This being one of my very favorite game soundtracks, I've wanted to pay homage to it for a while, but this idea seemed pretty daunting.. but once the work started, it became more an exciting project than a slog. I've broken down (almost) every tune from this OST in the "vgstrings" style and arranged them into separate parts that I then played on my guitar and edited together, letting these amazingly composed songs shine in both their complexity and their simplicity. I hope you enjoy the watch and the listen!

I played this at the coffee shop I work at and everyone wanted to know about the character select screen music ❤ Bet you didn’t know that your music would make it to someone’s butterscotch frappe someday in 2023!
I had always hoped for the double decaf venti espressocino, but I'm happy to settle for the b-scotch. Thanks a lot for listening and for the chuckle!
Meyna's and Lyll's themes are my favourite out of your compilation here. They're so beautiful stripped down like this. You've knocked this out of the park. Thank you so much for paying homage to this game. It deserves tons of attention, and your love letter is filled with all the best sweet nothings about it.
I found the transition from the boss theme to Meyna's to be the most powerful for me.. her theme is so beautiful. Thank you so much, and I'm so happy this is bringing you happiness!
Legacy of the Wizard unplugged. Perfect.
This game’s soundtrack is criminally overlooked, you did it tremendous justice with very cool arrangements and gorgeous playing, well done!
Thank you so much for checking it out.. I highly agree, though it's nice to know this title has such a cult following.
@@TheReNesance I actually had planned on recording an electric guitar (and programmed synth bass) version of the first dungeon theme, I can send you a link when I do
OH MY GOD I just noticed the animations with the characters playing the guitar at the end, that was unbelievably cute!! ❤
Wonderful! I'd love to see more of these. Like, literally every game ever. :)
^^^^^ This ^^^^^
Haha.. I will get straight to work on this! Definitely have a few other games in mind to do something similar with down the line.
You talented bastard. This is beautiful and very well put together. Powering me through my morning. Thanks for doing this. Amazing, as always.
haha Thank you so much, sir Wallacecakes.. Feel free to revisit every morning!
Wally!
I remember being about four and a half to 5 years old and my mother would take me to the corner movie store where I was allowed to rent a video game for a couple of days. As a child I would usually select the games based on their cover art, and quite frequently I would go home with the original Legend of Zelda in the gold cartridge. Even back then, I was into fantasy stuff like wizards and dragons et cetera. I remember coming across the cover art to Legacy of the Wizard and it looked right up my alley and so I rented that for a few days as well. I noticed much to my liking that it was very similar to legend of zelda that it was a basically open world kind of sandboxy adventure where you could wander around fighting monsters and exploring new locations as you chose, not just the level and the ordering the devs put together. Really, these were the precursors to the first open world sandbox type games in the rpg genre. Fast forward to when I was 19, I started downloading NES emulators and roms, trying to find some of the old titles i used to own/rent.. Eventually I stumbled back on Legacy of the Wizard and started playing it for fun, and curiously looking up guidea to this extremely cryptic game. There is a lot of nostalgia for me around the soundtrack, and it really brought back some old memories.. I found this video last night, looking for lotw cover music.. This video is the hallmark example of all lotw cover attempts imo, hands down the best out there in terms of sound, editing, quality, etc.. Congratulations, very well done.. I dont usually write comments like these, but your hard work and dedication to excellency inspired me to write to you about my memories with this game. Thank you, this is a gem to us all.
This is the kind of story that reminds us all what an awesome time it was to grow up and how awesome these games were, so I appreciate you sharing it. Also, thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment.. it was definitely a labor of love but was more love than laborious.
This is a 10/10 and beautiful all at the same time. One of my favorite video games that I could never beat!
Thanks a lot for listening.. get in there with a map and play through it, it's very rewarding!
this OST or score, rather, shares quite a bit in common with Tangerine Dream's score to the film Legend. Especially "Cottage"
Miss ya brother. The painting livestreams/videos were my absolute favorite thing.
Missed this comment, sorry man.. painting streams will be back in the near future!
I listen to the OST almost every day on my work playlist! I am loving your version and added it as well!
Nice! It is a hell of a soundtrack.. thanks for listening.
I have been listening to this at least a few times every week. Love it!@@TheReNesance
Legacy of the Wizard was a HUGE game for me as a kid, cuz it was this daunting mf labyrinth that i was totally out of my depth trying to play at 7 yrs old, but i grew up with it, always trying to beat it. Now as an adult, its strange that this game fell way down into obscurity and I get to hold onto the memories as something approaching singular and unique, cuz NOBODY remembers this game. But i do.
So, all that to say: when I see someone give this game's frankly *stellar* soundtrack an acoustic makeover (or just a cover), Im front row seat baby. Im getting all the nostalgia chills! Nicely done, sir.
I love the passion that's coming through in your message. I truly understand it.. I rented it one time and got nowhere, but didn't care.. because the combo of the cute sprites, the setting, and sound design and (of course) the tunes made it a memory that I have kept to this day. Thanks a lot for listening/watching!
@TheReNesance Not kidding at all here, I literally have had the overworld theme (that only spans the short portion from the house to the dungeon) as my morning alarm ring tone for the last 2 years. And the first dungeon theme as my general call ring tone.
And, as I said, NOBODY can ever guess what game the music is from, even when I finally tell them.
And honestly, the game is a bitch and a half to get a grip on, but it is worthwhile challenge for those that love the 8-bit aesthetic. I did eventually beat it 🙄 in college... when I discovered ROMs... and walkthroughs.
Yeah, I looked at a map and sat down and played through it as an adult. It was glorious, and now I play through it once in a while and always enjoy it.@@Atamastra
@@Atamastra The main dungeon theme is a fantastic cellphone ringtone! I had it as mine for a very long time. Glad I'm not the only weirdo out there using it as a ringtone.
@@stevenmarkwith6911 Ha! It's also MY phone's main ringtone! That's awesome!
And the inventory select music is my schedule alarm.
Within seconds of this tune starting up, I'm fully swaying along here to the tunes. Amazing and beautiful, truly a masterpiece of arrangements.
Thank you so much, and I'm so glad you enjoyed and swayed to it!
Man someone doing something like this in the years 2020...this is priceless, the music from this game is so awesome, this video is gold!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, and I couldn't agree more about this game's music. It's incredible.
A very neat idea, this is also one of my favorite NES soundtracks and you really nailed it here.
Always glad to hear others loving this soundtrack.. I appreciate the listen and compliment.
Ren, this is really great and amazing. It kinda makes me want to play this game a little more.
Unbelievable. Just, all kinds of incredible and chills. Thank you for making this... so much!
Thank you for taking the time to listen! I know how powerful nostalgia is, and I'm happy this has given you that special feeling.
the highlighting of the map is great
Thanks, as is your avatar
Wow these are great arrangements! I'm so glad you did this, big thanks!
Thanks a lot for watching, glad you enjoyed it
Love it. Great ears, orchestration, performance! And great choice of game music!
I agree about the game music :) Thanks a lot for taking the time to listen.
One of my favorite gsmes. Fantastic!
AMAZING work here!
This is amazing. It's such a tone-rich and lovely rendition of such nostalgic songs. Brought me to my childhood in a wonderful way.
I love hearing that it brought you back to a beautiful place. Thanks a lot for watching and listening.
@@TheReNesance2 years later and I still be coming back to this video. Anytime I'm feeling down, this shit helps me through it. Never thought a beautiful video game rendition would help me through depression. Again amazing work.
@@BudravenOG Music is healing, especially music that connects you to childhood.. I get you. I'm so glad this has helped see you through some tough times. Hang in there
Ok fine, I’ll play this game now XD
Amazing stuff here!
HOW have you not yet?! This has Burst written all over it! It's basically Karnov with a giant scary dungeon and a family and stuff.
This is wonderful, a very underrated game, I still need to beat it. I played it as a kid but I still haven't really sat down and attempted to finish the game. I remember just turning the game on to hear the title screen music play for a few loops before starting the game.
Totally, yes! I hope you do sit down with it and experience it, it's a very cool game and ahead of its time, in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Incredible work!
Thank you for making this.
Fucking awesome
Great stuff! Envious of the art skills and NOW guitar. xD
This sounds awesome. :)
Thanks, JYD! haha
Fantastic arrangements!
I just discovered this now. Thank you for this wonderful rendition of a memorable game from my childhood. I truly appreciate your artistry.
Really sweet comment, thanks so much, and thanks a lot for listening. This game is a very memorable part of my childhood too.. glad you also have a connection to it.
I didn't know there was such a wonderful project. Today is going to be a good day (now it's morning in Japan).
I'm glad you now know of the project! Hope you enjoy it :)
This is GREAT!
SCREAMS THIS IS EVERYTHING❤❤❤❤❤
hell yeah
Legacy of the Wizard. Yet another gaming experience I completely missed out on! Until recently, I'd not even heard of this game, would you believe? (If I'm correct, it did not have a European release.)
After watching this video, a lot more makes sense to me... so that's where all that stuff in The ReNesance's channel came from!
Without any memories of the game, I have no nostalgia for it. So, when I say that I find this rendition of the soundtrack to be beautiful and moving, that must be due solely to the wonderful music itself and the excellent interpretation and performance it has been given here.
I'm so glad you took the time to create this work. A brilliant idea, masterfully executed.
You know, I have no idea if this game was or wasn't released in Europe, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't.. and if not, that is such a shame, but there is always time to experience it! Such a kind compliment, sir.. I totally agree that hearing good songs stripped down makes you realize how ingenious they are. Most of these songs are pretty straight forward, but really capture such a mood and emotion. It's the reason this soundtrack stuck with me all these years after having only rented it once as a kid. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment, Vanilla!
I came back for an encore 😄
ReNesance you beautiful bastard you, thank you!
Haha, you are so welcome, and thank YOU for watching
would 100% buy a cover album from you
This is something really special and unique for UA-cam. A gorgeous presentation of your rendition of the music from Legacy of the Wizard with cuts of the gameplay from each area interspliced. You even made a HUD for between songs. Oh my gosh, this is fantastic - of course I want more of other games too! Thank you.
A very sweet compliment, Al.. thank you. I already want to do more, but it'll take time.. but even though this took some time, I loved every minute of putting it together.
You deserve much more recognition for this arrangement... Well Done!!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it!
This is wonderful! Listening with headphones really brings out the richness of the music. Thank you for creating this
Hey, thank you man! Yeah, I really hope most people listening use headphones.. definitely a huge improvement in sound. Thank you for checking it out!
Fantastic job! My love for the game is inextricably tied to the magnificent music in it, and you - good sir - have done a wonderful job of capturing the melodies and harmonies while putting them to the rich sounds of an acoustic instrument! Bravo!
I'm with you. I love this game for many reasons, but the music truly stands out. The fact that the songs can be seen to 'represent' the different characters made this project a must to make in my mind, as I knew it could be presented in an interesting way like this. Thank you for checking it out.
Wow this is so amazing
Beautiful through and through! even the transitions were nice! good to see this from you and hopefully you'll make more like it! great work!
Hey, thank you man! There may be more down the line..
Ren, This is wonderful. You are super talented in many things. I love this game. I played through it for the first time last year and was hooked. Lstening to you play these songs brings me back to last summer playing through it.
Aw man, I love hearing this! Listening to these songs brings me back as well.. only rented it as a kid and had no idea what to do, but the exploration and the music always stuck with me, so when I finally replayed it as an adult and finished it, it was such a special experience. Thank you for checking this out.
Fantastic!!
Well this is just excellent!
Thank you, sir!
Good stuff!
Love this! Great work.
Thank you!
Amazing work my friend!
Thanks, bud!
I had the pleasure of watching it go from 127->128 likes. cheers (yes I am a programmer and understand it's now worth 0 in 8-bit world, but I'm a romantic and like to stay up all night to watch the world restart, and being the 1 to carry that overflow is fine with me)
Stellar
❤ I'm sad I can only like this video once! Awesome job, Ren!
Once is plenty, but I do appreciate the sentiment. Thank you for watching/listening!
Wow! I really enjoyed the way you seperated the melody, Ren! And the accompanying game play too! Great job! (this is LK, btw)
Thank you very much, LK.. and appreciate you checking it out. Glad you enjoyed it :)
wooooot
Wow. these are great, if they ever make a remake, you should audition.
Thanks a lot, and thanks for watching/listening
BRAVO! Faxanadu next? :D
You KNOW that is one of the other ones I'm definitely thinking about...
*ahem*
I can tell you love this music as much as me, but you'er talented enough to convey it. Thank you!.. P.S. Spoilers from the 80's!?!? XD
I sure do, and thank you very much for the compliment and for checking this out. Very glad you enjoyed it!
🕺
Can I download this from bandcamp or something? I love this soundtrack so much!
Sadly I didn't upload it like that anywhere, only here! Thanks for listening, though!
