Hey brother, I think the answer to why it has to be sterile when growing inside is because we are trying to make this happen on purpose. What I mean by that is in nature billions of spores will spread around and out of those billions of spores you'll be lucky if you find just a few patches of mushrooms. When we're doing it at home we're wanting to take just a few hundred spores and make sure it happens every single time, so keeping everything clean is one of the best ways to help make sure that happens. I hope that makes sense and thank you for your video.

The answer I've always been given is that the mushrooms you find growing outside have really aggressive genetics, whereas a lot of the stuff we grow indoors has been pampered for so long the genetics are just not as strong. The mushrooms growing outside have just fought against all odds to survive contamination and fruit successfully.
Absolutely wrong (it's okay to be wrong we all have to learn). Genetics has nothing to do with it. When you simulate an environment indoors its much more favorable for contaminants so to minimize risk of contamination we follow a basic set of rules in cultivation, clean spawn, everything else can be landfill dirty and it don't matter. The only thing that matters is clean spawn. I went on a bit of tangent but like I say, it's environmental and has nothing to do with genetics afaik
That doesn't mean they're more potent (have favorable genetics). Even if you isolated and cloned the best shrooms from a flush, it doesn't guarantee your next flush will be potent. You have to think of spores as sperm. A human male can be healthy, attractive, and with a favorable iq, and his female spouse have the same characteristics, and they could still give birth to a child that's lacking in all of those categories. Genetics/potency of the flush can not be determined beforehand, especially using environmental factors as the basis of your claim. Another comparison is outdoor weed vs indoor weed. I've had indoor that was far more potent than outdoor. And ive had outdoor weed (literally the color and smell of hay) that made indoor weed (frosty and covered in trichomes) seem like child's play.
Genetic in the wild are very sparc and have unstable genetics. When they are grown and sporulated over and over the genetics isolate causing certain favorable traits to remain dominant
I'm through my first few grows ( 2 tubs of golden teacher), and getting ready to put some spawn bags of yeti and jack frost into monotubs. I found your channel a few days back and watched every video. Your enthusiasm and style of explaining things is so good. Can't wait to see more videos.
thanks for the vid, dude. nice of you to shoutout everyone you learned from and give back to the community. appreciate your attitude and transparency throughout the process. much love!
So glad I found you, Sensei Keys! I came to Rookie Myco University to school up for my first attempt at myco-culture. Your new channel grabbed me by the eyes and ears and pulled me right in. You showed me the way, with the all-in-one grow bags method. Today, I put the first four bags into fruiting conditions, with lots of primordia, and even some aggressive little pins popping out already! It looks like this is going to be a success, because you showed me how. It's good to have a friend who's walked across the field before, and knows what hazards to avoid. So now, I am taking it to the next level by starting a new batch of Golden Teacher, with your method for Uncle Ben's Tek as my navigating tools This just keeps getting more and more fascinating. And I gotta tell, you, your musical interludes are pure ART. Much Gratitude and Respect, Sensei Keys. You've made Ronin mushroom culture into a new form of Kung-Fu.
Great content! As a beginner mycologist myself, I love seeing other people learn these techniques. Your presentation is top notch! I hadn't ever seen the uncle ben's tek - that's an awesome way for someone without the pressure cooker to get going. Also, love the music! Mush love, Brother!
I am a total beginner, and you probably know more about this than I do, but I watched another ladies video and she used boiling water and mixed it in with the substrate. She let it cool to room temperature, and then mix it in with the germinated Spores. That way it was all moist, but it was also using boiled sterile water.
!!!!! Iv seen probably the same vids that you have seen but the great thing is that you actually put it all together and now we can follow the guide of all those vids, great work man! Hope your enjoying them both making and using.
Next time just take your contam tubs out to the garden and slide them under some bushes or cover them up with mulch and woodchips! Theyll fruit just fine out there depending on your climate and theyll spread through your garden.
@RS H hell yea, it’s especially effective with woodlovers where I live, find a cyan patch and pluck some colonized woodchips and spread em around to all the bark beds! We used to make spore / lc slurries and fill up supersoakers and pretend we were just having a watergun fight but we colonized parks like you’re saying!
Idk if anyone has said this yet but since you're growing so much weed most organic ferts, soils, etc purposely HAVE trichoderma in them because it's good for plants. So you MAY literally have an assload of those spores flowing around the house. Or the bulk substrate was not pasteurized hot enough.
Love it, but I would try to avoid wetting the mushrooms after. The water will soak in and might affect Alkaloids from the extra swelling and water in there. Plus, it's just extra chlorine and other chemicals going in there. I mean that's just me, I would just dry then with the spores. :) Great video man, thanks for posting content!

I think I seen you on tik tok I watched all your videos in the beginning you had alot of knowledge. You and Phillly got me going. I still follow you and philly 123 oven tek agar. I've done like 300 cups and only one contam.
I know why you have to be sterile indoors and not outside. It's because in nature everything is balanced thanks to evolution. You can get tainted mushrooms outdoors but one bacteria generally doesn't take over because everything in nature has a predator. When I grew weed outdoors I never had spider mites. As soon as i switched to indoors they were everywhere.
I started growing back in 1979 with a Homestead Brand Mushroom kit I bought out of High Times It took almost a year to successfully get from spore to spawn over the years the tech got a little simpler and easier but it was still labor intensive Looking around these days I have to say you kids got it so easy it is almost plug and play .Kudos! stay safe!😁
@@sickofthestupid1067 Remember when you could get 'em out of cow fields? Before "poop pesticide"? With Golden Teachers today, you don't even really need to sterilize anything ... they DO certainly have it good my friend, but honestly, they REALLY NEED it more now than ever I think.
I think the reason we choose to be so sterile is only to ensure that your efforts in growing are not wasted. Also it is very similar to other practices we do with our food, we are overly cautious with what we eat (even making the expiration date on some food items a week before they truly are not good for human consumption). One last thought: if your muchrooms are the only thing growing in your culture, you can assume that 100% of nutrients are being taken up by the mushrooms and not to some waste product like mold. So, do you need to be so sterile for them to grow? No, not necessarily. But to ensure you haven't wasted time or money, it's a good idea

Much respect for sharing your educational journey with everyone. I hope all your grows are super fruitful. Also, your logo is dope I was checking out those shirts last night after I discovered your channel. I also remember hearing you say In another video you weren't sure why we needed the sterility when in nature they grow in unclean environments, it's actually because we're growing the perfect conditions for mold and bacteria as well as the mycelium and Since it's the perfect conditions for mold and bacteria to grow as well the mycelium will have to fight them or be taken over in the conditions we create, unlike nature where it's not a contained environment like this I If I remember correctly.

I just wanted to say I appreciate you brother. When you gave your answer about why you have so much product is perfect and exactly how I am starting. I started up about 3 weeks ago. I currently have 1 jar of grain spawn that is colonizing well and 5 2.5lbs bags inoculated and colonizing. Im crossing my fingers for your success brother and for mine aswell.
First time viewer here. Awesome content, man. Please keep up the good work. Awesome of you to share this whole process with us. You are an awesome member of the huge community of like minded people here on youtube. im looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel and preparing for my own first indoor mrow using the uncle bens tek
When growing in a tent, use a 4" vent fan for intake and hepa filter the air. This would create a positive pressure sterile air environment for the cost of a hepa filter and fan. After pressure cooking, I put the medium directly into a monotub hot and used the heat to disinfect the monotub. Ready to inoculate. Almost every video I've seen about inoculating, people aren't using a mask. Gloves are important but, masking is too. Breathe onto a mirror, the exhaled moisture gets into and onto the material people are working with. I'd wager, this specific issue is causing infections.
Let me start off by saying awesome video. I'm still learning even though my first few grows were back 2015-2016, I have just started up again with some spores I had saved from back then. I believe the answer to your question as to why it needs to be sterile is because out in nature growing conditions have to be just right and it only occurs in certain spots in nature. Whereas at home, you are creating the perfect conditions for not only these spores to germinate but also any other spore that is floating around. By creating these conditions at home, any spore can germinate much, much easier then out doors where colonies are already forming underground and harder to contaminate since they usually tend to grow in areas where the spores germinated best. At least from the research I did a few years ago told me and it makes perfect sense. As to why yours contaminated, it could've been just spores in the air, maybe even on your shirt, or maybe even ones in the uncle Ben's rice bags. Possibly spores that came from the factory themselves and just had the perfect conditions when they found themselves on your cake and were able to colonize. I did read on a few forums that once a substrate is fully colonized, other spores will have a much much harder time colonizing that substrate block since there is little to none substrate for them colonize. You don't have to do this in your video but I always found it fun/interesting to weigh them wet before drying just to see the lose in weight due to evaporation of the water. Another thing to note, I've read also on the same forums that smaller mushrooms actually pack more of a punch then bigger ones. Not sure as to how true these are since there are other factors that contribute to potency such as freshness, how they are handled (they bruise easily and psilocybin oxides when it meets with oxygen, hence the bluing that forms, most happens at the pinch/cut off site of the mushroom base where it meets the cake) another tip you can do to save on money, which I haven't tried yet other then collecting spore prints, is to cut the cap off from ones where the veil torn. Place it on aluminum foil square cut out, put a red solo cup over it and leave it there for 12-24 hours. You will be left with a spores print that will resemble the under side of the cap (the gills) and you can then take that spores print for storage to save a particular strain and use to colonize more substrate or to create your own spore syringes. I have yet to do this cause I over worry about contamination getting in the syringes and the last thing you want in the spore syringes is anything other then the spore you are trying to colonize. But again amazing video, keep up the good work, you've earned my sub! Happy growing!
I love this video. I love how you approach the process with deep research. You are very thorough and experienced. It’s amazing. Really. A professional student.
The 'sterile' thing is just for safety to make sure nothing goes wrong... it really isn't as important as people make it seem, unless you CAN'T have any mishaps. If you're growing for your own interest and whatnot... it's a lot easier than people try to make things seem and you could literally do it with bare hands. Love people doing their own things. Cheers.
When I heard your voice on this channel I thought man I’ve been watching your canna cooking for a while let me find out your doing this to!!!! Awesome!! Appreciate your detail in the description growmie!!
The 2/3 contamination is odd. Seemed like you did everything to the T and still had them get sort of gross. This makes me want to try multiple containers just in case everything gets messed up. I thought I could just do one or two but IDK now.
i'm always more impressed when someone can do a successful grow with the uncle ben technique or some other cheap and quick method. they say because it's cheap and quick it's supposed to be easier but it's not, the success rate goes down a lot and it requires a lot more skill than when doing it with the pressure cooker or agar.
I'm going to try this. Fyi, coir can be used as a casing and it is very resistant to contamination also you probably shouldn't spray the substrate until you are ready to fruit. You've taught me more than I can teach you though.
Since you've opened that tub inside your tent you may want to clean that tent really well, the green is it sporulating so when you opened the tub you wafted a bunch of spores out of it so best to clean after that happens but otherwise you're killin it!!
I saw this vid but heard this voice. Haha. Glad to see you delving into the mycology world. Uncle Ben’s is one of the best entries into it IMHO. Congrats on your harvest.
Great video man!! About what you said about how mushroom's can grow in the nature where its not at all sterile, I have been thinking about this too. My guess is that in nature, all the bacteria's is not that harmful to the mycelium because its used to it because it has been living in it and feeding from it for thousands of years and probably has evolved to fight those bacteria's (and most cubensis strains I known comes from like the Amazon, Borneo and other jungles, so very different climate than a wardrobe). So I basically view it like when humans go to vacation to the other side of the planet, cus then its super easy to get sick and infected with viruses that you have never came across before. And honestly I think people kind of overhype how sterile you gotta be when growing mushrooms. And I say this from personal experience since I'm now on my 9th block and around my 50th flush, and I have never had contam and I'm honestly not even that sterile. But ey, better safe than sorry I guess.
We have to work so clean because we are offering a medium as food for the funghi which is pretty perfect and also prefered by many other funghi and bacteria species. That`s why we keep it sterile inside. Outside all the species make their own way to find some and mostly don`t interfere with eachother. I hope that answered your question. Greetz from Germany.
My constant hang-up with 70% Isopropyl is that while it kills most Bacteria, it does not kill most Bacteria Spores, which can cause contamination just as easily. I am constantly wiping surfaces with 90% and using 70% for everything else. Also, do you not use a HEPA filter or Laminar Flow Hood? Just curious.
Refrigerators work better. You can keep them cleaner and it has a seal . Use your grow tent as a buffer zone that you can disinfect the air in because you'll have to open the fridge every once in awhile to let fresh disinfected air in.
You have the best vids! You are too the point and your presentation is perfect. I have seen a few other people doing vids on UBT and they are far inferior to you! Kudos my man! The music is great too!
Dude when you make a tube you can put parchment baking paper laying right ontop of the colonized cake and that creates a micro climate to make pin sets fully across the cake .
Nooooo don't wash them off. Also, if your dehydrator has multiple trays you can cut one or two trays out and only keep the frames so then you have the regular one followed by the cut out ones so then you "gain" space by an inch or 3 depending on your dehydrator so you don't have to cut them all up
That’s been an ever present question for me as well. The best way to understand it for me is to just accept being as clean as possible through the process is part of it and not get overly anxious and worrisome about it because it takes the fun out of it.
+ I think the flame sterilization is completely unnecessary, silly even and F’s up the flow of the process - the goal being to inject them seal with tape as quickly as possible. One dude flame sterilized his hole puncher 😊.
Hey bro. To answer your question, we don’t want any lingering spores in the air to come in contact with the desired ones. It could cross contaminate or worse you could get mold. They grow in nature in places where they’re not at risk for this contamination
Nice vid; interesting method. Have pretty much the same setup for mushies; old 8x8 grow tent, old VPD controller for humidity/temp. I’ve had good luck with iodine for sanitizing; use steam for sterilization.

@@Sasha8pancakes genetics have everything to do with immunity to contamination there are more than one factors
So many spores are sourced from nature hunts, as well. It’s hard to know without research.
Genetic in the wild are very sparc and have unstable genetics. When they are grown and sporulated over and over the genetics isolate causing certain favorable traits to remain dominant
I have done 2 all in one bags right on my desk at home with far less sterilizing and they have all grown perfect
I'm through my first few grows ( 2 tubs of golden teacher), and getting ready to put some spawn bags of yeti and jack frost into monotubs. I found your channel a few days back and watched every video. Your enthusiasm and style of explaining things is so good. Can't wait to see more videos.

thanks for the vid, dude. nice of you to shoutout everyone you learned from and give back to the community. appreciate your attitude and transparency throughout the process. much love!
Your videos and your commentary are the best I've seen for beginners. I can't get enough of them. Keep up the awesome work!
Broooo!!!!! That music is an INCREDIBLE touch to this tutorial. One hundred percent taking notes and copying step for step.
I am a total beginner, and you probably know more about this than I do, but I watched another ladies video and she used boiling water and mixed it in with the substrate. She let it cool to room temperature, and then mix it in with the germinated Spores. That way it was all moist, but it was also using boiled sterile water.
At what point in the process?
This is probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life
!!!!! Iv seen probably the same vids that you have seen but the great thing is that you actually put it all together and now we can follow the guide of all those vids, great work man! Hope your enjoying them both making and using.
I'm so proud of you brother! Keep posting and let us all learn together. Much love from Texas here
SoTx here, dirty 3rd represent!
I'm just getting started this year, and I've been looking for a channel just like this to learn from. Stoked to grow along!
@@gratefuldoge8598wow what a fantastic idea!!
Your teaching style is genuinely great. Thank you!
That’s what I was thinking, maybe just use a blow dryer to blast off any lingering substrate and then drop them in the dehydrator ?
I think you can use a soft brush to clean them up
Def don’t use chlorine water rofl.

Love all your info. Like you said. The amount of grow you have helping you fast forward your learning... Totally helping fast forward my learning.....Power of the Mushroom 😊

You can use the micro-pore tape or poly-fil for a filter.
But it does need a FAE.

I've tried twice and failed. Probably lousy spore syringe but my sterile technique is far from perfect.
This is probably the best cultivating vid I've watched, and I've watched plenty. Thank you so much.
Just discovered your channel yesterday, I'm doing my 1st grain to substrate transfer this weekend and I'm glad I have another decent mycology UA-cam channel to play in the background while I work and learn.

Great to see you got such success. This assist when struggling your way to the top. Or at least through the casing layer :)
He was also unsure of how many bags to use, and ended up using 3. Any input on this? I feel like 2 bags at that amount/size should be fine.
mans got the knowledge and his music is SLAPPIN imma been on this channel religiously
The 3 bag box had uncolonized grain in the first bag, I think that lead to the contamination.
The moisture was high too. Condensation on both the first and the second shoe box.
3rd one had very little dew pooled up
Man this video was packed full of great information..thanks brother!!!!
Ya man I’m doing this too you got me the confidence I need
Dope homeboy !! Great video , very informative, I’m motivated now . Thanx
Cheers.
What do you mean? I thought mushrooms absolutely NEED sterile conditions?
When I heard your voice on this channel I thought man I’ve been watching your canna cooking for a while let me find out your doing this to!!!! Awesome!! Appreciate your detail in the description growmie!!
The 2/3 contamination is odd. Seemed like you did everything to the T and still had them get sort of gross. This makes me want to try multiple containers just in case everything gets messed up. I thought I could just do one or two but IDK now.
he didnt check the field conditions of his substrate.
i'm always more impressed when someone can do a successful grow with the uncle ben technique or some other cheap and quick method. they say because it's cheap and quick it's supposed to be easier but it's not, the success rate goes down a lot and it requires a lot more skill than when doing it with the pressure cooker or agar.

I think it also depends on the humidity and mold and spore count in your houses air.
Nice. I can not wait to get started. Thank you for laying out the groundwork for me.
This guy has a method to his madness. Love it
What’s the substrate and where do I get it
Bro you can use vermiculite
once again i have outfoxed you fed, I'll never tell
Refrigerators work better. You can keep them cleaner and it has a seal . Use your grow tent as a buffer zone that you can disinfect the air in because you'll have to open the fridge every once in awhile to let fresh disinfected air in.

Dude when you make a tube you can put parchment baking paper laying right ontop of the colonized cake and that creates a micro climate to make pin sets fully across the cake .
So you got 30g out of 4 bags of uncle bens?
I need to know of a reliable mycological supplier.. for LC, Wood loving..any suggestions?
Dude, this is a great video, it simplified a lot of questions I had. Thank you so much, I just ordered my first spores and I'm gearing up.
@@Jamesfrankly369 Bacteria keeps it sterile in the wild. It eats the "bad mold." Nature always finds a way to flourish.

The cow manure relation was funny as hell bro lol.. good point!
