Agnikanya Kalpana Dutta : A Documentary on freedom fighter Kalpana Dutta

Kalpana Dutta was a firebrand revolutionary associated with the ‘Indian Republican Army’, a revolutionary party led by Surya Sen who was instrumental in leading the great Chittagong uprising against the British rule.Kalpana was born on 27 July 1913 in Shripur, a small village in Chittagong district of the Bengal province in British India.She was a brilliant student of Dr. Khastagir Girls High School and passed matriculation with letter marks in Mathematics and Sanskrit.She got admitted to Bethune College,Calcutta and became a member of ‘Chatri Sangha’ a revolutionary student wing formed by Kalyani Das.Kalpana learned to play Stick and Dagger in Simla Byam Samiti.While studying in college ,Kalpana became familiar with Purnendu Dastidar who was a close associate of the Indian Republican Army of Chittagong branch.Kalpana started to supply cover of Bombs to the revolutionaries at Chiittagong.After Chittagong Armoury Raid, Kalpana went to Chittagong and joined the Indian Republican Army of Chittagong branch.She passed her Intermediate Examination from Chittagong.Initially Kalpana and Pritilata Waddedar were deployed to attack the European Club of Paharatali at the behest of the Indian Republic Army.But a week before the attack Kalpana was arrested by the Police.She went into hiding after her release on bail. On 16 February 1933, the police encircled their hiding place in Gairala village. During this raid, Surya Sen was arrested but Kalpana managed to escape.Kalpana alongwith Tarakeshwar Dastidar and Sudhindra Das were finally arrested on 18 May 1933 from Gahira village. In the second supplementary trial of the Chittagong armoury raid case, Kalpana was sentenced to transportation for life,while Surya Sen and Tarakeshwar Dastidar were sentenced to death. Kalpana was released in 1939 upon intervention of personalities like Mahatma Gandhi,Rabindranath Tagore and C.F. Andrews. After that Kalpana got admitted in Calcutta University in 1940 and joined the Communist Party of India. She served as a relief worker during the 1943 Bengal famine and during the Partition of Bengal.She got married to Puran Chand Joshi,the then General Secretary of CPI. Later she joined the Indian Statistical Institute,Calcutta where she worked until her retirement. She breathed her last on 8 February 1995.
