Yeah that's kinda the point. I believe that characters can change depending on time that passes, like how myths and urban legends change as they are retold. I don't let a different interpretation of a character influence how much I like a movie as long as the movie is enjoyable.
Granted this movie could have and probably would have been a lot better it it was just an original story.
I personally like cruella as a standalone movie more than I 101 Dalmatians prequel. The original cruella was bad for seemingly no reason but that's all she needed to be in context of the original movies.

I can make a joke like there will be a bewitched show reboot and this one character will be made gay just because the previous actor of the same character sounded what we consider today be gay and they'll perpetuate that stereotype just so they can act like they're justified making the switch despite acting like they're so against stereotypes

For me, it's the weird obsession that people have with having to make a villain sympathetic or misunderstood. Sometimes, people are just trash and for a story, that's all we need. We know Cruella is going to grow old, kill a bunch of animals for their fur, steal folks puppies for that same purpose, and just be a lousy person. LIke, what is the point of trying to get us to feel bad or root for her when we know what she's going to be. Prequels can work, but I'm just exhausted with these live action Disney movie remakes and if people don't have some self control and not watch, we'll keep getting them.

    • @blerksnarfgut2766
      @blerksnarfgut2766 3 роки тому +54

Exactly! I'm not sure what the ultimate goal was in trying to make Maleficent good because it just meant another character (King Stefan) got to be the villain, or now with Cruella De Vil, in transferring the villainy from Cruella to the Baroness. Someone's always got to be the bad guy so why not just leave the bad guys as they were in their original stories/movies? Making evil characters good in no way makes them more interesting imo, it just makes things unnecessarily confusing when comparing the original version of a villain with the new good guy version because plot points or characteristics are either altered or eliminated completely. It's stupid.

    • @darlalathan6143
      @darlalathan6143 3 роки тому +13

I think the reasons are "gangsta" media, cynicism and true crime documentaries. Lots of people identified with Robin Hood-type bandits, Wild West outlaws and Caribbean pirates in legends, dime novels, pulps and movies, for robbing the rich and giving to the poor. After Prohibition and the Great Depression, movie audiences admired gangsters in movies for macho violence, rebelling against puritanical authority and rising from rags-to-riches, selling bootleg alcohol to a 70% drinker population. Half of all adults were bullied in childhood, so many people admire Solo Armies as role models. Lots of people lost their homes and businesses to bank panics or foreclosure, so they looked up to bank robbers as their role models. This is why normal human villains are getting sympathetic origin stories and the "antihero" status. Rebellion and wish-fulfillment. Watergate , Vietnam War and the War On Drugs turned much of the public against the government, and caused an increase in gangster (especially Mafia and Latinx drug cartel) movies, for their ethnic crime bosses' rise to wealth and power. Part of drug dealers' appeal is that 70% of USA population have tried marijuana and 60% of our prison population are nonviolent first-time drug users. "Gangsta " rap is a style of music with gangster and juvenile delinquent movie lyrics, by former gang bangers and drug dealers turned rich celebrity musicians from marginalized groups. It appeals to both poor and middle class young people, due to the above wish fulfillment, rebellion and suburban boredom. The true crime mystery genre often shows the origins of famous criminals, such as gangsters and serial killers, who attract audience morbid curiosity with their rare extreme violence and mental health issues. Poverty and child abuse are very common origins of real-life offenders. Ethnic oppression and mental illness are very sympathetic motives in a multicultural society with a 25% neurodiverse population. The latter reason is part of the appeal of psychological thrillers, which show the mental illness or rather, stress-related violence of serial killers. Fractured Fairy Tales, such as Maleficent, "Wicked" and now "Cruella" come from increasing public knowledge via the internet, of the original, pre-Disney versions of fairy tales, which all children's fantasy media are based on. Fairy tales used to be gory Cautionary Tales about nursery bogies, such as Big Bad Wolves, Wicked Witches and Evil Stepmothers, for adults and later pre-teen children to Scare 'Em Straight, so they wouldn't wander off into the woods and risk animal attack, highway robbery, drowning in waterways or serial killers. Cynical audiences may disbelieve their childhood moral lessons in these old stories and identify more with the villains and monsters. They may also sympathize with wolves and witches because of environmentalism and neopaganism. Wolves are an endangered species. Witch hunts killed large numbers of innocent women as scapegoats for crop failures, erectile dysfunction, due to religious fundamentalists.

One thing that irritates me also is that these origin stories so often focus on petty personal rivalries and how specific traumas shape people but it carefully elides the broader social and class context. The old 101 Dalmatians actually had more of a class element than the prequel. If Emma stone is going to become to woman in the animation, she also has to have those same mannerisms ,. Of all the reasons this live action remake trend is bad, two stand out to me: First, they feel like they're scrabbling. Is this project about sympathetic villain backstories, like Maleficent? Is it straight remakes with a few tweaks, like Aladdin? Is it completely alternate versions, like Mulan? Honestly, I think the straight remakes are the "best," simply because they don't weirdly butcher the stories, which leads me to the Maleficient-Cruella Problem: If you're going to make a prequel movie about the villain, why not just DO THAT? The dumb dalmation murder plot point almost makes sense if they ACTUALLY have Cruella turn the dogs into a coat as revenge, but they can't do that, because that ruins the kid-friendly girl boss thing they're going for.
But if they really feel the need to make it kid-friendly & sympathetic, just pick another villain. Dr. Facilier, for instance, has that backstory they want. He's someone who grew up poor & turned to his "friends on the other side" to get rich. There's even convoluted but unexplored lore with his mother you could build around, with one version of the script saying he's Mama Odie's son &, of course, the line in the movie implying he had a distant royal connection with a mother whose head he shrunk. That sounds like a really interesting story can be built around that! And he's definitely dripping with 1920's style. Want something more modern? No problem, forget the prequel thing, make it a sequel where he gets out of the underworld in modern times! My point here is, PAY ME MONEY, DISNEY!

There is also a book out there that is is an imagined prequel to Peter Pan, centering Captain Hook that genuinely works. They literally only need to require the rights. Peter Pan is considered as a tale of the selfishness of childhood and he doesn't understands things like how the lost boys needed their parents. In this story, those elements are much more played into.
Hook was actually a lost boy, implied to be the first and was the closest thing the other boys had to a responsible older brother. Peter's selfishness for wanting playmates on an actually very dangerous island often led to various boys getting killed. Hook was the one who did things like burying the other kids and it has taken a toll on him. Then Peter brings in a boy who is about 4. Obviously he's too young to survive on Neverland and Peter tries to get him killed in a game several times. That was the final straw for Hook and he slowly grew disillusioned with Peter.
Then after another massacre diminished the number of lost boys Peter brought in a few more. Amongst them is actually a girl who's been pretending to be a boy and binding her developping chest because back in those days it was easier to survive as a boy on the streets. After the truth comes out and the remaining lost boys along with Hook start treating her like a girl, she and Hook fall for one another. They begin dreaming of escaping Neverland together and taking the little boy with them to form a family back in the real world which is overheard by Tinkerbell.
She rats them out, their escape plan gets destroyed and a rebellion starts. Hook, the girl and the other boys end up killing all fairies as well as a species of gigantic spiders that used to live on Neverland so they can save the little boy from the spiders only to find themselves being hunted down by Peter. Aside from the little boy, only one other lost boy then Hook makes it out alive and the girl was eaten alive by the crocodile because Peter quite literally throws them to the animal as a feast.
Peter curses Hook with immortality and to be trapped on the island forever as an adult. Because if Hook doesn't wants to be his best friend, then he will play with Hook as an enemy. Hook, the 4 year old and the last surviving lost boy join the pirates, dead set on revenge. Hook continues to say that he doesn't cares about killing kids, just one in particular and that as time passed, Peter went on to treat the new lost boys better like occasionally allowing someone to go back home but sometimes Peter still will be his old self and not care when kids are dying (as Hook's rebellion did serve as a lesson for Peter).
Now that was an imagined backstory for Hook that actually made sense for both charracters and the story in general. Peter being a neglicent, selfish little shit is already canon so previous lost boys having turnt on him after a series of tragedies genuinely sounds plausible on it's own, even without Hook having been one. But making Hook their leader does fit his character and fleshes out why he hates Peter with a burning passion.

This movie had the exact same problem that Joker did, except that the Joker character has been re-written so many times that it doesn't matter if someone comes up with a whole new version of it. In Cruella's case, the problem is far more obvious because the character is so straight forward that people right away felt disoriented with this interpretation.

While Arthur Fleck didn't fall into the same Vat, he no doubt became Joker through his experiences with Society and its indifference towards him.
The Joker Movie was just that, tell us another story of "What" could've been his Origin, the only thing is, that instead of them trying to make this version of Joker be its own thing. Its still tied into the narrative with Batman.

The film doesn't work because of the source material it's drawing from, end of story. Had this been an original property, it COULD have worked but 101 Dalmatians was a book before it was a movie, and the character really isn't open to interpretation at all. She's statically, immovably, irredeemably evil in the established canon. She's SUPPOSED to be one-dimensional. That's the point. You can't make that mesh with this and have it make sense and it shows. If you enjoyed the film and think Emma Stone did a great job, that's fine, but the fact that it's a misguided film that doesn't make sense isn't a matter of opinion.

101 dalmatians is a kids movie.
It establishes a basic moral guideline through character interactions.
This is not a character or person driven plot.
So any attempt to add a third dimension is futile.
The characters are representations of human actions or behaviours taken to hyperbole.
The characters are a set of archetypes used convey a complex set of emotions and behaviours.
      Each character has a purpose.
Cruelas purpose is to be the villain. The example of bad human behaviour taken to it's extreme.
So why humanize the literal depiction of evil?

The likes of Blade, X-men, Spiderman, Ironman, the Second Fantastic Four movie (not the 1st or the Reboot). They all were varying levels of Great to good, that's not to say they were perfect. But I felt more genuine effort going into some of these films than most.
I Will admit, we Got Stinkers in the Line-up, From Daredevil, Some of the X-Men Sequels, the Fantastic 4 films, Hulk's First solo movie, ELEKTRA! (oh god, that film was bad). And Captain Marvel.
I won't put Thor The Dark World, Avengers 2, or Antman or Dr. Strange into the bad category, mainly due to those films being pieces to a much grander story, and I generally do like that they are just precursors Events that were building up for Civil War, Infinity War & Endgame respectively! It took alot of planning and group think to get there and and I don't blame Kevin, the various Directors or the Rest of the Marvel Movie Staffers for some of the choices they had to make, but as a whole, the films really have become a universe all on their own!
So when I hear people Attacking the Marvel Universe and calling it bland and/or a Disappointment. Cruella only wants to kill the dalmatian puppies just so that she can make them in to a fur coat, because she's obsessed with furs, they're practically her religion. Kind of like how dr.doofenshmirtz although had a very tragic childhood, is still portrayed as extremely evil and absurd in his ideas. Also, why not make her growing obsession with fur a part of the movie? As long as the movie doesn't treat it at something ethical, it would immensely improve the quality and complexity of the character.

It takes place in the 70s, Cruella was born with that black and white hair🤨, she isn't rich and had to start from the bottom. Anita is a reporter, her childhood best friend and she's black. Jasper is also black (and pretty cute ngl 😏) and with Horace, are now Cruella's kind of adoptive family. Etc.

I think the reason for all this discourse about movies is that filmmaking is a business, movies are a product movie studios make for fans or customers. Bad B movies are a quality-control issue for consumers. When one pays for movie tickets, popcorn and colas, one expects to see a fun movie. Poor scripts, acting, special effects or ethnic stereotypes spoil the customer's experience with the product or service of entertaining them. Movies and other film media are one-way communication, so studios can only tell what viewers want to see by examining old movies or their greatest hits, hence all new movies are sequels, prequels or remakes of older media, such as cartoons, comics, video games and television shows.

Outside of Marlficent’s love for Aurora and the Moors v Ulstead Subplot, the basic plot line of the movie remains relatively the same.
And both those changes affect Maleficent because it gives us a reason to care about her. She lost her wings and her friend. She has every reason to hate humanity in that film. Which is what makes her choice to help Aurora that much more meaningful.

I like this movie a lot, however, it does fail as prequel. There's no way that this version of Cruella turns into cruella from 101. But on its own this movie was fun for me. I thought Emma Stone was great and while Cruella isnt a dog killer in this she's not like an angel or anything

This is exactly how I feel about solo, it’s a good movie but it’s just strictly worse because it’s trying so hard to be a prequel for a character that definitely doesn’t need one

@@ThePonderer you say that, but nothing the Cruella movie did tried to separate the two films. The video present gives a pretty comprehensive look on where the movie fails as a prequel and where it is only passable as a standalone experience. Disney does not care about its IPs, as they DID market this movie as a prequel to the 101 Dalmatians animated film. You can't just ignore the function of a film. That's like saying the Star Wars prequels films aren't intended to be watched as prequels or that the Disney sequels are just new reimaginings of the same characters.

The movie does a lot of things so well, and it's well executed, the pacing is good and the characters are interesting, and don't get me started with the photography, makeup and vestuary. It's really a joy to watch. It's far from perfect but I do really and honestly think this movie deserves more than this.

Because it is set up by Disney to be a prequel, and it restricted the possibility of the scriptwriter and producer turning it into a better movie. In the end, Cruella will be the villain who hunt dogs no matter what perspective this movie is trying to change.
Basically it would have been a great movie if it borrows the name and that's it.

Is it just me ... or did the "what if the villain was actually sympathetic, as a prequel would establish" genre start with the Broadway musical Wicked? Wicked (while getting some mixed reviews) was good, but it was also campy as hell. It featured hyper-polished-Disney-esque songs, some funny dialogue, and enough winks to let you know that it knew it was absurd (it also portrayed the Witch/Elphaba as concededly having a bit of a dramatic breakdown, explaining the harsher Wizard of Oz lines).
Toe expand on the great point you made here: the start and end problem with Cruella the animal killer is that an animal killer-a killer of literal puppies-is basically as irredeemable as you can get in a children's movie. It would've taken an exceedingly clever bit of writing to contextualize that in a way that wouldn't make you hate the character-and Cruella didn't do that ... the "dalmatians killed my mom" plot ... definitely didn't work. And, ultimately, the strain that the writers clearly felt to connect the film to 101 Dalmatians-a semi-iconic work- basically ensured that this would be a bogged down mediocre film that would do nothing but disappoint.
