I made 3D on board 1. After drawing trumps I played on spades immediately and at some point defenders played on hearts, so I didn't have to work out to finesse the 8. B3 bid 2H and had a brain fart and let 2S make. Board 5 I had the same auction to 6S and got a spade lead. I won in dummy and played a heart towards the queen. If East wins, I just need neither major to be worse than 4-2. If West wins, I need one major to be 3-3, and the other no worse than 4-2. B7 I decided to upgrade to 1NT and played there making 9 tricks for 86%. I opened B8 and it went (no opps bidding) 1C (so I can pass if partner bids 1D)- 1S - 1NT - 2D (nmf) - 2NT - 3H. This is forcing, but I passed and made 10 lucky tricks for 96% and 78% total.
Nice set! I totally screwed up 3D - I should of made it. I think its better to pull a heart towards the queen at trick 2 in 3D but even still I had the knowledge that finessing the 9 was the best play. B5 I think your line is the best looking at it retrospectively. I showed the hand to a bunch of people and they came up with various lines but I think heart to the queen is best odds. I still think passing out board 8 is the winning EV action but obviously when your partner has an opening hand it isn't a good choice.
B1: I defended 2S, after doubling 2H and let it through for a disastrous 11%. Don't know what I was thinking. Should really be trying to declare anyway on B1 anyway (all green). B2 same. B3 I bid 2H and got to defend 2S (correctly this time) for the magic +200 and 96%. B4 same. B5 Got the DK lead after 1H:1S:2S:3N:4H:4N:5H:6S. Ruffed two more diams in dummy trying to bring the queen down , drew trumps and swung the HQ, conceding the last trick for 12. B6 2N+1 for 43%. B7 same. B8 1D:1S:1N:2C:2D:2H. making 2H+1, 89%. 68.3% for the set.
With the slam hand I think bidding 3NT is another decent choice, but what were your entries back to your hand to ruff two diamonds did you still have another diamond loser if the heart finesse failed? I think winning the ace of diamonds and ruffing one diamond and playing a heart to the queen could still be the best line on the diamond king lead.
I think you are right and that is a better line, I relied on trumps breaking with the extra chance of a diamond discard on the long club, so I crossed with CA and a trump, drew trumps, tested clubs and then relied on the heart finesse (East might not have a diamond left to cash)
I made (unrecorded, wasnt in the mood) 1NT+2 on board 7 (guess the auction :p ). Board 1 I set 3H once after another 'imaginative' 1NT and the ludicrous Cappelletti on 4-5. Board 3 I bid 2H so they went to 2S-2 for a huge score. However, none of this matters, (you won 64.7-62.5) because I brainlessly let through -690 on board 2. Good game!
of course my wacko 1NT's are a matter of taste at best but I really disagree with passing on board 3 - it seems like they're making 1N a lot (the robots aren't that weak when V as far as I know) and we have a cheap partial, either making or down 1-2 undoubled. I disagree allowing 11 tricks on board 2 the most, though, of course. :)
I don't mind opening 1NT on either of those boards, the 13 count is a little too pushy for me, the 5422 with 5 decent hearts I think is a completely reasonable action. As for the idea of bidding 2H over 1NT or not, the way I think about it is what would you have bid if east passed? I was going to bid 1NT but now they are playing it vul and I don't think 2H will make a lot of the time. I assumed 1NT our direction would make and maybe not 2H and hence passed. letting them make 11 tricks is hard work on board 2. Decent set though and I am sure there will be one week where I open more 1NT's then you but it will take a while.
Peter Hollands yea the 1NT on 5H4D is certainly reasonable, although I don't usually do it in real life unless my doubletons are working. I tend to prefer showing my suits, it feels like more options to win - although certainly giving them their free 1S overcall is a huge loss. I'm not sure if I'd have bid 1NT had east passed, again, very simple-minded maybe but it is a 4-4 fit, who knows about which minor they can run on us, maybe both (yes I know pessimistic), shrug. Sometimes in MP you have these hands in which whichever side bids 1NT wins the board. I know they're vulnerable but that only basically gets in play if they go down 2, which I really doubt to be honest. But this is probably partially based on my defensive abilities, lol (see board 2). I am not a terrible defender if I trust my partner but I long ago gave up on trusting GIB's defence, probably wrongfully so but anyway that's about the size of it. As for more 1NT's than me, that is a distinct possibility if you get a bunch of 17-ish counts that I upgrade into the Mexican range, who knows :p
you can't always but I would have a brief glimpse at the description before you bid. Sometimes it will say something ludicrous like 25+ total points. Don't bid those as the robots will go off the rails.
Just love your tutorial.

Wow. I'm going to have to sharpen up.

Good guy, welcome Pete!

Another convincing win to you.

I call that 'the race to 1NT.'

Question
HOw can you keep the robots from bidding too high?!!!!!! Maybe this doesn't happen to you. Does to me all the time. I am a beginner.
you can't always but I would have a brief glimpse at the description before you bid. Sometimes it will say something ludicrous like 25+ total points. Don't bid those as the robots will go off the rails.
