Real transfer speed of that enclosure is 400mb/s. I have it populated with 4 sata SSD. Sata SSD max speed are 550mb/s. The bottleneck is either the USB3 interface or the controller chip inside the enclosure.
This is cheap and way better than most enclosures, others usually do 250mb/s and they are not cheaper. They advertise 5gbps or 10 gbps (usb 3,1 gen 1 or gen 2) but these are not real world transfer speed !
Something else to consider is the enclosure turn off when you turn off the computer but don't turn on when you turn on the computer. You have to push the button everytime. I am using the enclosure to depopulate the sata drived from my main PC to play games from the enclosure. So far i had no issues, even on big games with heavy data transfer like alan wake 2. Loading times are a bit slower compared to an NVME but not really slower compared to the drived runing at 550mb/s.
This enclosure is a game changer for people who want an ITX build and don't need a RAID storage solution.
If you buy this enclosure and want it to be quiet, i suggest open it and replace the fan or add a resistance to the fan. The fan spin up as soon as something is transefer in or out the enclosure, there is no temperature probe.

Just to drop some knowledge, when you delete stuff from your hard drive, it's not gone until it's overwritten. That is why you are getting near instant speed when you're transferring back and forth after deleting.

I just bought this item. I was looking for an alternative to free some of my SATA power connectors from my Power Supply, because I have several HHDs connected to them directly. This will do just fine. Thanks for the video!!!

Awesome vid! I'm just curious about the transfer speeds if you would copy/move files between the drives. I reckon they'd be slower since they'll be sharing a single USB cable that connects to the PC.

You're right, the OS probably had the file still cached in RAM and reused it.
USB 3.0 spec is 5Gbps so 640MB/s but that's the spec only, most drives max out at 100 or 150 as you said. Then there's 3.2 which goes up to 10Gbps but again technology isn't able to use all of the bandwidth right now. SATA3 is 6Gbps anyway so it wouldn't make much of a difference. This also depends on the RAID setup since some levels make copying files quicker or slower...

Is the USB C version faster or just a different connector? If it is no different from the USB 3.0 B I would rather have the 3.0 B since it would not be as fragile. It cracks me up when I see a large device with a USB mini B or Micro B connector. My first thought is that they just don't want it to last! It is different with mobile devices that were intended to have it but really, if you have the space for a larger and more durable connector, use it!! I mean really, how many cents are they saving for every hundred devices made???? I absolutely hate that when cheap parts get used when a better one is only a bit more expensive. Some people are willing to pay that extra nickel you cheapskates!!

A USB 8 TB WD drive comes with a 12v @ 1.5Amps power supply. This box comes with a 12V @ 6.5 Amps power supply which it's unlikely to be enough for 5 drives. Which means in the long run the power supply will crap out and the drive will silently lose data, especially when used with bigger power hungry drives (as attested by the many 1 star reviews on amazon).
For comparison the power supply Orico ships with the 2 bay version is 12v@4 Amps. 🙄

@@bufordmaddogtannen The WD 8TB use 12v @ 0.9 Amps. The box comes with a 12V @ 6.5 Amps, so if you divide the 6.5 Amps on to 0.9Amps you will have 7 Hard Drive with 8TB, so it's safe to use the 5 bay with 8TB.

@@khalifaalammari58yt the problem is that the startup current is about 1.5A -1.75A@ 12V depending on the drive.
If the circuitry in the enclosure doesn't do a good job at performing staggered startup (one drive at a time) the psu would be operating above specs and will fail over time.
For comparison Western Digital uses a 12V @ 4A PSU in their WD Book Duo enclosures.

The DS500U3 is a complete piece of garbage. It could not detect partitions correctly on HDD's over 1TB. I placed a newly formatted Seagate 4TB drive with one full partition (formatted in a single bay Sabrent enclosure) into the first bay and upon power up, Windows 11 told me that the drive needed formatting. When I pulled it up in a partition manager, it showed a 457GB unformatted partition and 3TB of unallocated space. Shut down the Orico, removed the 4TB drive, and placed it back in the Sabrent enclosure, and the drive worked perfectly.

@@whodahell13 Since I posted my comment, I discovered that most enclosures, particularly USB, have compatibility issues with hard drives larger than 2TB, even if you move the drive to an enclosure made by the same company. So, if the enclosure dies and is no longer available, the drive will be unreadable.
