In my town, Five Below is right beside the movie theater. Everybody goes there to load up on candy before heading to the movies.

That’s so funny because that reminds me of the dollar store next to the supermarket isnt allowed to sell food because the supermarket sells food and when I was told that by one of the employees immediately was like “that is an unusual monopoly“.. I can imagine the reason being is that the strip mall is owned by the person that owns the supermarket and that is just a rule that they have to go by In order to keep their lease in the strip mall
Five Below is probably the cleanest store I have seen. You can eat off the floors. And for being filled with kids, nothing is out of place. The store I go to is over 10 years old and when you walk in it still feels brand new.
I never noticed that until you wrote this.
I went in there about a year ago shocked to find they installed self checkout registers and managed to make their already new looking store even nicer! And it was surrounded by much older looking buildings which definitely made it stand out
You are absolutely correct. They definitely make it a point to keep the stores pretty near perfect.
It's so true! I love shopping there because it always looks and smells so clean! Their workout section is awesome if I'm in a bind too
They do keep the store neat and inviting. Messiness and clutter is one of the biggest reasons I wont shop at a store. That's why I wont step foot in a Dollar General. Every DG I've ever been in is messy and cluttered as heck!
Five below is such a fun store that's not crushingly depressive like the dollar stores are. I feel bad exiting a dollar store. I feel great after a 5 below
Yeah dollar stores always feel so...run down, it's weird that it's just kinda like, their aesthetic since it's been that way for as long as i remember
I remember when Dollar Tree first opened in my town when I was a kid. I thought it was great and expansive. Being next to a movie theater to get cheap snacks from was a nice plus too. Now as an adult, there are a lot of things wrong and it feels depressing when I leave whether I buy anything or not.
U right, we used to have this marketplace in our town that had vendors and i would go to buy phantom menace figures. When i was younger i abdolutley loved the place, despite most vendors selling bootleg indian toys. But i came back 4 years ago, nothing had changed but it felt so sad, like its somehow incomplete. So weird
I only need to go to Dollar Tree a few times per year, but mine are well-maintained, not "depressive." I buy greeting cards, batteries, and dog toys mainly and whatever else catches my eye.
I remember going to a Dollar general and it was all messy, junk all over the floor. But when I go to five below it's more organized and happy looking.
Five Below does not feel like a dollar store; it feels like a budget Target, a modern K-mart, or a fun-oriented TJ Maxx/Marshall’s. 👍 The amount of usable tech and $5 goodies is amazing. Got my best $5 GameCube controller there.
That's what I thought
Sounds like they managed to find that niche just between the two.
People who have actually been there seem to remark on the cleanliness of the stores. That’s one big difference with any dollar store I’ve been to.
Or a hip k-mart
It's like a combo of the dollar store and target
Nowadays five below is the closest thing that gives me the type of feelings I got as a kid when walking into a dedicated toy store like ToysRus. I am not the age for it, but still makes me nostalgic.
Their target demographic is 5-19. And then there's me who's bought some things from there a couple timeslol
first 5 Below I Ever saw was the Spot that a K-B toys was in for years. I always associate them together for that reason alone even though they have nothing to do with each other.
The first Five Below in my area opened in an old Zany Brainy location. It's cool to learn that they were started by the same guy
same lol
I just got a Five Below in my area a little over a year ago. It's on the site of the former Sears which was demolished shortly after closing down. I'm well above their demographic (about to turn 41), but they do have cool electronics and battery-operated lights.
Five Below might be one of the greatest store concepts of all time . Affordable yet not dollar store depressing. Just enough life to make you wanna stay and shop.
FIVE BELOW- The official store of "somehow I spent $36.82 and can't remember a single thing I purchased"
@@jimeagle1155 late stage capitalism or something lol
Dollar Store, but it's in on the trends.
nothing more depressing than a dollar store, absolutely horrible lol
Growing up, Dollar Tree use to be that "fun dollar store" especially back when they were in malls during the 90s and early 2000s. It seems since about 2010 or so, the stores all have this somewhat dirty, monolithic look. I don't know why Dollar Tree lost their fun vibe. Five Below is now that on steroids.
Another reason online shopping doesn’t threaten Five Below is the teenage focus. Teens like to go out with their friends to spend their money, not just shop online. Great videos!
And teens mostly likely don't have credit cards yet

I honestly didn’t know Five Below advertised to teenagers. My grandmother goes there, so I thought it was just a dollar store but better. That’s good marketing to get all those age groups in.
I'm 61 and visited the one just opened near me today. I found that while there were many things that appeal to me and I bought about $20 in merchandise, most of what they have would appeal to the younger crowd. I think that perhaps two thirds of their target demographic is 12-25 based on product mix. They have a ton of candy, low price jewelry and accessories, toys, art supplies and electronics. I was by far the oldest person in the store. there were about 25 customers there and two thirds were too young to buy alcohol. In fact most of the adults who were there had their kids with them. if you have not been and you are in the above demographic I'd say you will find it a fun store to visit. I did not see anything priced over $10. So this place appeals to kids and grandparents. If you like Dollar Tree and Walmart you probably will like this place as it fills the gap in between with tons of youth oriented items.
@@nunyabiznez6381 Sounds great
I can definitely tell you from working at that one that we honestly get nearly as many of the older generations here as the teenagers, especially during the holidays (maybe a little exaggeration, but just the other day I had an 80-something year old lady tell me that she loved this store and it made me really happy, especially considering the overall “focus” of it). When I told my mom about this, she made a good point: I get the feeling that a lot of the older generation like it for themselves, too, as it’s very similar to something like an old “five-and-dime” store, just dressed up in a very trendy new-wave outfit.
I like Five Below, even though I wouldn't say I'm a frequent customer, because it offers a lot of the fun of browsing at a dollar store, but it doesn't have the dingy, depressing atmosphere and the items are mostly fun and interesting.
That describes it perfectly
@@joshdeveaux6936
Slightly better items above a dollar store, but less than fashionable like a Walmart
Their lines also aren't all the way down the aisles with one person at the register like Dollar Tree.
After working there, the environment to me seems Patronizing like a Gen X using words, slang, and colloquialisms like "cringe" and "drip".
It also gives me vibes of a girl calling herself "quirky" without actually being quirky.
Yeah dollar tree seem so depressing and kind ashame to be a dollar store
No joke, for years before I've ever been in a Five Below I thought it was one of those fancy ice cream places like Coldstone.
there was a store similar to this back in the 80s/90s called Solo Serve and my pops and I thought they opened it next to the Baskin Robbins as a competitor
I used to think it was a clothing store for teen girls. I really don’t know why I thought that.
@@BangBang-hk4rg well that is a part of there aimed target. So if your location showed the clothing in the window that might give you that impression.
I thought I was the only one, the name kind of gives me freezer vibes
I use to think it was a snowboard shop... I live in Texas so I always thought it was out of place but found myself visiting one to waste some time and was very surprised to see no snow gear.
Can we also talk about the shopping baskets they offer? Walking around with the little basket rolling behind you is so satisfying.
yes basket good we give basket
as an employee, i love the place, we get a lot of freedom and the company treats us well
This is good to know. I was in one for the first time ever today and found a lot of items I wanted at a lower price than I have ever seen them.
Do you still work there and is it the same feeling? Just wondering cause I was thinking of applying there.
@@larslan1975 I actually work there and the job doesn’t make me dead inside so it’s a cool job
Dude I freaking LOVE Five Below. The stores are always clean, they're always adding new stuff, and the employees leave you the hell alone. The stuff is cheap, but not crap and there's so many different categories of stuff. Whenever I buy a new phone I stop at Five Below for a cheap screen protector & case to tide me over till I find a slightly better one. My bedroom is decorated in fake plants I got there and I got my comforter there too. They sell my favorite nag champa incense so I don't have to go to the hippie store in the mall to buy it. All my storage baskets are from Five Below.
Nice!
Being small definitely means they can be cleaner. I didn’t think of that but that is a very good aspect especially during this pandemic
I got a small yet very amazing drawing kit for 2.50 a while ago, andi uually geta big bag of candy there to
Bro them employees not bothering me every 5 damn seconds asking if I need help is the greatest thing about the store
I got a metal water bottle there and it's been great! I use it almost every day and it has yet to dent! They also sell my favorite brand of chips so that's another win!
I think it’s a brilliant concept. There’s not many places anymore where a kid can blow their weeks allowance. I know it’s tough learning how to save, especially an entire month for some cheap toy that’s just going to break the next day. With traditional toy stores gone, and a desire not to shop an entire Target store, including groceries with their mom, it’s good for them to have a store of their own.
I like to think that stores like these motivate kids to saving up to get those toys in the first place.
I get my niece a Five Below gift card every Christmas because it's her favorite store
This is so off topic but I started a Chococat fan page and you happen to have him in your profile pic, my instagram is @chococatfanpage lol please fallow me friend 🥺
I suppose that might be part of the charm. Kids can go into the store and have fun. And due to the fact the store isn't big, parents aren't as apprehensive about going in the store.
Online will kill in-store shopping.
I’m a teacher, and I love this store because I can get items I can use for educational purposes. I also get cheap charging cords for my phone
I'm 61 and I gave up art school because I could not afford the ludicrously expensive art supplies and that was 40 years ago. Today I walked into the Five Below store that opened near me last week and I walked out with an arm full of art supplies for $20 that would have cost me over $100 at the art supply store (major chain) in the same shopping center. The best deal were the 16" x 20" cotton stretched canvases for $5 for a pair. But they also had drawing sets, acrylic paints and drawing pads also for that same price range. I wish this place existed when I was trying to go to art school 40 years ago. I found tons of school supplies some at better prices than dollar tree. An example was dollar tree had a package of pencils for $1 for five pencils but Five Below had a package of fifty pencils for $5. So that is half what Dollar Tree wanted. I didn't look at every single item but there are tons of stuff there that was the cheapest price I've ever seen. In fact those same canvases I saw for $2.5 per canvas would have cost me $4 when I was in art school all those years ago.
@@nunyabiznez6381 damn that’s good to know. I have an Etsy store where I sell my calligraphy and painting and supplies gets super expensive.
@@tacobella99 I also have found some nifty art supplies at dollar tree. Yesterday I got some larger tubes of black and white which we all use far more than most of the other colors. They were a dollar each for larger tubes. Are they the same quality as major brands? No of course not but in the right hands any acrylic paint can look good. I also use cheap acrylic paints instead of watercolor. The biggest complaint my artist friends have about cheap acrylics is the flat or matte texture. The biggest reason for not using acrylics instead of watercolor paint is the shiny texture. So they make fairly decent watercolor paints and it wasn't half bad getting 24 different colors. Yes small tubes but I mostly use them for water color though I am going to do a couple of acrylic paintings of my deceased parents. I'm still not over the ludicrously cheap canvas prices. 2 16" x 20" for $5 and not canvas board but actual stretched canvases and I forget the size but single canvases for $5 that are nearly twice that size. I got my white plastic palettes at Dollar Tree. I use the deviled eggs trays instead of artist's palettes because they have 24 little bowls (egg size) and a middle well perfect for either water to clean the brush or for mixing larger amounts of paint. A friend of mine paints in oils and he goes to home depot and buys 4' x 8' sheets of Masonite and cuts them into various sizes and uses that instead of canvas. He is an established artist and swears that after covering it with gesso it is safe to paint on and has a very smooth texture perfect for painting in oils. I know lumber has gone up in price but even at $30 a sheet he can still get six panels at 24" x 32" and that works out to $5 each and they are more durable than canvas.
Their website has a pretty solid selection as well! Going in the store is THE best experience to find a lot of great product, but their online options are pretty good too. $5.95 shipping on matter how big or small the order is pretty darn good!
That's very nice to know. Thank you.
When 5below 1st opened up near me, I ended up buying Christmas gifts for the whole family there. Saved me tons!

Five Below has a more family-friendly 'spencers' vibe and while aimed at teenagers has some nostalgia for the adults too. And with things like a $5 volleyball for practicing, it's hard to say no to some of the items.
I remember as a teen going out with my parents on Sunday’s after church to the buffet in our local strip mall, and then we would go to Five Below. They had something for all of us, my mom loved the home decoration stuff, my Dad liked the sports stuff, my little siblings like the candy and toys, and I like the tech. Their locations are great, in a trip mall where families and teens already go out to eat, afterwards they go out to look around at local stores and Five Below is perfect because everything is cheap.
Who remembers the aisle dedicated to prank stuff like whoopi cushions, zapping gum, fart spray, fake fly in a fake ice cube ... this was my favorite part of the store besides the candy
Man bought so much of the candy that made you fart, and used to hand them out to classmate. 😂😂😂
Still not sure how i end up spending $80 + whenever I go there.

Same. I easily spend at least $50 there every time. The locations where I live is a "10 below" now. Inflation 😪
Witchery
I spent almost 100 there last time. It’s dangerous!
When my friend worked at Best Buy he'd bristle at name Five Below bc all his customers would just go across the street for their phone cases and screen protectors. Haha!
Well, seeing that last week I was in a Best Buy here in Canada looking for a short ethernet cable to reprogram a wifi extender that should have cost lest then 5 dollars for and they wanted $30 for it, I don't blame those customers.
Considering the screen protectors are the same brand and a quarter of the price, no big surprise.
Their tempered glass screen protectors are absolutely TOPS. I got a two pack when my phone was new and still have the second one. Their vent-mount magnetic phone holders are the best!
I prefer to get my electronic stuff at Five Below because it's like a fifth of the price of Best Buy, Target, Microcenter, Amazon Prime, etc.
Edit: oh yeah, and it's the same quality.
I go there to get $5 phone cases, until I can go on Amazon and get the same phone case that Best Buy is selling, for half the price. 😂😂🤣 fuck Best Buy.

that thing about how with the candy - you cant find some stuff anywhere else, its so true!!! its literally the only reason i go to five below. they get some neat pocky flavors that even world market doesn't have
OoO I order pocky on amazon. I will definitely go there.
Five Below feels like a mini mall 🤣 it’s cute
True! I like that it's smaller. Boxbox stores are kinda getting too darn big lol
There's lots of stuff there for people of all ages. Decor, holiday stuff, organizing stuff, things for my dogs, etc. I'm 44 and love the store.
I have former co-workers who left our sinking ship of a job to work for Five Below. They were promoted quickly and treated well. Five Below isn't just clean, but they also have some decent products to keep the adults bringing their teenagers there.
Can't help but really enjoy the place when I have to go there. And yeah, if you look up some of the products, alternatives online are more expensive. I bought a USB salt lamp (the pink glow is very cool) for $5 and the ones online were huge and unwieldy as well as very, very expensive and heavy. My favorite ramen is only available at Five Below and it's a dollar. When they were stocked for a short time at our other grocery stores it was $3 for a cardboard bowl and then they just faded from existence. If I order them on Amazon it's a similar mark up, maybe about $2.50. So Five Below is very interesting.
The nostalgia type decorations for the holidays are also pretty great because they're cheap but they're also going to be able to be reused for a few years. It's not every day I buy a $5 box of window clings and I can use them for five years. Not every day I can get this stuff I can show to my nieces and go "hey I had this in the 90s!" and then they make fun of me for being old.
But it's still a high class dollar store so you'll always find crappy items here and there. Just know what you want.
“Five Below is Lit”
Said Me and *EVERYONE* else ever
unless you work there lol
As a teen, I really enjoy going because they have such fascinating stuff. I go in there without an idea of what to buy, but just look around and see if I want it. The best part is that all of its cheap so if I really want to buy something, it’s not a big constraint
Honestly this is a pretty good endorsement and now I wanna go check one out
The store should just be called “Five” because there is never anything below
Sure there is. Company Man mentioned their great candy selection. If they charged $5 for a candy bar, they would never sell any. And they have 3-packs of laptop webcam shutters for $3.
Actually where I am that’s exactly what it’s called because there’s allot of things that cost $10
@@MundaneGray webcam shatters are on aliexpress at 80 cent for 3... probably just a bad example lol
Perhaps among the things you look for but I was in one today for the first one ever and more than half their merchandise was under $5.
I literally started working at Five Below because I enjoyed the store so much lol
Dollar general had also been expanding. Recently, one was built right next to my neighbor that’s kind of in the middle of nowhere, so it’s been a godsend not having to travel 30 minutes for a gallon of milk. They also recently closed one next to my grandparent’s and built a larger on right next to it
No doubt. DG stores have been popping up like weeds all over the place down here in Georgia.
DG treats their employees like garbage. 1-2 people in the store, TOPS. They stock, run registers, inventory and clean. That’s why the stores look like tornados hit them, and they’re filthy.
@@brycmtthw something about dollar general always with eyeshot of a trailer park.... I’m in a mobile, and closest store is a dollar general.
@@brycmtthw mines are not actually so clean but then again dollar tree owns dollar general so maybe that’s why for you.
I always enjoy eating my Wednesday lunch watching the new Company Man video.
same!
Nom nom! Lol
I also watch this channel while eating
A new Five Below is being built in a local shopping center near me, I thought that would be the only one in Utah. Just looked up on google and there are 7 locations opening in Utah. That’s crazy, I didn’t know this company was this popular.
Another great video! I've shopped at Five Below, but I didn't realize how successful they were or how talented their leadership is. I think you hit the nail on the head with your 5 points. And that headline about the toy stores was hilarious 😂😂😂 Thank you for including that!
I'm an old man, Yet, I love Five Below. 👍😎👍
The brand “Zany Brainy” reminded me of the now long gone “Marbles: The Brain Store”. That store was always a lot of fun
A while ago I used to think it was a winter coat store. When I went into it after learning from a Scott the Woz video, I go there every time i am in an area that has one. Just fun stuff to get. I work at a math center and I often get random stuff for my students.
The location to every store is always in an active area. That alone makes the trip worth it. Great video!
It's funny that Five Below is like a "dollar store for teenagers". I'm damn new 60 years old, and Five Below is my absolute "go to" for what I call "consumable tech". I can't even IMAGINE where else to get phone chargers and USB cables and the like. LOL (I'm also a PA native, So there's that..)
Can confirm on the charging cables. As long as Five Below still exists, I'm not buying charging cables anywhere else. It's just not worth it otherwise.
I'm from ohio and I can confirm, its the best place to go for phone chargers and usb cables and other stuff like that. Tons of other stores over price the chargers or sell defective products.
They are the most reasonably priced place for chargers and cables by far. Almost Amazon good.
Thanks for that. Cables have become consumable products.
5 below also has a huge old person market imo, my gram loved going to 5 below
5:03 I loved Zany Brainy as a kid! The one in my city shut down when I was young. I miss it :(
My boyfriend just got fired from there because the company who handles their employee leave services wasn't getting back to him when he took off for a surgery. After a while they let him go without telling him because they didn't send him the paperwork saying when he could return to work.
Sounds like you're pointing to everyone besides your boyfriend. So it's both the company, and his medical provider's fault? He should have followed up and made sure his surgery date and any recovery time was known to his management based on the discussion with his provider. Then post-op follow up he should have made sure to get the medical OK for getting back to work and pass that info along to his company.
@@MasterMalrubius he called the company once and they said they would get back to him and they only called back during his surgery and he kept trying to get ahold of them every day for the next 2 weeks at least about his leave. It really shouldn't be that frustrating just to get just 2 weeks off for a surgery. Especially after he only got 4 hours of work scheduled in the entire month of January.
Sounds like he sucks as an employee. Can’t stand people like that. My guess is he always was calling out and asking for more hours at the same time. If I’m wrong whatever, hope the surgery wasn’t serious and he’s good to get a new job
@@ohnoitsohno9767 yah, taking all the hours he can sucks lmao, only the managers were given more then 4 hours every two weeks in January. The boss just got fired for firing him and another one of the best employees ( the three people who no call, no show every shift still work there) as well as some other fucked up shit, but sure lol. The company goes through a third party service for leaves, he was on an approved leave but the company never got back to 5 below saying he could go back after being approved to do so. Ex boss even called but they never picked up, but yah, it's his fault. (now that old boss is gone, store has never looked better and they actually begged him to come back today lol)
Five Below is really cool. You can get the bang for your buck there sometimes!
Great videos, man! Love your stuff.
Can confirm, you're the first place I've ever heard of them!
The way I GASPED when you said Zany Brainy!! I was OBSESSED with that store omg! I bought my first razor scooter from there, it had green wheels. It was the only store that continued to carry Amelia’s Notebook series after it left Barnes and Noble. The Zainy Brainy I lived by was situated in this 3-4 store strip mall that was across the parking lot from a dead mall that people used to go walk through. I specifically remember it being by a Burlington Coat Factory. Zany Brainy stayed packed at all hours! There were always kids running around screaming with excitement, moms gossiping, workers who seemed really energetic at all times, and...me who was also screaming in excitement. I was suuuuper hurt when the store just one day was gone. An Old Navy moved in and a while later it just vanished. It was abrupt! It one of the main stores I think about to this day....I’ve seen a ton of Five Belows around, they are beginning to rival Starbucks at this point. The store has never caught my interest...maybe I will visit now after seeing this video. Many blessings mate, I needed that trip down memory lane AND I now want to visit the store. Heroes don’t always wear capes, they make videos. Right on bro.
I'm from Illinois, with family in PA, and travel back and forth across the country regularly, and have never heard of this place until today.
In my region, these stores are usually adjacent to or between other stores adults might shop at like Target or DSW. I think a trip to Five Below is an easy incentive for kids to behave.
Back when there was movie theaters, me and my friends, would load up on snacks at five below, rather than pay theater prices for the same thing.
Wear loose clothing with lots of pockets!
Working at Five Below, especially as a manager, this gives me good insight to seeing what people like. I'll keep this is mind!
I was a long time manager for Five Below. I live near Philly and ran several of the oldest stores, including locally to the mentioned Tom Vellios and had a friendly relationship with him and his family. David Schlessinger left the company a few years ago. Five Below was a great place to work for a long time, and it was fun seeing the company grow. I will say they don’t pay well, so that was a negative. Also, of late, field leadership (regional managers and district managers) isn’t great. The VP of Stores George Hill has scared off some good people. Payroll is extremely tight, and they continually try to cut it more and more. Store management doesn’t have much of a work-life balance; salaried store managers are expected to make up the gaps in payroll by working as many hours as necessary.
Joel is a great CEO, and they have a lot of intelligent and talented people at the corporate level; I know many of them, but there is a disconnect at times between stores and corporate. Overall, I enjoyed working here for the first 8-9 years of my tenure there; the last year or 2 were a struggle.
from BookStore owners to educational toys and finally retail stores, 🤔 interesting business journey for Five Below.
I loved five below when I was a teenager. Glad to see them expanding!
Five Below was one of my mom and I's favorite stores to go to. It's small, but sweet and has a variety of products that can easily attract any demographic, I'm especially a fan of the toys, cosmetics, snacks and art supplies they sell there.
I actually started working at my local Five Below before the holiday season (needed to get out of my first, outdoor job as the weather here gets pretty abhorrent in the winter), and so far, I’ve really enjoyed it (I have a manager who is probably one of the most upbeat people on the planet)! Thanks for this video helping shine some light on the popularity of it and insight as to why!
Have you or anyone else ever hear of a store called Tuesday morning? I would love your breakdown
Tuesday Morning is SHIT. Completely garbage.
Woo-hoo Wednesday at 1300! Show time!!!! Love your work.
Love them for their candy. There’s a 5 Below right near my job, and I love stopping in to get some candy and a drink for $2. It’s a big pick me up for long shifts. (You gotta love 10 laughy taffy for $1)
Omg Companyman you finally did a video of my favorite store that hasn’t gone out of business finally, I have been a Five Below customer since 2012, the very first location in Metro Atlanta opened up in my hometown area of Georgia in Hiram, Georgia next to what is now Old Navy and Kirklands, Marshall’s, Sams Club, and Michael’s, but the Douglasville Georgia Five Below location is not a very clean location because it used to be a very old Rack Room Shoes near Petsmart, Target, Party City, Michael’s, and other smaller shops, so after my first visit to that location never again always went to the one in Hiram Georgia and then in 2015 moved to Panama City Beach Florida and the first Five Below location unfortunately didn’t open until roughly 2018 at Pier Park North, I was devastated until my new area did get one, it’s next to Dick’s Sporting Goods, World Market, Bed Bath and Beyond and other smaller shops, but as of 2020 my area now has two locations one just opened last summer on 23rd Street in Panama City Florida in Bay City Point Shopping Center located to next to a brand new Hobby Lobby that relocated the same year from its existing location that was off of 23rd Street, a brand new Burlington location also opened last fall, Sketchers store, and Ulta also opened brand new locations right near it, now I hardly ever shop at Five Below unless I need something the 23rd Street location even has self checkout which is interesting since some Dollar Generals and CVS Pharmacies just started installing them as well. 🤔 But either way I definitely think Five Below being successful is something you hit the nail on the head on! 😁
