  • Let's talk about burnout in Tech! Is the pay really worth the sacrifice? Are we even aware of the burnout when we are enduring it? I want to share some of the signs I experienced when I went through a burnout in tech as a Software System Engineer.

I really appreciate this video. I was only thinking I might be burnt out. After watching this video, I am pretty sure I am already at stage II or even III. There are so many signs are happening on myself now. I am working on an exit strategy to get into a better working env which I think it's the most effective solution now.

When I first started working at a Data Center for one of the big tech companies, the people in the office who had been there awhile would espouse how "this place is a prison." Being new I thought it was strange and told myself, no way this place is prison, right? I had a one hour commute to work and part of the route wasn't the safest. There had been frequent accidents at a particular intersection along my route. Not two weeks after an accident had happened, I was coming up to the intersection and noticed all the police. I thought oh, no, this is bad...usually when accidents happen there, the police still wave people thru, so they can get to work, but not this morning. They were telling people to turn around and take a 40min detour. It was a horrendous accident at dusk and a 35-year old woman had passed- around 4:30am. When the officer told me to turn around, I almost just went back home because I didn't want to take the detour and was in pure shock. I had already planned to take time off to study for some certifications the following week, but I never went back and sent in my notice. I ended up taking some mushrooms and had these insights that verberated thru my body as to how the place was designed like a prison, and how it actually made me feel to work there. People usually say don't quit a good job until you have another lined up, but even though my mind could have went back, I could not force my body to return...

Burn out in tech is real, save enough money so you can just quit when you need to and find another job.

this is way too relatable :( I am glad things worked out for you though. Do you have any advice for others who are struggling on how to get out of the rut? My plan at the moment is to try and find a new job but a lot of places are on hiring freezes and I worry my burnout will carry across to my new job.

My out was getting another job unfortunately... but luckily I was able to move within the company, which makes it a little easier.
