What makes the Voicework of Darktide so good?

- Today we delve into the shallow depths of Frips mind and hear what he has to say about his favourite warhammer 40k yap simulator.
Guess who has barely made a dent in the Rogue trader storyline despite promising himself that he'd finish 1 playthrough before the next dlc. :)
So many beloved games dropping updates in June. Drg might have to battle it out with the darktide skulls event news for which game gets featured next
Thanks for watching folks
Wonderful video Frip, and informative! Appreciate you taking a dive into our lil’ part of the game, Pilgrim!
My favorite line in the game is when Hadron tells you to make “no attempt at subtlety” in killing a heretic boss, pauses momentarily, then says “I’m sorry I have no idea why I said that to you, of all people.”
Morrow: "do it quiet like.
Nevermind"
I like it when she permits us a 5 second celebration before extraction
My favorite voice line is ogryn I forgot which one and cutthroat veteran.
Ogryn says "ogryn is abhuman what's that mean" and veteran barged in says "It means ABSOLUTELY HUMAN" and 2 second pause later says "I promise"
Think brawler’s the one you mean, same lug who voiced our favorite dwarf Bardin
@@rastanamag59 Brawler Ogryn sounds very similar to Bardin, but it's a different VA. Bardin's VA only voices Sir Melk in Darktide.
"MAGNIFICENT EMPEROR GRANT ME HATRED!" is such a great line
THE GUARD NEVER SURRENDERS!!!
I like the conversation with Bully Ogryn and the male Seer Psyker:
Ogryn: "Think i got a hole in my boot."
Psyker:"Why of course you do! However would you put it on?"
Ogryn:"I mean another hole, letting in water!"
Psyker:"Well, why didn't you say so?!"
One of my favorite hidden depths is with the bodyguard ogryn, for as many times he tells others to not ask questions and just follow orders he interestingly takes it on himself to ask why a Valkyrie came in on fire with the crew screaming mad. Makes me wonder if at some point he got punished for trying to be smarter then his station.
The thing about Ogryns is that they don't have much brain, but they make great use of it. The bodyguard is learning to think, and, for that matter, learn.
Bodyguard is almost frighteningly intelligent for an ogryn. And he doesn't even have the bonehead implant yet.
@@thebreadbringer it may be a stretch but he may be like a "below low" level psyker, cause ogryn psykers (yes they became a thing in lore after Psychic Awakening) gain intellect enough to even READ and WRITE and speak coherently, but of course with the whole added issue of being a psyker. But what if ogryn got like smallest bit of psyker power? I think thats what happened.
@@MrVlad12340 next update reveal, ogryn spark 'ead?
@MrVlad12340 for future explanation in case someone tries to correct you, there is examples of ogryn psykers in books. In Prophet of the WAAAGH, the inquisitor questioning Makari has a telepath psyker ogryn with them.
"SAR, I'D LIKE TO REPORT THAT WE HAVE NOT BIN AMBUSHED SAH" "Yeh? Do let me know if that changes" "YES SAH, I WON'T LET THE AMBUSH TAKE YA BY SUPRISE SAH"
I really like it when Morrow has superiors on the call. I was chuckling endlessly when there was a group of stupid stuck up nobles observing the mission and I can almost hear him biting his tongue as he get more frustrated with them or when Ranik turns up and he's all "Can I help you sir" "No, I'm just here to observer" "Oh thank you sir, nothing helps a mission run smoothly like having the boss breathing down your neck . . . sir"
Love the voices of all the dreg enemies, as well as the scab bomber, flamer, and bruiser
"Someone called for a Web-gun" always makes me silently reply No, I didn't. :D
I love the dreg gunner, he screams like a crazy priest, MUTASHFAR NUUUUUURRRRRGLLEEEEEEEEE
"Burn loyalist scum" - Scab Flamer
"No more bad dog..."
"bye bye flamer"
Personally, tox flamer has my favorite line. "Death, renewal, fire. Death, renewal, fire! DEATH, RENEWAL, FIRE!"
I, quite literally, run Shout Spam Veteran just so I can hear my very angry Cadian scream about his homeworld and vengance before laying into the enemy with a chainsword from his homeworld.
It is...oddly cathartic.
Emperor bless you, Cutthroat VA, whoever you might be, because you understand what those of us who play Veteran WANT.
i like it when the loosecannon tries to dessert but the ogryn is like "no bad joke boss"
I just love how all the regets a huge tsunderes for eachother, even cadian vet shows some affection sometimes. Even in the grimdark there is a little spark of humanity still shining.
Yeah, people usually forget that this guys are still human
Wh40 is no more than a joke that takes seriousness on itself but people only know to yell "HAPPYNESS?!?!?! ON MY GRIMDARK?!?!??! WH FELL OFF"
This was originally going to be a showcase of my favourite personalities and voicelines in Darktide but I realised halfway through that they were all bloomin' great and that it would take way too long. The resulting vid is an abominable attempt to compromise and talk about how well it all fits together so enioy :D
Speaking to an Ogryn is the exact same as speaking to a customer as a retail worker.
My favorite is when my Zealot starts talking about how he sees the other teammates as more of a family "-a charity case of course, but a family nonetheless." :)
Gutter's nice... Always lotsa nice, warm filth to sleep on!
"NOT ONE STEP DOWN" - he yelled, making everyone invincible by the sheer power of his voice
I really like the male savants voicelines. The savant in general suprised me. I at first thought it was gonna be a whiny moralist. But im glad they framed it more as the groups moral anchor while still having a hint of madness psykers are known for.
I especially love his scryers voice lines.
*LET THE WARP SPEAK!!*
man cutthroat vet is my fav va, shouting at teammates and reviving them seems to be lore accurate
Local Cadian so goddamn angry about loosing his planet he wont let his team die and fail the mission.
0:56 the amount the snipers in this one particular area plus the beast of Nurgle it’s stressing me out like crazy!
I really love male Loose Cannon. I'd like to think he is the one who binds the rejects together besides the ogryns.
"Show me that ugly grin..."
Loose Cannon literally when the horde spawns "WOOHOO, HEEHEE"
"Praxis... er.. what was it, 20... SNIPER!!!"
The lady that dose the ''EMPEROR GUIDE MY HAND'' line gives me unironic chills every time, usually It feels like a lot of women in games are a bit try hard in how they talk but by the god emperor I can *FEEL* the steel and fire in her heart when she shouts that line.
It's even better when you use it to propel yourself into a mob on enemies.
That line has just the right amounts of faith and desperation.
My favorite line is the ogryn saying that hadron is watching him only for her to voice in over the vix calling him paranoid. Even if she isnt the handler for that mission
On the topic of voicelines, my Darktide wishlist consists of the backstory you pick generating a blacklist and whitelist of dialogue options your character can/can't speak (aka, blacklisting Bully Ogryn's "Puny Cadia" lines when responding to the "Eye of Terror" conversation if he lived on Cadia, whitelisting lines of Loose Cannon Veteran getting codenames of enemies and items correct if you picked Progena or Elite Formation, etc.)
Everyone knows the best voiceline is the Ogryn trying to say Medicae "Medi-Medicici-Medidicici-Medi" LMFAOOO
The Cutthroat is probably one of the most deep characters in the game.
Despite being a major asshole on the surface, hearing a lot of lines generally lets you come to the conclusion that the guy does care about his companions and tries to toughen them up through Cadian pattern tough love. He always advises caution, betterment, and focus even if he delivers them as insults.
Furthermore, his small lines also indicate his veterancy as well. For instance, instead of using codes all the time like the professional, he’ll often just scream the enemy type if they’re incredibly dangerous (like snipers). Not to mention his massive death wish from losing Cadia.
He absolutely hates Psykers though, with exception of the Savant due to his professionalism.
He do like his Ogryns though.
"Good, big man, good!"
A big part I love Darktide's voicework over Vermintide is just the interaction between the characters are so much more pleasant and fun. With Vermintide everyone was such a passive aggressive asshole to each other except for the Dwarf being the only laid back one.
Medici...Medicimeci...Mecidi...Meci...Medicae
Can I also add that I find Hestia, Melk and Hadron adorable in their most excellent voicelines too? I've noted that Melk has a soft spot for Ogryns but is toxic to everyone else, especially Zealots that he advices to remember to hold the weapons the right way around, while Hestia obviously being a Zealot herself, gives great and inspiring words to Zealots and despises at least veterans for not being true believers. The best thing is when they start to argue across the hallway with each other. LOL
Hadron is aloof and comes off at first as rather arrogant, but helps anyone she can nonetheless.
These are all characters that brighten your visit to the Morningstar.
I don't know about Hestia yet, but Melk's interactions with you are determined by your personality choice, not your class. Each class has a personality he likes, one he doesn't, and one he is ambivalent toward.
I am a Hadron fanboy. I'd naturally have a biased toward the tech Priest in the group but Hadron balances those sassy, condescending remarks with some begrudging respect on board the Mourningstar. At least she's not lobbying to have you turned into a servitor by time you've finally ranked up your character. 🤣
Melk seems to be very fond of Psykers
I like the little slip ups some characters can make, revealing that they actually do care about you, at least a little bit more than they let on. Even the mission handlers, usually adamant of the "You're disposable and if you die I won't really care" approach can show some empathy.
Morrow in particular has a few different lines, for example he usually is the one to tell Rejects about new happenings and his personal advice such as telling them to be extra careful around Commisar Dukane, in which he even acknowledges the Rejects backtalking him and giving him shit sometimes, saying that he lets us get away with it while warning us that Dukane will immediately kill us if we try to pull something like that. Besides that, he seems to give a lot more praise compared to other handlers, telling the team they did a good job, that he "couldn't ask for a better result", etc, while also telling them to be careful and come back alive in pre-mission briefings.
Similarly, in Grim Protocols update, an almost guaranteed type of banter between Zola and Rannick is her being angry that Rannick is still going around with a light "Eh if they die who gives a shit" attitude, not just because of completing the mission, she seems to genuinely care about the well-being of you and the other strike team members. Besides that, there are a couple of conversations that involve Rejects mentioning a positive conversation with Zola, such as one of the Psykers asking the group if they think that Psyker can resist daemonic possession, mentioning that Zola reassured them that they can.
Besides empathy, I also rather like when the Zealot's have slip-ups in their usual stalwart behavior, getting flustered or confused at other rejects, or just willing to open up a little. An example I like is one of the Veteran + Zealot bonding conversations, which amounts to Veteran saying that they're aware of Zealot swearing a lot and shouting (moreso than usual) when they think they're alone, to which the Zealot admits they do it cause it helps calm and de-stress themselves, Veteran says they don't mind and that the Zealot can do it all they want within earshot, and the Zealot sheepishly says that "they'll think about it" with an obvious implication of thankfulness.
That "No! I'm right here!" at the end really caught me off guard xD I also got 800+ hours in game and haven't heard that one before. Sad downside of having constantly the same strike team line-up with your friends is that you miss gems like that due to same old personalities involved. Luckily FS added the option to change personality so I can mix things up at least a little from time to time.
"CLOSE! KILL! AND DO IT AGAIN!" gets me goosebumps every time
Even though I like the Professional, I always find myself coming back to the male Cadian, and I have to use the Cadian armor sets for maximum immersion. The VA for the male Cutthroat is arguably *the* best in the game (although I may be biased as someone who has closing in on 10,000 points of Astra Militarum on the table and reads all the Guard books.) When using Voice of Command for the first time and he yells "FOR CREEEEED!" or "GIVE 'EM THE OL' KASRKIN DOUBLE TAP!", it was the hypest thing in the game. Theres also a charming moment between the Enforcer psyker and the Cadian that I've yet to replicate where the Psyker catches him smiling and the Cadian tries to deny it in an embarrassed way.
THIS.
I remember a conversation between a Cadian-born Veteran and a non-Cadian born having an argument over Cadia that turned out to be pretty hilarious.
I love the" If you can breath, you can kill!" Hell, most of the shout have so much anger/spite in them; Bitter, torn and knowing only his duty
@@Tremadog102 "And just like Cadia, you will fail us in the end."- none Cadian Vet giving out the worse burns since the Salamanders.
He is not only fantastically voice acted, he is fantastically written. There's an entire character journey in just his tone of voice.
Sure, he hates the enemy with all his being. And he leans fully into that, because the Imperium encourages, praises, practically enforces that. It's the right kind of hatred.
But that most certainly is not all he hates. He also hates everyone else, a hatred that is thinly veiled by warnings that he's watching for traitors and turncoats. He feels betrayed, let down, like all the millennia of blood and sacrifice of his home was not honored by the Imperium at large, and they failed to aid Cadia enough in her hour of need.
And though he will never, EVER admit it, even to himself, he probably hates the Emperor deep inside. For if the God Emperor is so great, how could he let this happen? Is he a fraud? Does he just not care about us? Have I been lied to all this time? Of course he knows these thoughts he can't help himself from having are absolute blasphemy and faithlessness, which is one of the many reasons for his last hatred:
He hates himself. Of course he does. He feels he failed everyone. He lost. And he still lives. He feels it's all his fault. And here is, doubting the Emperor in his mind, which only contributes to his self loathing.
So to cope, he directs every ounce of that rancid, bitter rage on the enemy, because that's where it should go...but there's so much that it spills over onto his teammates, his comrades, and himself.
I can hear this entire story just from the tone of his voice.
I also really like the lines the characters say when they slay special, elite and boss enemies. It's like mini-celebrations of the kill they made and it makes it feel like the characters are active in what's happening in the gameplay
One cool thing I noticed was that, when you're low level, the rejects are much more rude to each other. But as you level up, the game will use more amicable voice lines.
I distinctly remember the veteran using "I gotta do everything myself" type lines at low level, and insulting the usefulness of the other classes, but later this basically stops happening entirely.
Its also just cathartic playing characters that have that "you've come here to DIE" type attitudes. Its that power through a mix of sheer will and rage that makes it feel so good to activate a skill, have your character yell something badass and then cut your foes to pieces that few other games can offer.
The voice lines also just help fulfull the class fantasy so perfectly.
Veterans yell codes, inspire, but also bring that fatalist normal man in hell vibe. Much more casual about The Emperor and his worship, but not enough to get called a heretic
Zealots never shut up cause charging also causes voice lines, even during combat, bringing that literal righteous fury at all times, even when other classes are silent during combat beyond "reloading" and such
Psykers are always talking about weird or random shit, while occasionally letting it slip during combat showing the stresses of using psyker powers in actual combat.
Ogryns are weird cause they're smarter than they're supposed to canonically be, but also have that amusing "simple answer to a complex problem" approach both in combat and in conversation.
Often used as foils for exposition dumps, but also great conversations like My Ogryn trying to share his Nosh with a Veteran. A sign of great respect and trust given how Ogryn treat food. Big, Lovable oafs who always got your back.
I'd happily watch "Making of" for 40k games in general and Darktide Voice Actors in particular. Empra-sent.
Make it happen, Warhammer+, y'all clearly need ideas for content...
The Rejects have voicelines on the Mourningstar as well, though these are almost always triggered by announcements over the Vox. One of my favorite lines is when the shipmistress announces that due to supply limitations, everyone will be going on 3/4th rations. If there is an Ogryn in your instance of the Mourningstar, you'll hear them yell "Grut me! This is bad!" 😂
My two favourites are the Scottish zealot and the Cadian veteran. One is an angry yet comedic shakespearian man with my favourite voice line in the game “Blood for the Emperor skulls for the golden throne” being said with so much emphasis you can hear-it echo it makes me zealous for a fictional emperor.
The other is the angriest soldier to step foot on a battlefield with every voice line being about heretic annihilation with voice lines such as “Not one step back” and “ I wanna hear them scream”
That first line is a sign of first stages of khornate corruption that afflict the fanatic😅
@@piotrkozowski2180 I know brotha but it still hits hard when said in the name of the emperor
I chose the Fanatic for my Zealot and she's proper insane. It's such good voice acting. Nothing compares to the Male Cutthroat. I use the ability and I feel chastised at the sheer anger. The VA put everything into those ☠️
"MAGNIFICENT EMPEROR GRANT ME HATRED"
These voicelines are just amazing, they are not just well scripted but also well voiced. You can learn many details of the backlore during the game even though they can be clouded among the sounds of gunfire and battlecries. But still they are pretty good and important part of the game, Games Workshop really nails it when it comes to voicelines.
James Alexander's male zealot gives me goosebumps every time he praises the Emperor
🙏🙏🙏🕯️💀🕯️🙏🙏🙏
This really is what keeps me coming back. The voice line casino game. The zombie punching minigame tacked on is also pretty good.
The voice but also the sound design of this game is so brillant ! All the sound indicate to players certain type of attack etc. I love DARKTIDE
They nailed every aspect of the characters and voice acting.
The end is great xDDD "No! Iam right here" XD
The voicelines and the music are a big thing in Draktide.
Next to the conversations between the rejects, i like the speech of the 6th Mobean commander in the carneval trailer a lot!! Every time i hear it, shivers runs my body. Another example of the great efford they put into it.
my entire body vibrated when i saw all those sniper lasers
this games got me by the balls
Warhammer is such an amazing game, the voice acting, the music, the art and also even taking time to look at the walls. So much content but gets drowned out in the mania of the game.
I think my favorite aspect of the voices is how they change based off your background choices. Playing around with it can make vibes from the same personality.
Wait, really? Never noticed that...
Everything the cutthroat veteran says is amazing. I swear he must have killed his voice recording his lines.
this is probably personal bias based on the composition of my friend group's characters, but my favorite convo I've heard is between the Bully ogryn and the Savant psyker. the way the Savant genuinely cares for the ogryn characters and emphasizes how they are to be treated with respect just like anyone else really shines through when the Savant enthusiastically asks the Bully what he wants to do to learn and grow as a person, and when the Bully asks to learn how to read the Savant is absolutely 100% down to do it with zero hesitation.
sliding in genji when talking about ability shouts was a nice bit of work there
with all this amazing voice work, the fact that you can't "press V to shout 'for the emperor!!!!" is straight up insulting.
putting those low health beasts of nurgle on the screen was a brilliant move, its like getting taunted by a mobile game ad
"Violence!...NOW!!!"
Sofani has a line where she talks about how Melk has a secret squad scrounging around in the underhives
Sprial Knights soundtrack in a Darktide video? Life can be sweet after all
Rogue Trader music at the end. Some great voices in that game tol
Damn, was that a clip from a Kitty0706 Gmod vid. . ?
I feel old now, and sad.
Great video overall, absolutley love they voices in Darktide.
I hear and somewhat understand the criticism that Darktide doesn't have any named/original characters like Vermintide or other CO-OP games like Left 4 Dead or Cod Zombies, and say that beacuse of that they lack any character. But personally I have to disagree since the voice actors put their heart and soul into their lines. They have this perfect balance of having banter between each other so that the missions aren't dead but just vague enough so that people (with the game's customization) can make their own original character.
I myself could spend hour just personalizing my characters or even try to add characters that I have made before into the game.
I’d say it’s because the voices are of believable personalities but not just real world personalities tacked on to a setting where they’d never exist
My zealot and my buddies ogryn had a funny exchange which was his ogryn saying that if anyone killed my character he would rip there arms off so they cant do it again, my zealot responded with "yes thats all well and good but they cant do it again cause i would be oh never mind"
Ah do luv me some dahk tide cuntent.
Great video as always, Frip.
finally someone recognizes the rejects are named character level and thats why they kill daemons and the psykers don't turn everyone inside out accidentally
"IN THE HEAD? THERE SHOULD REALLY BE A WORD FOR THAT!" -Psyker
Outro song?
Great video by the way
Deltarune unreleased ost - Green room..and thankyou! :D
"Not dead yet? L- *sniped on half a wound*
I was quite shocked when what i thought was gonna be some normal voice lines turned into a full conversation between most of the squads characters, mine refused to join because it was an intellectual conversation and i was on my ogryn 😂
The classic 4th wall breaking Psycher commenting on a subtitle typo.
What makes the Voicework of Darktide so good?
That they only had to reach Vermintide to the ankles
what
didnt talk about loose cannon male vet, this is a bad vide (loved the video, will share)
Its pretty over the top I think thats what makes it interesting, no sugarcoating or anything
I fell in love with Commissar Dukane's voice and now my gf hates playing with me.
5:45 Isn't that Shipmistress Brahms, not Hallowette, the actual rogue trader?
Brahms is the Rogue Trader, Hallowette is on her crew. A Rogue Trader is a title and they run the whole show
Do i hear Spiral knights "Unforgiving Onslaught" in the background?
Yes! SK was one of my first pc games and the ost is stuck in my brain at all times
BENEFICENT EMPEROR! BLESS THE UA-cam ALGORITHM, SO THAT THIS VIDEO WOULD GET 100K VIEWS
Wait! wolfer is bald too!!
I put 600 hours in because I like the immersion of being a cracked out, rejected, br*tish fanatic that is screaming at the top of their lungs while fighting for their life nonstop. I have zero regrets about it.
The money they pay the actors. Next question.
first time i played dark tide, my left for dead 2 senses were in insane scizho alert more, non stop spitter and jockey sounds!?!?!?REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! to this day i hear the sound cue for melee attack i always think oh god acid coming in, but... now i like it :#
Huh? How do u not know Toby Longworth? He has spoken so many 40k books
Outro ost?
DON'T CARE HOW OLD SHE IS
you didn't have to do that, lmao 😂
What makes the voicework of Vermintide 2 so much better? Oh right, because actual characters with personalities.
(they say the same 6 lines on repeat)
Cry more.
funi noises
7:36 huh…
Just me or would it be great if they added Aldari outcasts as a class :)
True. New classes are always welcomed. Though, I don't know how they could justify them being of a different species. In Vermintide it was the end of the world, so racism is discarded when everyone is going to die in a few days xD
@@LangostaV76 Aldari on the path of the outcast commonly find themselves fighting with humans, mainly rogue traders or inquisitors
Ironic, conisdering most of the community hates it. This was a MASSIVE step down from Vermintide
hard disagree about the personality thing, always seemed like the 5 would repeat the same 5 lines every six seconds...i *love* dts personalities tho lol
The only character voice i don't like in this game is one of the zealots.
I dont quite remember what the voice type is called but he just doesn't sound very convincing to me, like hes trying too hard to sound like a religious fanatic.
Always takes me out of the immersion when he speaks.
When i compare that to like Saltzpyre from V2 its night and day.
Some of the voice actors carry. Some isn't so good. Vermintide has better dialogue and voice acting :)
but does female loner need a hug?
Personally, Darktide has good voice acting but terrible writing for it, a lot of the personalities feel like they had one or two jokes for them and then just search for many, many ways of expressing them.
Ogre is dumb, psyker is your generic crazy psyker, fanatic goes from love the emperor to love the emperor and tolerate your friends and marksman, good lord i am a happy man i never have to hear a single line about fucking cadia and the general joke being, ogre is dumb and everyone likes him or at least tolerates him.
While i can remember a shit ton of lines from vermitide that have either become community memes or just are funny when they happen, i honestly can´t remember a single one from darktide and its not really due to them being voiced badly, they just are incredibly dull and forgettable.
You lost your point when you spelt psyker wrong
@@madmonty4761 gotta love grammar nazis, you spell one word wrong and your whole argument is moot, very nice.
@@Thedefenses your argument is horrible anyway

"What makes the Voicework of Darktide so good?"
Ever played Vermintide?
Voice actors give a fuck, and their studio has great equipment.
Saved you 8:14 minutes of complete irrelevance / pointless ranting.
Edit: Added to the useless upload playlist "MB Thieves".

Some of it is good... not all.
Darktide voice lienes are a joke compared vermintide 2
hard cut to a clip of them having the "flaggon of ale" conversation for the 100th time... i swear vt2 is the most overrated game ever made, darktide surpasses it in every way
I like when the flamer screams NUUUUUUUURRRRRGGLE
