Lost in Translation: Are Humans Really Desperately Wicked Sinners?

  • A Single verse of the Bible--Jeremiah 17:9, has been mistranslated and misapplied to millions over the past two thousand years to imply that humanity is hopelessly lost in sin, desperately wicked--and that means EVERYONE, even those who are living a righteous life.
What it really says is quite the opposite? As it turns out, it is the apostle Paul who has shaped the entire Christian world into the idea of the "total depravity " of all humankind.

We are all sinners, even the saints, he's watched as we've made a mess of everything, chose wrong and suffered dearly for it. Why would he punish us any further if he was a loving God. There's nothing impossible in the Lord our God. I believe he will save us all. I believe God will not allow a single solitary price of himself to be stolen by anything or anyone. He will come someday. And when he does he'll save us all. He'll make every last monster and angel we have on the earth pure and clean and purposeful again. Truly I do think that's true.

I knew when I got the Holy Spirit discernment 3 years ago when God humbled me to the floor when I was praying my heart out at home. I was laughing for hours from the joy unspeakable and I was changed forever. My anxiety was cured and my contempt gone. God helps me not be tempted to sin. I see it as suffering. I could never blame humans for being tricked and choosing wrong when I was no different. We all sinned but we are washed clean by the blood of Jesus and made saints.

Yes. Paul was the first apostle of the Antichrist.
In the first recounting of Paul being blinded, he states that they heard a voice but could not see anything.
Later before the sanhedrin he states that thy aw the light, but didn't hear anything.
So he said that they neither heard nor saw anything. The only witnesses he ever had of his encounter with "Christ", he lied about.
And the first thing he went about teaching was that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God. The trigger was the stoning of Stephen, when Steven saw the Son of Man seated at the throne. that was when Satan decided to create a division by saying Jesus was the son of God.

I have a New American Bible printed in 1970 that gives a translation of Jeremiah 17:9 as: More tortuous than all else is the human heart, beyond remedy; who can understand it?
Tortuous is defined as full of twists and turns, lengthy and complex, but a secondary definition is: marked by devious or indirect tactics; crooked, tricky.

En minä itsestäni voi mitään tehdä. Niinkuin minä kuulen, niin minä tuomitsen; ja minun tuomioni on oikea, sillä minä en kysy omaa tahtoani, vaan hänen tahtoaan, joka on minut lähettänyt" - Johannes 5:28,29,30 - Raamattu 1933/1938

  • @dougmartin9120

It looks as if the LXX translation ("desperately human"?) is the problem for the English editions you mention. The Hebrew rendered "wicked" is actually: 605. אָנַשׁ 'ānaš: A verb meaning to be sick, incurable, in poor health. It describes a weakened condition that can lead to death (2Sa 12:15;Job 34:6;Isa 17:11) or an incurable pain or ill health (Je 15:18).
The ESV renders the word "sick" -- "desperately sick". The implication, of course, is the same if the word is rendered "wicked". It's saying the human heart is pathological -- not healthy, not inclined to act in obedience to God. Which is the definition of "human", at least based on the empirical evidence of 4000 or so years of its history.

  • @PC-vg8vn
    @PC-vg8vn 23 дні тому +1

The issue largely comes down to the Hebrew word:
    אנש
If you pronounce the word as anush, it means "desperately sick". If you pronounce the word as enosh, it means "man". The Hebrew has the former, the Septuagint has the latter. Scholar Georg Walser believes the Septuagint translator made a mistake when translating the Hebrew to Greek.
This makes sense as surely the point Jeremiah is making is that people should trust God, not themselves. Why? Because the human heart is untrustworthy and deceitful. As Jesus said, only God is good.
As for implying that forgiveness or justification has nothing to do with sacrifice, you need to take into account ALL of Jesus' teaching.

Little children who, of such, are the Kingdom of Heaven and the contradiction of Jesus's message is outrageous. People live throughout their lives suffering psycological bullying from religons who effectively use mind control from an early age to validate their own importance and control, and people suffer very badly from it, particularly as they age. Even capitalism has hurt a lot more people than I think was anticipated. Most things that are supposed to make us healthy have made us unhealthy, pesticides, painkillers, antiobiotics, depression medicine.
Native Americans didn't have mental hospitals, prisons, drug rehans, concentration camps, nursing homes, lonliness, homelessness. All of that other stuff crept in because man thought it was "progress". Agriculture let to obesity, less exercise, wealth inequality, slavery.
We were meant to be hunter gatherers but thought "progress" was better. We didn't know what we are doing, and now we have diseases we can't cure and nuclear weapons and a poisoned envirnment and greed.

This scholar is trying to teach us and you are giving vague, unsubstantiated statements. The Old Testament says God is spirit, doesn't it? Like 800 years before? And sometimes God is not described as spirit.
Who put this "will" in us, or this mind? If we are decieving ourselves, who are we, which one? If we are decieved, who gets blamed? Why is anyone blamed? If God is our minds, that why is he letter us be decieved? If God is our consciousness is he involved in the deception? What does all this even mean?

Appreciate the help in translating and understanding that Jeremiah passage. It's weird that so many translations get it wrong "in the same direction" as they say. Is everyone just following the King James?
I think Paul's claim about us all being sinners fits well with the idea that the heart is deep and crooked and "human." I see Romans 3 as more of a plea for humility than a cosmic condemnation of the human race. Unfortunately, many theologians have interpreted Paul as condemning everyone including babies. However, I don't think Paul's main point is to present a "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" theology. Rather, I see him as arguing something like "If you judge others for their sinfulness, be aware that God will judge you by the same standard, and I'd be careful about that considering that we're all sinners." Do you think that's a fair interpretation of Paul?

The problem is precisely TRYING TO LIMIT THE WORDS TO ONE MEANING. The problem is not choosing the "wrong" meaning, the problem is choosing ONLY ONE of the meanings. It means many of them, all at the same time. The multi-levels messaging is intentional. Say what you will about Jeremiah, but he isn't shallow and he isn't careless. If he wants to say one thing and one thing only--- he will, never doubt it. If he uses words liek 'KV or ANSh, and these are polysemantic and polyvalent, HE'S DOING IT ON PURPOSE. Limiting the translation.... THAT'S the MISTAKE. Picking one of the meanings and ignoring all the others, THAT'S THE MISTRANSLATION.
THAT'S WHAT YOU"RE LOSING HERE. IT MEANS SEVERAL THINGS, ALL AT ONCE. AND THAT'S ON PURPOSE.
It's not even between the lines. THOSE ARE THE LINES.

It is concept that drives interpretation in a limited context, as 'Christianity' wants total depravity to allow their doctrine of free grace, but it is only free in the context of baptism, not a context of salvation. A concept based on a false theory of the Cross being an altar, to remove judgement for those who believe in this concept, but Paul insists on judgement but 'Christianity' insists the Cross overruled objective justification.
Of course Paul does not say all have sinned, the Greek for all is dependant on context, and the context means 'all that have sinned fall short of the glory of God'.
I have a Ytube video series 'Myths in so-called Christianity' for NT truth, as Christianity IS the false teaching warned of by Paul, whose letter to the Romans has the theme of repentance.

  • @nubtube7313
    @nubtube7313 21 день тому

Interesting reading Dr. Tabor, thank you. I am trying to see though how your interpretation accounts for people that don’t believe God exists, because the texts your reading recognize that all men have the capacity to do both good and evil, but also assume God exists. An essential part of repenting for your sins is a belief in God. Who are you repenting to if you don’t believe God exists? You pointed out that David repented for his sins, but you might have forgot to mention that he wasn’t going around proclaiming God doesn’t exist either. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord”…

    • @e.t.ethics1771
      @e.t.ethics1771 20 днів тому +1

Repentance has little to do with "god." True repentance is the conscience of the individual speaking up and letting itself be known.

    • @nubtube7313
      @nubtube7313 19 днів тому

@@e.t.ethics1771 I appreciate your point, but wonder if you understood mine? Sure if someone murders your family member, but then feels remorse and asks for forgiveness, you could as the surviving family forgive the murderer. But that is not the context of the discussion. More to the point, Dr. Tabor has made a weak case claiming something has been lost in translation when it really hasn’t.
In truth, all of the readings could be applied to the human condition. In reality human intentions are complex and deep, but all we have to do is watch the news to see how wicked man can be. Just when you think we hit rock bottom, someone figures out how to take the human race still lower. Who could know mass murder would be committed in Ukraine before Russia invaded?
The purpose behind those texts is not to debate whether human intentions are wicked, or just complex. The purpose is to make the reader think about the value of faith. How do you anchor your ship so that it does not drift out to sea and get lost? The answer is faith. We all have the capacity to do both good and evil, and faith is what keeps you leaning toward doing good.
Dr. Tabor asked, “So does the Hebrew bible say that nobody can be forgiven?… If you turn to God and repent your forgiven”. Does that mean man has no capacity to be wicked? No, it means faith in God can save you from your own wickedness if you truly want to be forgiven. If your repentance comes from your heart, your sins can be forgiven! There is nothing lost in translation here.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”
    ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6:7-8‬ ‭
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭3:3, 5-6‬ ‭

Just as the doctor needs people to get sick otherwise he would not be able to earn a living, the Church also needs sinful people to be able to provide intermediary services, although always temporary. Although they may seem to admire the saints, in reality they would not know what to do with them.
This is very complicated and it would be a very long discussion, so I'll stop here.

One of Paul's greatest "works" is in Romans chapter 7.
    Romans 7:15-20
15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.
16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good.
17 In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
19 For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do.
20 And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
That's right, Paul creates a living entity called "sin" that lives inside him and "sin" is responsible for the sin that Paul commits!

Excellent video! Thank you Dr. Tabor. Since studying the Hebrew Bible exclusively my eyes have been opened that there are righteous people and God loves the righteous. I also understand what true repentance is AND like you said no blood sacrifice is needed. Look at Soloman's prayer in 1 Kings 8....it's beautiful.

Translators always "theologize" the text. For example, Jesus's utterance in John 20:22 is really "receive holy spirit", not "receive THE Holy Spirit". (After all, a human being cannot blow a person of the Godhead on the face of people.) Because of such mistranslations, the poetic and deep psychological meaning of the text is lost.
Anyway, the concept that mankind is plagued by sin is ubiquitous in traditional religion. The Aztecs made sacrifices of propitiation. In the initiation rites of Australian aborigines, and in the Greek Eleusinian mysteries, people were "reborn" as new infants, free of sin. In Tahiti people sought atonement from sin by sacrifice to Oro. In Greece the Pharmakos took upon himself the city's load of sin. People have always had an awareness of sin. It belongs in human psychology and is necessary for the maturation process. We mustn't downplay the enormously important concept of sin.

I agree the saved heart is not wicked and I know the translation does not mean wicked but we can not say we do not believe Paul and believe Jesus. If you meet Jesus you will see your pride and the sins of your heart. Once we are saved and know Jesus it is impossible to feel shame. You got to get to know more of the bible. The video started out right but you got confused about the guilt trip part. That is wrong as the Bible does not guilt trip us that way. That is our fault if we feel that way. If we lust we sin. If we gossip or have contempt in our hearts or a resentment we sinned against Jesus and the 2 commandments he gave us. We are to love others as he loves them. We need his help and that is why we are to worship and get filled. Sing to him with all your heart, soul, and mind and then you can love others as Jesus loves them he told us. He will manifest into us if we love him and keep his commandments. We need the Holy Spirit anointing to understand the Bible fully and to read what God writes on our hearts.

No. And if you want to "get Biblical", Paul quoted Isaiah 64:6 out of context, which was for was for a particular place and time. Having said that, most of the "faults" that humans express are quite necessary for the survival of the species. Including sociopathic traits. (Who better to send into war for the tribe, than people who can kill without conscience?) It's not an "ideal" situation, but individually and tribally, human "faults" are necessary for survival of the species. If there is a creator, the creator set it up this way.

THE FUTURE MESSIANIC AGE, WE ARE SAVED WITH JUDGMENT AND MERCY; NOT THROUGH THE BLOOD OF A MESSIAH.
    Isaiah 1:24-31
24 Therefore this saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, Woe to the mighty men of Israel: for MY WRATH SHALL NOT CEASE AGAINST MY ADVERSARIES, and I WILL EXECUTE JUDGMENT ON MINE ENEMIES.
25 And I will bring my hand upon thee, and PURGE THEE COMPLETELY, and I will destroy the rebellious, and will take from thee all transgressors.
26 And I will establish THY JUDGES as before, and THY COUNSELORS as at the beginning: and afterward thou shalt be called the city of righteousness, the faithful mother-city Sion.
27 FOR HER CAPTIVES SHALL BE SAVED WITH JUDGEMENT, and with MERCY.
28 And the transgressors and the sinners shall be crushed together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be utterly consumed.
29 For they shall be ashamed of their IDOLS, which they delighted in, and they are made ashamed of the gardens which they coveted.
30 For they shall be as a turpentine tree that has cast its leaves, and as a garden that has no water.

There are people including Noah in the Bible who had only as their motive LOVE in their hearts for God and Fellow Humankind. Even today there are people born this way. Their hearts are not full of deceit and wickedness. To refer to all hearts as wicked / deceptive is not correct as this video perceives. Noah had favour in the eyes of the Lord, righteous, blameless in his generation, and walking with God. His heart was right before God. Enoch is another like Noah.

Our history and violence toward one another testifies too strongly against it. Speaking of the heart he says , how can anything that is constructed of such "crooked" timber produce anything that is entirely straight.

*Do you remember reading the following phrases in your KJV bible? "Holy of Holies" or "Judge not lest ye be judged"? How about ''Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Or the words "demons'' and ''wineskins''?*
*Well those words are not written in any KJV now, no matter how old it is!*
*What The Father has spoken will never change, His promises are still good and our prayers are still answered! Hallelujah!!! But as impossible as this sounds, like so many of the true stories in scripture, our bibles have all been supernaturally changed by Satan in the last several years, right in our homes, in the fulfillment of prophecy. It's being done to prepare for the reign of the antichrist. All languages and all translations have been changed along with concordances, encyclopedias, dictionaries, history books, the original Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Aramaic manuscripts. Even the Dead Sea Scrolls have been changed!*
*I'm 71, was saved when I was 10, and have read only the exact same copy of the King James bible my church gave me in 1961. (This does not mean I was a King James onlyist but now I'm glad I never read other ones or I might not have noticed the changes as soon.) I had memorized many scriptures from it through the years. Then in 2014 I started seeing changes in it that I couldn't explain. I had never owned a computer or heard of the ''Mandela Effect'' back then. But after being given my first computer in 2016 I finally found out why I had been noticing all of these oddities. I then started diligently studying what should actually have been called the "Daniel 7:25 effect". That's where God said He would give the antichrist the power to do this. (Change times and laws, history and scripture) We're seeing many end time prophecies being fulfilled SUPERNATURALLY! This is some of the "lying signs and wonders" God told us He would give the AC power to perform which would even deceive His very elect, if it were possible in 2nd Thessalonians chapter two!*
*God said in the end of days, (NOW!) that He would send us a famine for hearing His words in Amos **8:11** and that He would give the antichrist the ability to do this in Daniel 7:25. In Daniel 12:4 & 12:9 He told him to seal his book until the end days. He told John **_not_** to seal his book because the end time is at hand in Revelation 22:10. One of the Greek definitions of ''seal'' in Strongs concordance is “to protect from Satan”. He also told us to “hide His words in our hearts”, which meant memorize, if not word for word at least the essence of what was written, because He knew this was going to happen.*
*God commanded us to "prove all things", and people **_better_** obey Him, especially on this subject. I urge you to research this. There are many brothers and sisters making videos about the changes with more proof of what was originally written and I have lots more about this in my playlist 👉 which can be found by typing in (PROOF OF BIBLE CHANGE RESIDUE JUNKIE 1)* 👈
*I've continued to stay in God's word by reading what has been documented to be what used to be written and what Satan has been changing. Soon Amos **8:12** will be fulfilled too and we won't be able to find God's word anymore, and the only way it can happen is by not being able to see these videos and PDF written lists of documented changes like the one at (amos)(8)(.)(org)*
*May God bless all who read this with eyes to see this incredible faith strengthener, and how close we are to our Saviour's return!!!!*
*P.S. Everyone is going to learn about this one way or the other. I'm just trying to keep so many people from hearing Jesus explain it to them at the Gate. If you ask for them at the address on my about page I will send you links for 17 films that absolutely prove the snake bite is the mark. And yt hates me, they won't notify me of replies and won't post my answers so write me at residue junkie in one word at g mail for lots more info yt would never allow you to see.*

The meaning of the Hebrew here has largely been adapted from the Latin Vulgate meaning of the heart in this verse (which was (wrongly) described as perverse). There are words like that in the Bible where meaning has been adopted as a result of usage in the Bible (in other words - it means such and such because it's written like that in thousands of Bibles). Instead of trying to find an original source (which apparently) has been lacking. However if we look at the Greek Septuagint (which PAUL quoted from By the way), you can infer what they at that time understood the meaning to be. So far from this guy being a fraud, I'd say mankind through wrong inference of the Hebrew word and apparently wanting to match Paul's doctrine (in contradiction to Jesus who spoke of Abel as being righteous (who certainly didn't have a deceptive/wicked/perverse heart), has been totally defrauded by the wrong translation that only seems to be coming to light now (and we find out truthfully that the heart is NOT wicked/full of deceit) - maybe for a lot of people they want to say their hearts are like that but certainly not everyone has hearts like that.

From Matthew 9.13, "Go learn what this means: 'I want mercy not sacrifice'. . ." (From Hosea 6.6)
Later in Matthew 12.7 Yeshua reasserts, "Had you learned what this means: 'I want mercy not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent."
"Mercy" in Matthew 9.13 and 12.7 comes from the Greek "eleos," which happens to be the same root word used in James 2.13 ('Mercy triumphs over judgement') and 3.17 (concerning 'Heavenly Wisdom')
In the narrative Yeshua pretty much emphasizes the importance of the meaning of Hosea 6.6 - wherein the English mercy comes from the Hebrew "Chesed."
The Lev is tortuous (NOT torturous, like Luther's famous suffering of torture consciousness ["Anfechtungen"]
and severe penances as a monk - rather tor-tu-ous) is an amenable English translation of the Hebrew "Aqov" (the same root for Ya'acovs name as you pointed around 7:00) in Yeremyahu 17.9. Though I was not aware of the Greek LXX use Batheia and Anthropos - which affirms the use of Anush as it relates to the word Enosh for human (as with Ezra and Daniel). Thanks for sharing. Well put.
