Yeah, 5 seasons of ‘Rome’ would have been epic. Highly entertaining and short 2 season TV series. Loved it. I’m happy we got ‘Game of Thrones’ though because the early seasons were peak television.
I love this depiction of Caesar, he's so pragmatic and cynical but at the same time has so many noble qualities and strength of character that you admire him.
He's also insufficiently arrogant. Much of what we know comes from his own self serving writings. A master manipulator but also very arrogant. That element never quite comes through. great portrayal otherwise though.
No doubt. James Purefoy's finest role I've seen him in was as Marc Antony. Ciaran Hinds as Caesar is brilliant as well - charismatic and calculating in equal measure, you can easily see why people would believe his speeches.
It's about time the official HBO channel started uploading high quality clips of this amazing, revolutionary show. The best show ever created, in my opinion.
One of the best, for sure. I put the triumvirate of Rome, the Wire, and Deadwood as the top from 2000 to now. Though I, Caligula is still the best ever...
Caesar played the game near perfectly, his only fatal flaws in the matter of ruling were twofold, forgiving too many of his enemies, and assuming he won before the game was truly over, mistakes his nephew and adopted son didn't make. Octavian/Augustus was not as much of a military man in comparison to his uncle, but he took his philosophies when it came to ruling and winning over the people and *perfected* it. In a way, with Augustus winning, Caesar won too, Augustus was his named heir for a reason, Caesar recognized the potential inside of him and knew he would be the perfect scion to carry on his legacy.
Well honestly, who would've thought that enemies, that you not only forgave and absolved of everything, but granted them high possitions in Rome and called them friends - would turn on you, in such a despicable way? He didn't account for massive jealousy, greed and hypocrisy in hacks that killed him. Augustus on the other hand learnt alot from this. He slaughtered all who even dared to raise voice against him. Can't say I blame him after what has happened with Ceasar, I'd probably do the same.
Caesar did bring him with him when he went after Pompey’s sons in Spain. They spent a lot of time together. Octavius made an impression on his uncle with his intelligence and undoubtedly got a first rate education from Caesar on politics and military strategy.
Such a lovely scene. Show the character of Anthony and Caesar. Anthony is a man of war. He wants to fight for its own sake. Caesar is a pragmatist who does want to be the victor over Pompey at least, and a dictator at best. Great writing, great acting.
Cirian Hinds is the best depiction of Caesar IMO. He's very aggressive yet fair. He embodies quite well what I think the writings tell us Julius was like. He wanted power, but also what was best for Rome.
Caesar's actual personality is elusive. If you read modern biographies of his (e.g., Goldsworthy's "Caesar: Life of a Colossus"), it's striking how little we actually know about him. E.g., he showed "clementia" (clemency) to his enemies. But that was partly to differentiate himself from Sulla's bloody purges (still in living memory at that time). Also, the very act of granting clemency was itself a demonstration of power, which was why Cato refused it; he committed suicide, and thereby rejected Caesar's power over him. Caesar was obviously brilliant and charismatic. He was a shrewd political operator. He sought status and power, like any Roman aristocrat. Occasionally, he would ally himself to popular causes. Beyond that, it's hard to say. I'm not disagreeing with you--I too enjoyed Ciaran Hinds' portrayal. It's just that I don't think we know what Caesar was really like. He can be portrayed in many different ways.
What's more funny about that truce Is that should Pompey follow Cicero's advice to meet him in person to formally make peace as Is traditional and the honourable way to make amends with an enemy, everything would be different and maybe nor Pompey or Caesar would have endured painful deaths (Pompey brutally murdered by the egyptians and Caesar horribly betrayed by the one he least expected, Brutus)

No. This show was made in an era of hollywood’s where writers could actually conceive compelling multi-dimensional characters and engaging dialogue. If it were remade today, the characters would either be flat, saintly do-gooders or lampooned villains with no redeeming qualities.
@@MrIStillDontCarein order to do justice to the period they put 20+ years in a couple of episodes skipped lots of super cool things. They should just follow the first man in Rome series from Sulla to The death of Cleopatra or all the way to Jesus like they intended at the start.

Ciaran Hinds definitely nailed the character as Julius Caesar. However he looks more of a Charlemagne than the slim athletic built of Julius Caesar, who had a smaller head and more defined facial features
@@chrisanduncensoredjapan6627 Apparently what was supposed to happen was that Season 2 was just supposed to be about Antony running Rome and would have ended with Antony going to Egypt. The entirety of Season 3 was going to be about Antony in Egypt ending with Augustus' victory at Actium. Season 4 presumably would have been about Augustus' reign which would have led to Season 5 which was supposed to be about the rise of Jesus in Judea (that's why there was that subplot with Timon and his brother). This also of course means that we would have seen the power shift from Augustus to Tiberius since Jesus' ministry took place during Tiberius' reign. This is what the people making the show initially wanted to do
The show did a great job of showing how Caesar’s personality was essential to his own success. He was brilliant both politically and militarily, whereas his contemporaries and successors excelled in one or the other, but not both.

You messed up cancelling this gem.
2 seasons weren't nearly enough for this gem of a series.
Agreed. This was a great show. Unfortunately it came out a couple of years too early….before HBO became a powerhouse.
HBO couldn’t afford this and Game of Thrones so unfortunately this got the axe.

Cicero summing up Caesar, "I fear him as I fear the shinning surface of the sea." Hinds and the writers nailed it.
