middle frequency that I didn't like all that much. They were maybe more dynamic, a bit more transparent and faster in high frequencies and had slightly bigger presentation of classical music. In few days I'll compare Evos with Lintons powered by my Sansui amplifier to get things straight and maybe start to look at models from other manufacturers.
@@miharoskar Thanks for your honest opinion. I imagined something similar to what you experienced. If you don't mind, please update me after your test at home. I'm also curious about how the Evos perform at low listening levels since the Dentons are not bad at all for a relaxing late night listening. Best
Wow, this is a really glowing review. I like the flexibility of having two sets of speakers for variety so I switch between KEF LS50's and Wharfedale Diamond 225's. I know you have lots of experience with both KEF LS50 and Diamond 225. My question is, would you rather have just the Wharfedale Evo 4.2 than both LS50 and Diamond 225?
Price on the Evo line is great for what you get
it almost sounds like i'm listening to a regular recording even through the video. can't wait till i can get some.
