Finch is so mastered at character illustration it's easy to forget he's equally skilled with composition. That frame is absolutely full of clutter and still every element serves the visual flow perfectly. Awesome to watch
Totally agreed. I’ve loved Finch since the 90’s, because his work is always so detailed, but it’s not just a case of throwing lines at the paper for the sake of it (like some other popular artists from that era that went overboard on details lol). He’s so good at packing a scene with detail and energy, without it ever feeling like too much.

It is good to draw from the reference and then draw ffrom reference to the side, but follow the artist. This way you can see your mistakes super well and can improve a lot. I kinda use this method to improve my gesture drawing abilities and i have literally seen improvement in the matter of few days.
To anyone. Improvement does not mean i am already perfect oh no no. But it already was visible enough to give that boost of "woah i am going to make it"
Controlling the composition with lights and shading is a nice method. Personally I use dynamic lines, thin amd thick, medium and other sometimes 3 line types with one stroke to make the background lighter and front darker or lower parts of the page darker and upper part lighter, it looks intresting together with shading.

Thanks for everything, could you show how to intentionally draw out of focus? As if replicating a camera lense? Theres an effect I noticed similar to it in Goodbye Eri and wanted to know if there are more ways you guys know on how to do similar things
One way to do it is to use much thinner lineart that doesn't fully connect, along with lessened detail. Blur is hard to do in comics because comic lineart is inherently a very crisp and contrasty thing usually, so you gotta mimic how something out of focus *feels* rather than literally blurring it. Some styles, especially in indie webcomics, do use actual blurring, I just personally don't like how that looks with lineart and cel shading
Everyone whorships the old oilpaint masters for composition and light. But i bet none of these masters could draw like this. What an absolute talent this guy.😊

How does his graphite looks so smooth, it's like the same shade and smooth as butter it feels like in the big areas, is it the paper, the graphite or just his control? or maybe a combination of all?
Combination of all, but mostly his control! David uses a very hard lead, Staedtler 2H, on Strathmore 200 series smooth Bristol paper which will give you a nice smooth surface to shade. His 30 years in the industry has a little something to do with it too! :D
The penciling is great, the inking is atrocious. It lacks personality, a distinctive confident style is missing... it lacks a unique, mature methodology.

For what it's worth, he uses 2mm Staedtler 2H leads with a Staedtler Mars 780 2mm drop clutch.
