I think I'll just knock a bandsaw mill up. You amaze me with your skill set Kris and I could watch you all day. keep em coming mate
Great watching
Well held, how's yur back? Is their no end to this Man's talent? A 2mm drop across the length, that blade will be running downhill..perfect! Keep producing, you are an inspiration in these times.
What size box tube did you use and how many lengths
sick! all these cool projects going on with so much cool stuff yet to come (sauna, timber framed house, upstairs metal workshop with carlift, secondary stream diversion for higher flow hydro nozzles etc.)
can't wait for all those videos to get released eventually. thank you kris for this quality EDUCATIONAL entertainment! :)
I'm not here to learn to build anything, I'm just here to watching in amazement at what ONE man can achieve and do on his own if you really put your mind to it.
Morning Kris, You could just run a second fuel tank, One for diesel start and finish, prime for start. Then when it's warmed up switch over to Veg.
damn Bill you beat me to it ha ha.
@@livingladolcevita7318 and me lol.
That's the ideal scenario, but it needs modification to the engine (albeit a minor one).

I have been watching you all your life. I finally have to say. I like the way your brain works. We need more young people like you in this world.
You've basically saved lockdown here, such a quality setup. When lockdown's over I owe you about 10 beers!
Always a great day when you post Kris.
Congratulations on getting all the bits and bobs sourced and gathered for the saw mill. Knowing you Kris, the time it’ll save will be spent before it’s counted. You are a font of creativity. Your channel offers inspiration, ingenuity and practical applications for both.
Best to Dot!
Richard
Hello I admire your work so much and I’m thinking of doing the same kinda thing do you need planning permission for your work such as the house and workshop and green house thanks keep up the great work
Kris, Matt Cremona on his UA-cam channel built a trailer and built a homemade trailer "rotisserie" to turn the trailer. Worked out great and he kept it mounted through build, paint, wiring. Might take a look and consider it.
Hey Kris, I was wondering, What do you do with all the sawdust you inevitably make? I was just wondering because I saw a video on how to make your own firewood briquettes. Presses are really cheap / easy to make from what I've seen on YT and it's basicly free firewood from sawdust / cardboard. Is this something you do / are interested in doing?
Looking good.
Could you have 2 tanks one for Diesel one for Veg oil and an inline switch so you can just turn it over from diesel to veg oil and back again when you need to??
Have you considered making FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) of your vegetable oil? Its fairly easy and it would save you some of the hassle of using vegetable oil directly. And you can use it in the tractor as well, its a diesel, right?
please use gloves when you are using the angle grinder to clean the steel ready for welding........I have had 2 incidents in recent years where the grinders let go and ended up with painful injuries......it's not worth it mate
what is you had a seperate fuel tank one for diesel to start the engine one for the vegatable oil to run it on
I live in B.C. Canada and it’s 8:20 am here. I will be saving this vid for when I’m done work and settled in with a nice pint of Guinness. Kris, thank-you for all your quality videos.
Kris, you could heat up your few litres of veg oil in the house and take it down to the bandsaw in an insulated container, so it would still be plenty warm to easily start the engine without the need for diesel?
My thoughts exactly, start on diesel and add warm veg oil when the season requires it. I've been searching for this comment! Good work Kris. Always impressed and slightly jealous!
Really looking forward to seeing how you tackle the saw head part of it. Blows me away to see you thinking and making. Proper engineering.
The one thing I do not like is the log clamps. I have run band-saw mills with them and they end up being a pain. I have seen a log clamp system on a higher end band saw that is pretty much like a vice. The heads are inter changeable so that you can spike the round log for the first couple of passes and then swap them out for some jaws for the cant. Pretty much there are like 6 or 8 of those clamps on the trailer and you just roll the long on and clamp it shut. This centers the log and keeps it true to the bed. The other thing that the log clamps do is kill a blade if you are not watching them. Because you clamp them high and think you will clear them well you don't. The band head has a set of guides that prevent you from cutting too close to the log dogs. On the one I saw he had a tall dog and short dogs. The short ones were like 3 inches and the tall ones were like 6 inches. The saw had pins I think that prevented the saw from going down to far. He always started it with the pins at the high setting and then made all his cuts then when he hit it he would change them out for the short ones. There are a few videos out there showing the hydraulics log dogs that are pretty much the same thing.
Though I have run band saw mills and they are nice, I may in the future build a swing blade mill or buy one ( a 4.25 inch swing blade mill from Lucas runs like 5k ). I started a project many years ago and then sold said project to someone else.
Really looking forward to the weather getting better! Can‘t wait for seeing everything blooming again :)
Rather than running straight veg oil, you could convert it to bio-diesel. Then you can treat it as normal diesel, without needing to mix road derv in. Also you can process used cooking oil, which is cheaper/free..
Also it is then road-legal, up to 2000ltrs per year. You can make a bio-diesel rig with oil barrels and a bit of copper plumbing.
Also, don't forget the drain holes in the chassis.
Probably too late, as you already have the engine.... But an electric motor + diesel generator set could have been a more flexible option. You can site the engine away from the work site and give your ears/nose a break. It lightens the bandsaw assembly. You have the option of running from mains if it were available in future. And you have a generator to share with for other projects, rather than having to get yet another engine for them.
How about adding another tank so you have one for diesel and the other for veg oil and a switch over tap much like old tvo tractors
Love your channel Kris (my absolute favourite) but what I love the most is how you completely melt and loose it when you see your cat 🤣💕Tells me you’re a good man. Keep up the great work.
I would just have the smaller fuel tank on the engine full of commercial diesel and have a secondary biodiesel tank attached to the sawmill frame with a Y splitter valve. start it on the engines tank and after it's warmed up switch it to the bio mix tank.
Yea that doesnt look heavy at all as he flips it over ... You insane man
I'll hopefully copy your mill this summer,,, save some $$$...on an island off the coast of Maine!
Watching these videos is a bit like watching Bob Ross painting videos. It starts off with you having no idea how it's going to turn out, as it progresses you think 'ok looks cool, I can see where this is going' with the occasional 'wtf is going on?' moment thrown in and by the end you see an amazing work of art while also marvelling that you would never know where to even begin ;D Or maybe that's just me :P
Great video dude :)
Use wooden post it's easier on blade.
Put turn bolt at end of pipe for clearance
Where did you get that engine and what was the price? Great video
Hi Kris, Take a look at "Fall Line Ridge" on You Tube. He bought a new woodmizer LT15 with krank handle for loading timber a year or so ago & which he later converted to use an impact gun to save time.. nice mod you may like. Take a look. br - Love the channel. PS don't forget to make some metal shims to level up the log ends to horizontal for milling.
My boss breathed in fumes from welding galvanized, was praying for death a couple days later. Then he died 2 years later with 9 lbs of tumors within his torso. Ya gotta be careful with that stuff!
😲
Wow !!!!
Possibly fit a second fuel tank and changeover tap. Then one tank for diesel and one for veg oil. I remember the old tractors that started on petrol then were switched over to paraffin.😀🇬🇧
Great job, Kris - You're such an inspiration... Thank you again for sharing....
The jack stand handles will be on the way of loading and unloading the logs
Yeah i know. They are on with a retaining pin.(not welded on or anything) I plan to have them removable on the loading side.
Your knowledge and drive amaze me...so impressive and honest. You are willing to share your insights and you are not afraid to show the reality of your work. Thank you for your kind, clean and genuine language...it is refreshing to hear a gentleman speak in their work environment.
What would've help to prevent warpage is to have a welding table or lots of work horses that have been leveled. Than use plenty of clamps and brace the workpiece before welding that is what prevents warpage. And even than afterwards they would sent it to a plant to straighten the workpiece with massive heat and weight in a press. Also in the trade they would use hard wire instead of Flux core wire which is much less heat therefore not as much warpage. Just sharing my knowledge but with a bandsaw the tolerances should be acceptable as long as your angle iron is straight you should be fine!
BTW Kris, I would install an extra cross brace at the very end where your hitch is attached. And I would recommend you place a brace beneath the tongue of the hitch and extend it back perpendicular to those existing braces and as I said add one more brace and extend that brace back crossing those two cross braces to reinforce the tongue hitch. I hope you can get that. Since your just using it on your farm as you said, it might be ok as it is. If not you can always reinforce it later on. Other than that you've done a decent job bro.. cheers bud.
Sure looks like SMAW rather than FCAW to me...
spot on quality filming as usual - quite a build -look fwd to seeing it working
I have been planning this build for a while. When I'm done with my tiny house, cottage I'm going to start. Thanks for awesome videos!
Nice projekt but run your new engine on pure diesel .the vego oil is just crap just clogging the fuel system.
Keep up you good work
Like you videos wery much
Regards Anders
Love the video, I'm always excited to see a new post from you, Kris. This ones extra special though, I've been researching band saw mills obsessively and plan to get one in the spring. A welder is something I want for the future, but I think I'll use the mill to build a shop for it first! Thanks for the inspiration.
Loves watching these videoa and ypur journey. Can I ask, were you an engineer in a past life?
I'm blown away by your ability to litterally turn your hand to anything it would appear.
I forget what he said he used to do but it wasn’t an engineer. He is creative though
You are definitely a go big or go home kind of guy!
Big project. That chop saw paid for itself on this job alone. Well done!
P.S> Sweet engine!
Very cool project. Have you seen any of Matt Cremona's videos on building his log trailer or his bandsaw mill? Not sure if anything in there would be helpful or not, as you are likely further along in the build than what is video'd. Good useful information (and fun) video as always :)
I remember about 20 years ago I ran my Citroën Xantia on veg oil. I used about 80/20 to 50/50 mix veg oil to Diesel depending on the season.. At that time new veg oil from the supermarket was about 2/3 the cost of Diesel. Everywhere I went smelled of fish and chips though!
You rock Kris many can learn from you survive is the answer dont trust governments to look after you South Africa is going down the drain started to go like in Zimbabwe power cuts the whole day nothing is secure here we have to build own power and plant our own veggies. There is a saying i learn in Special Forces the man who walks alone walks far. Good luck with your projects.
Happy New Year Kris and hello from Australia, we really look forward to your videos 😁👍🏼
Brilliant video as always Kris, your work ethic puts a lot of us to shame. Looking forward to your next one ✌❤ Rob.
Thank you for continuing to be a bright spot, in dreary times.
Even though these projects look overwhelming, your editing makes all of them look doable. ;)
Buenos días!! Excelente trabajo!! Consulta que diámetro es del tubular que ocupaste para la fabricación del chasis?
Does your excavator run?
Using 7018? Try striking it like a match against the material instead of tapping it to start it. Used to have to weld rusty crap LCS plate with 7018, works great, but doesn't start as easily as 6010 (although it takes considerably more concentration to get a clean weld out of 6010). Could always try 7024 jet rod as well, melts like butter in my opinion, absolute nightmare for overhead welds though, also noticed a generator running in the background, 7024 needs a ton of amps to work properly. Last note: 7018 flux coat absorbs moisture, the wetter the environment the harder it will be to get clean welds. Thanks for the vids, excited to watch more.
Definitely be following this along! Just bought a woodmizer lt15wide will do a 36" log and love it..one of the best features is it has small rollers at the top of the log stops that are the best idea on the whole mill you should look at there design and copy it I'm sure it will be nice of you do big logs and have to roll them
I think grinding edges that are going to be welded to a roughly 45 degree angle gives more surface area for the weld to adhere/hold the two pieces.
1 year ago..I hadn't found you. Just checking up...I used to sell saws like yours and I'm guessing your blade has carbide teeth? They cut very well and hardly any sparks.
Look like à good heavy duty trailer WOULD have been nice with à set of spring suspension for thé road, but perhaps You are not planning for a roadtrip good job on the project You may look at my own diy sawmill on youtube Sgtrod
You amaze me with all your talents, full of inspiration and authenticity, well done on your trailer build x
Great work but PLEASE watch your back, friend!
Cheers from Sweden!
I don't know how useful it would be, but you could add a second fuel tank with an inline switch between the two.
Keep one tank mostly diesel for startup and shut down, switch to the (larger?) mix tank for operation.
Likely better to just stick to being mindful of fueling per intended use so you don't have to warm a full tank of veg oil that's been left in the overnight cold.
Nice! I am sick of the chainsaw as well.. I have an old RV that I want to use the frame as the base for a mill. Love your videos! Cheers
Several folks living a rural life own a tractor, and or a small excavator, etc. Throw in a gas-diesel generator, a van, etc, and one can live independently in the country. Not sure I’d call that “off grid” though.
Great vids, informative, interesting and straight to the point. Not to much waffle like to many other youtubers. Well done! Well worth subscribing! On the diesel veg oil mix. Fit an extra tank with a 2 way valve to switch from pure diesel to veg oil when warm?
What size square tube are you using? I know you said 6.5 meters long, but didnt catch the square. Thanks
Please reinforce with at least a plate or something underneath your axles. The downward force from bouncing and everything will still break those welds.
Additional thought...use a Power take off to run a small generator and have a welding and milling rig?
Something that might help later on. You may have already planned for it. It is something I need for my mill. Reinforce the tongue end for a pulling point. You can winch a log onto the mill from the other end.
Im planning on having side ramps and a winch mounted to a post that slots in to the side of the frame.
@@KrisHarbour Great
Why is it ALWAYS raining where you live (same as where I live :-))
Love what you do. You have a lot of talent. I had a thought about the fuel for the engine. You may have come up with the same idea in the next episodes. How about 2 tanks? 1 with only pure diesel and one with bio. Then you can put a tap in to switch between them. Start it on pure, switch to bio then back to pure at the end of the day to flush the boi out before storing :)
Im very disappointed in you for not useing oil treated wood. I love oil and dont feel you should descriminate against oil. Many people make there living in the oil industry. Correct me if im wrong but doesnt oil come from the earth.Oil was here long before us.
Kris please use a bottle of each avocado, sunflower, and grade seed oils, and see which one is better. These three are the only ones anyone should cook with at high temperatures, because all others are compromised at those temperatures. I think any of either of these three will perform much better for you in any of you vegetable oil ran engines, and I’d like to know whether that is the case or not.
Awesome, I was considering building one myself for years. Maybe you have triggered me now ;) Greeetings from Germany,
Me to! I finally just got so sick of chainsaw milling and going to the sawmill buying wood. Should save many van journeys and time.
Whats going on with your Hair ?
It's growing!!!!
Again a great vid. Any chance you could posy some info about the mix of veg oil before you mix it with Diesel ?
What HP is the engine? And source? Thanks as always for your videos.
Hi Kris we are thinking of buying a woods i believe you can only stop there 28 days a year and cant live there permanently how did you get around that i would appropriate your advice is it different in Wales Thanks
Hey so glad you did your own timberframe barn. I saw your request to talk but don't know what email address you wanted to talk on.
The generator supplying the welder and metal saw? Gasoline or diesel? Does it do double duty on backing up the house power?
kris surely youd need a great field of sunfowers for the ammount of oil you would need for vehicles and machinery, great idea though.
Been loving these videos.... just one question how do you fund all these projects?
Love bandsaw mill builds. Have watched several on UA-cam. Looking forward to the rest of the series and the first time you mill lumber with it.
Could you link where you bought the motor or give specs like how many HP?
Very cool Kris. One little thing. When making something this heavy, it is usually a good idea to tie the tongue into at least 2 different cross members. It spreads the weight and stress this trailer will get while pulling. Other than that, I quite liked watching you build it. Well done.
Should be OK for local around the property travel?
@@samvalentine3206 For a while sure. But the uneven terrain of his land will be harder on it than your average paved road. Remember, the entire weight of that trailer is being pulled by two pieces of metal butt welded together. It will start getting stress fractures, when, I have no idea. Could be a month, could be 20 years, it all just depends.
Would be interested to see a video covering your process for scrap scrounging, your yield is impressive compared to what I can get around here
Most the box steel used was new unfortunately. cant really scavenge much at the moment.
You need make the hitch detachable as a theft deterrent the hitch just makes it easier for someone to drive off with your Lumber mill
Excellent
Could do with more info like size of box section you’re using, or a copy of your plans!
add a secondary diesel tank for start and warm up then switch to veg for run, nice job
Recently a new sub here. Very nice channel. Hope to see some sawmill updates very soon.
Have you thought about safer and better mini bridges by the log house? bridges are awesome .
Where did you get the parts for the mill ? Bandsaw wheels ect ? I can’t seem to find any at all online
Is mine out of shot! Link for wheels and stub axles please. Log splitter next pls
Diesel engine brand make model and where to source, would have been nice..
1 point 21 gigawatts!!
This might also be of use for petrol engines in future builds: ua-cam.com/video/Bvl5XxVVjDM/v-deo.html
Did anybody else close one eye as he sighted the camera down the first rail finished tack welding it?
Hi Kris, you never ciese to amaze, is there anything you can't do?
on your new saw could you not swap the height stop bolt for an allen key head as they're round?
Its always really hard to get things square and level but you did a really good job!
Did you reseal your engine with Viton seals? The vege oil will kill the seals otherwise
Your vids can make any day better. Thanks!
