“In Greek mythology Amaryllis was a lovesick shepherdess who stood at the door of her intended every night piercing her heart with a golden arrow. From her wounds sprung an exquisite flower.
Now that’s what I call the hard way to grow these gorgeous blooms!”

I had Amaryllis in pots for years. I started with a purchased bulb and after the standard bloom I put it into a large container pot and fed it with a weak fertilizer. I kept it near a window until the weather warmed up past our hard frost date and then moved the pot outside into a dappled sun location for the entire summer. Kept it moist and the green leaves grew like crazy. That fall I would move the pot inside and allow the pot to dry out for a bit. Then in the winter I would once more move it into the light and start watering. They bloomed AND multiplied for years, with only occasional re-potting. Two years ago I made the mistake of failing to move the pots in before the freeze got my bulbs. Last winter was sad. This year I am starting over with a new purchased bulb. It just bloomed yesterday. I hope it is the first of many more years together.
I think planting bulbs like this renews the child-like wonder in all of us. It's always exciting. Thanks for sharing.
I purchased 3 dozen Ziva paperwhites this holiday season and they bloomed beautifully. Fragrance was wonderful. They look wonderful for Christmas and add to the magic of the holidays. So easy to grow. These are my holiday flowers. Love them.
Foe the bulbs that are in wax, after it is done blooming just peel the wax off [it will peel off easily] and then pot it up.
Awesome video. Thank you. I appreciate the Greek Mythological story around the Amaryllis. Thank you. Where can I purchase the very fragrant Paperwhites you mention in the beginning of the video? I plan to be grow more Amaryllis now that I see and understand how easy it is to bring beauty into my apartment through growing these lovely flowers. I love Paperwhites Thank you so much.
Your daffodils are a gift that keeps on giving, no better bang for your buck!
Love your videos! I live in Upstate NY and we are in the "brown" season, so I am going to get some of these and plant them immediately - I NEED some color and fragrance!!!
Yes, I couldn’t live without this glorious activity. Not only the child in all of us gets nourish, the creativity emerges giving our soul a precious purpose. Thank you kindly.
This year I did one container with 6-8 paperwhites and two seperate pots with very large amaryllis bulbs of two different colours. I saw the prewaxed bulbs which which far more expensive, and too, wondered how they would do.
Mr. Smith, this year I bought 2 amarilys covered with parafin , and they bloomed perfectly well, I didn’t even had to water them.
Thanks for all your great informative and delightful videos!
I got a wax bulb last december and I decided to remove all the wax and even tho the bulbs roots were cut it started to produce new roots so I let it dry out and in about 2 months it started to grow, even when it was put away in the dark. so now I have the green leaves growing and I guess I will see what happens to it. I was told it was a one time bulb... so I think they were wrong about it
I thought I was too late to the party but I see it doesn't matter one bit. Here in the N.E. I need all the help I can get. Thanks.😊
The wax covering needs to be removed after blooming, and either potted or put into the landscape (if warm enough). Be sure to NOT cut off any leaves the bulb produces. The leaves are recharging the bulbs to bloom again.
Dear mr. SMITH I BOUGHT a white amaryllis which has bloomed and after i cut the wilted blooms its growing the leaves. The leaves are already 15 inches high. The pot its potted in is a basic 6inch pot. What do i do , shaĺ i repot it in a bigger pot? Along with this i bought lots of paper whites. I made the mistake of putting them in a dark cupboard they rooted and i lut them on my kitchen windowsill that has no direct sun. They started growing but very very slowly. The growth is still abkut an inch after abkut 3 weeks. What is happening . I live in Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. I have an appartment with a balcony facing west but open on the north side . In this period we have very windy weather and temp are from 17 to 9 degrees celsius .
I purchased 5 amaryllis bulbs in wax from Lowes. I put them glass vases with a little bit of moss and rocks on the bottom and gave them as Christmas gifts. The tag on them stated " I have all I need in the wax covering. Just place me in a nice sunny window and watch me bloom". My friends and family loved them. They got so excited to see the huge flowers that bloomed. I made this gift for under $25 they were $50 on gardeners supply website.
I love this plant!! I just purchased the white one. It is absolutely beautiful.
How lovely. I had never heard of paperwhites until this year. I was at the garden center and saw a bin of loose bulbs for $1.60 each. I bought one and came to this video to find out how to care for it
Floridian zone 9b here. I'm growing amaryllis for the first time inside and outside. Lovely beautiful flowers just like you said.
nice arrangment always planting flower but not sucsess to bring all when is moving the house or give it away.
Very informative. Cooler room slows the growth and warmer room speeds up. :)
Yes! I bought a Paperwhite. Put it in the kitchen by a lamp. It got to over 2 ft. Tall. It was gorgeous.
Thank you so much, this was very helpful. Happy Holidays
My waxed bulb is beautiful! Three flowers on one very strong stalk and another stalk budding.
Amaryllis are such beautiful flowers.I have a couple of them planted in pots. Thanks for sharing.👍🌺
How do we keep paperwhite bulbs for next year?
My paper white is about 29" tall but still has not bloomed
I plant mine in the garden and they come back and bloom in May. Love them!
Mine come back in June on the south side of the house and never on the west side. 😉
Thank you for spreading your knowledge about forcing bulbs. The amaryllis is so beautiful. I’ve always wanted to try growing them but I was afraid I would not make it turn into a beautiful flower. You make it look simple. I might have to give a try for both of the bulbs. Nothing like having flowers in the winter months!
Gosh those paperwhites will rot in that much water
you peel off the wax and it grows roots..
I live in Zone 3A, so adapt to my area. Paper-whites are blooming now...Amaryllis are still in the growing up process. Love watching them as they grow & bloom in my living room. The Amaryllis is strictly an inside flower in my area. Even though this vid is 2 yrs old, the info is very relevant today. TY
WHAT? You don’t celebrate all twelve days of Christmas? Thought, for sure, you would’ve.
Where did you buy the glass vase ?
I’m doing this today!
Hi Allen, I just found your u tube link. it would help if we knew what zone your in. I know these are mostly grown as house plants, but I live in zone 8B and can thankfully grow most outside. Love your site and fantastic information
Great video, great channel!
Please, a question: we need to use fertilizer when used only water and not soil?
Thank you!
Thank You for sharing! Happy New Year and Happy Growing to everyone!🌺🌼🌻🌺🌹🏵💮🌸💐🌷🌱
Hi I really like this video, I was wondering can I mix amaryllis with paper Whits in the same pot say have the amaryllis in the middle and place paper whites around it close to the edge of the pot, greatings from England 🙂
What kind of water are you using tapwater are you using like bottled water would you please let me know because I got me a paper white that was in one of the A glass container like you have there but it could use some more watery and I don't know what kind of water to put in the tapwater or is there a water I need to go by appreciated if you please let me know and thank you very much for sharing your video
Really enjoyed this video. I always learn something new when I watch. Happy New Year and God Bless.
Will they bloom again? Mine have bloomed. I took the wax off and put in water???
😎
I’m not sure what I did wrong. I bought paperwhites bulbs and planted them in pots the way I was instructed the person at the nursery where I bought them. They grew so fast and so tall. They were about 2 feet tall the I started to get buds but the leaves started to drupe until even the buds folded over too. They looked so bad that I trimmed them and stuck them outside. I had hoped for a nice table center piece. Please let me know what I did wrong and if I can save them now even for next year.
Ariel paperwhite is suppose to be a little shorter variety, from 'Easy to Grow Bulbs'.
🤔 were they getting plenty of water? Almost can’t get them too much.
I Love flowers ❣️, thanks for sharing
So, our sponsors for today's video are: everything thats have atoms.
thanks for inspiring. I'll try some this winter
I have a lot of paper whites out in my garden currently blooming, but I haven’t tried to grow them indoors. Thank you for the information.
While I was out in my garden today I noticed my tulips starting to emerge. Are you having this happen also? Is this something to be concerned about with it being early January? I also live in a zone 8a.
Amber Wilkinson frequently happens with my tulips too. They will be just fine. Thanks for watching. 💚
Where does one find those clear bulb vases?
This is my first year planting multiple amaryllis. I’m loving having these beautiful blooms in my home. Watching them grow so quickly has been fascinating!
THANKS SO MUCH ALLEN.
Which paperwhites smell good? The ones I have tried smell really bad.
Inball Israeli paperwhites are only lightly fragranced, according to the description. I bought three types from 'Easy to Grow Bulbs' this year to try some different paperwhites and see if I prefer any of them better than the Ziva paperwhites that Allen spoke about in this video today.
Thanks Marla, I will add that name to my notes for next year. Good luck with the new ones you are trying.
Love your videos Allen!!!
Do you fertilize the water?
Nope you don't have to!
I love it😃😃😃😃😃😃
Once the wax bulbs flower they cannot flower again because the basil plate was removed before application of wax. Each wax bulb bloomed on short stocks. Many had two stocks 3 blooms per stock with 6 small 2-3” flowers. The wax bulb shrinks and behind to rots as the blooming sequence begins. Some of the wax bulbs can be hung upside down as decorations on trees or wreaths as they bloom . The big disappointment was all the wax bulbs were all the same red orange color blooms purchased from different resources.
Kill the background music would you hard to hear
Travelin Thru ?? There is only music on the very beginning.
Hi love seeing you again l have bulbs too started over mine got old and l didn't keep right first of all so doing again love them by way paperwites l plant in flower bed when can and every spring comes up smells good because after xmas not sure yet grow again in pot or water so l bury in ground they multiply too lovely. Thanks 😊
Hi! I started forcing paper whites 2 weeks ago on stones, and added water like you said, however they got very moldy and when I grabbed one to see it it was squishy and even though they started growing they looked brown. So I threw them away because they didn’t look healthy. I’m sad 😞
Thank you and God bless you.
