  • IMAX 70mm film is highly significant, particularly when a major film like Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is scheduled to release in this format. Comparing the sizes of 70mm, 35mm, and IMAX film highlights the reasons why it is essential to watch any movie in IMAX 15/70 (IMAX 1570) film whenever possible, especially with the all star cast Oppenheimer possesses. In this video essay I provide a detailed examination of various film formats, including 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, VISTA VISION (35mm 8 perf) 70mm 5/70 (5 perf 70mm), and 15/70 (15 perf 70mm).
    Use this website to see if a real IMAX theater with a 15/70 projector is near you: lfexaminer.com/theaters/
    The Oppenheimer website may provide additional information on 70 IMAX screenings as well: www.oppenheimermovie.com/

    As a photographer the fact that Kodak seems to be involved in this project is very good sign. Them helping with the development means they could confidently ensure the availability of film on this grand scale going forward. This is great news for cinema but also film itself and photography.

      Great news for photography ? Technically, maybe, but for us, simple customers, kodak films getting more expensive every three months is slowly but surely pushing us towards digital (or cheaper brands, often meaning poor films quality). Photo film has become a luxury product.

    • @miracleyacht__1538

      @@sebastiengerber146 Well the most important thing is that Kodak will keep on making color film. If not color film will probably be lost forever. As for the price of film… there is a theory floating around that once Kodak Rochester manages to buy back the now bankrupt Kodak Alaris, the availability of film might go up and the prices could come down a bit since there would be less middleman taking their cut on film.

      @@sebastiengerber146 bruh film hasn't been competitive with digital on an ongoing cost basis for 20 years. cheapness is not why people shoot film today, and the expense of film is by far not the only reason digital is better. That said, I don't like paying more for film but if that's what is needed to keep it available then i'll do it

    • @sebastiengerber146
      @sebastiengerber146 Рік тому

      @@chrismofer I'm not talking about film being not competitive with digital. I know it's not and never will be again and I don't care. I'm talking about that fact that prices are getting so high that even for people who are still shooting in analog (like me), it's becoming litteraly impossible to pay. The previous price raises were done because of supply problems (due to the pandemic) and now because Eastman Kodak in massively investing in film production. So yes, maybe it's what is needed to keep film alive, but making it a luxury good is probably not the best idea. So again, I really don't see how this is great news for photo, because it's either shooting with cheap films, or selling a kidney to pay for portra (not even talking about processing costs with that).

    • @miracleyacht__1538
      @miracleyacht__1538 Рік тому +1

      @@sebastiengerber146 I think relatively to film prices before the digital revolution, film nowadays is just as expensive as it was in the 80s-90s. Although it sucks not having 3 Dollar Gold anymore, the current prices are needed to sustain the industry. Our only choice is to treat film... like a luxury object. Just as it was before digital made photography disposable.

    A desirable side effect (for me) of more movies being shot on film would be a return to film lighting. It is wonderful that digital can capture very dark, realistic, naturally lit scenes that could not be accomplished with film. There is a place for that, for sure. None of this is designed for indie projects. Bro, you would be lucky to find an average person that would shell out $1800 to record a feature film on 8mm or 16mm and then the digitisation process for 4k which would add about $4000. We all know $6000 would get you a fairly decent Sony or Canon dedicated cinema camera (which is beside the point really) there are other things that cannot be reproduced on digital.
      Film looks different because it's actually recorded using live inks (dyes) its colour space is completely different, and it cant be reproduced with LUTS. Not that you should be using LUTs anyway. You get it right you do it once. "we'll fix it in post" is one of the most hated phrases for VFX people and colourists.
      You come across as someone who has never been involved in doing any colour timing science. Or has ever operated a camera to realise your cinematographer is getting it right in camera now, or kinda ya know, they get fired....
      There are reasons to use film and there are reasons to use digital, none of them are "because you are Christopher Nolan, or Quentin Tarantino" by the way. One looks organic because it is organic and no amount of pro mist filters are gonna help you with that once you realise what live ink looks like. No amount of Pro Mist filters are gonna help you work out what the difference is either.

      What you're missing is that film was always expensive. Always. Even if you were just taking photos at a birthday. So what did that mean? You couldn't shoot 500 frames and choose the very best one. You had to be thoughtful and deliberate and compose your shots in your mind and work it out before you pulled the trigger. It also meant you had to be more creative and you sometimes had to use things that weren't "perfect." At times that was a problem but more often than not it created things you hadn't imagined and there was a portion of it all that wasn't totally in your control, and totally and infinitely manipulable. Even the early days of video had some of this as good quality tape wasn't free. You think the infinite nature of digital is freeing but I think you're wrong. I think it's become an albatross around the necks of filmmakers. You tell me, are films generally better today, or twenty years ago? Why do you suppose that might be?
      Edit: One last note. Film creates perceived value. The same way a vinly LP does. You only have so much money so whatever you bought, that's yours, and you care about it so an album you might not have loved at first, you learn to love. If you disagree with me you're not really disagreeing with me, you're disagreeing with Seal in his Amoeba interview. Go check it out.

      The switch to digital was a huge boon for a lot of studios, but I think producers and directors realized that film still can't be beat when money is no object. So more people are going back to it and the prices are kinda going up again. If there's a huge breakthrough in the dynamic range of large format digital sensors, maybe we'll see everything tilt back in that direction again. Though I wouldn't expect to see something like that anytime soon. I will say, though, digital makes really high-quality movie making _accessible_ and I'd rather see more movies being made, period.
      I do wish people recording in pure digital weren't so damn _lazy_ though. Editors cropping the shit out of scenes, then slapping oversaturated LUTs on the footage and calling it a day. Too many bad habits forming.

      @@michaelscott8901So I do know that the Regal Irvine Spectrum have a proper 1.43 screen and a 15/70 projector, but when Nolan visited for the opening of Tenet during the pandemic, it didn’t seem they were doing any 70 IMAX screenings which is a shame. That theater and Citywalk are the only theaters in SoCal that have 15/70 projectors with real 1.43 screens I believe. I’m hoping Irvine will pull theirs out this year for Oppenheimer. There is supposed to be waaaay more 70 IMAX screenings this time around, probably the most we’ve seen since Interstellar.

    Woahh. I didn't know they were working on making it much quieter. Loved the video & subscribed great work 👏🙌❤️
    Ps: a video on lenses used by imax 1570 cameras would be great as there's little to info on that. Also I don't understand how they even make those lenses the image circle has to be so huge considering the size of the sensor/film itself. Even if we could make a imax size sensor in future I still don't think lenses can be feasible especially fast enough lenses.
    Pps: imagine a imax 1570 film photography camera 😱 they should consider it. It would really be legendary.

    This is coinciding with the resurgence of film photography and Pentax's announcement of a new film camera: a point and shoot camera that looks like an SLR. Kodak has made film with an Estar base, which is simply polyester. It's tough enough to end up destroying movie cameras, so they don't use it.

    Fantastic video! I know Tyler Purcell from various internet groups and his channel. He is very knowledgeable, skilled and a great guy! I never ever accepted digital video. I may be biased, but it defeats the very idea of film. Film is about a finished looking image, that has a silky look to it and represents what movies are all about: daydreams, an idealized reality. The unfinished and raw looking digital video with its glassy, metallic look is the opposite. Throw all the LUT's at it you can find. It's not the same.

    • @TweetBomb
      @TweetBomb  Рік тому +1

      To me, it’s not really a debate between film VERSUS digital. Both carry unique characteristics that can serve the visual story of a film in different ways. But what I’ve never been able to accept, and never will, is the argument that you can just shoot on digital and “grade” it to look like film. You literally cannot replicate the dynamic range of film; the way highlights hold on film is still a wonder to me. I think both mediums should co-exist. I also think that vintage glass just doesn’t work well on digital, it doesn’t carry the same distinct characteristics you get when using them on film. Film is naturalistic, it carries that ‘suspense of disbelief’ that makes an image feel “cinematic.” So often today digital imagery looks like a faulty imitation, like you know you’re watching actors acting on set. Not to mention the even distinct differences between digital and film projection. Film projection literally is like watching a dream while you’re wide awake. I’m happy for all the changes happening in the film realm. I mean, there’s a reason most the greatest filmmakers in the world still use celluloid as their preferred medium haha

    8:20 the only way you do that is make a bigger mag, (the 3 min estimate is from a 1000’ mag running @ 24fps which is 4.2~ frames per foot) so if you wanted 5.5min, you’d need a 2000’ mag. That’d be roughly 30lbs in just film alone.
    idk if adding an addition 30 pounds to an already egregiously heavy camera package is going to revolutionize much especially when it would only add about a take or two in most situations before the roll would be short-ended anyway.
    Also, 70mm is the projection format. 65mm is the capture format.
