  • My amaryllis addiction keeps growing and today I'm sharing all the varieties I've ever grown. I'm attempting to rebloom 3 red lion bulbs that were never put outside in the summer and I'll show you what the leaves look like in dormancy. I'm trying to decide if cut amaryllis last longer than stems left on the bulb - what do you think? Do you think my red pearl amaryllis has thrips??

OH.MY.GOODNESS! I think the amaryllis growers owe you a debt of gratitude because if anybody else is like me I think I found a new obsession. I don’t have great luck keeping them from year to year but I have had success growing them indoors for Christmas (zone6b) and I’d love to try some of the more “exotic” varieties. As usual, Danielle, this was a beautiful video full of so much good information. Thank you! 💚

My mom used to leave her Amaryllis in her south facing window year round. They would die back, sprout new leaves, and rebloom each year. Sometimes they’d bloom twice in the year. It wasn’t odd to see her amaryllis blooming away in July or August in the heat of the summer! She would just water them once in awhile, pick the dead leaves off when necessary, and enjoy the blooms when they came.

I have grown mine for 2 years with no forced dormancy and all have rebloomed for me multiple times. The blooms are at random timing but such a surprise each time! Mine actually live under a grow light through out the year and I cut the blooms to bring them throughout the house (all 4 are potted together so it isn’t a pretty arrangement). Actually really thinking about repotting them separately so I don’t have to cut the flowers to enjoy them but have to wait for the right pots. They bloom, grow leaves, the leaves eventually fade, go dormant (bare bulb) for a short time and then a new bloom starts to grow. Since mine live under a grow light they have consistent care - when they are dormant/just a bare bulb I occasionally check the bulb for rotting because I worry about them:) I just bought 3 new varieties for this year but I really love your white/green one! I also need to pay attention so I can label mine as they bloom again.

I live in south Louisiana. Last year I fell in love with amaryllis before I even owned any. I kept seeing them blooming in flower beds around me the past few springs. I happened upon a deal where a guy was getting rid of his and selling them for $1 each. I bought 50 and planted them. Only one bloomed bc they were small bulbs. But now I’m obsessed! I left them in the ground all year and they have gone from walnut size to baseball size in one growing season! I’m hoping to get lots of blooms this spring. I can’t wait!

My favorites are “Nymph”, “Denver” and “Stardust”. I bought a lot of them from my local garden store for less then 3 dollar each after the new year. The ordinary price was 30 dollars each. They are blooming and are gorgeous! I couldn’t believe my luck. From now on I’m only going to buy them when there is a sale because it don’t care when they’re blooming. I’m going to save them for next year.

I'm really appreciating the amount of calm, enthusiastic detail you go into. : ) Re: double vs. original blooms - I really like the single/original blooms. The gorgeous simple, sculptural lines, the color shifts as the flower dives into the center, the clearer canvas for the subtle changes throughout each petal. The doubles are generally too busy for me.

Does anyone else just feel so much better after looking at beautiful blooms? Ah! Just what I needed. I love my Exotic Star amaryllis, it’s just so unusual. I also noticed that cut amaryllis last longer (as long as 10 days). As for the dormancy, I tried so many times to have them rebloom without planting them outside and they just won’t do it. I may try again and will let you know. Great video!!

I got a double Amaryllis this year by mistake. It was mislabeled. The only thing I didn’t like is that they became so tall that broke off one morning. I placed in a vase and they bloomed for over a month. They do last a lot longer in the vase than on the bulb for sure. That produced four stalks. I love it! I love them all tho. All four I got this year were mislabeled. I was disappointed I didn’t get the ones they had on the pictures! Yours are all gorgeous!

As always, I enjoyed this video. I have a passion for Amarylis, too. I have about 12 still blooming. My Dancing Queen was the first to bloom before Christmas. They got very tall with many heavy blooms. They were staked but still broke so I used them as cut flowers. Filled stems like you said and added a cotton ball. They lasted a long time. I really like Samba but if you don’t order early they get sold out. I have given many away as gifts, my clients always love them. My husband really enjoys them , too. I always learn something from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. ❤

Your yellow looks more vanilla/cream with a lime green throat on my screen. I've never had thrips on them, only on gladiola leaves. Lost my entire amaryllis collection (in excess of 20 bulbs) to mealy bugs over 12 years ago after having them outside for the summer. They were in pots during dormancy in a cool basement. By the time I knew there was a problem it was too late. I've had Spartacus and yes, the blooms are more blue red than Minerva, and they were HUGE ! I think cut flowers last longer in a vase due to getting all the water they can use. Don't usually cut them unless they are too weak to stay upright on their own. Unfortunately I do not have any pics to share. I've had some beauties over the years, ever since the 1970s. Only have one at present that I have been nursing since purchased in fall of 2016. Looks like it may finally be large enough to bloom next spring. And she has an offset almost the same size now who also has a baby. I leave them in pots during dormancy and they die down naturally and wake up when ready in cool dark basement. Just remove as much old soil from top and replace with fresh potting mix with slow release fertilizer added. They spend the summers outdoors in a mostly sunny location until frost threatens in fall. Recently ordered a jumbo (40 + cm.) on a preship sale for shipment this fall. It is a red /white striped unnamed variety. Never had a jumbo before so looking forward to getting it. BTW, supposedly if you clip off the ends of stamens and pistol the flowers last longer. Plus there is no mess from falling pollen or sticky drips from pistol !

Yes I have noticed a longer life in the vase opposed to on the plant, maybe an extra week! As to double amaryllis I got a few this year and I am in love, especially the variety Alfresco. I also tried a butterfly variety ‘Papillio’ which was amazing green with purple-red stripes. I tried a wax coated amaryllis just to see what that was about. The variety is ‘Picasso’ and it did indeed bloom with smaller white with red edges flowers.

My amaryllis is big. The bulb is 7" diameter, the flower stem is 4.5 ft (it must be propped up and tied or it will snap in half), the leaves are about 4 ft and the dark red flowers are 6" across. I let mine grow all year long in my house, near the picture window and never cut the leaves. I have had this plant for over 15 years. It blooms once a year around February. It sets in a 16" plastic pot and I water twice a week.

You should create that peach amaryllis with pink edging! As much as you love them I feel like it would be a labor of love. I only recently started crossing a few, but I found the idea of bringing fragrance into these flowers is something I’d like to try. I wonder if belladonna lilies can cross with these? Also, I wonder was your red pearl bulb in perfect health? I don’t think it was red blotch, and unless it was rotting on the inside, I’d have guessed thrips too.

I sprayed and eventually cut off the leaves because they looked so infested. However the bloom stalk was undamaged The current bloom is stunning. This amaryllis which was just described as red , bloomed on one stalk Jan 2021 and again July 2021 . And now has huge (7 -8 ins in diameter) blooms on one stock. So 3 blooms in one year. Not as impressive though as three blooms at once.

I’ve left three amaryllis outside for years. I neglect them and it always surprises me when they bloom. I wanted to bring them back inside this past Christmas, but didn’t know how. And I was worried about pests. Perhaps next Christmas. I can’t believe how many you have, and they’re all so beautiful!

Dawn Dawn, I'm very interested in doing the same. What gardening zone are you in? How far in the dirt did you plant your bulbs? I've heard that outside bulbs get planted all the way to the neck not midway like indoors and how do you deal with rain?

    • @dawndawn6946
      @dawndawn6946 2 роки тому

@@DS-rf7si They’re in big pots. I did plant them up to their necks, though. Since they always come back, I was hesitant to disturb them in any way. I am in zone 8a.

This was my first year growing Amaryllis to break up the winter drab. I grew Red Lion and Minerva and a double pink and white variety. They all bloomed beautifully and I have one last bloom stalk of the Minerva that is about to bloom. I will def cut the stalk so it lasts longer since its our last bit of blooms before Spring. Wahhh aha

I love love Red Pearl!!! My husband even commented on how beautiful it was. Plus Magical Touch is gorgeous too! I had two Magical Touch and one is still blooming and it is it’s 4th stalk! As for your bulb with thrips.....I think you need to get rid of it before they spread to your other bulbs. I would also call the company that you purchased it from. They should send you a replacement. I googled “ thrip damage on amaryllis” and Google brought up all kinds of info plus pictures of amaryllis with thrips. They said to use blue sticky traps or pyrethrin spray. I personally would throw it away to keep it from spreading to my other bulbs. Love this video! If you love pink amaryllis...you need to grow “ Pink Surprise” it sent up two stalks at the same time with huge deep pink flowers! Then a third stalk later on.....simply gorgeous!

Hi! I checked my book, Amaryllis by Starr Ockenga, and she mentioned thrips as a pest. She says to spray with horticultural soap. Or your own solution if 1 part alcohol to 2 parts water. It can damage the surface of the flower petal though. Also, Terracotta Star has been a favorite of mine. Last year I had a bulb come down with Red Blotch so I had to trash it sadly. But my new one has had 6 flowers for each of 3 stalks. Last year my bulb had 4 stalks. We’ll see if this bulb does the same. Want that Yellow Star ⭐️!!!

I love my amaryllis and have done the basement method after they bloom and I have had them in my window sill for several months with just the leaves. One must have space to do all this. I tire of the leaves and want something else. I also have found that the blooms will weep a sticky substance and you have to be careful where you place your bulbs because the substance can damage wooden surfaces. After trying to save the bulbs after they bloom for me they have bloomed again but with not as much vigor maybe only one stalk. I finally decided that I would treat my bulbs like an annual and buy new ones each year.

This is my 3rd year of reblooming Appleblossom. In past years it has produced multiple bloom stalks but this year only one, though that one is extremely tall and absolutely beautiful! I have never placed it outside in the summer --- it remains on my SE windowsill until I put it into dormancy in my basement just like you've shown in this video - leaving the leaves to die back naturally. My timing is off though because I've never had it bloom at Christmas -- it always blooms in late January for me :)!

Just saw your program for first time. I have a amaryllis that was my mother in laws . I’ve had it for over 40 years now and it’s in my flower bed, and is a big cluster of them. I will look them up to find the variety. They are so healthy in my flower bed facing north. I live in the upstate of S. Carolina.I don’t t know it’s name, but could send you a photo of it if you’d like. There must be way over a dozen stems at least. I am also overwintering 3 pots of 3 bulbs right now for my first time indoors. They may be a bit late blooming for the holidays sad to say. So I’m just starting out to get on with indoor growing of them. I don’t remember the color of them as I planted it about 15 years ago, but never bloomed after moving outside after the holidays and forgot it was there. I accident,y planted a gardenia plant there in the same place and noticed it kept multiplying, but no blooms. So this year I dug them up to put them in a dark room. M.

I want to say, I kept amaryllis indoors all year round and they do just fine. As long as they are getting at least a few hours of direct sun each day (more sun means more flowers) and are given a good amount of TLC, they should rebloom no problem. I never really needed to force dormancy on my amaryllis as every November or December they will drop their leaves only to bloom again in February or March. The process is not very complicated esp if you don’t need amaryllis to bloom during Christmas.

I have a Hippeastrum Picotee it’s white with a red edge it’s slowly starting to bloom. I’m a bit concerned the leaves are not popping out. This is my first amaryllis and the bulb it was misplaced for a couple months. 😅 It was planted it very late around Christmas. I hope I didn’t harm it by letting it it very dry as a bulb. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

It sounds like your bulb will be just fine - It's pretty amazing, but they are programmed how to do their thing with very little help from us! Some of my bulbs will grow leaves first and others start with bloom stalks and their leaves come later. Just cut the spent bloom stalks off when they are done with their show, and let the leaves power the bulb for the next stalk or maybe even next yr? Oh, and I've learned to not overwater! I've found that weekly bottom watering just enough to keep the bulb roots from drying out but not keeping the top soil moist works best for my home - that bulb already has most of what it need to bloom and make leaves.

I have never put my amaryllis outside! I had never heard of that as an option until this past summer, when I saw my friend's amaryllis on his deck. I was actually thinking of trying it for the first time this year! I had a bunch of them for years, and they would always re-bloom. Then they stopped re-blooming for a bunch of years. What I didn't realize was that they were the tiny bulb kind ~ purchased after Christmas from a chain store. I didn't know that the larger the bulb, the more energy they could store. I did everything I could to make those re-bloom, but after 5 years, I gave up. Now I have new and much larger bulbs!! I can see the difference in flower size already, plus the extra stalks that I have gotten. I will definitely invest in some of the varieties you mentioned in this video. Now my only question is where am I going to put them????!!!! LOL - I'm running out of space!!!

Also would appreciate your experience with buying the bulbs. Went to Longfield Gardens site but they mostly had Holland varieties. Do you have a reliable source for Peru and/or South Africa varieties. Thank you so much!1

Thank You for sharing gour different varieties... love the specific info.
I grew a number of res pearl this year and gave all for gifts except one I kept and I agree its definitely the most beautiful red. I would call it burgundy red I think.
I will be very curious to see if the bulbs you kept inside and are now dormant get flowers once you wake them up:)
My mother in law has never been able to get them to bloom again ( she's always left them on a window inside the house), granted she didn't put them into dormancy so I wait with anticipation to see what happens with them.
If they do bloom again I would love to know what direction the window they were in is facing. I think this could make a huge difference.
I had one last year that finished blooming and I didn't know they should be put outside so it stayed in an east window which is huge and many of my house plants do well on this window sill wall.
Long story, I put it into dormancy and brought it back out and it is slowly waking up but I'm not certain yet if it will flower or just give leaves.
This particular amaryllis also put out three babies so thats exciting but will wait to see if it flowers.
Love to you sweet sister, just love your videos.
Trying to keep warm in Ontario,Canada :)

In the UK our summers aren't warm enough for most amaryllis varieties to be able to put them outside. This time I've left mine on the window sill all year round. I'm waiting for them to come out of dormancy, they started dying back naturally so I stopped watering. I have lost track of when that was 😅
I started with 1 bulb 2 years ago and that 1 bulb has created 3 new bulbs. So I've just repotted and put the 3 new bulbs together in one pot.
I can't wait to see what happens when they come out of dormancy.
Can you do a video about offset bulbs and how long it can take them to flower etc.
    Love your videos 😊
