they got the soul & heart. if peoples are too stupid to understand how deep that music is, to bad for them, every days we livin' in a crazy person world, full of superficial peoples and stupidity, but every times i'm sitting here, watching, listening to guys like him, i remember that somewere in some places, theres are true peoples.
Music with no chord changes, no solos, no connection between verses, and yet I can listen to it for far longer than the Gods. I just love trance, and if as a musician you’re constantly having to ‘run your mouth’ being impressive- that’s what you take in, someone’s ego, no matter how ‘good’ they are. Anyway, you can’t slip into trance if something is always being clever and having to confirm it’s greatness all the time. I’d rather listen to this all afternoon than joe bossamado or santriniaini. Uh, you know. Peace
I know this is a four year old comment, but I agree totally with everything you said. Give me this over fancy showing off every time. That's not to say that RL wasn't a master of his instrument, but his virtuosity was so understated it came across as simplicity. His music hits straight to the heart and feels like pure Africa. A shamanic sound for the twentieth century and beyond 💗
RL Burnside and Joe *Bonamassa both have something incredible to offer to blues music, I don’t see why someone needs to “own” one to love the other. Love them both! One built the path, the other is helping to keep that path alive!
My all time favorite RL tune right here. Those Kansas boys Moreland & Arbuckle really tear it up big time. Witnessing them break it down with Dustin Arbuckle's blazing harp work is incredible.
ok. makes sense. i always thought it was here comes my train down the line (tracks) that im gonna jump on to leave town. thanks for posting. i appreciate you.
OMG, I implore you to refrain form the negative comments here, this is pure Blues as only the son of Black southern sharecropper could conceive. Many white heroes were far worse men than RL Burnside if you are a lover or a student of the Blues you should know and realize that no white man can compete at this level when it comes to living playing or making the Blues 4 strings and 4 fingers or not this is more passionate and real music than the mainstream corporate America has ever or could ever produce. Be in awe of this raw talent and feel the lords blessing that such men have existed for you to emulate. I can play the notes exactly and verbatim and have done so on a world stage but I can not concave of the music in the way that RL or Cedric Burnside have…you all should count your blessings !
I have this version on a Rough Guide to the Delta Blues album; first blues album I ever bought. It's a bit cleaner than this but it's so good to watch the man play and react to the music and those around him. Thanks to lupine22 for posting this.
@caintuck2 Thanks for reminding me to get back on this, I haven't practiced it for a while. I actually learned it both ways, and to me the nail sounds better on most guitars because its got a high pitch, but I really think he's using his thumb and just has some crazy callous on it. I built mine up but it took a while and I still couldn't get the sound like I wanted. The notes are all correct, and the swing rythm is good, but the volume and timbre of the notes sound a little off.
@caintuck2 Its definitely standard tuning, but this is the only time where the pitch is accurate. I've listened on several other recordings and videos of this same song and he always seems to be sharp or flat. That might be what is causing confusion for people. The rhytm pattern is very tough to duplicate. I've been working on it about a week now and I'm close but still lacking a bit.
from 1978 to 1984 in a couple of clicks@c . Wow@AGE younger-electric :: older-acoustic. so wots goin' on here@peeps?? you can have your gear/everything. RL cant b beat. happy 2011+ to ALL/none

What ever you too don't copy exactly blues musican. Blues is what you are and your feelings. I can play vers rhytm part on open d tuning and standart tuning. Melody I need to think.
Maybe this video will help....The channel is .."ncroson".....Name of video is "burnside slide tuning"...Apparently RL's son Daniel showed this guy the tuning.........Rest in Peace R.L
Likely ...i assume its see my train coming that i can hitch a ride on and get out of this place. A jumper. ..meaning im gonna have to jump on it while its moving down the line...aka railroad tracks. i could be incorrect. but i doubt it.
Delta Blues, he was an innovator of the Great Choctaw and Chickasaw Tribes' music of Mississippi. Blues is not a melody over an African beat. It is pure American through and through.
I'm not sure about blues folklore, but in Northern England the word 'jumper' is a sweater, so I'm guessing it means that - a sweater hanging out on the clothes line to dry?
hey i don't think that is a classical kinda looks like it has a slotted headstock but that doesn't always mean it's a classical guitar, classical guitars have a wider neck...
Isn't this track called 'Jumper On The Line'? Its great, whatever its called. But I prefer the band version from the album 'Burnside on Burnside' - check out Kenny Brown's BRILLIANT slide-guitar solo! Mesmerising!
I'm not sure about open G, to me you can see his fingers on the Em chord and the sound is Em. I dunno I could be wrong, I'm not trying to start yet another dumb youtube flame war. The rhythm is all off the picking pattern and the muting. You can get a decent approximation by just thumb picking down on each eighth note and then using your first finger on the upstrokes where they fall. I think that's basically what he's doing. Then do that for about 30 years until you sound like R.L. :)
no I have no idea what a guitar even looks like, thats why I commented. Its standard because it IS in standard, not open G or E....standard! Its a simple em chord he's playing off.

I listen to this, and I realize how much contemporary music has lost.

It clearly is most folks favourite R.L tune given there is not another track by him with even half the same amount of view's.
he plays the guitar like a Boss...
In blues folklore, a woman would hang her jumper (coat) out on her clothesrack to let her secret lover know that the coast was clear.
ok. makes sense. i always thought it was here comes my train down the line (tracks) that im gonna jump on
to leave town. thanks for posting. i appreciate you.
Thanks
I was thinking this Song was speaking about having sex beyond the hanged clothes,
Some of the first R.L. Burnside videos I saw years ago. Seen more since. But, I still think this 1984 session was some of his best!
Very much agree. Down to earth, real and soulful. Just a man and his guitar. Love it!
My favorite RL song. Love this man. Wish id been born a little earlier dammit.
You know you are the best if you can play and make it look easy, R.L. Burnside proves it.
Great stuff. I think RL is at his best when he play's alone. It grooves so gentle......
Thanks for the vid man or woman......
Simply amazing
Apologies for only now Dec 2022 appreciating true Talent
It needs the baby crying in the background to set it off
Yes....
Pure Legend
Who´s the man? R.L. is the man! He is the one you will never forget.
Hmm haven't heard that one but I really like this one.. The lyrics, rhythym & and all

Negative comments? What by tone deaf rock fans who don't get what BLUES really is and where it came from? This is divine on unparalleled level.

this is standard tuning. he likes spanish open G, but this is straight up. mind-bending genius in any tuning ;-)

Anthony Arena I believe hes referring to a fish on a fishing line.
Delta Blues, he was an innovator of the Great Choctaw and Chickasaw Tribes' music of Mississippi. Blues is not a melody over an African beat. It is pure American through and through.
he's playing an epiphone. cheap steel strings. I'd trade one of my martins for it:)
2 people dont have they jumpers hangin on the line
@ragu0686 i wonder how long it takes before people realise comments like that just aren't funny.
Samuel Neale 5 years later they still haven't realized lol humanity is doomed
well you can't do that with gut strings or the classical set up. and nobody said that epiphone was poor quality--just regular quality:)
what's a jumper? a sweat suit? one half of a set of jumper cables?
+Percy Shaw this song is about fishing!
+Percy Shaw this song is about fishing!

I think it's like a overall like mechanics wear or railway men
A coat.
So is this standard tuning or is it in some open one? O_O
@barker747 good remark @barker747. "its the singer, not the song."
I'm not sure about blues folklore, but in Northern England the word 'jumper' is a sweater, so I'm guessing it means that - a sweater hanging out on the clothes line to dry?
Mal Adams Pretty close... jumper can be another word for overalls
No
No, it's about fishing apparently.
@barker747 Many words are written but, very few will understand the ones you wrote.

what does jumper on the line actually mean?
badboybootz8
It's about running cocaine

Its in Open A same as Poor Black Mattie
Mowaxbro is correct. Sorry, fooboy.
Open G pretty sure.
def not standard do you even play guitar?
nope.
