The proof is already in evidence. BYU has the largest arena for hoops and the largest stadium for football. AND those facilities are filling up every game!! In addition when BYU travels, they draw tons of fans to their road games!! Possibly the best travel draw in Big 12 conference!!
Utah has a whole lot of LDS fans. Wherever they go they can fill the stands too. Utah has always felt like they were slighted by BYU. They have always felt like they should be the only big program in the state. The rivalry has been epic all of my time in Utah. My family moved here in 1961 even then it was a big deal when they played against each other.

FYI -- BYU left the Mountain West first as an independent. They received an offer for the Pac 12 but turned in down because they play on Sundays and BYU doesn't... BYU and Utah have continued to compete through the years and every game is close and could go either way... It's a typical rivalry...
Hell NO ! Stop putting religion into reason a sports program is so great. BYU is ok but not most important. Not all Mormons are BYU fans. Not even close. Utah and Arizona are the two most valuable additions. Third would probably be Houston or UCF. BYU could be 4th or 5th.

@@davidbradham3515We need to be more humble. We’ve only had two good years (and BYU beat us and went 5-0 in our conference one of those years). Without our PAC 12 advantage it may be hard to compete after this year in football… and our basketball is the weakest in the Big 12. Again, let’s be humble and work hard. Go Utes‼️
BYU will own this conference within 5 years. Not only will they always have one of the most competitive football teams, but they will compete in Basketball and lead in several other sports, tennis, cross country, women’s soccer, men and women’s volleyball, etc etc. And their academics are already the most prestigious in the conference as well. Just face it, BYU is tops.
Great in theory, but the BYU actual viewership isn't even close to what you would think, as you theorize the "footprint". It doesn't really translate. Which is why they weren't ever invited to the B12, ALL the other times the B12 added teams - or looked at adding teams an didn't - until this last time. Their actual media presence doesn't "move the needle".
BYU owned Utah until the PAC 12 invite. BYU earned the right to go big 5, but for political reasons, Utah got the bid. They immediately adopted the BYU “playbook” by welcoming returned missionaries (many brothers and sons of former Cougars), recruiting heavily in Polynesian countries, and eventually hiring a BYU product to coach them. Power shifted for a few years as Utah took the big money, top local recruits and prestige, while BYU stood by wondering how Utah received everything BYU had earned for 20 years. The tables are turning once again, and Utah now has a fair fight on their hands. Anyone in Utah who disagrees with this assessment is either under 50 or high on whatever they’re smoking up north these days.
Utah has always had a few returned missionaries, and they’ve also recruited Polynesian players just as long as BYU. Where you also get it wrong is Utah didn’t get an invite to a P5 for political reasons, they were the original BCS buster and then won the Sugar Bowl against Bama a few years later. That opened the door along with the fact that unlike BYU they’re an AAU member, and a top research university. I would say BYU did get left out of the PAC for political reasons but at the time the B12 didn’t want them either. Anyone who disagrees is a zoob homer.
No. The only time BYU dominated the series was from 1979 to about 1991. It was usually neck and neck for the next 20 years, and before the 70's the series was dominated by Utah.
Just a note on byu’s relationship with the church, it’s important to understand that membership in the church does not equal fandom for byu. Outside the US, members of the church do not care about byu athletics. I am a member of the church who lives in Utah and who served a mission in a foreign country with a very large population of church members. I can tell you with certainty that virtually none of them care about byu athletics. I actually met more Utah fans than I did BYU fans. The real footprint lies within the confines of the United States, which there are about 6 million members of the church. I can also say with certainty that fandom within the church is not at all concentrated on byu. Most of my friends and acquaintances in the church outside of Utah have their own college football teams they follow, if they care about college sports at all. I have many friends and acquaintances that attended byu that don’t care about college sports, they only care about their pro team. Many members of the church don’t care about sports at all. I’m not saying that byu’s relationship with the church is insignificant when it comes to sports but it is largely blown out of proportion.
Well I guess it varies from place to place because I have seen them have a tremendous following outside the US and I get around to several countries, particularly in Asia.
