As someone else said, she should be directing her scorn at the former Belgian PM, who should have decided with her on the spot to just walk out. Don't play victim Olympics: you are not Meghan Markle.
I don't understand the comment section? Why are you arguing that she is "whining"? She is the President of the EU Commission for heaven's sake. What happened is the equivalent of a diplomatic incident. It was an insult. Imagine Biden or Xi Jinping being put in a similar situation? It was a disgrace and evidently planned by Erdogan to ridicule the EU delegation. I won't even comment on the absolute lack of spine of Charles Michel, defending his actions when he should have remained standing in solidarity with Ursula. It would have been a display of strength, contrary to what he argues, and wouldn't have torpedoed the previous agreements. Instead, he decided to bow to Erdogan. What a disgrace.
They gave her the best seat in the house; a nice, lofty sofa. I don't see what there is to complain about & how she deduced the "situation" on being a woman.
She should have got up and walked out and I have to say I'm surprised she didn't, Erdogan he needs to learn some manners, Turkey needs a strong rebuttal.
Reviewing the comments below, I am struck by the mysogynic views against Ursula. If anyone truly cares to listen, she is not really talking about herself; she is talking as the President of the EU and a woman. As the President of EU and as per the common sensical protocol, she should have been the one seated at one of the two main chairs, period! It does not matter if she did not respect Theresa May (not sure if that story hinted by someone in the comments is a planted one or not); or any other matter. She is the President legally appointed or elected; and that position must be honored, be it a man or woman or third gender. That is non-negotiable. Now, why she was relegated to the second position, as she has rightly concluded, is because of her gender. And that is an issue that MUST be addressed. And, everyone deserves basic respect and dignity as a human being. So, no point in shouting her down, badmouthing her, or any such comments - they only prove her point and reveal the mysogyny we still carry as a society.
How do you figure that? It's no ones fault but her own that she was too slow to nab the chair and let her colleague sit thier instead of her. If anything she should have a problem with her colleague.
@@barnaby4232 No mate that's just how these meetings go, every meeting with any world leader thats going to be televised has two chairs facing the media and thier camera men. It's absolutely normal. @@spinsaw not when there's multiple leader meeting, in a previous meeting with the people holding these three positions there was three chairs, his Time there was two. Why? They wanted to send a message.
Why is she only addressing this now?! If Donald Tusk was also subjected to such treatment, is it still sexist? In any case, Turkey just keeps proving why they should not be allowed to join the EU.
There's nothing with Turkey here. It's sole competition between 2 high level members of European Parliament and Council of Europe. They acted seperately, they didn't confirm the protocol with each other, and all happened. Turkey is not to blame, at all!
If Donald Tusk was subjected to such treatment it could not have been described as sexist. But the fact is he was not treated that way, but she was. So I don't really understand the point tbh. Could you explain? And I believe she adresses it now, because in politics things you say should be thought through. Affective statements in heated up situation might be counter-productive.
@@umi1903 No. It is both things. Turkey created the snub, and her colleague went along with it, because his views are as backward as the Turkish organisers.

This is a tragedy, why couldn’t they have found a throne for her to sit on? I sat on a sofa once and can confirm it is a dreadful experience, my heart goes out too her.
I'm genuinely very confused can somebody explain? She sat on a sofa... The sofa looks kinda comfortable, and some other people are sitting down. I dont understand...
She is the EU Commission president, not "some other person". Other EU Commission Presidents were always offered a seat when invited with the EU council President to Turkey, she is the first one not to be offered a seat.
For some people here who have no idea about politics: she is the european leader and not a minister like the guy at the other sofa. that is the fact. it´s for americans like putting their president on a sofa instead of the "talking seats". that was even at the time, when erdogan decided to cut some of the womens right in turkey.
I would rather have a sofa lol. Looked a lot more comfortable. O well you would think Brussels would have more serious matters to worry about than a chair.
Even v. der Leyen's predecessor Jean-Claude Juncker, according to his own statement, sometimes sat on the sofa "in the second row" when the former EU Council President was invited. The EU protocol stipulates that "from a protocol point of view, the Council President comes first, and the head of the Commission second." Nevertheless, v. d. Leyen was surprised. It is a bit as if, during a state visit to the USA, Mr. Steinmeier would be seated as the President of Germany next to the President of the United States and Merkel would have to take her seat on the sofa. In terms of protocol, that would be correct. The diplomatic EU protocol is the main culprit in this "affair".
She complains about a chair and expects the world to listen yet she is the first to dismiss anything which doesn't not benefit her politically. Shame, ironic, karma
@@public.public Never said war was funny, I find it funny she's making a big deal out of these when if she went to the chair first one of the men would probably have to sit on the sofa alone.
I dont get it. Equal right that we all fought for means she didn't "deserve" a seat. They could have moved for her if they wanted to. The chose not to, which is fine
Not so sure. The way Europe has dangled membership in front of Turkey for years and then withdrew the option, would be sufficient justification for any president of the EU to be snubbed, regardless of gender.
What a load of rubbish, the spare chair didn't have "Reserved for Charles Michel" on it. She could have equally been the one to sit there if she had arrived first. Would we then have a major news item about why the man was left to sit on the sofa, Nope. It's really convenient though when she's under fire for the whole vaccine handling mess, that she deflects the conversation to this...laughable.

As someone else said, she should be directing her scorn at the former Belgian PM, who should have decided with her on the spot to just walk out. Don't play victim Olympics: you are not Meghan Markle.
did you even watch the rest of the video? she DID! thats why he gave his 'apology' at the end
What's she moaning about, she got the best seat in the house, the sofa 👍🏻
I totally agree
EU is such a weak state. Any real leader would have walked out at such an insult.
QUICK!! HURRY!!! WHERE'S MY TINY VIOLIN?!?
Oh please!
Poor you, who didn't get a chair. Seriously stop the woman label and move on. Sorry it hurt your massive ego.
........and as a European...............ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Hello
Bwahahahahaha, a press conference because her fee fees were hurt. Pathetic
Lovely fees
Absolutely disgusting!
They gave her the best seat in the house; a nice, lofty sofa. I don't see what there is to complain about & how she deduced the "situation" on being a woman.
what a tough guy
Ursula von der Leyen is married to Heiko von der Leyen. Now there's a match made in ...
What about the poor guy on the other sofa?
His was heated from the underside 😂🤣
"I felt hurt and I felt alone" Exactly, and thats the reason why most female incl. Ursula are not suitable in leading positions.
You wanted equality, can't complain about the outcome no one would get up if a man needed to sit down
I'd say a sofa is more comfortable than a chair. But I understand, this is an issue about power struggles.
Salty
Bro you just wrote a whole paragraph about a woman sitting on a couch. This whole thing is ridiculous.
As silly as it is, I do think it was a snub and an insult, it was intentional, she’s right to speak about it.
How do you figure that? It's no ones fault but her own that she was too slow to nab the chair and let her colleague sit thier instead of her. If anything she should have a problem with her colleague.
@@spinsaw they purposely only put out two seats, these kind of things are planned in advance, there was clearly bad intent behind it.
@@barnaby4232 No mate that's just how these meetings go, every meeting with any world leader thats going to be televised has two chairs facing the media and thier camera men. It's absolutely normal. The leaders (in this case Ursla) are supposed to sit in those chairs while thier underlings sit off to the side. Like I said it's not anyone's fault but her colleagues he should have stood back and let her have her seat next to Erdogan.
@@spinsaw not when there's multiple leader meeting, in a previous meeting with the people holding these three positions there was three chairs, his Time there was two. Why? They wanted to send a message.
She is absolutly right, she represents the institution.
Honestly, its a human right not to like someone. Its not nice but thats the world we're in.
“A snake’ as a hissing snake” this is how I felt I should be treated
All those non-german defending Ursula.
@Kev Burrows I never said that. I didn't even call it sexist. He just asked a question, that was easily answerable. What are you even doing here when you obviously do not seem to be interested in a constructive discussion.
I could ask myself that same question though.
So as a woman, she want to get sympathy from people? I knew that man and woman should have same right. Then why is she constantly saying that "as a woman, as a woman,...."?🤔🤔
If she can’t earn respect she doesn’t deserve it
You think you deserve respect? Think again.
@@public.public no he doesn't because he hasn't earned your respect, just like she hasn't earned his, you've missed the point there
This is a tragedy, why couldn’t they have found a throne for her to sit on? I sat on a sofa once and can confirm it is a dreadful experience, my heart goes out too her.
Should have grown a backbone, both her and the man should have said something then and there rather than go along with it
I felt hurt as a woman is anyone responsible for how you feel
Nope. Did she say that?
@@rugbyslug I felt hurt as a woman and as a European watch the video.
Diddums!
Got the tyrant's treatment, deserved it
Exactly
who'd have thought a sofa could be an elephant trap?
YOU TELL EM FRAULEIN....WOMEN IN POLITICS DESERVE MORE RESPECT
Poor thing. She's so brave speaking out. Fighting for women all over the world who have to sit on comfy sofas. Nobel peace prize awaits!
I think she found it difficult not being the center of attention. SHE IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION DONT YOU KNOW.
If I had as much money as she has ego, Jeff Bezos would work for me.
I like this. I'm going to use it at some point.
She did not feel “hurt” she felt ffing livid for not getting the princess treatment
They have , but they don’t, which is why they are in a mess.
Even v. der Leyen's predecessor Jean-Claude Juncker, according to his own statement, sometimes sat on the sofa "in the second row" when the former EU Council President was invited. The EU protocol stipulates that "from a protocol point of view, the Council President comes first, and the head of the Commission second."
Nevertheless, v.
Lol what a whinner sofa is more comfortable anyway
Yo turkey please make this crying madame a gift with a huge golden couch
She complains about a chair and expects the world to listen yet she is the first to dismiss anything which doesn't not benefit her politically. Shame, ironic, karma
Are we going to war because of this now lol
because war is funny?
It is a problem for everyone when a diplomat doesn't have diplomatic skills.
Michel is in the wrong job.
@@public.public Never said war was funny, I find it funny she's making a big deal out of these when if she went to the chair first one of the men would probably have to sit on the sofa alone.
You are totally missing the point. Totally ignorant!
@@gentianminga3961 and what is the point
War of the Sofas
Hahahahahaha serves her right.....it's not because your a woman it's because your not respected lmbo
You really felt alone?? Go to your husband or boyfriend to comfort you. Mr Erdogan is a married man ...
I dont get it. Equal right that we all fought for means she didn't "deserve" a seat. They could have moved for her if they wanted to. The chose not to, which is fine
well, you shouldn’t expect that respect would come from the fact you where a woman.
it's a fancy sofa and yet she complained like she was getting stones casted upon her direction
Not so sure. The way Europe has dangled membership in front of Turkey for years and then withdrew the option, would be sufficient justification for any president of the EU to be snubbed, regardless of gender.
Glad to be out of it! so petty.
Get a grip 😩
Feminism= equal rights, her colleague got there first so it's only right that she takes the bench
You really think that's how the seating works? Her colleague ran up and grabbed that chair? Complete idiocy. Where do we start?
What a load of rubbish, the spare chair didn't have "Reserved for Charles Michel" on it. She could have equally been the one to sit there if she had arrived first. Would we then have a major news item about why the man was left to sit on the sofa, Nope. It's really convenient though when she's under fire for the whole vaccine handling mess, that she deflects the conversation to this...laughable.
She can't deflect the deaths she's responsible for by her incompetence I hope when all the Eu members meet again there's no seat for her maybe then she'll get the massage loud and clear.
She's right tho.
