  • Put yourself in the shoes of a tattoo artist for a second. You’re relaxing after a long day at the shop, scrolling through the ol’ Instagram. What pops into your feed but a tattoo that looks hauntingly familiar. But, something is off. You remember creating this piece of art a couple of months ago, but here it is, on someone else’s feed and don’t rather poorly. Is this an episode of “The Twilight Zone?” No, it’s just the work of a tattoo copycat. We asked our panel of artists what they thought about tattoo copiers, and most importantly, how they felt when they saw their own work copied.
This is our final episode of Season 14, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we have. But don’t worry, we’ll be back with a whole new group of tattoos for Season 15 in a couple of weeks!
    Thanks for watching!

I sent my tattoo guy a picture of a tattoo I wanted to get. Assumed based on our conversation that what I sent was what I was going to get. Showed up for my appt. to see a completely different version. Needless to say I was upset at first. He asked what I didn't like and I was like it's not the same thing! He started to walk away and muttered "Well I didn't want to copy someone else's work..." and that's when it hit me. Each artist puts their own spin on things and copying another person's tattoo isn't really why they got into this business. I ended up getting his version and I've got a bunch of compliments on it and I love it. Shout-out to Liam at Olympus Ink.

From the perspective of someone who HAS a copied tattoo, not too bad honestly. I was 18 at the time so I just chalk it up to not knowing much about tattooing at the time. I think my tattoo artist probably thought that he changed up enough for it to not be copied? But the layout is the same, the positioning of the characters is the same it just has slight/moderate detail changes.

@@terminaldeity I agree with you when the artist is really well known and/or deceased, but what if a client comes in with a photograph that the source is unknown of? It's not that the tattoo artist would try and pass a photo off as their own, but it's the possible issue that the original art creator maybe doesn't even know and/or didn't get paid for their art. I mean sure you can say 'the art creator should just be flattered', but that's where I think the line starts to get a little blurry. If you're not a super famous artist and your work still gets copied in any form without credit/payment, it can be a problem if it's unsure where the copyright ends.

What Bulman said about Brazil is sooooo true. Here we almost don't have "tattoo artists", actually in Portuguese we don't even have a word to differentiate the professionals who create original art and those who just replicate someone else's art - like the tattoo artists v. tattooers in English - everyone is called a "tatuador" (tattooer). So generally when you go to a tattooer you would bring them the exact final design that you want in your body.
I guess you'd only find a proper tattoo artist in the big cities like São Paulo or Rio that have a stronger influence from North American culture, and boy, aren't those professionals REEEEALLY expensive for our Brazilian standards

To all the pedantic people in the comments, think about it like this. A musician covering a famous song or something in the public domain isn't "stealing" anyone's work, because it's clear what the origin is. A musician passing off a lesser known musician's song as their own IS stealing because the origin is not well-known to the public. Here's an example. Take the band Alien Ant Farm, who are mostly known for their cover of "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson. Is that "stealing?" No, because everyone knows it's a cover. Now, if some other band were to take a lesser known Alien Ant Farm song and pass it off as their own, THAT would be stealing. It's not that complicated.

there's two flaws with that comparison
      1) song covers credit the artist.
      2) song covers are a recreation of someone elses song but with your own style.
If we took it to a visual arts perspective we could say that Andy Warhol is doing *covers* that became more famous than the original picture or design. And yet obviously he didn't design the Campbell soup design nor did he take the picture or Marilyn Monroe nor is he claiming he did. He transformed them into something else.
the problem with copying art has more to do with someone saying they created something when they actually didn't.
