I am a 59 yo female who is a retired firefighter and I have used creative for at least 10 years. I got heavy into resistance training in my mid forties and have been weight training ever since! I enjoy the gym and creatine has really improved my ability to lift heavier and retain lean physique.
Stick to your lane, no need to be equal or lift heavy like a MAN 🥴🤣🤣
9k]
100% I'm 42 yo, I work 12-14 hr days with nothing to eat, no break and I work circles around the 20 yo kids, Vreatine and lifting weights is the way to go. I used to run a lot and had so many nagging injuries, I traded my runners in for gloves, now I have no injures and more energy than I can shake a stick at, I wish I knew then, what I know now.
Yo does it help fatigue 😩?
How long did you take it and how long should I take a break??
Don't limit yourself to creatine! I am 78 years old. Yesterday, after six months in a gym, I increased my bench press to 210 pounds and haven't plateaued yet. All other resistance exercises have come up accordingly. After considerable research, I take creatine, beta alanine, L-arginine, MSM, and whey protein isolate. Creatine increases ATP in muscle cells, which results in greater endurance for those extra reps in each set. Moreover, creatine seems to shorten my recovery time. At my age, I find 96 hours between muscle groups to be optimal. I work out every other day, alternating between chest/legs and arms/core.
I can attest to the fact that weightlifting for seniors does not just reduce muscle loss. It can actually reverse it. I expect to hit a limit at some point, but I certainly am not there yet.
Yes, beta alanine for the lactic acid, delay. Better endurance and strength, with both creatine and beta alanine.
Muscle, is the real fountain of youth.
Nice work
One of the biggest kicks/motivations I get from being older (67) is being in MUCH better shape than 95% of men my age
Yeah Ok😂
1. If you are taking creatine and have labs to check kidney function ask your doctor to test for Cystatin C instead.
2. I work out regularly and it definitely improved my performance in terms of how much I can lift and how quickly I recover between sets.
3. I was bald before I started taking creatine. I am still bald. But not any more bald than before.
4. I was 225 lbs when I started using creatine. I saw about 6-8 lbs of weight gain in 4-6 weeks. 2-3 of those lbs have since gone away.
5. I am leaner than before despite being a little heavier. So - no fat gain. But that may be more diet and exercise based.
CONCLUSION: Creatine is worth taking.
Which brand did you take?
Creatine works very well with me but gives me back acne, that's why I don't take it.
Can you further explain the Cystatin C test versus creatinine ? Creatine definitely messed with my kidney labs.
It's bad for you future I did not good causes heart problems but toodles
@@daniellizarraga3897 Did you ever find a good brand of Creatine?
You guys missed the neuological benefits. As someone who suffers from Parkinson's I have found that Creatine has improved my mental functions (verified by suspending supplementation for a couple of months) as well as helped by general energy levels and other Parkinson's symptoms. There are not many studies and those studies tend to be somewhat conflicting but it works for me.
Now I will try placebo forte! 🙂
I agree as a combat veteran before I was diagnose with PTSD I did have trouble with short term memory and it was bad but since taking creatine which I use in conjunction with daily exercise the STM is not as bad like the reason why I walk into a room for or remembering new people names
Hi Guys from New Zealand. I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m in the older category and looking to ensure that I stay there for a long time! I’m passing your videos onto my friends because they are sensible, practical, money saving and humorous! Keep them coming.

I have seen loads of your videos. Love the presentation style. Great double act! :)
62 yr old distance runner training at a high level in the Florida heat and humidity. I was having trouble with muscle strains, tightness, and other unusual problems for months. After 2 doses of 5 grams of creatine monohydrate, I was not longer straining muscles and my muscles responded positively to stretching again. Although my diet had plenty of meat, I was not taking supplemental creatine previously. Apparently, creatine synthesis + dietary intake was not keeping up with daily creatine depletion from physical activity. I've concluded that the low creatine level was increasing my muscle relaxation times (see study reports) to the point of creating muscle resistance during dynamic eccentric motion during running, resulting in muscle strains.
Love that you two beautiful men are Canadian! You made my day! Thank you for all the excellent info you provide to us. Have a great day from a fellow Canadian!

you doctors are great! Thanks for doing these talks.
You docs have been releasing a lot of videos lately. Thanks for this one as well all your time and work. I didn't know about creatine. I'll be 80 next year (35 on the inside) so maybe I should have a think about creatine for guarding against muscle loss. My 50 plus years of vegetarianism/now veganism and constant curiosity about nutrition and health (did someone say microbiome?) has worked out well for me - zero arthritis nor any other auto-immune problems, also I'm very active. Supplements: I take a multi-vitamin which includes many trace elements and B12 (I'm a vegan). I also have been taking vitamin D for about 15 years. Used to take Algae/Omega 3 capsules but recently switched to Chia seeds + Flax meal, mainly because of cost - will have to see how that works out. I mostly manage my diet carefully in order not to depend on too many supplements.
Nice work. Creatine is worth a look if you do the exercise too

Love this video! I am a big fan of creatine. I have been taking it for 3yrs. I am a very healthy menopausal 53yo women who weight trained 3 or 4 times a week. For me, creatine helps with recovery immensely! I also have experienced muscle growth but I attribute this to my clean and high protein diet, however if I could not recover well, I couldn’t see good results, so creatine is an important recovery supplement for me. I take the 3C’s every morning: coffee, creatine and collagen (to support my abundant Latina hair😂) Thank you so much for making this video!
You’ve matched those three names perfectly! I am about to start taking the last two but not coffee! What type of Collagen have you tried?
Very welcome !

I'm 65 and have worked out all of my adult life, but due to severe injuries, I cut back to a maintenance workout of 6 sets of 50 decline pushups staggered with barbells every other day, and I find creatine helps me retain muscle mass.
Yup, my doctor recommends creatine to all his patients over 55, he says that Creatine is the no-brainer of the century
Thank you so Much Respected Staff, Very Nice Detailed Video...

I want to thank you guys for your very informative video on creatine; one of many informative videos I've watched recently after my bilateral knee replacement. As a vegan I decided that it probably was a good idea for me to try the compound, and I was wondering, does Dr Weening still use it as he is a purported vegetarian also? Thanks again
Thanks Docs. I’m 75 years old and have taken creative daily for almost a year. Does it work? Well…yeah! I’m off to the Canadian Masters National Weightlifting Championship next month. My snatch is up over 20 pounds in that year and my clean and jerk is up over 25 pounds. Some of it is better training but some of it is the creatine. I’m getting stronger and building muscle mass as I get older. Gotta like that.
That is impressive for in your 70s. If I'm alive when 75 that's 34yrs from now I'll still be bodybuilding. Have a good day

Thanks for the myth busting especially. Also love when you point out if there are situations or groups where there are no studies.
Absolutely!
For lots of years I eschewed any supplements, although my doc at the time “suggested” different ones. Then I moved, and my next doc was very insistent on supplements. I liked him, I trusted him, and so I started following his supplement advice. He has retired, and my new doc has no problem with the supplements I’m taking. But FWIW, none of the three have suggested Creatine. In addition to my actual meds, I take D3, B12, Iron, potassium, and fish oil, plus acetaminophen for arthritis pain. At 79 1/2, I’m in relatively good health, but whether all these supplements have had any impact, I have no idea.
In any event, I really enjoy your videos. I have recommended them to many acquaintances. With all the crappola that is on the Internet these days, it’s great to see some voices of reason-along with a little comedy, of course!

Another great vid guys. I take creatine and I think it helps me playing hockey 3 x a week in my 60s. Could it help in muscle recovery?
At 70 with a full head of hair I can tell you that since I tried it when it came out in the 90's, every time I have used it again through all these years, my hair falls out.
I can't think of a longer study than this.
That's odd
Great video guys. thank you it was very informative. Any brand you recommend?
this is educational at the same time entertaining, thank you!
Got a ton of questions so I’ll keep it to a select few. 1) Are there any cardio concerns? I have high cholesterol and triglycerides. 2) I’m also prediabetic, any blood sugar effects? I’m doing low carb for the most part. 3) I did a cycle of creatine about 25 years ago when it first came on the scene and had good results, but it definitely gave me lower leg cramps when jogging. This is a known possible side effect. Are there any other identified negative side effects? I’m seriously thinking of doing a cycle. I’m a 60 year old who’s been lifting for about 40 years and trying to regain my health and training edge with smarter dietary and supplement choices in my golden years. I’ve never done anabolic steroids and never will. Thanks!!
It causes AFIB
Interesting to hear. Could you point to the study it says it causes afib?
You don't "cycle" creatine. It's a supplement that works best in a steady-as-you-go diet. It can cause stomach/gastro in high amounts, but that's not common with the typical 5g per day. It won't hurt cardio, and unless you take it with the sugar-loaded energy drinks, you should not have a problem with diabetes. But most creatine is delivered in sweet drinks, and even artificial sugars will tend to make you crave sweet foods. So be careful if you have an issue controlling snacks.
You said you are prediabetic and trying to regain your health. That sounds like your body fat is excessively high. I don't think creatine is what you need (at first). You need caloric deficit and a focus on macronutrients. Awesome you are dropping carbs but too much, too fast, will likely cause failure. I suggest cutting one "bad" food item every week to ten days and working to eliminate it over that time, or longer. Write it down. Make it a bit more gradual. I've never seen anyone go cold turkey (from carbs) over a lasting time. But gradual behavioral changes over 90 days really seem to increase the chances of success.
Good luck. I hope you reach - and keep - your goals.
@@FamilyManMoving Thanks for the feedback!
Creatine is one of the most studied supplements and probably the most effective. Its totally worth taking with very little down side. Its cheap too :)

Has it helped you?
I am 73 and very active, resistance bands, mountain biking, rowing machine and elliptical. Do you know of any reasons you should not take it other than pregnancy. It is a pleasure to watch your videos.
Great and informative video. I've been on the fence about taking creatine because the myths surrounding it had me scared mostly of damaging my kidneys over time. I've been working out consistently with the goal of building strength and muscle mass. I think I have reached the gain cap point as far as what I'm going to be able to achieve without creatine. I'm toning and building strength however I'm not bulking up. My muscles look good after the workout pump however the effect only lasts for a few minutes. At 45, I'm probably not going to get the size and strength I'm looking for without creatine so I'm going to start taking it.
You dont need creatine, you need Test
What about the ones with lead in them
Iv heard it is bad to drink caffeine drinks while taking creatine. Not at the same time but at different times of the day. What are your thoughts? As always another great video.
There is some evidence for possible dehydration due to the caffeine and stomach upset.
Of all the supplements i have tried, creatine definitely worked. My weights went down by like 20 % or more when i stopped using it.
Great information Docs!
I've read that creatine supplementation may increase levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a hormone that's been associated with the development and progression of prostate cancer. Do you have any additional insights to provide on that topic? Studies that prove/disprove that relationship?
Everyone will get prostate cancer if you live long enough
So I took creatine for a while as part of my weightlifting routine at 58. It works, but… It isn’t cheap to buy. That’s the first thing. Secondly, it only works when you’re taking it. If you stop taking it your artificially inflated muscles, that become full of water, shrink right back down to the way they really are. It makes you fart a lot also, which is challenging at work. so if you’re looking for a more pumped up look for a short term thing, it works. But you can’t take it forever, it’s too expensive and it just becomes one more thing that you have to do every day.
Best advice of all the comments.
Been taking this for almost 20 years. I'm 61. Full head of hair and my twice yearly blood labs show NO negative kidney effects.
I took creatine for 8 weeks and I’ve had some benefits: a bit stronger in gym and leaner but on the other side although that I was a bit stronger about 5kg - 10kg more, my hairs was thinner than before. I’m not saying that I started losing hair but they went really thin. After I stoped take creatine in about 4-6 weeks my hair went to same thickness than before. For me personal is a no go….
Thank you for sharing

It is said that oats/oatmeal is really healthy. For the bowels/intestines etc.
It doesn't work for me.
I get totally lethargic after eating it. Sleepy head.

Pasta is also fine.
Weird. But I have to adjust knowing this. Only a fool ( I am one regularly)would keep on eating oatmeal 'because it's so healthy' and feels like a dishcloth for hours after doing so.
I started taking creatine about 2 months ago. I gained about 5-6 lbs and my legs became very bloated. I normally have thin muscular legs, but after taking creatine they looked like tree stumps. This scared the crap out of me. I've stopped taking creatine and everything is back to normal.
thats because creatine gives you water weight the first two weeks. after that time your body will shed the water weight. but you were 100% fine
Creatine makes you retain water, right🤔
@@anthonyshaw8698 retain into muscles ...and it's good !!! You will have full muscles and strong muscles! I'm taking creatine for about 20 years!
Was it monohydrate or HCL?
Surprised you guys didn't touch on the potential brain health and functional benefits with creatine supplementation. Great summary. Thanks Docs.
I have started taking it again after a decade. I feel less toxic overall in the morning after a hard workout. I drink alcohol less and I eat more healthy foods because it does create mental clarity and a more calculated thought process. My skin looks better. I don't notice any additional drive in the gym per se, but better recovery. I definitely notice greater bulk as well on recovery days though. I respectfully disagree about dehydration. I need to drink about 30% more water when taking creatine. It is mainly good for bulk and healing to narrow it down. The bulk doesn't last, but the strength does. Kind of like steroids, which I did take recovering from an accident where I lost use of my left arm for 4 months. Creatine has done more for me than steroids in retrospect. It is legit for the long term if we are talking side effects compared to steroids. There will be virtually no side effects if you train hard and don't expect a cheat or quick fix. It is just a catalyst, and a great one.
I was taking Creatine Monohydrate and it gave me a lot of facial bloating. Tried lowering the dose. More water. Same. Went to HCI and no issues now
Sorry to hear that but glad it worked out
@@TalkingWithDocs my doctor was a bit amazed since usually facial bloating isn’t a thing. But if you Google it, many get that. I wish I knew how well HCI compared to Monohydrate? I don’t have the Thor body yet. Too many chicken wings !
I've been researching and using creatine off and on for a couple years now(weightlifting purposes). I follow a bodybuilding page on Facebook and posted a comment, Creatine- Yah or Nah?" Probably about 90% of the responces(and there was over a hundred) was Yah. But about 5 to 10% was Nah, with some saying their kidneys couldn't handle it. Soo, you can't just listen to the research studies on creatine, you have to listen to other common people's experiences and your own. For the most part I think creatine is safe, but I do have a little bit of doubt about it sometimes. Especially after I've been taking it for more than a few weeks everyday because I sometimes wonder if I'm experiencing some stiffness in my lower back area. What I do knowbis that I enjoy lifting weights 2 to 3 three times a week and will continue to do so with or without creatine supplements. Perhaps I would feel more confident and get equal or more gains eating lean red meat 2 to 3 times a week? I still do find creatine supplements a interesting topic and will continue to learn more about it, but like almost all supplements, it's not critical to use it.
Eat fatty red meats. The food pyramid is an absolute lie. Carbs and sugars cause the cardiovascular problems that are blamed on red meat. Always ask who paid for the study, because, 95% of studies are paid for by some interest and the studies almost never vary from the wants of those interests.
Edit: when I say carbs and sugars I'm speaking of the refined kind. Fruits and vegetables are just fine.
I wonder how they concluded that their "kidneys couldn't handle it". Subjective experiences are not the most reliable ones.
@@Nelis1324 Perhaps, but then maybe not all clinical/scientific studies are reliable either. I heard once or twice before that CreaPure had sponsored some of the studies on creatine. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not. It does give a bigger picture to think about.
how about hair loss? How many of them said they were going bald?
@@Skeware Not very many. Maybe just a couple out of a hundred.
I’ve been lifting for 25 years and taking creatine for over 10 now. I notice if I stop taking it. Get more reps, better recovery, look a tiny bit bigger. No side effects for me. You will tend to gain a little on the front end from water retention, which eventually goes down (as the docs mention). Most people who take creatine are lifters, so mass gain is the goal. It can help put a little more energy into those last sets, and that extra effort will eventually increase hypertrophy (muscle growth). It gives you a little more gas in the tank during a workout - allowing muscles to contract as if they were a bit less tired. It's a small percentage difference, but over time those add up. If you are not used to running the tank to empty - working out to fatigue, if not exhaustion - then I don't think it'll help all that much. Creating and exercise - especially resistance training - go hand in hand. It's not a multivitamin.
Thank you for the great work you do educating the public. Can you please talk about weight gain powder. I am a 60 year old trying to gain weight but am concerned about their usefulness and side effects. Thank you so much.
We will add it to the list for sure
You guys are the best !
Thanks Coco!
