Back at last from my impromptu hiatus! This week we're talking about the term "sacking", and it's applications in competitive play. It's such a fundamental part of the game, that even experts could stand to improve when and how they sack.
I'm also on twitter now! Be sure to follow @NathanLikesKFC if you want to know when I'm uploading.
Thanks to blunder for the phrase, "preserving your sacks": / thunderblunder777
Also a quick shoutout to ChessNetwork for the chess footage I used in my video: / chessnetwork

I always just thought sacking was short for sacrificing

It is, the term probably originates from sacrifice decks in MTG

Yeeeeah! I love all your vids man. Even of I already know most of these concepts. The way you break it down for new players is entertaining and easy to understand. Perhaps a video on the move "trick".

TLDR: Sacking is when you know you fucked up but decide it's cool because your win condition is still safe.

Something I think that should be mentioned is that your opponent can also predict your sacks and setup themselves on the same turn. Say your amoonguss is at ~60% HP is up against a fresh dragonite. You want to preserve this amoonguss and you have a banded weavile in the back. You're not sure if weavile can survive a dual wingbeat after stealth rock, so you want to switch it in safely. You have a blaziken that will die to stealth rocks that you can sack, but then instead of going for the dual wingbeat, your opponent's dragonite uses dragon dance. So now you're left with a dead blaziken and a dragonite that can sweep your entire team. (Ice shard doesnt kill with multiscale still up).
The counterplay to this (I think) would be to predict their prediction and use spore on the dragonite.

Monotype randbats have taught me a lot about sacking. When all of your mons and all of your oppoent’s mons have one type in common, it’s pretty common that there‘s one specific mon you have that your opponent will have the hardest time dealing with, and one specific mon of theirs that is best equipped to deal with it. Especially because of the lack of team preview and the fact that you might not know right away what type their team is if it’s a dual-type, being able to identify which mons of yours are going to be putting in the most work, and which ones you’ll have to sack to get those in, is vital.

Sacking can sometimes backfire. The best examples would be for example throwing a paralyzed poke with low health against a Raikou for him to simply substitute on that same turn.
Even if a Scarf Flygon can break the sub with EQ it risks a HP ice.
Personally I would simply sub again just in case it U-turns and crits, in order to pretend that I didn't have hp ice and possible nail that same Flygon later on as he would think it would have hp grass instead.
Same concept applies in case of a set-up move, it can end games.
