Something about her had always sounded so effortless but in a way that you can't imitate without being really comfortable and practiced with your voice.
Incredible I was literally not expecting that you would appreciate Billie's style as you are more of that powerful type singer, but you never fail to amaze that's why you're incredible. Just amazing
She deserves that "How to Sing Like" video. She's one of the best of her generation, so inspiring ! Ok, now I know how my next song is gonna sounds like ;-) Thank you again, Chris !
This is amazing! Thank you for making this video. She literally invented her own technique and I think it’s a completely new style cause I never ever hear any singer who sang like her before. For me, it felt like she’s using a low chest voice, with some vocal fry at some parts, that’s why some people called it as “whisper-sing”. I actually learned at succeeded to mimic her style and I had to say it’s REALLY hard and so exhausting. It requires a very skilled vocal and breath control, Dresecendo-Crescendo something mostly only choir kids know (Billie was in choir), otherwise it would be accidentally too loud, led to voice cracks, or it’s too low, and running out of breath that makes your voice doesn’t come out in some notes. You can clearly hear and compare how different Billie singing technique from her older song. I think my future and No Time to Die is the songs of her that fully used this technique.
You are a legend. Her new song, 'What Was I Made For' has made me so interested in her music and I came straight to you to learn the singing technique lol
I think of this kind of singing as "falsetto chest voice" when singing like this its really easy to seamlessly go between registers, because everything is so light
This is partly how I learned how to support a good mixed voice. Cuz a chesty mix is just this, with more cord closure, more support, and more compression.
Would be very interesting to hear your opinion of her switch-up in Happier Than Ever. Even non-fans are blasted by that song! Thank you for this wonderful video
Funny I wanted to look up how to sing with more power.. but than I got side tracked and heard a nice billie song.. then it lead it me here.. and this was useful.. Thanks for sharing! :)
Amazing tutorial i have been obsessing over these tiny desk concerts studying her since they came out! amazing tips about the vibrato and the doing vocal fry in higher registers!!
@@chrisliepe Best vocal teacher i have found on youtube. Still have to look through all your stuff but your stuff on how to scream right has really helped me too!!
Amazing. I know you are mainly a rock singer but pop styles suit you better than they should. I'm impressed. I've already requested Legend and Mendes. After watching this I'd like to add Charlie Puth and John Mayer to the list
Please do Steve Perry! Love to see how you react to his use of vowel and how it allows him to switch registers seamlessly. He has a nasal sound while also being very clean.. One thing worth noting is his regular speaking voice vs hi “performance” voice
I love the approach she has! You broke it down so well. Could you do a breakdown on Remington Leith from Palaye Royale? I think he's got a similar approach to Eilish
I feel like the way they record is a big factor contributing to the sound as well. Is the gain up a lot? Certain EQ? Would be curious what you think. I noticed the mic is quite far away in her performance but its picking up all of the subtle breaths and such. How does that work?
Yeah whisper-y singing like Billie's is usually compressed quite a lot to really bring out the voice. The choice of mic is also quite important. She is using a condenser microphone, which pick up super quiet sounds well.
Hello chris! I recommend that you check out Rory Rodriguez's vocals. He is a insane vocalist both live and studio, and im interested in knowing which tecnique he uses, because i have asked him and he doesn't know exactly. So i would like for you to examinate it, and make a video on it! (Dayseeker)
As a complete flip from this, seeing you cover someone as proficient and diverse as Russell Allen (Underworld album) would be amazing. Super distorted but pitched growls, high and resonant clean mix, it would be great
Thank you for this thoughtful exploration, I'm quite new at singing and am very quiet, and this was lovely and encouraging insight on embracing that quiet. Subbed and looking forward to exploring your voice lessons!
I know they’re a smaller band but I would love to see you do a video on Dan Campbell from the Wonder Years. His voice is so interesting on songs like There, There and Cardinals and Cigarettes & Saints.
That's a wonderful video! What would you say , is Billie mostly switching between mixed voice and head voice? Or is it more chest voice? I'm just wondering, she sings such high notes without any power and I don't know how one can do that with chest voice. Thanks for the video :)
@@chrisliepe oh really? Thanks! I feel like the higher notes often sound like mixed voice, a bit "twangy" if you know what I mean. But I never was sure about it. It's so hard to divide between chest and mixed voice sometimes.
It would be cool to see you do a video on Larkin Poe. They are a great group with lots of cool harmonies. They have tons of good live performances on their UA-cam channel to pick from.
hi chris, what about a video of how to sing like hyde the ocalist of vamps and larc en ciel, it would be and amazing video of someone out of this part of the world
I'm not at all a fan of hers. But this 'soft' approach is intriguing, simply as a vocalist. It seems to me its an over-enunciated dissection of letters. Vowels in particular, of course. There's obviously chorus added to her mic which is turned up to 11... I've always been in the camp that vibrato should not be forced. Rather, happen naturally due to complete relaxation.
i watched this video because i need to know more about artistic singing. at what point am i a lousy singer and at what point am i artistic. i would like to see a video about Janet Devlin. And if you don't mind, try to recreate her voice in a male chest or mix voice. This is a great video, but as a male, i wouldn't try to sing an entire song in my head voice to match her pitch. And as a non experienced singer, i am left a bit confused. Great channel !! I am learning a lot from you.
Hey Chris, I would love to know what sort of microphone you are using. And does that mic have a pop filter inbuilt. I mean I have seen you shout and scream on that mic, but I never heard any pops or Beeps.
Mojave MA300... no pop filter, I'm just intentional about my angle of approach and proximity. It takes some practice, but it's more fun than having the dumb pop filter right in front of my face, plus that wouldn't look very good for the videos :)
Singing softly is completely different. Well, I don't pull chest voice, for one thing. I switch WAY earlier. Cool to do. But I did hurt my voice years ago. Back when singing meant SHOUTING REALLY LOUD!! Didn't have the support needed to sing softly. Sounds dumb, but I hurt my voice trying to sing in choir without being loud. Had horrible technique. Wasn't connected properly. So yeah, singing soflty IS very effective and CAN be difficult.
@@luna4037 Oh, I'm fine and it was years ago! Basically, I was mimicking what I though I heard putting way too much effort into it. I sing every week on stage. I was always too lazy to focus on my technique properly, but I'm fine. There's just so much interesting sounds to explore!

Billie and her brother are not my cup of tea but I do appreciate that they are at least different than all the other stuff you hear in pop music today. Their popularity is a sign that people are desperate for something different. It’s not easy to sing like Billie Eilish, it’s crazy breath control
I only have seen jazz singers doing that stuff
fortunately can do it 🙂not that much great but it's match so closely...50% ig!
Nah, it's just breathy
I have always believed, Billie's soft whisper singing ability takes an advanced skillset
Yeah. That's what many people don't know. It's takes a whole lot to do it.
