You should have actually arrived in the U.S. in September-October, the beautiful fall weather with orange/yellow trees all over the Midwest and northern part of the U.S. and Canada.
You must also travel by the Amtrak (federal-governed-owned) and metro trains in New York City and Chicago. New York City may be little filthy. If you really want to enjoy the beauty of the U.S., you must either drive from Chicago to various cities and/or Amtrak train(s) from Chicago to Seattle (the train is Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle).
There are Malayali associations and Indian (north/Kerala) restaurants in most metro cities. If you have no contacts in some cities, you could contact the Malayali associations or Kerala temple/church (Orthodox, Marthoma, Zero Malabar, Pentacostal or IPC), groups for guidance and assistance. So, have fun of the world's largest economy. I am writing this with my 42-state (out of 50) travel by road which covered almost all major cities.
